VM of deliverance for VDI

Hello

I potentially have a client that is running incorrect license on a VDI deployment, could this customer buy get-real upgrade (501 c 3 techsoup of course), then an upgrade with SA to become consistent with their VDA / VDI licensing?

TLDR:

Can the program Get real being applied to virtual machines in a VDI environment

VDA and the use of the student

    Hello

I'm trying to find what options to license our University has for VDI student use.   With 2000 students we would really here the year 2000 VDA licenses.  Are there other options out there?

This license information can be found here:

It is a peer-to-peer forum. You must contact Microsoft about licensing issues.

  • VCenter dedicated for VDI

    This runs the discussions.

Always recommended for some vCenters dedicated for VDI?  Have a client who did a major update to their environment vSphere.  The Service Bureau VDI group vCenters dedicated to run environments around the world.  VMware Eng team is on the fence.  I think its due to some vCenters more in the technical requirements of the vs environment or best practices.  Licensing is not a problem.

It would be a vCenter 5.5 environment.

Wanted to get the thoughts here.

    Thank you

As a general design principle I have separate vCenters for each VDI Desktop Pod.

  • RAID 5 or RAID 10 for VDI?

    Hello

I am currently in a dispute with my boss on which RAID should I use for the new servers ESX accommodation our VDI.

He said that we should stick with RAID 5 coz the DELL engineers suggest RAID 10 is not good for VDI.

But im stressing that we should go with RAID 10, since it offers better performance.

    Our servers have 8 x 10 k SAS 300 GB.

Each server will host max 45 Windows XP VM with 20 GB of space.

    Any suggestions?

I agree with the suggestions that have already been posted.  In our tests, our related clones are 80/20 in favor of writing so RAID 10 looks good for this.   Also, keep in mind what Andre said that traffic from replica would read.

  • Split my Cluster for VDI

    Hello everyone,

We currently have a cluster consisting of 5 hosts running vSphere 6 with 175 VM (server and VDI).  I would take two hosts and dedicated strictly to my VDI and let all the servers on the other 3 hosts.  I am able to create a cluster with another vCenter server and move the virtual machine, or I have to start from scratch.  Never had to do anything as if all of this help is very appreciated.  Thank you

Split vs vServer VDI environments is normally recommended (now called the guideline)

If you have external Ent + license and PSC, you can join the new vCenter to the domain SSO existing at the facility that would allow the cross-vCenter's vMotion. Characteristic nice and neat, could be useful when moving objects from a vCenter to another.

If the license is the company or lower, you should still be able to move everything without interruption of service. There are tools to automate and scripts out there, but if the environment is quite simple, it can also well be done manually.

Below the procedure uses the hosts as "vehicles" for the direct transport of virtual machines to one vCenter to another

    (1) install the new Victoria Cross

    (2) put the first host, intended to move, in maintenance mode and out of the cluster in data center (depending on the configuration of HA, admission control could prevent you from entering maintenance mode. If so, turn it off temporarily, do not forget to reactivate once full migration)

    (3) to migrate a lot of server virtual machines (which must move again VC) to the host outside the cluster (planning so that remaining vms to be moved can actually fit on the remaining hosts to-be-moved in terms of cpu/mem)

    (4) delete the original vcenter host

    (5) add the host to the place wanted to vcenter inventory again. All virtual machines must always be there, always on, always connected to the trade standard and operational

    (6) repeat steps 2 to 5 for the hosts and the virtual machines that you want to move remaining

    (7) set up the new vCenter inventory according to your needs

    (8) long live the new vCenter!

The new vCenter will automatically read added hosts:

    -recorded the VMs

    -config standard switch

    -connected to data warehouses

    -the local host settings

The new vcenter will not have the following:

-the labels, if everything was used on source VC

    -the folder hierarchy

    -custom roles and permissions object

    -host School Board Profiles

    -settings and cluster resource pools

    -VM models

    -vApps

    -performance history

Everything (except the performance history), not migrating things can and must be re-created manually on VC destination.

I hit the top of my head with a few assumptions in mind so please tick accordingly if any deviations / additions are needed in your particular environment. Eventually, you could do a test drive of a host with a not so critical VM thereon, front and rear.

  • Patch for VDI gold statue

    Hi all

I tried to find information about the process of applying patches to an existing model of VDI. So far, I know that the best way is to clone the existing image, patch, create a snapshot, create links to VDI pools. But I would like to find documentation for this process.

    Thank you.

I turn on the same image, make your changes and then do an ipconfig/release and stop and take a new snapshot. Crop against the new snapshot and let the old in case you need to restore. When the string is greater than three start consolidating your shots.

  • Automatically remove virtual machines for VDI pool after the period of time

Use us Vmware View 5.0 but soon move to 5.2 and have need features to automatically remove all the virtual machines in the pool selected after a certain period of time. We are at disposal VDI for a project that will end for 3 months and after this time, we want to remove this VMs automatically. Is this possible?

It depends a bit exactly what you want to do, but you can plan everything a powercli-script to remove the virtual desktop at a certain time.

Another option that I usually prefer is to manage the rights with the ad groups.

So when you want to revoke a users access to a desktop computer, simply remove the user from the group, which should be easy to do with a script.

  • DHCP IP for VDI pool selection

    Hello

I use vmware view 4.5 for desktop Virtualization. I have a two dhcp server and even has been used for the server and the Office IPS.

now I want a beach to define for 10.10.10.60 to 10.10.10.100 VDI. I another rage also like 10.10.9.50 t0 10.10.9.100. The problem I am facing is that when I prepared my machine for the master image and it is joined to the domain he bydefault took the beach. 10.10.9.X ip when I deliver the vdi Similarly, they take same ip also range.  Can any body suggest me an idea or a configuration so I can define 10.10.10.x rage for my all VMware VDI

    Thank you

    Hello
You need a separation (VLAN) physical or logical between these two subnets.  Otherwise, the VDIs goes to get the IP address from a DHCP server on the network.

  • Separate the Server vCenter for VDI environment?

Should I install a separate to a new environment of view 4.5 VDI vCenter Server?

See 4.5 can potentially reach about 3,000 users, although he will start with a pilot and after that start to add users probably a hundred at a time.

Is our current environment vmware vCenter 4.0 Update 2, although I am considering upgrading to 4.1

We currently have a small VMware environment with around 30 guests and about 400 virtual machines

I was thinkng it would be good to have vCenter for our VDI environment running in a cluster in our existing vCenter environment.

It would be wise to tie our vCenters if we do not have two?

    Any ideas on that?

Has anyone has expereince with this size VDI environment?

    Thank you!!

    Tom

I prefer to run a separate instance of vCenter. Our deployment is much smaller than yours, and we run it separate because it isolates environments, allows to plan maintenance and does not affect the two environments, because VMware has fallen behind manufacturing discovers completely compatible with the latest versions of vSphere in the past (e.g. vSphere 4.1 requires 64-bit Windows when composer would not run under 64-bit.)

Especially in an environment as large as yours, I it would run separately.

  • Performance of ESX U3 for VDI

I am interested in a VDI deployment and want to know what peoples experience. I have a couple of solutions in mind using various materials. HP Blades BL680, and the DL585 G5 DL385. The initial designs were based on 680 or 585 (4 Sockets) but because of the costs, I want to seek to implement a hardware platform cheaper. This brings me to the solution 385 (2 outlets), but due to the amount of recommended VM by heart, that I'm looking to reassure some. I'm assuming that memory on all platforms will be the same.

Previously, the CGC by heart was 8-10 VM however I have read that ESX U3 has support for up to 20 by heart. Everybody put in place a solution based on 20 VM by heart in a production environment? And what are everyone's thoughts on this feature improved in U3?

    Thanks in advance

build is probably the best option, but do not forget to try and buy new hosts at least pairs, for compatibility vmotion, however with the increace in active VCA Chips which becomes less of an issue.

  • Can someone explain the inheritance for VDI OR blocking?

I received the following Win 7 Optimization guide below.  How can I go in making sure I don't break anything? I can just block inheritance to my view Desktop OU? How can I tell if some of the GPOS are being propegated ask me OR?

'Legacy of blocking on a heritage of blocking of the OU is a potentially important step if you want to manage virtual machines. In some cases, group policy applied to the computer accounts in the other organizational units may have a direct conflict with a parameter that you want to apply to your Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Environment (for example, a strategy paper painted). Additional information describing the inheritance of group policy can be found here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/grouppolicy/archive/2010/01/07/tales-from-the-community-enforced-vs-block-inheritance.aspx"" "" "

You can block inheritance to the level of the ORGANIZATION of the Office of view unit.   If you use the Group Policy Management console and then right-click on the ORGANIZATIONAL unit there is an option to block inheritance.   If you want to see which is linked to the OU that you can watch the linked Group Policy objects, and if you want to see what the OU is currently inheriting you can view the Group Policy inheritance tab.

  • Windows XP - align the disks for VDI

    Hello

If someone actually managed to succeed this procedure following the VMware guide to http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx3_partition_align.pdf?

    My experience is this:

    • If you create a new vdisk of a Windows XP VM and follow the guide using diskpart.exe, the version provided with Windows XP does not support the attribute align = 64 argument i.e. create primary align partition = 64.  You cannot copy a later version on XP you will get the message incompatible version.

    • Creating a new vdisk of a VM in Windows 7 and with the help of dispart.exe included with Windows 7 don't seem to work.  The disc is released in the MBR and diskpart creates a partition aligned to 64. The next steps are to format the drive with 32 k allocation units which also works.  I have then create my new machine virtual Windows XP, set this new vdisk as my system disk and start build of Windows using the attached driver and controller LSI logic.  Everything seems to work, Windows installs to the hard drive, but after the first reboot I get 'disk read error.  I have proven that it is something to do with what the partition Win7 as if I reformat the partition during the installation, it works.  Also if I create a vdisk std of Win7 with no alignment stuff and that attach to my new VM WinXP, it works too.

    • Finally using the old tool diskpar.exe seems also to align the disc but the CD of Windows XP can not actually see the installation disc.

So after trying all these different options, I still couldn't line up my Windows XP system partition before installing Windows.

Someone has an idea what I am doing wrong?

    Ta!

    Hello.

I guess that's why the 'recommendations for aligning VMFS Partitions' document also States "Note: align the startup disk in the virtual machine is neither recommended nor necessary." "Align the than the data in the virtual machine disks".

It's a bit of a pain.  That being said, in the past, I used the procedure detailed in http://blog.core-it.com.au/?p=281 successfully.

    Good luck!

  • Inttial configuration of servers for VDI

Starting just me wet feet with view 3.0 and had a quick question for those who have been broadcast for a while.  What is recommended for bothe the VDM servber and security server, a virtual machine or a physical box?  I already have the VDM server as a virtual machine and I was ready to add a security server.  Didn't want to have to take things down after installing them.  Also, if anyone has any good pointers on the Sec server configuration I would like to hear them.  Thanks for listening!

    Perry

I'm running my server VDM and Security server as a virtual machine and have had no problems at all.    Not sure about pointers to put in place the Security server because I thought it was pretty easy and I had no problems.   If you have the time make sure you read the Administrator's guide because it has everything you need.

I was looking for information on Creative Suite subscription licenses.  I wanted to know if I can use it on cloud subscription on multiple computers as am long only use it on one computer at a time, and as long as I'm the only one to ever use it.  I bounce back between two computers (imac widescreen and a macbook air) depending on whether I'm working at home or on the go.  I was wondering if I need two subscriptions or if I could use the same subscription on both.

Thanks for the pointer, so I can stay consistent.

End user license agreement (EULA) applies to both perpetual version and a subscription of a Adobe product.

Yes, according to the LICENSE agreement, you can install a product on 2 computers and use them unless you do not work on them at the same time.
