Very slow the new Satellite L40

I would be grateful for any help you guys can give me.

I have a Satellite-ish L40 (bought last fall). It's a basic - Intel Celeron death machine / 1.60 GHz / 1015 - RAM under Vista Home Premium. He bought just to make the work of processor + some use very light internet. The problem is that it runs very slowly (including holding still to go when I start by putting).

I tested virus to death. I regularly run detection of spyware / remove programs. I have reduced the number of startup programs immediately. All results say I have a machine of clam. But it is still as slow as hell. And when I say slow, I can do about a cup of coffee in the time it takes to access the net.

I contacted Toshiba support, and the best they could suggest was that I reformat the hard disk, which is dramatic enough. If anyone out there has a better suggestion, I'd love to hear it. Right now, I'm rather regretting my purchase.

Many thanks - Max

To be honest this radical solution is not a bad proposal.

But what do you mean exactly with the slow machine?
How long does take you to a boot?

The fact is that many applications are preinstalled on this laptop and this could be main reasons for a long start. But the fact is that many of these applications are necessary for the performance of all the features of the laptop.
In addition, an antivirus program that is running in the background and could affect the startup time. Long ago, I used the Norton Antivirus and this software was a reason my laptop was very slow... I changed it and now I'm using the freeware like Antivir software. It's much better...

No, because the limiting factor is the computer is USB 2.0, which is how it connects any external drive apart the external drive. As USB 2.0 is much slower, there is no real advantage to a 7200 RPM drive. What you need is a Firewire enclosure that supports FW800 which is much faster than USB 2.0.

  • Only the C partition on the new Satellite C50-B-14Z

    Hello

I'm not an experienced user, but I'll do my best to explain the problem.

I bought Toshiba Satellite C50-B-14Z with 8.1 installed Windows, and when starting the system, I noticed that there is only one partition of hard drive, the C partition. When you enter the disk management, I see there are 4 basic partitions already (500 GB disk):

    -Recovery - 1 GB
    -EFI system - 100 MB
    -Recovery - 10.97 GB
-C (boot, page file, crash dump, primary partition) - 453,57 GB

They are all primary partitions, and I read on the forums that you can have only 4 those primary, so I can't add one more to the D partition, I would like to have.
Possibility that I offered in "actions" is to create a virtual hard drive, but I guess that is not the same thing.
I also read that you can create new partition if you have "unallocated" space (partition), but all 4 before indicated are those primary and not affected.

Then, the next opportunity that I read on is to do a right-click on C and "reduce volume", and then create new partition from the rest of the space (if I understand it is good), but then I read in Windows Help:
"When you shrink a partition, all regular files are automatically transferred to the disk to create the new unallocated space. There is no need to reformat the drive to shrink the partition. » ... "If the partition is a raw partition (that is, a lack of a file system) that contains data (for example, a database file)", reducing the partition may destroy the data. ""

Normally, I have never tested a large part with the C partition, and now I don't know if I would destroy some system files while doing this "shrinkage" and I don't have the CD installation for the system, so I can't fix it if I ruin something.

    Please advise...

Yes, this is the right way to have more than one partition. You can define what capacity should partition C and any free space can be "convert" to the D partition.

One last thing: don't forget to create a recovery (DVD or USB) media. It is very important to have recovery image back-up.

  • Cannot start OS on all new Satellite L40

    Can someone help, please?

I just got my new series Satellite L40 with Vista premium installed.
Power plugged and open the device on, and received this message:

"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows Setup cannot continue. To install windows click ok to restart the computer and then restart the installation. »

So, I go ahead and click ok, system shut down boots then again with the same message over and over again. Read the small manual content provided and ask the recovery disc to insert, followed by the closing down of the device. While the system restarts to hold the F12 key then select the DVD drive and continue to follow the on-screen instructions.

I did it to the letter and still the same result with the message reappear.
I thought that the recovery disk was empty but have checked on the desk and he has record of files on it, so I tried again.

Without any joy. It is for tomorrow a gift which I feel that I will not be able to give because of this case, and it's too late to get another.

    PLEASE, PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP?
    MANY THANKS & KIND REGARDS
    TOMMY

    Hello

Put it supplied recovery media in the DVD player, turn on the laptop and immediately press the C button. Please, keep it down for about 5-10 seconds. It will require your notebook to start recovery media playback and start the process OS installations.

If there is nothing to check with your dealer tomorrow and I am sure that you will get a new notebook. usually the Exchange should not be problematic.

Manager says Deveice peripheral island works another property. And the driver is correctly installed. But I can't turn on parameter of network or windows Mobility Center.

It's very embarrassing to write something like that, but I need your help.

PS This is the first time that I post on this thread, but who answers? Toshiba support team?

    Thank you

    Hello
You said, did you check if the device is properly installed in Device Manager. Is there a red X on the wlan module in the list? And he must have this name: RTL8187B.

There are several ways to enable the wlan on your laptop. One, is the hardware switch of your laptop, the other thing you can try is a combination of FN to FN + F8.
You can control if the WiFi is working when you see the symbol of the LED is on or not.

  • Installation of antivirus on the new Satellite L50B

    Toshiba Hello Forum
I need to install kaspersky internet security 2015 (i've got the third license) on my new laptop, but there are already installed (but not yet configured) McAfee

How do you propose to do?
do I need to uninstall McAfee before you begin to install kaspersky?
I read [former position | http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=48993] who's talking about problem of uninstalling McAfee...

THX and sorry for my English.

So I use Avira before Avira installation I delete originally preinstalled application antivirtus. I recommend you do the same thing.
On my new Satellite, I removed McAffe without any problem using the option Uninstall in Control Panel > programs and features.

After restarting the laptop installed Kaspersky and I'm sure that everything will be OK.

  • Cannot run the CHKDSK - Satellite L40-139 process

When I start my laptop (Toshiba Satellite L40-139) always starts to run chkdsk
He completed the phase 1 and then when it is at 30% through stage 2 it just goes directly to the login screen.

I was wondering if someone can help me correct what I want to start the whole process.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

You can run chkdsk after Windows has started.
    Type in the CMD COMMAND.
The console should open and there you can use the command * chkdsk *.

    That's all.

  • Question of battery charge on the new Satellite C50t-A-10J

I have a new Satellite C50t-A-10J that has intermittent load problems. Sometimes it charges ok sometimes it says connected does not support. When no current charging if I click on the battery icon supported starts and continues ok.

Does anyone know of a more automatic solution? I read on similar problem solved by uninstalling and then reinstalling the Microsoft ACPI battery compatible control method in Device Manager but is reluctant to try because the computer is new.

I can of course go back to the retailer, but thought I'd post just in case someone had a similar solution.

    Thank you

    Hi Geoff

I guess this isn't problem in the system.
It seems that your battery is defective and I recommend to contact the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country to get a battery replacement.

  • How to transfer files from old PC of office to the new Satellite L750?

Hi everyone - starting at this site so be gentle with me please.

Specifically, I want to ask: (a) Will the MS Word 7 Starter, which is already installed on my computer Toshiba laptop accept a lot of files from my old Desk Top for most Word documents? What kind of capacity has the Starter? What is the best device to use - a portable hard drive? USB? Discs?

    and

    (b) how to retrieve my Bing toolbar? Currently, I don't have a toolbar that displays the file, new, cut and paste at all. I have a space of Bing search on my desktop, but nothing else except a toolbar at the top where I type addresses located on the side until now at the top right with host, Star and a cog. Higher than ago valued one minimize, maximize and cross to close.

    Thank you very much

    Hello

All word documents are compatible with any Microsoft Office Word application.
If you used old software in Microsoft Office 2003 and now want to use an Office 2010 or later server MS Office 2007, then you will need to install a patch Ms.
But usually, you will receive a notification message if necessary.

On moving the files to the other computer.
The best and easiest method to move files is the use of external HDD USB or memory flash stick, copy the files to USB HDD and then move it to the new laptop.

  • Installation of Windows XP Home edition on the new Satellite Pro L550

    Hello

I have a new satellite Pro L550 and need to downgrade to XP. If I want to go back to Windows 7 that I can in the future?

    Thank you, Lisa

    Hello Lista

In my opinion you should look forward and begin using the new Windows7 operating system. It is really good OS, well done and runs with good performance on Toshiba laptops.
Please note that you have most recent laptop with newer hardware model designed for standards of Win7.
Yes, you can install Win7 when you want.

Win7 is fully supported and you won't have any problems with it.
To return to Windows XP edition family has no much sense to me, except to use some old software designed for Windows XP Home edition only.

Anyway, what model of laptop you have exactly (L550-xxx)?

  • Windows 7 does not start on the new Satellite C660-195

    Hello

    I just bought a Toshiba Satellite C660-195 with Windows 7 pre-installed.

This morning I turned on it and it came with a black box with x:windows\system32\drvload.exe in it. This box then disappeared and Startup Repair kicked. He then told me that Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically. The notice were to remove any device that had recently been attached to the laptop (such as a webcam or music device) but I did not install a hardware or devices. I clicked finish and stop you the laptop.

I lit it again and it's the same thing (new!)

A forum would suggest trying the following: click on the link 'Show advanced options of the system and support recovery' who asked me to choose the configuration of my keyboard, but then when I do & click then it tells me "you must register to access system recovery options" I am never given the option connect!

When using the F8 advanced boot options I'm still not able to solve this problem. The same thing (see above) that happens when I try to start in all security modes, last good known Configuration (Advanced), debug mode, start Windows normally etc. I don't understand it.

Looking for other forums, they suggested dΘplaτant zero while running and then one selects Windows 7 to restore the laptop to its factory settings, but the same thing happens - it shows just the black screen with x:windows\system32\drvload.exe launched then startup repair, that does not solve the problem.

I don't have a disc of windows 7 to restore since I only bought the laptop 6 days ago and didn't have time to do a still. In addition, the laptop must have the restoration on his hard drive, but I can't access it to restore windows.

I'm just a home user understand all technical talk. Please can someone help me?

    Hello

Sorry to hear you I have this problem. The fact is that the new laptops come with only HARD drive recovery image and not with recovery DVDs. What you can try now is to install the recovery image using HARD drive recovery facility.
If this works you need out of the box again.

Please do it following the instructions in this document - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD9102IR0000R01.htm

    Please send us comments.

  • Question about password on the new Satellite A105 HARD drive

I am the owner of a Satellite A105 and the hard drive was failing. I got a new hard drive but before I gave up on the current one I decided to wipe it clean and a few tools to see if it was a way to recover.

Well, when wiping clean it restarts and then he showed me a message saying "password type of HARD drive internal" or something similar. I do not know the password so I can't use the hard disk more (or is there a way to reset the password?), but before you install the new hard drive I want to know if there could be a problem installing the new hard drive in the laptop without knowing the previous password.

I mean, it locks the new hard drive or is it completely independent of the installed hard drive? The one I have is brand new, and I want to know if I plug it in and from the laptop are all I have to do?

    Hello

If the HARD drive password has been activated and you don t usually know this password then the HARD drive is locked and can no longer be used.
It s simply not accessible and it s not possible to remove this password.

    > I want to know if there could be a problem installing the new hard drive in the laptop without knowing the previous password. I mean, it locks the new hard drive or is it completely independent of the installed hard drive?
I think that he should t be any problem with a new HARD drive.
As I said the password is stored in the sector specials on the HARD drive. The old password should not exist on the new HARD drive (if the password has not been set).

    Best regards

  • Re: Keyboard issue on the new Satellite P870

I bought a portable Satellite P870 last week, I found the function do not work, especially for the backlit keyboard function key, I tried almost everything, but doesn't help t, only the brightness and volume can be adjust.

I wonder if there is an update of facilities or for my laptop error checking, maybe I am missing some files of utilities Toshiba?

    Hello

Do you use your new Satellite phone with original operating system preinstalled that you got with it?

Have you noticed these problems since the first day or later?
What you can try is to reinstall extra package from Toshiba. This package contains several tools and one of them is utility of flash cards.

Latest version, you can find on the download page of Toshiba under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp

  • niSwitch_init very slow on new Windows 7 PC

I have 4 SCXI-1127 cards connected to an SCXI-100 chassis with a USB interface.

I am using VBA in Excel.

On our old PC XP, the niSwitch_init command would run in 1-2 seconds per card.

On the new windows 7 PC, this command takes about 8-10 seconds per card. Alternatively, about 30-40 seconds for the 4 cards.

the exact commands that I use are:

    status = niSwitch_init ("SC1MOD1", VI_TRUE,
    VI_TRUE, card1)

    status =
    niSwitch_init ("SC1MOD2", VI_TRUE, VI_TRUE, map 2)

    status =
    niSwitch_init ("SC1MOD3", VI_TRUE, VI_TRUE, card3)

    status =
    niSwitch_init ("SC1MOD4", VI_TRUE, VI_TRUE, 4)

If something has changed in the version of Windows 7 niSwitch?

    What could be causing it?

The following commands to the switch are running at the same time as before. It's onlt the command niSwitch_init which is slow.

    Thank you

    Hello Phil,

Thank you for your response. The KB shows OR-Switch 4.2 (and later versions) because the problem will be resolved with the release of these drivers. However, the OR-Switch 4.2 official release date has not announced yet. At this point, the best work around workaround would be to enable the HPET on your Windows 7 system.
