VIC 1240 - question Win2k8R2

Hi people,

I have a problem when installing Win2008 R2 via SAN to a UNIT number with the VIC1240 adapters on blades M3 B200. The installer is simply not able to find any storage to install its data. When I use ESXi 5.0u1 everything works well, the logic unit number is discovered and it can be written to-while the Microsofts installer can't find anything. I've had a few quick glances to cisco.com for advice of driver or something like that, but I could find anything in that direction.

Tips are welcome.

Kind regards

Maik

The drivers you need are found here depending on your version of the code:

http://www.Cisco.com/Cisco/software/release.html?mdfid=283853163&softwareid=283853158&release=2.0%283b%29&relind=available&rellifecycle=&RelType=latest

You'll need map iso drivers and add appropriate drivers during the initial installation.  Also, remember to unmap the driver cd and remap the windows iso or you will get an error windows cannot install on that partition.

    Hello

What is the advantage of using VIC 1240 + Port Expander versus having a 1280 VIC? I don't see any.

    Someone has some entries?

    (a) # you can definitely add the mLOM later, but understand that the 'slot' mLOM is for the mLOM only.  The Mezz slot is for the 3rd GEN 1280 adapter or other.

    (b) Yes.  Now you have ther power!  Keep in mind the 160Gbp is burst capacity max.  You would be hard to find an application or at the end of the devices to maintain this flow

  • How many vNIC on B200 M3 with VIC 1240 + extender?

    Hello

Asking to confirm my resoning/interpretation of B200 M3 with VIC 1240 + extensible architecture.

I'll apply vSphere 5.1 works UCS B200 M3 equipped with blades with VIC 1240 + expanders mezzanine.

If I understand the documentation, all the physical links through the fabric between the host and the IOM are automatically approved by UCS, so if I don't create only one UCS vNIC by fabric, ESXi must 'see' vmnic with 40 Gbps capacity (with limitation of 10 Gbps for the single 'flow').

Say this another way - there is no need to create 8 vNIC to use all 8 physical links?

    Nice day!

With the VIC 1240 and Extender port and 2208 hypervisor ESX will be able to see an aggregation of links total of 40G network card.

I can't find any configuration for this configuration document and the only post on here, I found 2 years ago and says that mezzanines Cisco cards do not support NPIV. Can he still be the case today?

    VMkernel log attached.

The last time I checked (end of 2014), it was not intended for NPIV on ESX host.

We have ongoing enforcement and documented for Hyper-V.

  • 10G between adpater and blades for VIC1240 + 1280

As my other discussion suggested, I VIC 1240 and 1280 cards installed on the B200 M3 blade.

UCS automatically creates 4x20G port-channel between the adapter and the blades. We have therefore 80 G total n/b to the INSTITUTION of the blade. Side has 40 G and 40 B side

I have a delicate question: if I could change the 4 ports-channels to 8 individual links while I have granular control to 10G does level not 20G

Can anyone help to answer the question?

No, these are internal pc, automatically. Be aware that a single stream is limited to 10G, more if you have not configured a pc between the IOM and fi, you are limited by this public static pinning (IOM - FI) to 10G anyway. PC between IOM and fi requires the second generation material, for example. 62xx and 22xx.

  • vCon Placement in UCS

    Hello

I have a question regarding the placement of vnic in UCS specifically to the assignment of vCon.

In my system, I have B200M3 servers with the UCS Vic1240 + mlom expansion card.

What I was wondering how much is vCon I have in my system?  What I've read, each vCon is the virtual representation of the physical map, so in my case, I only vCon.  It makes sense, because when I look at where the system has placed my vNIC, they are all associated with vCon1.

However, when I look at the "Modify vNIC/vHBA investment" and do one manually, I see four Vcons(4) (vCon1 - vCon4).  Is that by default, or I would be able to use Vcons(4) 2-4?  If I can, so I wonder why the system has only chosen to use vCon1?

Any help in this understanding would be gratefuly received!

    Thank you

    Dominic

VCON is equivalent to the physical I/O adapter; in your case VIC-1240 + port expander is 1 I/O adapter, so you only vcon.

the fact that 4 vcon to appear, has to do with the fact that the UCS C-Series servers can have up to 4 I/O adapters; B-series servers are limited for the moment 2 I/O adapters.

  • FEX-Uplink Failover, loadbalancing

I would like to understand more of the technology within a vblock
I have a few questions gradually

So I'm out. pls be patient and thank you in advance...

VBlock 720 with the following generic configuration

    Switch 2 x Cisco 5000 Series
    2 x FI 6248
    6 x chassis 5108
    FEX 2204
    VIC 1240 (no Mezzanine Card)
    8 x M3 blade, 2 CPU

uplinks of 4 x 10 G of each FEX to FI (port channel)
uplink of 8 x 10 G of each FI for Ciso 5000 series swith (vpc)

    Assumptions:

    All chassis are completely fill

Each blade has consistient thoroughput of bandwidth, but 6 GB

    1. When the blades connect to FEX A and B FEX, are active active connections?
    2. For exampleIs blades 1 and 5 has made the fallen on the same ports on the same FEX FEX?
    3. What is the method that load balances blade ping?
    4. Assume 1 Uplink fails between FEX and FI, is the uplink 1 on FEX B overexploited.
    5. How the virtual machine decides which ANC port to send traffic?

    She now...

    See online

When the blades connect to FEX A and B FEX, are active active connections?

    I assume you mean of FEX = IOM in the chassis;

Yes the two fabrics are active; all VIC are double hosted the fabric a and b

For exampleIs blades 1 and 5 has made the fallen on the same ports on the same FEX FEX?

You have the choice between static pinning (made by UCS Manager) blade slot to an Uplink of IOM, or set a port between IOM and fabric channel interconnection; port channel is the preferred mode.

Static pinning depends on model of IOM, 2204 / 2208 and the number of uplinks, for example

    2204-4 uplinks

    slot 1 and 5--> uplink 1 chassis

    2 and 6-> uplink 2 chassis slot

    ......

    2208-8 uplinks

    Chassis slot 1-> uplink 1

    Chassis slot 2-> uplink 2

    ......

Pinning static if a rising fails, the fabric slots correspondent has or b, are declining. There is no repinning for remaining uplinks; grouping and multipathing will take the appropriate action.

If you have a port-channel, and you lose a link, no problem, as long as there is at least a link to the top; your bandwidth will decrease, but th vnic/vhba are still in place

What is the method that load balances blade ping?

Don't understand; To be more specific

Assume 1 Uplink fails between FEX and FI, is the uplink 1 on FEX B overexploited.

Yes, in principle. but you will have to design oversubscription from end to end in any case!

How the virtual machine decides which ANC port to send traffic?

It depends on the hypervisor; Take, for example, VMware ESXi and vswitch: load balancing can be configured by switch and / or port-group; important caveat: do not hash IP as interconnection of fabric does not support the Protocol LACP; by default, the original virtual¨port code.

  • VIC1240 and 2208xp

    Hi team,

Configure the UCS quickly to provide 80G blades B200 M3 link to FI.

I have two adpaters: 1 VIC 1240 (VIC1240 is in the mLOM slot), 1 module VIC 1280 and IOM is 2208xp.

After tchecked the doc, I found the solution in attached. But couldn't find the doc who shows how to configure in UCS?

It is very appreciated if someone can suggest the steps in detail of the configuration.

    THX

    Hi David,

With 1240 and 1280 on the blade adapters you will automatically have 80 G total n/b at the END of the blade. Side has 40 G and 40 B side

There is a channel of automatic port created between the adapter and the blade, and you don't have to configure anything else.

All you have to do is to create the vnic and vhba as usual in the profile of serivce.

  • UCS

I have a Cisco UCS blade chassis system that we just finished setting in in the last few weeks. It is planned to organize OpenStack, and if we try to install a variant of Ubuntu on this subject. Except that when the boot blades, they seem to have a pretty big bug that hits right after as the network starts. I have 4 blades UCS B200 M3 with 196 GB of RAM and 2620-E5-XEON Processors with VIC 1240 MLOM - 40G - 01 on each blade. They connect to UCS 6120XP FI switches. The material is "usable" status and restart does not seem to make a difference.

I can complete an installation of Ubuntu (12,04 LTS and tested 13.10, two 64-bit server installations) very well, but at startup (startup about 5/7 ups) she get the following:

It has 4 vNIC to network interfaces, set up on each blade through a Council of network VIC1240 on the blade.

It works very well with CentOS 6.5 x 64 Windows 2008R2 and 2012 server installs Ubuntu hangs here, gets a possible delay of DHCP on occasion (because not all 4 for NICs are on network VLAN with DHCP running) and but it's there. I can hit enter and it falls to the bottom of line, ctrl-C and it prints the ^ c but nothing else. ALT - F2 or ctrl-alt-F2, what to try to lay a new shell does nothing. And I let it sit for about 6 hours without change.

On rare occasions, I've seen it finish booting, but it does not receive this error of aepi on these occasions and seems to work correctly. I was able to do an apt - get update/upgrade to level and finished without any problem. The network seemed but to restart, he returned to the same problem.

I tried Ubuntu on 3 of the 4 blades I have available and have the same problem on all of them.

This is similar to https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/4123558?referring_site=bss&channel=bdp#4123558 , but that one is above all aesthetic. It causes a log entry, but starts fine.

This problem prevents my servers to boot successfully about 75% of the time.

    Don't know the solution, but

    (1) that very little time, Cisco officially support Ubuntu, so you can open a TAC case

    (2) I have a client who successfully (after some trouble), Ubuntu installed on the C-series servers

It is true that you install on the local disk? RAID 0, Raid-1

  • VMware 5.1 with compatibility virtual RDM and Microsoft SQL Cluster mode

    Hello

I am a bit confused by the VMWare documentation and hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I want to know if it is possible and supported to create a cluster of SQL 2008 R2 2 nodes (Server 2008 R2 SP2 are VM) on a 2 node cluster VMWare 5.1 with the use of Virtual RDM compatibility?

When you read the PDF on vsphere5.1 on the link below on page 9, there's a indicating note 'NOTE Clusters on multiple physical computers with no-pass-through RDM is supported only for Windows Server 2003 clusters. It is not supported for clustering with Windows Server 2008. »

    http://pubs.VMware.com/vSphere-51/topic/com.VMware.ICbase/PDF/vSphere-ESXi-vCenter-Server-51-Setup-MSCS.PDF

So that means that I want "a 2-node cluster sql 2008 R2 server" is not supported?

But I also found this link below and in the table of the column on the Cluster SQL line RDM is said 'yes' with a 2.

VMware KB: Microsoft Clustering on VMware vSphere: guidelines for supported configurations

Means 2/redirects-> for more information on shared disk configurations, refer to the Disk Configurations section in this article.

    • RDM: Configuration using a shared Quorum for storage or data must be on Fiber Channel (FC) based on RDM (physical cluster across boxes "CAB" mode, virtual mode for cluster in a box "IPC") in vSphere 5.1 and previous versions. RDM on storage other than CF (iSCSI and FCoE) are supported only in vSphere 5.5. However, in earlier versions, FCoE is supported in very specific configurations. For more information, see Microsoft clustering solutions table above note 4 .

    What follow-up note4->

    1. In vSphere 5.5, native FCoE is supported. In vSphere 5.1 update 1 and 5.0 Update 3, two cluster configuration of the node with Cisco NAC (VIC-1240/1280) cards and driver version 1.5.0.8 is compatible with Windows 2008 R2 SP1 64-bit guest operating system. For more information, see the VMware hardware compatibility guide:

This means that it is suuported, I "m confused.

    Hi Bypy,

Two windows 2008 R2 SQL virtual cluster nodes with RDM is supported only for the IPC or Cluster In a Box that is to say if the two virtual machines reside on the same host ESXi. The same configuration is not supported for the cabin or Cluster across boxes (virtual machines running on different hosts ESXi).

The CAB, you go for the physical RDM mode.

    According to this link, http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1037959

SQL Cluster using windows 2008 R2 is supported for both physical and virtual mode RDM. Between physical and virtual mode depends on whether you want the CAB or IPC respectively.

    I hope this helps.

    See you soon,.

  • 1225 VIC Port Virtualization question on Cisco UCS C240, 460 servers without FI

    Dear all,

I have installed & configured the hypervisor, its running fine.  But the servers are connected directly to the nexus & there is no FI here.

But the business must virtulize the adapter VIC & use for multiple purposes such as vmotion, FT etc...

When I create a vNIC on CIMC & map the uplink port 0 or 1, even if those who signed off on the esxi console, even if the status of uplinks in the esxi console are shows connected.

Will be that the adapter Virtualization is supported wireless?  Please tell us the best practices, how to use the Cisco VIC 1225/1227 wireless & how to virtualize the adapter.

It would be a great help...

  • Maybe a stupid question move VMs from Intel for servers based on AMD and Vice Versa as regards

I saw wrescie of documentation related to the limitation of the fast vMotioning of VMs between host running different platforms CPU... but nothing (so far) that deal directly with the mobile (cold, firm VMs) VMs 1 host with one type of processor to another... again, while the guest virtual computer is stopped.

Reason for the request is that we want to buy some cheap MicroServer for ESXi Lab Use AMD-based, but hopes to move virtual machines from / to them and of / to our production based on Intel Xeon platforms.  in this case, vMotion, isn't a matter of concern.

RHEL 5 + have all the problems, but RHEL 4 may have some problems. Check out this KB: KB 1909.

It really depends on if the distribution has any installation of the specificities for AMD or Intel. Nowadays, most are generic, unless you customize them.

  • 2 qs Q: PRIMARY should a compact before deleting email TB or vice versa

HELLO, MY MAIN QUESTION: apparently the compaction is part of the deletion. But a Compact before email to remove TB or Vice Versa or does it matter which comes first?

NOTE SECONDARY & QUESTION; I read the article on the compaction, but don't always know exactly what means this word-(e.g. it means compression and why it is absolutely necessary for the deletion? In this regard article compaction TB indicates that in the RELEVANT part. "IF the message is marked as DELETED, or moved, Thunderbird that IGNORES message and moves to the next message". The previous quote seems to say that the compaction is not part of a deletion, but I know (or think you know) that deleting an email and compaction it are necessary for its TOTAL ABOLITION in TB. Can someone explain this apparent contradiction? (I used to use Outlook and I do not remember the term 'compaction' with this system).

NO ANSWER TO EACH QUESTION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thank you

Deleting a message it marks for deletion and cache. Compaction in fact it removes and frees up disk space. Delete then compact.

Despite the bad name compaction has nothing to do with file compression as zipping them.
