Vista SP2 x 64 install error "0xc0190036 517/97646 (explorer.exe)" _
I'm trying the upgrade of vista x 64 sp1 to vista sp2 x 64. When the system tries to restart, it crashes with the error "0xc0190036 517/97646 (explorer.exe). I have to hard start and do a restore.
I tried several suggestions over a period of 3 days. One of the suggestions was to run chkdsk. This is the error I get when I run chkdsk: "explorer.exe entry index in the index file 35 $I30 are incorrect." If I run chkdsk /f it says it removes the entry and then explorer.exe is an orphan. When I reboot and running chkdsk /f even once, I get the same messages.
Is the vista sp2 x 64 install error and the error from chkdsk associated. What should I do?Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 2 (SP2). When it appeared in my automatic updates, I tried to install it and said something like this update is not necessary and disappear so I downloaded SP2 stand-alone version and it fails with the error code 0x80070005. I tried with all security software close along with other applications. I tried in safe mode and have tried all the other things available on the forum. See my other sons for more information.

Thanks, I tried the first process you suggest and expect a reply when the hard drive crashed. Maybe that's the reason that all the problems have started. I will replace the HD and hope that after all reloading, there is no more problems.

Windows Update / Windows Install Error code 80070641 and 641
I use a Windows vista Home Premium SP2 OS and having this problem for a few months now... and the difficulty (which continues to work for me) came from Support by Email from Microsoft.
I just had the problem (11 Windows updates wouldn't install) still ONCE and this fix worked... again... Although I still don't understand what changes the Windows Installer-related registry entries. If someone knows a logfile to inspect to find what causes the registry changes, please let me know!
I'm below insert a link to the thread where I posted the fix Microsoft Email Support gave me.
In addition, I am trying to determine what is the cause. I wonder if Iolo - System Mechanic Professional could be the culprit. If someone is facing this problem... and running System Mechanic Professional Iolo... Please you sound!
In addition, you may have to restart after you import the "Installer.reg" file in your registry... at least I had the last time I had this problem.
Best wishes
Rick
@meteor242 (Rick)
You need to do one more reg fix to restore the association Reg in Regedit.
(This too was zapped by System Mechanic).
These are for VISTA systems<>
Download this file from Ramesh S http://www.winhelponline.com/fileasso/regfix_vista.zip
Save it to your DESKTOP.
Extract the contents to your DESKTOP.
Click Start, type
REGEDIT and press ENTER key
from the main menu, select file
then Select IMPORT
Access the dialog box (click the icon on the DESKTOP on the left to select)
type regfix_vista.reg in the file name text box and click on the Open button.
Once the merger is completed, you will see a confirmation message.
Click OK when finished. Close regedit.

Hello
Because you have tried all the steps of troubleshooting and still faces questions, I suggest you do an InPlace upgrade using the Installation of Windows Vista disc.
Note Run a repair installation will not damage files and applications that are currently installed on your computer. However, before you perform an Inplace upgrade, you can take a backup of important data. In case of a worst case scenario, you may have to reinstall all the programs. Make sure that you back up personal data to disks or other external storage devices before performing an upgrade on the spot. To perform an upgrade in-place, follow these steps.
a. close all running applications.b. Insert the Windows Vista DVD into the DVD drive of the computer.
c. in the settings window, click install now.
Note If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:
Click on start and type Drive: \setup.exe in the box to start the search.
Note The placeholder drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD.
List programs, click Setup.exe.
In the settings window, click install now.
a. click go online to get the latest updates for installation (recommended).
b. type the CD key if you are prompted to do so.
c. in the "Windows Installer" page select the operating system you want to update or Inplace.
d. click Yes to accept the Microsoft software license agreement.
e. on the which type of installation you want? of the screen, click upgrade.
f. when the installation is complete, restart your computer.
For more information, please see the link:
Once the upgrade has completed, you must activate your copy of Windows Vista.
For more information about how to activate Windows Vista, see the following article:
How to activate Windows Vista?
Hope this information is useful.
