Vista to Xp slow file sharing in one direction

Dear all,

I am struggling to untangle what appears to be an unusual problem.

I have three PCs two under XP Pro and Vista Home premium.

All have either Gigabit network cards, or Gigabit chips on board.

XP PCs share data at a very healthy network capacity 25 to 30%, and similarly I can pull or push data from the PC from XP to Vista PC to a slightly smaller capacity of 15-20%.

Problem is that any push or pull data from the PC is Vista XP PC takes forever! capacity of 0.3 per cent.

Can anyone give advice on how to reset the side possibly Vista network, or maybe a suggestion on how to fix.

Thank you very much for all your support.
D.

Donchik,

Make sure that your Vista system is fully updated with Windows Update with all service packs. SP1 is particularly important be it resolved several problems of network.
Also, make sure that you have updated drivers for your network card. If you need help to find the driver, I'm going to need the brand and model of your laptop.
I hope this helps!

  • Vista do not you answer ping - file sharing also stopped working

    Greetings!
I have problems with my windows vista computer. It can access the internet, load the pages and other servers, ping, but he stopped answering the ping requests and file sharing has stopped working (other computers cannot access its actions).
-J' have already disabled the two firewalls (both windows and f-secure).
-If I run wireshark, I can see the Ping ICMP requests (as they arrive at the machine), but ignores them (no ICMP response).
-When I try to browse the computer from another windows (windows 7), he sees the computer (they are on the same workgroup), but it is impossible to browse. Try to access it from a mac also fails.
-J' tried to use direct ip address instead of the netbios name, with no luck (access to \\192.168.1.101, for example).
-Of course, I tried already reboot my router, computers, etc.
-sfc/scannow detected a few corrupted files (but says he fixed them). But it did not help.
-J' thought that it might be a problem with windows system files, so I uninstalled SP2 and then reinstalled with no luck at all.
-J' already tried to reset the tcp ip (netsh int ip reset) stack but also had no success.
-I'm clean of viruses; already run 3 different AVs (including boot from rescue CD to detect rootkits) and nothing came.
I'm almost reinstall my whole windows, but I'm afraid even if it cannot solve the problem and having to install from scratch and reinstall * all * my new aplications will be a last operation of the station. Clues as to what I could do? Is there a way manually reset/reinstall only the sectors/services windows network?
    Thank you for your time,
    Gustavo

    Greetings!

Just the answer I finally had myself on this issue.
The problem was a malware removal tool called Combofix. I had an infection and several tools to clean, one of which was this tool. I ignored the warning to leave unattended a guru of malware removal, and I just let it do its job (I know, I was wrong... but desperate times require desperate measures). Apparently, he finished and my system was working fine... but not the file share and ping responses.
Finally, there is a way to reverse the changes made by the latter:
    • Go to C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\subs\erdnt.exe, double-click erdnt.exe , and then restart the machine.
    • If this does not work, then navigate to C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\Hiv-backup\erdnt.exe, double-click erdnt.exe and restart the machine.
By doing this, the reverse tool changes to the system registry and these two services that weren't previously returned to work normally.
The Trojan horse itself not worried anymore, because I ran Combofix all as precautionary measure, since I had already deleted the Trojan horse itself (ZeroAccess, by the way).
That being said, I would think twice before getting a Dell computer next time... The version of Vista that comes with it only allows a 'Clean Install' and not 'upgrade install', which seriously complicates to reinstall the system failure (since I have to reinstall * everything *). I wonder if other versions of windows to PC manufacturers have the same limitations...

    1. If it is the domain controller, you cannot change the name of the computer by selecting network ID and this is normal.
    2. If it is a member of the computer in domain or workgroup, you don't have permission to change the name of the computer.

Hi Malharsire and thanks for posting!

First of all you can try disabling IPv6 on your PC.

    To do this:

    1. Start > Control Panel > view network status and tasks (under network and Internet)
    2. Has chosen to manage network connections in the left menu
    3. Right-click on Local area connection and select Properties
    4. In the pop up box, uncheck the following:
      • Internt Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
    5. Click OK, and then RESTART your computer

    I hope this helps!

  • Slow connection to SMB/AFP file sharing

    Configuration:

    OSX 10.11.3 (15 D 21)

    Server V5.0.4

Running services: calendar, file sharing, Manager profiles, Time Machine, VPN, Web, Wiki, DNS, FTP sites, open the directory

We have a problem which has lasted for several months where clients that attempt to connect to file sharing (AFP or SMB makes no difference) takes too long to authenticate. He constantly takes ~ 40-45 seconds to open a session or even reject a bad password. The really strange part is that it affects all computers on our network with the exception of a Mac Mini. Seems not be customer specific, i.e. all users connect without delay on a Mac Mini and slowly on other computers. I was not able to determine differences in settings of network connection or on different computers, but I don't know there are parameters, I'm not aware of that.

Did someone met with something like that?

    Thanks in advance.

The faster connection Mac Mini there the active local folders?  Or using a faster SMB protocol?

  • File sharing problem

I have four computers in small office. Three see each other, the fourth XP invisable on a Windows network. They all have the same name of "workgroup". and file sharing enabled. I can ping other but cannot get windows network to see?   Number four computer is configured to share files, I ran the wizard several times to double check that the names are the same.  Any suggestion would be appreciated.  James

You left out the part where you tell us what version of Windows is located on each computer. This is important.

What follows is quite old, but still excellent, former MS MVP Malke boards:

Here are the steps of general network troubleshooting. Just cannot apply to your situation, so just take the bits that are. It may seem daunting, but if you follow the steps in the links and suggestions below calmly and consistently, you will have no difficulty to implement your sharing.

Excellent, comprehensive, but easy to understand article on sharing files/printer under Vista. Contains information about sharing printers and files, and the folders: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

For XP, start by running the Network Setup Wizard the on all machines (see warning in section A below).

Problems sharing files between computers on a network are usually caused by 1) a misconfigured firewall or a firewall neglected (including a dynamic firewall in a virtual private network); or (2) inadvertently run two firewalls such as the firewall of Windows and a third-party firewall. and/or (3) do not have accounts to the same users and passwords on all computers in the workgroup. (4) tries to create actions where the operating system does not.

    A. configure the firewall on all machines to allow traffic to local area network (LAN) as being approved. With the Windows Firewall, it means which allows file sharing / print on the Exceptions tab normally run the XP Network Setup Wizard will take care of this for these machines. The only "witch hunt", it will turn on the XPSP2 Windows Firewall. If you are not running a third-party firewall or you have an antivirus with "Internet Worm Protection" (like Norton 2006/07) which acts as a firewall, you're fine.  With a third-party firewall, I usually set up the allocation of LAN with an IP address range. E.g. would be 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.254. Obviously you would substitute your correct subnet. Do not run more than one firewall. DON'T STOP FIREWALLS; CONFIGURE THEM CORRECTLY.

    (B) to facilitate the Organization, put all computers in the same workgroup. This is done from the System applet in Control Panel, the computer name tab.

    C. create the counterpart of the user accounts and passwords on all machines. You do not need to be logged into the same account on all machines and assigned to each user account passwords can be different; accounts/passwords just need to exist and to match on all machines. DO NOT NEGLECT TO CREATE PASSWORDS, EVEN IF ONLY OF SIMPLE. If you want a machine to boot directly to the desktop (a particular user account) for convenience, you can do this. The instructions on this link work for XP and Vista: set up Windows for the connection automatically (MVP Ramesh) - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm

    D. Si one or more of the computers is XP Pro or Media Center, turn off Simple file sharing (Folder Options > view tab).

    E. create share as you wish. XP Home does not share the users directory or the Program Files, but you can share folders inside those directories. A better choice is to simply use the Shared Documents folder. See the first link above for more information on Vista sharing.

    F. you have the job of file sharing (and tested by exchanging a file between machines), if you want to share a printer connected locally to one of your computers, share of this machine. Then go to the printer mftr Web site. and download the latest drivers for the correct system. Install them on the target machines. The printer must be collected during the installation procedure. If this isn't the case, install the drivers and then use the Add Printer Wizard. In some cases, printers must be installed as local printers, but it is outside this response.

  • very slow file read/copy of WinXP to Win7

I have two PCs, it is WInXP, one is Win7.  On Win7, I produce read/copy of WinXP to Win7, it is very slow, about 10% of the 100 Mbps network (as indicated by the Task Manager and the status of file copy).  However, if I do the copy of file for WinXP to Win7, it is very fast, about 90% of the 100 Mbps.

It is using windows file sharing.

    Why is this?

Please note that all operations are done on the Win7 PC, I have not tried to do it on PC WinXP again.  There are a few problems with Windows XP, access to the share on the Win7 PC (which can access any other PC Win7).  But it is not so important.

I do regular files between WinXP PC at work, they are typically 50% of 100 Mbps.
