Vista update repeatedly fails to install

Problem: I've tried several times to apply the latest Windows updates to my Vista Home Premium (SP2) system. Everytime I try I am informed that the update failed with error code 80070020. (During attempts to update it tells me that the updates may not be configured correctly).

After checking the error code 80070020 on the Windows site, I tried both a) disable the antivirus software (Avast) b) perform a clean full reboot
None of these works

I have already submitted a request on the site SUpport and Microsoft Help (see link below) and used Diagnostic tool, but they don't have a tell asking me the same question here (not very useful)

Points:

(1) I only wanted to read this:

.... Then, I found that the update had apparently been installed months ago ...

(a) you can rename the folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, but much better is used this FixIt:

http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/971058

Perhaps this might help and updates would not be on the list of the automatic updates because they are already installed.

(b)-

(c)-

(2) is OK, how I already wrote - "gmreadme.txt" - is only a txt file.

Try looking in history ofupdatesif updates are already installed.
