  I have a HP tablet PC laptop vista a little home less than 2 years. I downloaded the updates, I unfortunately don't know what they where. My laptop was asked to restart I did.   If this does not fix it you can rename the pending.xml file and restart.  To do this, boot from the DVD and enter the command line.  Then type:
  CD windows\winsxs - press on enter
  Ren pending.xml pending.old - press on enter

  About 2 days ago I updated 2 Optional updates through windows update. It was - Input - Synaptics Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad
  and somethind to do with sound hdmi (don't know why I got this update ' cos I do not have a hdmi and I accidentally installed it as well).

  OK, thanks to a thread on DANIWEB here is the solution to my problem - Hiren BootCD (v15.1). MiniXP to start and run difficult HDD controller app. This allowed Vista to boot far enough to get the cd accompanying the motherboard. Later, life is good, Vista hasn't even complained on the new motherboard and licenses.
