VM CPU cores

Hi, is it possible to allocate a VM CPU cores, suppose for example a virtual machine has 2 cores per processor and 2vCPU - is it possible. and what is the advantage rather that say assign 4vCPU?

Yes, it is possible. Some operating systems do not support a large number of sockets (processors), but allow multi-core processors. If you for example 4 vCPUs for an OS that doesn't support 2-shot, you will need to present virtual multi-core vCPUs at the prompt. Another reason for multi-core vCPUs could be per-socket licensing for applications.

I've had computers since the 98 so I'm not a beginner, but I'm also no computer genius.

I got this new laptop in 2013. So far I have had a few problems with it, but since I also have a desktop computer (works in 32 bit Vista), I could get things to normal by doing some research on google. Nothing major since the last time I restored it to the plant that was in June of this year.

Anyway, recently I came "Open Hardware Monitor" mainly to check the temperature, and I noticed it says that there are only 2 CPU cores. I find it weird because I thought it was supposed to be a Quad-Core.

I was wondering how I can go on double check that and let the other 2 cores? Who would even wise to do?

I don't really like for all the eye-candy as much as I want my machine to be fast and allow multitasking. I also plan to upgrade the RAM at the present time it is still running factory - I think that 6 G, but I would like to upgrade to the best and the best as well.

I have a Samsung's Ext to 5 t hard drive soon and I want to just make sure that my mess is as soon as possible within reasonable limits of course. I try not to fry or something. I want it to run at maximum performance.

In any case, I appreciate any help or advice I can get. Thank you for your time. Amanda

Just uncheck it. The default is to allow all processors to run. Somehow your system has limited the number of operational cores to 2. Uncheck and reboot and recheck the Task Manager

The task manager has two graphics and I can change to/from the "one graph per cpu and one graph, all CPUs" in the options display, although that I thought she should have 4 graphics; which is logical that the CPU has 4 wires, so should have 4 graphics.

Any ideas? I tried msconfig and reset the number of processors, but then it resets the memory to 2 GB so I have to reset that and restart it to recognize all the 6 GB of ram. but then my cpu is a nucleus! It seems that I have a dual core cpu and 2 GB of RAM or a simple core cpu and 6 GB ram! ATM I'm on a single processor core with 6 GB of ram. I think the only thing I can do is reset the cpu in msconfig and reboot and see if it works, but then it will set the RAM to 2 GB. I 'afraid' to uncheck the CPU and RAM at the same time, incase of my laptop computer won't load at all. What do you think?

It is not too much a problem; If I had only 2/3 GB of RAM, then it would be a problem, would be just nice to have my CPU dual core of return!

As always, I would be really grateful for any help with it.

  • ESXi 5.1 & 5.0 - ordinal number for active Hyperthreaded Intel CPU Core

OK, I think I asked this before, maybe, about 2 years ago but I don't remember what the answer was.

    So here's the question...

In a host of CPU 2 where each CPU has 4 cores for a total of 8 cores BUT with technology HT (Hyperthreading) enabled, for a total of 16 cores, how can you determine what core HT is and what the ordinal position?

I thought that the ordinal went like this...

    CPU 0:

    0 base = true core

    Base 1 = Core HT

    Base 2 = real basic

    Basic 3 = Core HT

    4 basic = true core

    5 core = Core HT

    6 basic = true core

    7 core = Core HT

    CPU 1:

    8 basic = true core

    9 core = Core HT

    Base 10 = true core

    11 core = Core HT

    12 basic = true core

    13 core = Core HT

    14 basic = true core

    15 core = Core HT

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Hyperthreading and ESXi hosts

A host that is enabled for hyperthreading should behave similarly to a host without hyperthreading. You may need to take into consideration certain factors if you enable hyperthreading, however.

ESXi hosts manage time processor intelligently in order to ensure that the load is distributed smoothly on CPU cores in the system. Logical processors on the same core have consecutive numbers of CPU, so that CPU 0 and 1 are on the first core set, CPU 2 and 3 are on the kernel, second and so on. Virtual machines are preferentially on demand on two different cores rather than on the two logical processors on the same kernel.

If there is no work for a logical processor, it is put in a stopped state, which releases its resources to enforcement and allows the virtual machine running on the other logical processor on the same kernel to use the resources of the full implementation of the core. VMware scheduler correctly represents for this downtime and the load of a virtual machine running with all the resources of a core more than a virtual machine running on a basis of one half. This approach to processor management ensures that the server does not violate standard ESXi resources allocation rules.

Consider that your management needs before you enable the processor affinity on servers using hyperthreading. For example, if you link a virtual machine of high priority to the CPU 0 and one other high-priority CPU 1, two virtual machines virtual machine must share the same physical core. In this case, it may be impossible to respect requests for resources of these virtual machines. Ensure that all custom settings affinity of meaning for a hyperthreading system.

  • in vm CPU cores

    Hello

Running windows 2003 standard 64-bit vm and try to get allows them to use multiple cores CPU instead of multiple vcpus.

As a test, I gave the vcpu image 4 x and it displays correctly 4 graphics processor in the Manager of tasks and 4 processors in Device Manager.

I also tried setting the cpuid.coresPerSocket using different values (2, 4 etc.) but that does not increase the amount of graphics and the specified processors.

I it is dropped back to 1 and 2 vcpu and tried carrots by socket yet still no extra processor graphics.

Is there anything else I should do as the plan is to get 4 cores for a sql database instead of having to use several vcpu for licensing reasons.

The physical representation of a vCPU is a kernel.

That's right, as you do not increase the number of vCPU'. Example: If you have a host with 4 dual-core CPUS (8 cores) and run Windows 2003 SE on it, get physical Windows is reported that there are 4 CPU with 2 hearts of each. Even that Windows 2003 SE is limited to 4 CPUS, it would still run on all 8 cores.

In a virtual machine, it gets reported that you assigned. Suppose that 4 vCPU. If Windows thinks that it works on 4 CPUS with the nucleus of one (!). So now the physical box that he must deal with a maximum of 4 cores (out of 8).

Change that and let the guest to run on all 2 4 CPU cores, you must assign 8 vCPU for prompt and set parameter 2. Then Windows will run on 8 cores because he sees 4 CPU with 2 hearts of each. And Windows 2003 himself is limited by the CPU is not carrots.

  • VSphere essentials 8 cpu cores

    Hi all

We recently have quote a customer to purchase vsphere essentials with a server that will run 2 processors 6 hearts of each.

After a month, that the customer has accepted the quote if we order the server, but we noticed it came with 2 CPUs, 8 cores on each. We always evaluate vsphere esxi 4.1 and we haven't bought yet most of license. The reason to upgrade to vsphere essentials was to migrate 3-4 very old physical servers to this new server. No need to HA or vmotion is necessary. We needed an inexpensive way to get rid of these old servers.

Can someone explain to us what will be the situation if buy us the essentials license and insert it on vsphere? Esxi 4.1 vsphere will continue to operate with limited cpu core feature or it will prevent all our VMs to stop working?

    Thank you

I can't answer your question with certainty, and I think the only one who can is VMware itself.

My guess is that it can work, but you're probably violating the EULA.

What I actually wanted to mention are the fact that some harware like HP providers offer a known BIOS setting 'disable Core processor'. This feature allows to disable some carrots.

    of http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01905798/c01905798.pdf

When to turn off the processor cores

While disabling the carrots may seem paradoxical to provide superior performance, there are at least three situations in which the disabling processor cores may be beneficial.

-Use of power reduction. Disabling the processor cores reduces processor power consumption. If a server is used in an environment that is not heavily dependent on multithreading hearts, by disabling the can reduce energy consumption without significantly affecting performance.

-Increase overall performance. Some applications take advantage of higher frequency of basis rather than extra processing cores. When Turbo Mode is activated for processors Intel Nehalem, savings on electricity and heat produced by disabling the processor cores allows the remaining sons operate at a higher frequency than their rated speed. In the specific application environments, this could actually increase the overall performance of the system.

-Meet the licensing issues. Some software are permitted on a basis of by heart. Deactivation of the cores allows an administrator to match the number of active cores on a server with licensing requirements. However, some software that is allowed on a per-core basis may not recognize the deactivation of carrots.

  • Windows 7 - Disable CPU Core Parking, it works.

I recently heard of a technical guy on Windows 7, it is features that call parking core, which would be activated / deactivated your processor from time to time. And that's the main cause you're system is the momentary lock and lock upward for some time, that happened when the core parking and discount is trigger.

For observed if you are affected, you can open the task, goto performance manager, then open resource manager.

then in the CPU tab, you will see some of your hearts are stationed, and they would be parked / unparked from time to time.

What I would like to ask is, if someone knows its safe or not to turn it off and succeeded, after doing so.

Here are the steps that I got from this guy, although I found that it is very difficult.

  • [Aspire P3 - 171] Windows 10 CPU core problems

I have recently upgraded to Windows 10 on my P3-171. I have installed all the drivers and Windows updates from the support (including the recent BIOS) page, but everything was always very slow.

After watching the performance information in the Task Manager I have seen that the CPU is strangled permanently at 800 MHz. the power of the restorations of switching device the CPU real clock frequency, but it restart the system resets to 800 MHz.

In addition, Windows 10 can use a carrot. All cores/threads appear in the Task Manager, but that only one thread is used, the other three sons stay inactive even in conditions of heavy use.

I looked at my process affinity and each of them are automatically set to only CPU 0. Try to change the affinity is ignored (it simply comes down to only CPU 0 immediately thereafter).

Anyone know how to solve these problems? Otherwise I guess I'll have to choice but to downgrade to Windows 8...

    Hello

If you have the time and space on the HARD drive, you could try to install another windows 10 OS from a USB and check if you have this question in a new facility that has not been upgraded. It may be that the settings were screwed upward when you went from w8 to w10. I do not recommend to do a refresh of the settings Windows 10 PC because you will lose the possibility of returning to the w8.

However, you will need a partition to do this. I really think that the issue is in the process of upgrading and a fresh windows would work OK, but I can't guarantee it.

I am bound by 3rd party software to run a 32 bit kernel in case someone should wonder why, I'm not using a 64-Bit kernel.

If I run ' cat/proc/cpuinfo' it implements a basic info saying that there are only 8 cores. release of "lscpu", said the same thing.

As I understand things, lshw displays the BIOS of the server said is there.

cat/proc/cpuinfo more is a release of what has detected the kernel.

  • Windows resource monitor shows only a CPU core when he should have four.

    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, SP1
    Intel Core i3 2330 m-hyperthreading

Resource monitor normally indicates two nuclei and Hyperthreaded (a total of four graphs) when seen on the tab CPU recently single core (one graph) is displayed. This change is caused by one of the updates of Windows or an indicator of a hardware problem? Is there a recommended KB or a patch that solves it?

original title: change of resource monitor (?)

You asked: "what version of Windows 7 do you have?" ... Home Premium x 64, SP1 as indicated at the beginning of my first post.

As my screen name, incurably curious, says I couldn't let it go. Assistance in the meantime, I searched tirelessly and found a cure. I had to make a change through msconfig. I don't have any idea how the settings have been changed because no one else is using this machine.  [????] (Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes returns own scans; so I doubt that the cause is associated malware.) The following explains what I've done and the results.

    1. I went into msconfig > startup > advanced options and find the number of processors, set one. The arrow to expand a menu drop-down has also shown that a single processor. Which did not make sense because my processor Intel Core i3 2330 M's two core with hyperthreading.
    2. I unchecked the box and restart the computer.
    3. I returned the number of processors as described in #1 above. Expand the menu gave me the choice of 1, 2, 3 or 4 processors. I chose two and checked the box.
    4. I rebooted the computer again.
    5. I checked the monitor of resources (via the Task Manager) and found multiple graphics, I'm used to the display. The graphics are labeled: Service use of the CPU, CPU 0, 1 parked CPU 2 CPU and CPU3 parked.
    6. Parked CPU1 and CPU3 parked show no activity, which is expected. These show only activity when hyperthreading is active, which is rare with the programs I run. Only programs written specifically to hyperthreading use the feature.
    7. CPU utilization service CPU2 and CPU0 show activity as expected.
    8. Manager tasks shows four graphs still now.

The reason why I know not what to expect is that I have upgraded RAM and completed cooling there are a few months and one of my tools use resource monitor to control the computer. (I used other means to monitor the internal temperature). I managed to run enough programs to use more than 7 GB, the 8 GB available RAM and CPU usage Dungeon in the range of 75 to 100% for more than an hour during trials. Hyperthreading (CPU1 and CPU3) clearly indicated to be active too. Time CPU ran in the range 165F without additional cooling and order of 125-130 with additional cooling.

I will wait for return of the answers with explanations and/or questions until I got this mark as resolved.

  • Number of CPU cores required (Virtual vs. physical) for video editing 4 K Prime Minister?

    Hi all.

About to start my own business / video editing. I'm doing a customized version of PC. I am considering a motherboard very processor dual Xeon with maybe 64 GB of RAM and a certified Quadro 4 GB or 8 GB GPU. The 4 k I intend to work on commercials under 15 long minutes, will take place with an average of 3 video tracks and 2 audio tracks.

When it comes to running Adobe Premier Pro 5.5 or 6 (for 4K editing video and rendering), I read that it is recommended to have 12 hearts in each of the two processors. (The PDF I read was an official guide of 2015 from Intel: "Hardware Performance Guide: serious 4 K editing ')

Now, I wonder if this figure of 12 cores per processor is related to PHYSICAL cores, or ALL hearts including VIRTUAL cores (.. .If it is referred to all the hearts, so I just need to buy two 6 core processors, giving a total of 24 cores can be used.) Big price difference between a 6 core CPU and a 12 core...

The Xeon series which will be compatible with my MB is the 2600 CPU of the E5 v3 family. Stories of advice or that popular horror...!

    Paul.

guide intel suggests probably 12 real hearts, possibly the v3 of E5-2680. It would be double Xeon 24/48 virtual hearts.

software Adobe does not need the features on the quadro, using the version of game/Office nvidia gtx can help save money.

If you need 10 bit out for the color correction, view maps of mfg as blackmagic, aja and others may be a better option.

have you already bought the motherboard?

Hardware requirements may vary for different types of media and project as multi-cam configurations. codecs like h264/5 are very difficult for the processor process and the gpu should be handled, but first does not currently support gpu accelerated encoding/decoding. This is what can lead to dual xeons as intel recommends. Dual cpu also have large overhead, reducing their combined processing power. Another reason why intel may recommend the 12 core dual processor. If you use the less demanding codecs such as prores or dnxhr, UC must be as powerful, and can even be possible to use a single processor. Some people transcode their sequences of difficult codecs like h264/5 prores or dnxhr as a whole work rather than buy a more powerful system to manage h264/5 when editing.

    Hackers Page - Video Codecs

Intel PDF: "Hardware Performance Guide: serious 4 K editing."

It is important to note that software engineers need to write specific code to take advantage of some features like multiple nuclei (multithreading) and virtual cores (hyper-threading). Consumer applications such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects already take full advantage of these features.

If you check that the tests carried out here: Tweakers Page - decide between one processor or dual CPU and read through the discussions here and other websites, you will find the results against this last sentence. software Adobe has long had problems fully multi-threads, the first is not as bad as some of the other adobe programs but can still have problems.
