VMDK crushed by scp - how to recover

Hi all

yesterday, shit that's happened. I accidentally ran over an important (read: lots of work has been put in) flat vmdk file with scp.

I was in/vmfs/volumes/datastore1/and did something like scp - r VM root @ownip:/ /vmfs/volumes/datastore1 /

The scp was executed and copied about 2 GB, which is now the new drive size. In a panic, I closed the session of the scp and the copy stopped.

Thus, the vmdk file is "replaced" by a new file of 2 GB. Of course the virtual machine is not running right now.

Although I don't have a lot of confidence to find a working solution, I would like to know if someone knows things I can try?

Google does not give me sufficient responses at the moment...

Do not delete VMDK accidentally if you use ESXi 5.5 or 6

Take a look at the post above (url), written by continuumcontinuum, it might be able to help.

  • How to recover files from a missing disk

Sometimes, my DVD player disappears from Windows Explorer and Device Manager.  I tried all the normal steps to stop the problem (remove UpperFilters and so forth), but it still happens from time to time.  When the disk is visible, it works fine.  The problem is that when I tried to move some images there in Windows Explorer to burn them on a CD, the drive has disappeared in the middle of the movement.  Now, the folders appear in the window of the E: drive (I have not closed the window or turned off power the computer since this happened), but I can't undo the move or copy them.

I get the error "E:\ refers to a location that is unavailable.  It can be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. etc... »

I can do to get the files back, or that I lose the files forever?

Work with your system and not the CD to do so.

If you have Vista Business, Vista Ultimate or Vista Enterprise, you can be lucky.  They have so-called saves shadow copies, which are deleted or modified files that can be recovered in case changes/deletions made by mistake.  http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/Windows-Vista/features/shadow-copy.aspx more information about how to use this feature to: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/howdoi/?p=145.

If you have Vista Basic or Premium of Vista, shadow copies is not available; However, there is an alternative that is free and the shadow copies feature called Shadow Explorer. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/recover-files-with-shadow-copies-on-any-version-of-windows-vista/.  Although it will not help you this time, it could very well save you in case this happens again.

In case this does not work (not all files are available through shadow - it occurs periodically), here are some additional free recovery programs that might help:

    http://www.SnapFiles.com/freeware/system/fwdatarecovery.html (first try Recuva)

http://www.SnapFiles.com/get/DiskDigger.html (try this second - if this does not work then the chances of recovery are very slim but you can try the other options if you want to).

    http://www.SnapFiles.com/get/easusdfr.html

    http://www.SnapFiles.com/get/restoration.html

    http://www.SnapFiles.com/downloads/Recuva/dlrecuva.html

    http://www.SoftPerfect.com/products/FileRecovery/

    http://techpaul.WordPress.com/2008/06/23/how-to-recover-your-lost-files/

The files are not really deleted until they are crushed (although they are no longer available through conventional methods).  If you decide to try these recovery programs, you should stop using your drive hard immediately in order not to replace the data that you are trying to recover.  He slave on another PC and launch the recovery of this PC.  Even now you have definitely lost some of them if you use the same PC.  If you can not do this (slave on another PC), you run the risk of overwriting the data with every action you do on the PC (but you may still be able to recover some or most or even all files - it's a matter of luck).

Only you can decide if the data is important enough to take the PC to an expert data recovery to recover files (they will have better programs and hardware to do that none of us do, and I've provided above).  Do NOT go to the Geek Squad or one of these centers of store-, they generally don't know what they are doing - it take for expert data recovery.  It will cost you a little and they generally offer no guarantees.  The decision is yours.

With regard to your CD player is going, you need to update the device drivers for it. Go to the Device Manager by going to start / find and type Device Manager and enter and then double-click on the program icon that appears.  Check each device to a red x, yellow! or white?  These identify devices with problems probably (drivers, but also of conflict or something else).  Click on each for more details and troubleshooting tips.  If you need to get the drivers (and do it for your CD-ROM drive), to leave the computer dealer or the manufacturer of the device (NOT of Microsoft Updates).  In fact, you must disable automatic updates in Windows Update driver as follows: http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-disable-automatic-driver-installation-in-windows-vista/. Follow these steps to get the drivers: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/driverssupport/ht/driverdlmfgr.htm.  Once you have the drivers, you can install them via the following device manager: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/193584-device-manager-install-driver.html

If new drivers do not help, try swapping try it with one you know works and see if the problem moves.  The road from the other work of the computer is on your computer?  Drive your conputer there problems on the other computer?  If so, you have a hardware problem with the CD player and need to replace.

You have computer anotherr to test the CD that you tried to do to see if it contains any files or data that are accessible?  Try some of the above recovery tools on the CD to see if you are able to recover files that have been moved (it might work).

Good luck and I hope this helps!

I've never had a problem sending & or receive e-mail before these days. All of a sudden the Send button has disappeared and my address list on the left side also disappeared.
I find help that suggests the opening of Scripture and then press F9 to retrieve the list of addresses. The list of addresses returned on the left, but did not appear as he used to say. the length of the screen. What is however now it will be satisfactory. The button 'send' is still missing which is frustrating because I was not able to send emails for about a week now.

    Open a window of writing.
Do you have the toolbar of Composition with Send-spelling-Attach, etc?
Otherwise go to the Menu bar and select display-toolbars and turn it back on.
If you are also missing the bar of menus with top view, press the alt key to display, and then turn on the missing toolbars.

If you have some of the bar Composition tools but lack just the Send button, click with the right button on the toolbar and select Customize. Find the button send in the dialog box that opens, and he reglisser in place.

See below for my disk utility:

    Hello waynetay,

Thank you for being part of the community of Apple!

Looks like you want to recover the hard disk space that has been used by Bootcamp.  I know how critical disk hard space is, as I understand it want to access it.

The Boot Camp Assistant should have added space on the side of Mac OS X from the hard drive when it has been used to remove Windows.  Since that didn't happen, you need to back up the system, and then erase the hard drive, then restore the backup.

First, back up the computer.  Your computer has software called Time Machine.  It is a fantastic software for backing up your computer.  Information on how to use Time Machine is available here:

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

Once you have the backup, you must erase the drive and then restore the backup Time Machine.

You can use these measures to erase files on your startup drive and install a fresh copy of OS X:

    1. Before you begin, make sure that your Mac is connected to the Internet.
    2. Restart your Mac. Immediately hold down the command (⌘) keys and R after having heard the startup sound to boot into OS X Recovery.
    3. When the recovery window, select disk utility, then click on continue.
    4. Select the volume name back from your startup disk in the left side of the disk utility window, then click Delete.
    5. If you want to erase the disc safely, click Security Options. Select an erasing method, and then click OK.
    6. On the Format menu, choose Mac OS extended (journaled). Type a name for your drive, and then click clear.
    7. After that the drive is deleted, close the disk utility window.
    8. If you are not connected to the Internet, select a network in the Wi-Fi menu.
    9. Select the option to reinstall OS X.
    10. Click on continue and follow the instructions on the screen to reinstall OS X.

Once OS X installation is complete, you should have the option to restore from a backup Time Machine in the first installation of OS X.  Choose this option, and the computer will restore everything that was on it before it has been removed.  More information can be found here:
