VMDK increase question

Hello

I would like to increase the space vdisk to a vmachine that flows into the esxi 5.5 (hypervisor) but I see that the maximum capacity is 55 GB and now uses the 55GO. It is a free space in the data store and this happens only with this specific virtual machine, if I try to do it on other vmachines I have the possibility to increase the vm more than 55 GB. For example, for an another vm have the option to increase up to 300 GB. I've attached a picture that shows the problem.

vmdk_increase_issue.jpg

Any ideas on this subject? The two vdisks are thick lazy disposition to zero.

Thank you!

  • ESXi 5.5, 5 VMFS datastore / vmdk size question

Trying to check that I understand the vmdk for esxi 5.5 size limitation.

If I have a VMFS 5 existing on my 5.0 esxi hosts, data store once I update my hosts to esxi 5.5 that I would then be able to have vm with vmdk is greater than 2 TB?

I don't have to create new warehouses of data VMFS 5 after the upgrade to esxi5.5 take advanrage of the change in file size limit?

    Thanks for any help.

That's right, at least in part. In addition to the upgrade of the host, you must also upgrade the hardware version of the virtual machine (Compatibility Mode) to take advantage of larger virtual disks (up to ~ to 62). However, always keep in mind the time needed to restore the virtual disk together where this is necessary. With 1 Gbps - assuming that you have the full available bandwidth - 2 TB will require more than 5 hours already! Then maybe organize the data in several virtual disks may be a better solution.

  • Files VMDK, simple question...

I just build an image for installation of ACE. The machine came with a set of VMDK files (I think) and now I finished installing the tools I want there seems to be two sets... cl5 - s001.vmdk seems to have been that with... cl5-000001 - s001.vmdk etc.

Is this normal, with WS6.5 I have never seen before. The guy who did the original is a 'snapshot' or something?  Want just a brief explanation as to what I really can they be merged back?

    This is the log file.

  • VMDK virtual disk to the other folder

    Hello

Before I started my new job we have run into some problems with our file server, Server22, with the CPU usage. IT consulting company that has implemented suggested it was something with the installation of windows, so they created a new virtual machine named Server22 which was just the C drive and tied the former Server22 data to the new drive. By making our virtual disk data still resides in the file of old Server22. I want to move, but want to find the right procedure to do. Is as simple as right clicking and pressing on "move to" browser data store? I've attached a screenshot of what I'm trying to do. I would like to move Server22.vmdk in the Server22_1 folder to the NewServer22 folder.

    Thank you

Hi, you cannot move the vmdk while the virtual machine is running.  Here's a high-level steps:

    1. stop the virtual machine
    2. detach the vmdk in question.
    3. move the vmdk into the desired folder.
    4. Fix again the vmdk.
    5. Turn on the virtual machine.

Once you have completed the move and happy with the results, you can rename the c# VM and perform storage vmotion and everything should correspond correctly with the name.

  • Manipulate the vmdk is attached to a virtual machine

I'm looking for an API or SDK or method or library or hack that will allow me to move the virtual disks between the virtual machines. I'm looking for a way to "detach" a VMDK to a VM (power off) and then "link" it to another virtual machine, which would then be able to read and write to and from the (virtual) disk, like his own boot disk? Something along the lines of: (Java psuedocode)

The API method you use is the ReconfigVM_Task - http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vc-sdk/visdk41pubs/ApiReference/vim.VirtualMachine.html#reconfigure and who is a generic method on the reconfiguration of your virtual machine under the name of the States method. What you need to do as part of the reconfiguration, is to create a specification of deviceChange that performs a specific operation for the VMDK in question. You will perform a 'delete' operation that allows you to detach and you can then create a new file deviceChange for the virtual machine specifications in question perform an operation 'Add '.

Here's vSphere SDK for Perl script that implements the basic functionality that you can use as a reference

  • Cannot expand vmdk

    Hi all

I have a problem when trying to expand a vmdk, either using the graphical interface or by using the command line vmware-vdiskmanager-x.

When using the console, trying to expand the GB 8.00 to 20.00 G disc, I get this error: "reconfigure Virtual Machine" has not completed. If these problems persist... with detail "not enough space on the data store."

The VMDK in question exist on partitions with & gt; 100 GB of free space, this is also the case with the partition of the host operating system or elsewhere, we might be trying to write to.

I noticed a few curious things:

The virtual disk is 8 GB, however the hard (-flat.vmdk, actually) is close to 27 GB in the host file system.  I corruption any?

For this virtual disk, I have a VirtualHost.vmdk and VirtualHost_flat.vmdk.  The first file is a few hundred bytes, while the _flat is the file ~ 27 GB.  The docs for vmware-vdiskmanager refer to the file _flat; I guess I should be after his convention anyway and the vmware-vdiskmanager x - operation on the normal Virtual.vmdk file?

And again, the _flat file contains clear data, but why is is a lot wider than the 8.00 GB VMWare recognizes?

    Thanks in advance...

    Drew

I've never seen such a problem. The descriptor file clearly indicates a virtual disk of 8 GB ('RW 16777216 DISH... (': (16777216 * 512) / 1024 ^ 3 = 8). And the physical file can be more significant than that...

I suggest you replace this vmdk, via a conversion either by cloning it.

    Good luck!

I don't know a good way to identify which application raised the dialog box, except via the menu bar.   If you have selected the dialog box, see if the name of the associated application is upwards in the menu bar.

Otherwise...   What elements of openness are present?   System Preferences > users and groups > login items.    Except maybe iTunesHelper, hover over the name of the application to get the path to the application, and then delete the entries you do not use or don't recognize, please disconnect and reconnect and see if the prompt disappears.

Otherwise, open Console.app from Applications > utilities and see if you can find a server connection error connected there.   There will be a lot of messages he and some will be pretty obscure or maybe even bad omen, and the deluge of text can be quite normal.   You are specifically looking for an error in Server connection with a timestamp at the time dialog box appears.

If you can not solve this problem from the steps above, then download and run Etrecheckand post the diagnosis report here and maybe someone can spot a package that raises this dialog box.

OS X 10.7.5 is quite far back that there may be problems to establish a secure connection, but it's a full proposal.  If your Mac allows, consider an upgrade to a newer version of Mac OS X.

Antivirus and Anti-malware packages have a long and sordid and increasingly questionable history and its effectiveness lately - by the industry itself - was rather less than 50% (and I suppose, fall), and the software has caused more than a few problems with stability and reliability.   Most people with OS X get put into bags by installing malicious software themselves, or through the so-called phishing; try to get the user to install the malware, or open access to the system to allow the attacker to connect and install malicious software.

Keep all Gatekeeper to allow only to App Store and identified the developers (System Preferences > Security and confidentiality), configure, and maintain Time Machine or another backup running tool and do not install anything you didn't pick.   I would probably also either disable or remove Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Flash and Java from Oracle, or at least keep them current and get a blocker plugin, because these are some of the most common paths to the Junk onto a system, if it is not directly installed by the user.

I just created a virtual machine with thin disks. I filled all the space on the hard drive and watched the vmdk increase in size. I deleted then 10 GB of files, but the vmdk was not afraid. Shouldn't the vmdk down in size when data is deleted? Do I have to manually reduce to reclaim the space?

You will need to manually reduce the drive to reclaim the space.   See this link on how to do.

currently batch seems to be ideal to perform the same action for a lot of files, but if I want to perform a repetitive action like this I can't understand.

  • question about SQL and VMDK places

Hello world. Im kinda new here so please be gentle

I'm confused on the locations of the files for sql.

At this moment I have 1 with 3 vmdk files sql server executes a muscular 100 GB sql database.

    My disks are as follows

    1 OPERATING SYSTEM

    2 DB

    3 newspapers

They are all thick and they are all stored with the virtual machine in the virtual machine configuration.

It lies in a cluster HA/DRS and we use them both.

The question boils down to performance.

If my VM is stored on DATASTORE_A and the VM folder on this data store has all the VMDK files in it, it would be safe to say that they are all on the same disk as much as vsphere is concerned.

Now to get best performance, I want to separate my VMDK files to separate data (with faster operation) warehouses to avoid conflicts of drive on my current data store. What is the right way to go about this?

How separate you your VMDK to other data warehouses, and enjoy other performance data store? WE do not use DTS at all so im sure it although we use HA/DRS in our group... and yet, I don't think that it is important in this case... just more of an FYI.

What do you do to get your SQL servers to run in vmware?

    Seems like a basic question.

The answer seems easy. Separate disks so that they do not fight.

'S virtually done it with VMDK but the data store underlying is 1 speed and they all exist on this subject, so... How to separate them at that level for best performance?

Also... once I keep them separated, how can I keep my sanity by knowing my VMDK are not with the virtual machine? This kind of made a mess . Of course the performance takes a front seat for my mental health.

    Thank you all

    1. If I sVmotion my other vmdk files via the advanced options of one in another data store, it will create the files folder structure based on my VM name and place the vmdk inside?  (I guess I could just test it and see).

Yes, the VM configuration file (.) VMX) will be modified to point to the new location of the virtual disk. You can use the virtual machine property editor to check for this, once the Storage vMotion.

    2. with regard to the disk controller, I assume you mean a virtual controller by VMDK in the vmx / correct the settings of the virtual machine and not a phyical on the hardware controller? (IM pretty sure I know the answer here but I just want to be clear).

Yes, the virtual controller is correct.

If so, what type of controller? LSI Logic or it would benefit all a paravirtual adapter?

As long as your operating system is supported, go with the PVSCSI every time - especially for newspapers and the controller file data.

  • Increase vmdk in vCenter5.0, need help

Hi, I have setup a lab on my computer with VMware workstation.

    Configuration of the laboratory:

2 ESXi hosts with the local data store

    1 ESxi1 with 100 GB

    2 ESXi2 with 200 GB

    1 vCenter Server

I created a VM in ESXi host and cannot increase the size of the vmdk via the properties of the virtual machine, the option is grayed out.

Eager to provision thick set to zero.  I have enough space on the data store. I tried different types of supply does not help. No photos.

    Help, please.

    Thank you

Check if the disk controller is not IDE - only LSI and BusLogic SCSI allows to increase disk.

  • Snapshot question: replaced VMDK in comments

    Hello

I have a guest from Vmware, customers running Windows 2003.  The client is configured with a single hard drive SCSI, but I ran into a situation where there was not enough space on disk/partition C: from the prompt (the original VMDK was 16 GB, with two partitions, C: and D :).)  I also have a bunch of shots of this comments so far, and the VMX pointed to the last snapshot, VMDK, something like "xxx - 0012.vmdk".

I did not see a way to increase the size of the VMDK in place, so what I did was:

-Use vmware-vdiskmanager and created a new prealloues 20 GB VMDK, "big.vmdk."

-Use Vmware to change the configuration of comments and added a new drive to the guest, pointing to "big.vmdk".

-J' then started the guest in bare metal of imaging product I use, BootItNG and BootItNG to clone the C: partition from the original drive to the new drive.  I then used BootItNG to resize the C: partition.

-J' I then re-configured the invited and removed the drive corresponding to the 'xxx - 0012.vmdk", for now: the guest had only 1 drive, pointing to"big.vmdk ".

I was then able to start the client for Windows, with the largest disk.

Everything worked, but now I'm a little puzzled by the situation with snapshots.  In particular, what happens if I try to take a snapshot of the guest at this stage?

I think that the snapshot is supposed to create a differential VMDK containing changes compared to the previous backup, which is the 'xxx - 0012.vmdk", right?

So if I now take a snapshot of the prompt, what happens?  I end with potentially a snapshot of 20 GB VMDK?

    Thank you

    Jim

If I do what you suggest, and before I take the 1 snapshot, this comments will have no snapshots at all at that time here?

I think that the answer is Yes?

Fix. That's why you should delete the file .vmsd.

That would be ok, but I think that before I do, I'll back up the directory to another drive (which has space).

    It is a good idea.

... and I think I should be able to do this by adding a new guest from that saved directory, right?

Right. You can create a new virtual machine and add the initial ramdisk. However, you will need to change the new virtual machine configuration (.vmx) file and set the disk for the instant vmdk virtual you manually, since this can be done in the GUI.

  • Question/VMDK file size

    Hello

We are in the process of starting a new company and have problems with VM data warehouses.

Most of our stores approximately 500 GB and 1 VM home each.

They all work quite as much as we want, but our 01 server continues to increase in size, and we have already had an accident.

I see a 01.Intro vmdk file that is 260 GB, but I see a second, 01 - 00001.vmdk that continues to grow in space.

I read that it is a kind of "Snapshot", but how can I make sure it gets moved to a different place, so it's not fillup the data store?

    And do I really need?

A new starter with that little so if you need more info ask please.

    Thank you

    Welcome to the forums

The second - 0000.vmdk you see is indeed a snapshot.

By the looks of it, you don't want this snapshot to be there.

To remove this snapshot, you click with the right button on the VM - snapshots - Snapshot manager

You should see a snapshot, so delete by clicking "Remove all" that commit snapshots originally vmdk, so you delete any data.

If you don't see a snapshot in the Snapshot Manager, you may need to create a new snapshot in VM - snapshots - Take snapshot

After the snapshot is complete, you can return to Snapshot Manager and remove all
