VMFS reformatting

I had volume VMFS version 3.  I disassembled my esxi 5 hosts, removed and then readded as vmfs 5.  My SAN has always think there about 1 TB used yet.  I thought that the addition of this return as VMFS 5 would reformat?

no need to disassemble, once the logic unit number is empty, simply remove.  The LUN is removed from all hosts in which he zoned and attend.  From there, you can 'add a storage' and add the LUN as VMFS5.

  • VMFS reformat to support 1 GB size?

    Hi all

I use VMWare ESXi 4.0 164009 with the VMFS v3.33 and now wonder how to increase the size of the disk in 2 MB block?

Because for the moment I could not create a unique virtual machine with big HDD more than 256 GB

When installing ESXi 4, I was not requested or provided with any choice to format the local data store with the support of larger block size.

Any kind of help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Kind regards

    AWT

If the disks are connected to a supported controller they will recognize.

You will have 2 drives by a "storage card" and you can add 2 new data store to the title of "storage".

With a cold (with VM power off) migrate then you can move your virtual machines.

  • Reformat to VMFS 5 LUN

I don't want to convert my VMFS-3 volumes so instead I created new VMFS 5 volumes, then I would reformat the old volumes.  Is that possible or do I need to remove the volumes and add their return from scratch?

If you have some VMFS3 volumes you would like to do VMFS5, but use a new format and no upgrade? Once they are empty you could delete and then use "add storage' once and give them the same name as above but select VMFS5. It's 'from scratch', but quite the same actions if you could just "re -" get in shape, which I'm not sure if it is possible. For example, the vmkfstools could create VMFS data warehouses, but empty as far as I know that the lun.

  • How to reformat vmfs with remote CLI?

I need to reformat my ESXi server to use a block of 4 MB (VMFS). Can anyone tell me the command to do this in the remote CLI?

If you need an example look at the previous comment.

Under Windows, the location of vmkfstools.pl is not available in the default path, you need to use the full path or the cd to C:\Program Files\VMware\...\perl (should be something like VI CLI, I have not installed so I don't know what is the file, but you should be able to determine the directory)

Update: Try here: C:\Program VMware VI Remote CLI\Perl

  • ISCSI dead and damaged VMFS partition metadata - cannot remove iSCSI

    Background:

    -1 Server vCenter

-5 ESXi hosts connected to vCenter Server

-2 (table 1 and table 2) iSCSI storage arrays

We started getting errors in metadata corruption table-1 VMFS and migrated all storage table-2 VMS.

The migration has been successful and virtual machines are operating normally.

Directories and drives hard virtual VM have been removed from table-1 automatically by the migration.

VM parameters see table-2 as the data store for all migrated virtual machines.

HOWEVER - we're still showing 4 virtual machines under related objects-> VM on table-1 (we moved more than 20 virtual machines, and only 4 had this problem). It is the only reference I can find these table-1 and virtual machines. I think that it is somehow related to metadata VMFS corrupt. I completely disconnected table-1 of the network and virtual computers operate normally if clearly is not yet using table-1.

THE PROBLEM - I can not remove the reference from table-1 my ESXi hosts iSCSI because they are 'in service' according to vCenter. I guess that's due to the incorrect references dangling these 4 virtual machines.

How can I remove the table-1 data store and/or each ESXi host iSCSI device so that I can reformat and Add again as a new data store? I already deleted the dynamic/static under the iSCSI SW map entries. He presents himself as 'dead', but it will not disappear because of the error "in use."

    Thanks for any advice.

    Tracked down the problem finally.

It was caused by a CD/DVD being mounted from the data store ISO on table-1 for these affected virtual machines. changing the setting to CD device Client rather than Datastore ISO for each referenced virtual fixed the problem computer, followed by a 'vmhba33 d esxcfg-rescan"since the ESXi console.

  • How to add a LUN VMFS format without formatting? in vSphere 5.1

Hi people, we need to mount a store of data that was previously seconded.

Is it supposed to be an option called: EnableResignature or > DisallowSnapshotLun but is not present in vSphere 5.1.

Can someone has a workaround for this? We just need to set up a data store without formatting!

We use vSphere 5.1 Ent.Plus Lic.

    Help, please!

    Concerning

You can always re - mount an individual to a host data store if he is always aware that the data store was just disassembled.

Options EnableResignature or DisallowSnapshotLun is relevant only if you present a new LUN with the VMFS volume to a host that already has a volume mounted by the same UUID of VMFS (for example a volume snapshot of SAN-side).

Since few releases ESXi, you don't even have to set the options manually beforehand. It comes when you add the data store in the vSphere Client will ask you what to do, whether it is the will of the volume. Will simply means just assign another name VMFS UUID and the data store, that's all.

He does not reformat the LUN. So that you can move forward, then up the LUN.

  • How can I format / erase a partition vmfs on the HARD drive for later use by windows?

    Hi all

I have a HARD drive to a virtual host formatted as a vmfs partition. I need to delete / erase this HARD drive vmfs partition because it will now be used in a Windows environment. Can someone explain please how can I remove vmfs partition so that it can be formatted in NTFS? Can be done in a Windows operating system like the current place of residence may have one easily accessible Linux or vmware?

    Thank you.

    vmTrekker

Windows should be able to reformat a VMFS partition in the GUI. If this isn't the case, you can run the diskpart utility and erase the partition table on the disk.

  • Upgrade VMFS

    Hello

We are running vSphere 4 and intend to upgrade to version 4.1. I understand that vSphere 4 use VMFS 3.33 and vSphere 4.1 VMFS is v3.46.

May I know if we're going to do a upgrade on the spot, meaning of 4.0 to 4.1 upgrade using the same material, will be the VMFS will also automatically promoted to the latest version?

    Thank you.

It is not possible to update an existing to a later version VMFS file system. reformatting of the data store is required. However, all versions of VMFS 3 fully supported VMware ESX 3.0 and later.

Otherwise said, VMware ESX 3.0 can store and access files on a VMFS created by VMware ESX 4.1 v3.33 data store and the same host VMware ESX 4.1 also can store and access files on VMFS 3.21 volumes created by a host VMware ESX 3.0.

  • 1.8 to VMFS watch block size of 1 MB - WTF?

We have a box 4.0 on which we have created multiple VMFS, each about 1.8 TB volumes.

All three volumes appear and we have been using them, but today we came to increase the size of a VMDK and found that he maxed out at 256 GB.

By looking at the properties of VMFS volume, all three show that 1.8 to, or one of them (one is this VMDK) shows a block size of 1 MB.

By definition, if I understand correctly, you cannot have a 1.8 to VMFS with block size of 1 MB, so what is the best way to combat this?

The server is a stand-alone, so it is not shared storage, nor is the server connected to a vCenter server.

    Thanks in advance.

Block size does not affect the size of VMFS, it only affects the maximum size of the single VMDK file. So, it is perfectly valid to have datastore VMFS 1.8 to with 1 MB block.

You must evacuate all virtual machines that store of data and reformat the drive with the largest block, I'm sorry, but it's your only option.

  • Block size is too small - reformat the data store or create files VMDk 2?

    Hello

I'm new to VMware and so far I absolutely love everything about her!  Well, I was not too happy when I realized that I can't create more than 256 GB a drive without reformatting the VMFS datastore.   Apparently, I accepted the block size of 1 MB by default during the installation...   I now need to configure a file server with about 500 GB of storage.  The data store with a larger block size (4 MB would be fine for me) reformatting is easy enough?  I am currently working on the first host ESXi 4.1 and will move to set up 2 more hosts in the coming weeks.  I read somewhere on the forum that ESXi 4.0 doesn't let you change the block size by default of 1 MB - is this true or relevant to 4.1?

Currently, I have only 2 small VMs on that host, and these can be easily saved and put offline for a few hours, if necessary.  When starting the server, I created a single RAID array that holds ESXi and all virtual machines - does that mean that I have to reinstall ESXi in order to increase the size of the block?

An alternative that I can get to is to simply create 2 255 GB VMDK each and load distribution of storage in the guest operating system (Win 2008).   Performance wise, is a disc more great and better (or worse) than the two smaller disks?

On a related note, what should I choose for the "Independent" option when you add a new virtual disk?  Default is disabled (not independent).

Your thoughts, focus and expertise are welcome and will be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance,

    Dothan

    Dothan,

You should power (after the virtual machine backup) remove the current data store and create a new one with the new block size. I did not have this on ESXi 4.1 again, however, he worked on ESXi 4.0.

The maximum size of VMDK. If you want ot be able to take pictures, make sure you subtract twice the size of block in GB of the documented maximum size.

    Block size 1 MB--> 254 GB (= 256 GB, 2 GB)

    Block size of 2 MB--> 508 GB (= 512 GB - 4 GB)

    Size of block 4 MB--> GB 1 016 (= 1 024 GB - 8 GB)

    Block size of 8 MB--> GB 2 032 (= 2 048 GB to 16 GB)

  • Access to VMFS existing via iSCSI storage

    Hi all

In a test environment, I'm trying to access a VMFS existing via iSCSI data store.

In the storage adapters, I clicked on Rescan. The SCSI target is displayed correctly. However, it is not in the storage, even after clicking on refresh.

If I click on add storage and select disk/LUN, I can see the storage device, clicking on watch then the primary Partition as VMFS. Of course if I click Next again this reformatted it as a new data store, something I don't want to do.

How can I get this existing VMFS volume is displayed in the storage?

Have you tried to define enableresignature on 1 in the advanced settings (see attached) and then a new analysis.

  • promotion of iSCSI LUN with the VMFS data store

    Hello

I moved an iSCSI on the website of DR SAN and fact volume so that it was accessible to the ESX host on the site of DR based on the IP address and made the new analysis of the adapter for iSCSI Software in the VI Client on the two hosts on the DR site and he discovered the LUN.

I don't want to go to the Configuration, storage and add storage as this reformatted the volume and it has a VMware Server already on it running happily on the main site.

How can I add the volume as a VMFS data store available on the two hosts as he is picked up automatically?

    Thank you

    Paul

I guess it was a VMFS volume that was used by the ESX environment on main site you, Yes? If you have moved the LUN, i.e. the ESX hosts in the main site no longer have access so that the ESX host at the DR site do not have access, you will need to define EnableResignature = 1 under Advanced settings, LVM

You restart the analysis for storage and you should access your VMFS volume. You will need to register your virtual machines with the new host.

When complete set EnableResignature = 0

  • Can I reformat an external hard drive volume?

I partitioned a LaCie Rugged Mini 4 TB drive in two volumes, a Mac and a MS-DOS (FAT32). The Mac volume of valuable files on it now and I won't delete it. I realized that I don't have a PC compatible volume so I want to reformat the FAT32 volume in Mac format (or remove the partition) without erasing the files on the volume in Mac format. The FAT32 volume is completely empty. Can I reformat the FAT32 volume only without affecting the Mac volume?

I know you want to unshare. This will make available for your use FAT32 partition. But to format the hard drive (HD), you may have to transfer your files somewhere else and then copy them to your hard drive when formatting is concluded.
