VMotion, HA, DRS and VCB

Hello all - I've been this vCenter 4 can manage esx3.5 and esx4 under the same farm.  question - vmotion, Ha, DRS, VCB funtional yet betwenn two different version of the ESX host?

  • Should we the DRS and VMotion for tolerance fault? Small cluster host 3

    Hello

I'm slightly confused on some information coming from two different directions. We are in the stages of buying a package of Vsphere Essentials Plus and intend to build a 3 host with shared storage cluster. VSphere essentials plus the package comes with HA which, from my understanding, fail over automatically and restart the virtual machine on the available server. In case of server failure Vmotion or DRS provides something more than HA.

We are told that VMOTION & DRS moves virtual machine of FAILURE to an available server without restarting the virtual machine. I don't know how that's possible, but I wanted to check first with the community.

VSPHERE 4 ESSENTIALS PLUS seems ideal for small host deployments 3 @ $2 600 however, that same lic. for the regular VSPHERE enterprise is $2 800 per CPU that @ 6CPUS is more than $17 K.  Then why should we spend $17 K for business verus a $2 600 essentials more lic for such a small deployment?

    Thank you

Yes, this is a new feature. http://www.VMware.com/products/fault-tolerance/

It may work on the existing links, but it is recommended to have dedicated interface for FT.

  • VMware DRS and VMware HA

I'm allowed to use VMware DRS and HA but I'm not familiar with what exactly they can do for me and how they might relate to Vmotion.  I turned on my 2 hosts of vmotion, but I guess my virtual machines do not automatically move from one host to another one grave host fails, until it is completely configured.   Could someone give me a quick description and point me in the right direction on how I can use?

I have licenses for the company for the full suite of vsphere.

    DRS - distributed Service Resouces

This process will recommend to move a virtual machine for performance reasons.  This can be set to automatically move virtual machine.  We have defined it this way and it works very well.  VM move on their own see and at night.

    HA - high availability

If a host goes down, this service starts the VM who have been on this subject, to another host automatically.  The virtual machine will be turned off unexpectedly well.

    FT - fault tolerance

This feature is introduced in ESX4 and keep a copy running on another host.  If the primary host fails, the other takes over with no downtime.  It is currently limited to VM with one vCPU however.

DRS and HA are configured in the properties of a Cluster.  If you do not have a cluster, right-click on a datacenter in VC and create a cluster.  Move the hosts in the cluster.  Drag and drop works fine.  Right-click on the cluster, and then select both.  Once activated, you can configure the DRS and HA.

  • DRS and Resource Allocation

    Hi all

When to use the DRS and what should resource allocation. Because I have the impression that this has 2 contradicted each other. DRS allows VMs to use resources of other physical hosts right? And allocation of resources defines how a group must use the right?

Welcome to the forums - they are not at all contradictory - don't forget the DRS is desigined to ensure that virtual machines get CPU/memory resources they need. It does this by monitoring the consumption of resources on each host in the cluster and what host can provide these resources. Since a virtual machine can use resources form one host at a time, if another host has several DRS resources will be vmotion as VM to TI.

Now, if you define resource assignments to the DRS VM will use these to determine what host will be better satisfy these constraints and requirements - and when the value of resources at a pool level that the elimination of cluster resources - you are really used to divide the resources in a DRS cluster to different groups - the best example this splitting resources between development/test and production so that the Test/Dev do not monopolize depriving them of resources production of virtual machines.

  • Change the PowerCLI Script to use the DRS and DRS storage

    Hello

I have a PowerCLI script that specifies a host and a data store to create a new virtual machine, which has served us well. Now we have activated the DRS and DRS storage and I wonder what to change in order to take advantage of these features. Are there commands to specify a cluster and the cluster data store and let the DRS to decide the initial investment for a new virtual machine? At the moment we put all hosts and the warehouses of data as variables and use them in the line below.

    Thank you.

    $newVM = New-VM-name $NewVMname - VM $TemplateName Datastore - $datastore - VMHost $vHost - confirm: $false - location $myName

    You set a Datastorecluster?

If Yes, then you can replace the value of parameter data with the datastorecluster object store.

Replacing a VMHost with a cluster is not taken in charge I'm afraid.

But you can use something like this

    New-VM-name TestVM Datastore - DSC - ResourcePool (Get-Cluster-name mycluster |) Get - Resourcepool - name of resources)

This will automatically select the VMHost.

The virtual machine appears in the root of the cluster.

DSC is the name of a datastorecluster in the cluster mycluster

  • VCenter and VCB

    Hello

I would like to know, if possible install Vcenter and VCB on the same Windows Server or it is not recommended?

    Thank you

vCenter and VCB share some components, so it is not recommended.  If you have only one physical machine, I would be set up with VCB and using VC in a virtual machine.  You can run VCB in a virtual machine as well, but then you don't get the san connectivity you get when VCB is physical.  Only method NBD (copy of disk based network) works with vcb in a virtual machine.

  • New groups of DRS and rules, would avoid vMotion Storm

DRS groups and rules below look good to present our cluster that has never had one?

Our current cluster of business (20 hosts running ESXi 5.5U2) does not have rules of DRS in place.  I'd like to introduce five new nodes in this cluster, but I don't want (fully automated) DRS to move our critical production VMs to these five nodes until they are sufficiently burned in.  We want only our critical VMs not filing migrate to these new nodes for the moment.

    DRS Group Manager

    1. Create two 'DRS Host groups':
      1. the VM guests
      2. new guest VM
    2. Create two 'DRS VM groups':
      1. production critical VMs
      2. VMs critics off-production

Here are the screenshots of the DRS rules that I've not enabled yet.  DRS will attempt to overhaul all of the critical production VMs (1000 VMs) on these existing hosts or will he see that they already exist on these hosts and left alone?  It will be graciously vMotion 100 critical VMs off-production for the new guests I bring in this cluster?  I would like to avoid creating chaos by making the production of 1000 reviews VMs dragging around the existing VM guests.

    drs_rule1.pngdrs_rule2.png

With these two rules configured as 'must' of the rules, and all virtual machines running on the 'existing VM hosts', I expect that DRS will start the migration of the 'non-production critical VMs' as soon as rules are enabled. What do I usually when DRS rules configuration is to temporarily put the DRS on "Manual", set / add the rules and then go to the DRS tab see small jets DRS recommend after pressing the button "execute DRS. If the recommendations of the DRS me correspond to the expectations, I then the DRS automatic value again and let her work with DRS.

  • vSphere and VCB / license not available

We went from Standard Edition VI3 to vSphere 4 Standard + Storage VMotion. Since then, the 1.5 VCB backup fails.

I saw this message in the tasks of the vSphere client window:

Task name: reconfigure the virtual machine

Status: License not available for this operation

When I click on the 'Détails' link I got the message that you can see on the screenshot.

During execution of the backup VCB some messages "Reconfigure virtual computer" appear and are successful.

We use VCB mode "hotadd" and both VCB (user and proxy) have all the rights in vCenter (for testing).

This license (add hot VM?) or what else I miss? Like VMware hot add doesn't not part of vSphere standard, does this mean that our VI3 VCB Standard license went?

No, I doubt that there is no difference in behavior between virtual and physical proxies. If your backups are working, I think that they are returning to the NDB mode rather than using hot add. If they do not work, set the type of transport to the next during business day that we are working on solving the problem.

The question that we know currently has to do with VMware Data Recovery - this product uses the vcbAPI. However, the license error is the same.

I don't know if there is a fix for VCB 1.5 in the works, so I would recommend that you produce the SR, then we can follow it.

  • Configuration of the DRS and CVS!

    Hi all

    I have 2 IBM (M4 Systemx3650 IBM, Intel® Xeon® CPU E5 - 2620 V2 2.10 GHz, 12 processors * 2,099 GHz) hosts.

one DELL number (PowerEdgeR730, Intel® Xeon® CPU E5 - 2630 V3 @ 2.40 GHz, 16 processors * 2,399 GHz) host with much more kit license vmWARE. configured in a single cluster and all ARMY 3 are under the same group.

Problem 1: attempt to activation of DRS, get error because I'm not allowed to activate DRS for license and DELL host must be updated to the same.

"Problem 2: attempt to activate CVSIntel® Ivy Bridge ' generation is not tenable for host DELL and Intel®"Haswell"generation is not tenable to accumulated both IBM hosts.

If someone could suggest an easy way to overcome it / what step should I take to solve it.

So now the problem is simple, since you do not have a problem of compatibility really :-) Since vCenter VM is started in one of the hosts, you must perform this procedure: VMware KB: VCA allowing on a cluster when vCenter Server is running in a virtual machine

The VCA level for the new cluster must be Ivy Bridge.

New features in each generation of processor. However in order to migrate live virtual computer, the CPU characteristics presented to the virtual machine must be equal on the source and target host does not cause problems (such as BSOD). The different EVC baselines hide or reveal certain CPU features to the virtual machines that are common for all processors in the cluster. Table 1.1 in the article you mentioned some of these CPU features.

  • vMotion between Intel and AMD

    Hi all

I have read many sites mentioned my question but I'm a little confused, so I want to ask here if someone can help me.

I have a test lab with a ML350 G6 (with qnap 439 pro II iscsi), now I have another server and I want to do a few tests/Labs. But the problem is that the new server is a microserver HP with AMD processor. With HA activated when I try to vMotion virtual machine, I get errors on the incompatibility of the CPU. So, how to get around the CPUiD mask? I tried with the maskering official vmware KB the RDTSCP and CMPXCH16B, but it does not work.

Is there anyone who has had the same problem? Or should I only use a cold migration?

A big thank you to all and have a nice day

    Luke

In fact, I know that I must or "must" use cold migration.

    Hello

You use cold migration :-) no reverse

But there is also an official KB of vwmare http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1993 saying and explaining how to hide and mask id CPU of derivation.

As has been said in the previous answer, you have to have a CPU with the same provider, regardless of if you want to create the CVS base or masking of CPU by VM

  • Groups of DRS and HA

    Hi guys,.

I need to refresh my mind.

I need to create rules of the DRS to keep the virtual machines running on a specific hosts bunch, and that's fine.

What about the HA? the DRS procedure rules will be kept in the case of a virtual machine will reboot due to HA?

I remember that reboot because HA DRS rules are always checked before placing a virtual computer on a specific host, but I need to have this confirmed.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Daniele

    Hi Daniele,

I wrote a few articles on this topic, you can check:

    http://frankdenneman.nl/2012/02/SDRS-anti-affinity-rule-types-and-HA-interoperability/

    http://frankdenneman.nl/2010/12/VM-host-affinity-rules-should-or-must/

In short, HA is aware of the required rules, (designated with Must (not) run away). HA does not know if the rules.

And after the failover, the first time DRS HA is called (within 5 minutes) DRS violation of rules will correct them before the imbalance of the renderfarm.

    Kind regards

    Frank
