vMotion between Intel and AMD

Hi all

I have read many sites mentioned my question but I'm a little confused, so I want to ask here if someone can help me.

I have a test lab with a ML350 G6 (with qnap 439 pro II iscsi), now I have another server and I want to do a few tests/Labs. But the problem is that the new server is a microserver HP with AMD processor. With HA activated when I try to vMotion virtual machine, I get errors on the incompatibility of the CPU. So, how to get around the CPUiD mask? I tried with the maskering official vmware KB the RDTSCP and CMPXCH16B, but it does not work.

Is there anyone who has had the same problem? Or should I only use a cold migration?

A big thank you to all and have a nice day

Luke

In fact, I know that I must or "must" use cold migration.

Hello

You use cold migration :-) no reverse

But there is also an official KB of vwmare http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1993 saying and explaining how to hide and mask id CPU of derivation.

As has been said in the previous answer, you have to have a CPU with the same provider, regardless of if you want to create the CVS base or masking of CPU by VM

  • 100 + VMs between Intel and AMD mobile

    And here I thought it was easy.

    Objective:

    1. (1) move 100 + virtual machines from one Cluster to another

    2. (2) change the network uses the prompt

    3. (3) move must be quick

    Prerequisites:

    1. (1) what former LUN Cluster are visible new Cluster

    2. (2) appropriate VLAN is available

    3. (3) ensure that tools are running

    VMotion is not an option, a stop and start is required.  I implemented the simple script according to the comments of the judgment; expect that the machine is not running and do a Move-VM and Start-VM.

    Script:

    $vms = Import-CSVC:\Scripts\PowerCLI\CSmoveInput.csv

    {foreach ($vm to $vms)

    $VMdestination = Get-VMHost $vm.tVMhost

    $Network = $vm.tVLAN

    Get-VM -Name $vm.name | Get-NetworkAdapter | Network card set -StartConnected: $true -confirm: NetworkName - $Network $false

    Shutdown-VMGuest VM - $vm.name -confirm: $false

    While (Get-VMGuest $vm.name |) {$_. State - eq "Running"})

    {

    echo "The machine is still underway"

    Sleep -Seconds 3

    }

    Write-Host $vm.name is disabled

    Move-VM VM - $vm.name -Destination$VMdestination

    Start-VM VM - $vm.name

    }

    Most of the time it works fine, but too often, I get "the operation is not allowed in the current state."

    Is there a better way to ensure that the virtual machine is turned OFF?

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Robert

    You can try the While loop like this

    $vms = Import-CSVC:\Scripts\PowerCLI\CSmoveInput.csv

    foreach ($vm in $vms){

          $VMdestination = Get-VMHost $vm.tVMhost

          $Network = $vm.tVLAN

          Get-VM -Name $vm.name | Get-NetworkAdapter | Set-NetworkAdapter -StartConnected:$true -Confirm:$false -NetworkName $Network
          Shutdown-VMGuest -VM $vm.name -Confirm:$false
          while ((Get-VM $vm.name).PowerState -ne "PoweredOff")

                {

                echo "Machine is Still Running"
                Sleep -Seconds 3
                }

          Write-Host $vm.name is off
          Move-VM -vm $vm.name -Destination$VMdestination
          Start-VM -vm $vm.name

    }

    State property returned by the Get-VMGuest cmdlet returns the status of the VMware tools on the guest.

However in order to migrate live virtual computer, the CPU characteristics presented to the virtual machine must be equal on the source and target host does not cause problems (such as BSOD). The different EVC baselines hide or reveal certain CPU features to the virtual machines that are common for all processors in the cluster. • Enhanced VMotion between Intel processor models

    Slowly, we have extended our VM environment over the past two years. However, we do want to make a major leap of older models of Intel processors for the newer models. Therefore, we would like enable VMotion improved on our ESX host.

    I read in the KB Article #1003212, which was quite useful. However, I guess I'm a little unclear about what if our old processors will be able to VMotion between some of the latest processors from Intel.

    Currently, we use the Intel 5100 Series (Woodcrest) (part of the family of Merom) processors. Based on the maps in the Article, we can vMotion between 7300 (Tigerton) or 5500 (Nehalem)?

    For what it's worth, we are running ESX 3.5 u4. However, we have all intentions on the upgrade to vSphere in the future near semi.

    Thanks for reading this question and I appreciate all the answers!

    ~ Bill

    VCA is the solution and could be the use of the latest versions of ESX 3.5.

    You must enable at the cluster level, in an empty cluster.

  • vMotion between versions and licenses

    I have a question about vMotion in vSphere 4.1.  It is primarily on licenses, as I know technically what I'm asking, it's doable.

    With the inclusion of vMotion in Standard licenses, can run a mixed environment (eg. Enterprise and Standard licenses) and vMotion between hosts with different licenses?

    For simplicity, assume that the environment is running 4.1.  Although if you know, could you please indicate if it would work between versions (eg. between 3.5 and 4.1 or 4.0 and 4.1).

    Thank you.

    The answer you are looking for is + 5.23.2

    Yes.  As long as you have licenses vMotion on all host ESX (i), and you meet the requirements of vMotion (shared storage, CPU compatibility, network, etc.) whereas there should be no problem.  Remember that if a mixed environment of VI3 and vSphere4 hosting, do not upgrade the comment tools.

  • A clustrer function of Intel and AMD mixed server ESXi does

    I have a HP DL380p G8 which has 2 intel xeon CPUs (8 cores) and another HP DL385 G7 server with 1 CPU AMD Opteron 6134 (8 cores). Not now take place ESXi. We plan virtualization. Based on the VMware compatibility guide, two of these servers are ESXi 5.x supported. Although he said that the DL385 G7 needs 2 CPUs. Is this correct?

    We do not have a lot of servers and according to virtualize, three ESXi servers be enough. Can I get an another DL380p of the G8 and have a cluster of two servers Intel ESXi based and a base of AMD server or all three servers should I run the same processor/vendor?

    Thank you.

    A.

    Cluster of features such as vMotion (live migration) require processors from the same provider, supporting a common mode of EVC.

    Where did you read that the AMD need hosts two processors? Currently I'm not aware of such a requirement.

  • Thoughts on vmotion between Intel processors. Success?

    We currently have a cluster with processors Intel X 5540. I think to add a few servers with the new X 5650 processors. Has anyone tried for vmotion on these processors? According to vmware, the process is expermential and I need to apply the mask to the SSA to do. Just curious to know if anyone has had any success in the real world, before I have to buy new servers.

    Actually, my bad. Turn on I don't installed U1 on my server vCenter, so it wasn't able to recognize the CPU as a VCA couldn't. As soon as I upgraded vCenter to the latest version, all came good. VCA is now working with happiness between a X 5650 and two E5345s.

  • Satellite L50-B-23f - switching between Intel and ATI GPU

    Hello

    Bought this laptop a week ago and I must say that I am very happy with it, but I would change the graphical display of 5500 to Intel(r) HD Graphics integrated with that of the AMD Radeon R7 M260.

    I brought by the device manager that makes two graphics cards are enabled and working properly. I also watched the AMD Catalyst Control Center, but I still can't understand how to accomplish the transition to AMD graphics display.

    I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction in order to complete the process of switching.

    Thank you very much

    Jack Straw

    Hello

    The GPU from Intel is a part of the CPU and will be used to secure the power.
    It will be used in case the graphics software requirements are low.

    Of course it can be changed manually.
    You can assign the application that needs to use the ATI GPU.

    To switch to the external GPU, right click on the desktop
    In Catalyst Control Center Power, click on select Maximum Performance when it is plugged

    Then in global settings of Switchable Graphics also choose maximize Performance

    Then click on the switchable graphics Application settings
    Now, you would be able to add an app (game) that could use this graphics card settings
    Simply tap the exe of the game and add to the list of applications.
    After that, you will see the exe file in the list. Click the graphics settings and set it to high performance.

    But beware: best performance GPU produces more heat, which leads to a higher internal temperature.

  • Intel and AMD CPU processor in the same Cluster vCenter

    Okay, guys and girls, doing vCenter/ESX 4.x cluster support a joint brain of AMD and Intel CPU?

    I have succeeded in their own groups so many individual servers but never asked on the mixture of AMD and Intel servers in a Cluster of ESX.

    I'm sure that's not possible or supported, but I have to ask anyway. Send a link to support your statement.

    Thank you

    N °
    A VCA active cluster only allows processors to a single supplier in the
    cluster. VirtualCenter and vCenter Server you do not add a host
    another provider in a cluster enabled EVC.

  • vMotion between different processors

    On my last job, I had two clusters vmware, using four hosts with HP DL580 servers and the other with two hosts in a HP BLADE system, I don't remember the model.

    So when I tried to move an active VM for clusters to each other, I got an error, so I'm looking here on community and I got the awnser is the reason the hosts had different processors and I can only move this virtual machine, if they are closed. If I can only move cold VM between my cluster.

    OK im on a new company name and they had M$ Hyper-V and now we are migrating to VMWARE (cool ) we have two DELL Poweredge servers, one with two Quad-Core Xeon X 5470 and the other with two Xeon Quad - Core E5320.

    So I guess I'm having a problem of fact a vmotion hot between it because the servers have different processors.

    So im buying new processors, but I find only Xeon Quad-Core X 5365, I think that it corresponds to that of the X 5470 but with cache and diferrent clock.

    My ask is, can I do a hot Vmotion with some VM of a Xeon X 5470 server on a Xeon X 5365 server.

    Stability of Slackware, safety and simplicity are the best choice!

    Yes,

    the vmotion VMs between different generations of cpu is only posible to put these hosts using Enhanced VMotion (CVS).

    Improved compatibility for VMotion (EVC) simplifies VMotion compatibility issues

    through the generations of CPU. EVC automatically configures the server with Intel CPU

    FlexMigration or AMD - V extended Migration technologies

    compatible with the old servers. After EVC is enabled for a cluster in the

    VirtualCenter inventory, all hosts in this cluster are configured to

    present identical CPU features and compatibility for VMotion CPU. The

    features introduced by each host are determined by selecting a predefined EVC

    base line. VirtualCenter does not allow the addition of hosts that cannot be

    automatically configured to be compatible with EVC baseline.

    To use CVS, you must run ESX Server 3.5 Update 2 or

    highest with Virtual Center 2.5 Update 2 or higher and have only compatible CPUs

    are listed in one of the following tables.

    CVS does not allow for migration with VMotion between Intel and AMD processors.*

    VCA makes it much

    easier to add servers with the new generation of processors in existing clusters

    containing a material more former generation. Entering an EVC cluster servers are

    automatically configured to be compatible with the hosts already in the

    clusters. Since this process is automatic, EVC is very simple to use and

    requires no expertise on CPU features and masks.

    What are the differences between RT and Win 8 Pro?

    Windows 8 - this runs on processors traditional x 86 - x 64 for Intel and AMD, and the same apps that runs on Windows 7, Vista, and Windows XP.

    Windows RT - built on the same basis as Windows 8, it works on a different processor called ARM and not running programs in Windows 7, Vista, or Windows XP. In addition, it comes with Microsoft Office 2013 while Windows 8 does not work. It only comes on the new devices, in contrast to Windows 8 you can buy a license for an existing computer.

    Hello

    The Intel graphics chip, which is part of the central unit should be used for low performance applications, because it allows you to save energy and reduce the internal temperature.

    For best performance while game, it s advisable to use the external GPU (nVidia or AMD)
    This setting can be changed in the nVidia control panel s

    Here, you should choose manage them 3D settings (can be found on the left in the nVidia control panel)

    Now in the main window, you will find two global settings and program parameters tabs
    In the program settings tab, select the (game) program that needs to use the nVIdia GPU

    If it is not listed, click the Add button
    Then choose the graphic processor preferred for this program (generally must be nVidia processor high performance)

    Last but no less, in this program-specific settings, you can assign additional features to improve performance.
