vMotion Question

Recently, I noticed that vMotion and DRS seem to be a bit slow.  I know it's vague, but here's what I see:

1. in the list of tasks in vSphere client, vMotions put on hold for a significant amount of time to 78% and 100%

2. the real vMotion from one virtual computer to another physical host seems to go pretty quickly.

3. no errors in the vmkernel connect when fast vMotioning.

4. no errors reported in the vSphere client

5. the time to a host with 22 VMs on it in maintenance mode this morning was about 55 minutes

Obviously environment factors in vMotion significantly.  However, the break at 78% and 100% is somewhat relative.  Someone at - he saw the symptoms like this before?

Our environment is as follows:

vSphere 4.1

Storage EMC Clariion system

244 VMs

2 groups (3 hosts in cluster #1, 5 hosts in cluster #2).

Gigabit network links

Any insight or points of resolution of potential problems are greatly appreciated.

The f

Pauses are normal at these points (and 20%, 2%, 98%).

Reports % how is done is not 'linear' - there are specific steps being reach 78% and 100%, for example, that take more time than the other parties.  Is the cleaning of the break at 100%, for example, the files from the old host (I think), and 78% is the break for the final stage of precopy.

  • ESXi 4.1 for ESXi 5.1 vMotion Question

I have a customer who has two servers esx esx 4.0 is and the other is 4.1. Esx 4.0 is an IBM System x 3650 m2 with an Intel Xeon E5530. Esxi 4.1 is a HP Proliant DL360 G6 with an Intel Xeon E5506.

My question is esxi 5.1 does support vmotion and if yes - that will work with these processors being different?

Please let me know if you need additional information.

    Thank you

I would like to add that you can certainly configure vMotion between these 2 servers (license to of course), but you may need to activate CVS while they are a bit different revisions.

EVC is configured in the properties of the cluster. You'll want to take the most compatible version on both hosts. To enable it, you may need to turn off some guests on the most recent processor box.

  • Multi-NIC vMotion question

    BACKGROUND

I'll put up a new environment vSphere 5 with a couple of hosts ESXi 5 to test how things work in this latest version.

I use HP DL385 G7 servers that have 4 integrated network cards and I have a quad-port NIC card server that I will implement etherchannel to serve my VM networks. I intend to use the 4 port NIC integrated for vMotion and my Console of service (management).

    CONFIGURATION

For the vMotion and the Console, I built a unique standard vSwitch on each host and created 4 physical Ports VMKernel linked to my 4 network interface cards. 3 network cards are configured for vMotion with StandBy is defined as the vMotion other network cards. The 4th NIC is configured for management ensures only being 3 NICS of vMotion.  I use VLAN separate NIC of the Console and the vMotion NIC.

My hosts are in an active cluster with DRS.

All this seems to work well.

    TEST

I have a couple of VM located on this cluster (2 hosts), so I use Putty SSH in one of my hosts. I run ESXTOP and press N to view the network settings. Here, things seem normal.

I take a VM and vMotion he host that I followed. I was all traffic met on a single vMotion NIC instead of my 3 cards of vMotion.  This was not planned.  NOTE that this is the VM being vMotioned to my monitored host.

When I vMotion a VM on the host that I followed, all 3 cards network vMotion ignite and is used. This was as expected.

    SUMMARY

Several cards using vMotion network seems to work only when you migrate a computer that host virtual. The host on which the virtual computer is being migrated, yet receives just the virtual machine on the one primary NIC.

I have a call in VMware and they are studying if this is normal or if there is a problem.

  • Storage vMotion Question

    Hello all,.

I'm faily new to vSphere, so I'm still working on the kinks, so to speak, but I discovered something this morning. I have vMotioned storage one powered off the coast of the virtual machine to a data to another store. That VM has hard drives stored on several data stores. When I did the vMotion, it all of these vmdk moved to the new data store. In this case, it was intended, but I see a few examples where I I want that to happen. I went back through vMotion diaglog boxes and could not find anything to this. Is there a way to control this and I missed it? Or is the answer to simply move to the new data store, and then replace the desired vmdk their storage?

    Thank you

    Mike

    Hello.

You can use the advanced options in the wizard to control where each VMDK file will be placed.

    Good luck!

  • VMotion Question and Exchange CCR nodes

If I have 2 CCR Exchange in the same cluster nodes in the same Cluster, ESX, I don't think that the rules of cluster MSCS apply because they do not have a subsystem of disks shared such as MSCS. That is why I do not treat a CCR cluster as an MSCS cluster. Why I said that a CCR cluster cannot be VMotioned?

It has become a major issue, but I've done several times before without any problem.

If sharing is done through the o/s of the VM rather by sharing virtual material you should be able to vmotion-

  • question of vMotion and storage vMotion

I have everything set, UCS 5108, ESXi host, VMs, I don't have a SAN connection yet... My question is if I can enable vMotion? Let's say I have a cluster in vCenter, within this group, I have attached two ESXi host, win2008 VM in an ESXi and running, I can migrate (using vMotion) as win2008 VM to an another ESXi without connection SAN?

How storage vMotion to an ESXi host hardrive to an another ESXi host hardrive? Is this possible?

Note: I have not connection SAN in this configuration

One of the requirements for vMotion is shared storage that would allow visibility between source and destination ESXi hosts. (SAN, iSCSI or NFS).

  • Question of Storage vMotion

    Hi all

Newbie VMware admin here, I hope it's an easy question. I have several boxes of Microsoft SQL I need to move the drive on which the operating system is installed on, they have all RDM attached when I try a storage vmotion, it looks like her wanting to move all the drives instead of one, i have never attempted to move a system with RDM attached to it, but I need to get away from this former storage we have urged. All tips are appreciated thank you!

You can migrate both at the same time, even if you choose a different destination.

  • Question about the collection of NETWORK adapters for vMotion / VM vSwitch

    Hello

We use vSphere Enterprise Edition 5.1.

We also create separate vSwitch for management / vMotion and VM.

Each vSwitch receives 2 network cards connected to the different switch for redundancy.

We would like to know is necessary to provide the collection of NETWORK adapters for these vSwitches?  Currently, only enable us NIC Teaming for VM vSwitch only.

    Thank you

VSwitch vMotion, we have 2 assigned NIC (nic2 and nic6) with 10 VLANS.  NIC2 and nic6 are connected to 2 different physical switches.

    Should I choose

    (1) both are active

    (2) both are assets + grouping of NETWORK cards?

Question - if there is only 1 VLAN, it seems that NIC Teaming is also not very useful unless we use 2 VLAN (Multi-NIC vMotion).  Is this right?

If you use Multi-NIC vMotion, there is no need to have two different VLANS, all you need is depending on configuration

on your vMotion switch, please create two vmkernel port for vMotion with the same VLAN ID, but the grouping of NETWORK cards as below

    vMotion_1 - VLAN ID: 10

    Grouping of NETWORK cards

    vmnic2 - active

    vmnic6 - watch

    vMotion_2 - VLAN ID: 10

    vmnic6 - active

    vmnic2 - watch

  • Question about network vMotion of the Ferguson VCP5 CERT Guide book.

I'm studying for my VCP5-VTC, and I have a question.

On page 154, a book that I read, it says network vMotion is a vDS ability but not vs.

Can someone help me understand what is vMotion network?

If it comes to vCenter linked mode, this means that the network vDSs are migrated between vCenters when the vCenter fails?

I thought that most of the work made by the switch hidden on the CDS of the ESXi server that does not migrate anywhere. ?

Thank you in advance for thinking about my question. I googled 'network vmotion' but most of the responses were in regards to VM vMotion.

  • question of vMotion iSCSI and jumbo frames

    Hello

I have a cluster ESXi 4.1 using vCenter and a SAN MD3200i.  I'll do an upgrade to optimize the installation, which includes the installation of four NIC ports in hosts that will be used for iSCSI.  I struggle to enable frames or not, but if I do, I just want to do for the iSCSI, at least for now.  Currently, the maps iSCSI network on the hosts and the MD3200 iSCSI connections are connected to two switches separated, although I have seven other switches in the building connected to the PC, printers, etc.  What I only turn frames on two switches that iSCSI is connected, or do I have to enable frames on all my switches?  There is a Dell 2724 and eight 6224Ps of Dell.  ISCSI is connected to the 2724 and one from the 6224Ps.

The two switches that are connected to the iSCSI ports are not dedicated iSCSI switches; they have other devices on them, but I can only enable the frames extended globally on the switch.  Would there be any problem allowing the frames extended on the switches, otherwise all connected devices are configured for them?

Another question about vMotion: I will create four ports on each host for iSCSI vmkernel.  Currently, there is also a port configuration vmkernel for traffic management and vMotion.  Is it possible to set up each of the four iSCSI for vMotion vmkernel channels, or should I leave it configured on the port of vmkernel management?

    Thank you!

Sure. If you're going to enable Jumbo frames, you need to have dedicated switches for that, or a switch that may have different units MTU on their ports.

  • Question on isolate the vmotion traffic.

    Hello

I have a question, we try to isolate the vmotion traffic and I have a problem.

    I have two vswitches.

    Vswitch 0

only management option selected, 10.85.85.4, 255.255.254.0 subnet, gateway 10.85.85.1, trunk, VLAN 85 port

    vswitch 1

VMotion selected only, 10.85.80.2, subnet 255.255.255.0, gateway 10.85.80.1, access port, VLAN 80

When I change the default GW on vswitch 1 change the default GW on vswitch 0 also and I lose
connectivity.  I understand that you cannot have two vmkernel of GW, if this is not how to fix this?

    Thank you

    Greg

It is correct as long as vmotion ports are on the same subnet, there will be no need for routing - whther vlan can span the main switch is a matter of idfferent.

    Hi all

I have a strange problem in Cluster DRS / rules of VM, we do vmotion

After doing vmotion, VM addresses don't not ping, in the first time I think it's trunk network was not good.

Do vmotion on the source host and not work.

After checking configuration of the virtual machine, I see that "Connects" network adapter box is not checked.

The box was check before, because the ping response machine before the vmotion.

  • ESX 3.5 Update 5 versus question 4.1 VMotion ESX

    Good afternoon

I hope it's a small question, I'll try to be concise.

Basically I have an instance of Virtual Center 2.5 Enterprise (original version) with two ESX 3.5 knots (original also build... don't read any updated). DRS and HA are enabled.

We started to exceed two knots (about 40 guests between them) and we recently ordered two new servers. Since it is several years since our first installation, we cannot buy the same materials. My understanding is that ESX 3.5 and earlier did not play really well when you introduced different hardware (servers) in a cluster. I've heard say that ESX 3.5 Update 5 (besides being current and taken in charge) remedies this problem. Is this true?

Can I update my current environment ESX 3.5 update 5 and updated to Virtual Center 2.5 update 6 and then introduce some servers intel based more recent (but similar) in the cluster without any problems (ie. Invited VMotion between all ESX 4 nodes).

Upgrade to 4.1 is more than I can swallow in the next few days, as they would result at the end of next week. I guess I can go down the licensing of two new ESX Server (ESX 4.1 licenses have been purchased for these new servers).

    Thank you

    TMR

Am I right to assume that, in this perspective, ESX 3.5 U2 and ESX 4.1 will be will be the same in terms of CPU and EVC baselines (in other words, 4.1 has an advantage here).

Yes, it's a safe assumption.  VCA Mode automatically applies the best option of compatibility possible for you, regardless of the version of ESX.  It is strictly for the CPU compatibility.

  • Wiring of VMotion and VLan question...

    Hello

I understand the VLANS and how they work, but I'm not really a 'network' guy and I have a few questions...

My servers are dl380 g6 with 8 network ports. I intend using two for console service, two for vmotion and the other 4 for my virtual switch of production. I know there is no way of vswitches configuration, but it's my game to date plan.

My question is how can I configure a vlan and segment the traffic for vmotion? I have 4 ports on my physical switch that I put aside for this vlan vmotion. How can I set this up? Wwhat can I do on the switch and how do I have to create a separate subnet in the DNS? ABLES

My plan is to pass the cables from the ports on esx hosts I put aside for vmotion to the physical switch ports...

I'm not too sure about that...

Thank you! points will be awarded to anyone.

    Hello.

My question is how can I configure a vlan and segment the traffic for vmotion? I have 4 ports on my physical switch that I put aside for this vlan vmotion. How can I set this up? Wwhat can I do on the switch and how do I have to create a separate subnet in the DNS? ABLES

What kind of physical switch are you using?  Here is a link to the Cisco documentation to create the VLAN on Catalyst switches.  Create a layer 2 VLAN and create VMkernel interfaces with the appropriate IP addresses.  Don't worry about DNS or Routing and keep things simple, if you can.
