  I usually like VMware / WS... I used VMware / WS for many years with problems little / not serious - until recently.

  I'm under WS 6.5.1 on MS/Windows/XP/Pro/SP2 (host), and 2 guests of virtual machines: RHEL4 and MS/Windows/XP/PRO.

  Recently I bought a SAMSUNG T260 (1920 x 1200) high-resolution screen - I really like (I also used SAMSUNG monitors for many years with little / no serious problems).

  Currently, I am frequently (several times a day) see the two VMware / WS (all guests) and my XP any host COMPLETELY FREEZES up.  The only way out of this is perhaps a shutoff of the system and then restart.

  Needless to say it is (IMHO) a OFF THE CHARTS SERIOUS PROBLEM... with all fingers pointing to VMware / WS (TBD).

  Previously, I was running on a HP low resolution screen 1280 x 1024.  I can run for days/months/still without seeing the problem above.

  Also, I believe many/most/all lower resolution monitors is likely no other problems (be it).

  This is a 'system to freeze the scenario:

  1 pass to MS/Win/XP vm host RHEL (mode full-screen)

  2. press quickly on full screen non-plein screen

  3. If I do the above too fast my entire army system freezes up.

  Any body else see something like that?  Any ideas/help/suggestions will be appreciated.

  PS/BTW - I've seen this problem originally under 6.0.3

  Are you running the latest drivers for your videocard host?  Video drivers are complex enough that they almost always end up containing pretty serious bugs and VMware video cards use is broad enough for us fires frequently these questions.  If upgrading the drivers didn't help not can you let us know:

  -What graphics card and cpu type is your host machine?

  -Don't you update of tools in two virtual machines?

  -What is your workload, particularly in the XP VM?

  -3D acceleration enabled in the XP VM is?

  I'm looking in the configuration of SNMP on our ESX for Solarwinds alert guests, and is the last step I have to restart the service mgmt-vmware.

  I looked around online and have been unable to find confirmation that it will not have all the time with the virtual machines running on those hosts, as production machines.

• Windows 7 hangs on cold start

  New Toshiba Laptop L505-S5990 with Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit, 3 GB of RAM.

  Booting cold (to stop), Windows 7 comes in at Blue welcome screen and then hangs.  No evidence of hard drive activity.  If I shut down (with the power button) and restart, it starts very well.

  Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer and check if you are able to start the computer in the first attempt.

  Also, check if you are able to boot into SafeMode on the first attempt. To start in safe mode follow the steps.

  1. remove all floppy disks, CDs and DVDs from your computer and restart your computer.

  Click the Start button, click the arrow next to the button lock and then click on restart.

  2. do one of the following:

  a. If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then stop and restart your computer.

  b. If your computer has multiple operating systems, use the arrow keys to select the operating system you want to start in safe mode, and then press F8.

  3. in the display Advanced Startup Options, use the arrow keys to select the option of safe mode you want and press ENTER. For more information about the options, see startup options (including safe mode).

  4 log your computer with a user account with administrator rights.

  When your computer is in safe mode, you will see marked Safe Mode in the corners of the screen. To leave safe mode, restart your computer and let Windows start normally.

• 64 bit Vista crashes when the system goes into Sleep Mode. Have cold start. Simultaneous began with the June 8 patches.

  This problem started a week ago, say at the time of the June 8 fix release. I think the relevant in case the log message is 'detected bad event COM + a system code back during internal processing. HRESULT is C 8007043 line 45 of d:\longhorn\com\Complus\src\events\tier1\eventssystemobj.epp. Error report, please contact Ms Product Support Services. "However, when I contacted MS, they would not help without paying the fees because it was an OEM installation. The system remains upward after the stabilization of the system going on in SafeMode after cold start, close and then switch to normal mode.   The cause was not determined, but evidence tends to a disturbance in the download or installation process, with one of the errors in the event log is an error in checksum on one of the modules. With a large file, 745 meg, the mean time to failure on a LAN network is probably shorter than the download time.  The installation process was probably longer than the time that the system has increased...  Corrective actions for Microsoft could include more small download / install, not allowing an automatic installation for automatic download over a certain size, or deal with the best controls during installation to intercept the checksum error.  Duane G. • VMware Tools causes comments hang for more than one minute during the connection

  Hi, I'm under VM Workstation 7.1.0 with Windows XP SP3 as the host and the guest.  When VMWare tools are installed, the guest operating system will hang for 1 to 2 minutes to "loading your personal settings...". "stage.  It seems to be all network activity, but the movies the hard drive on the occasion light.  During the uninstallation of VMware Tools then Windows will connect immediately.

  Check the settings of the virtual machine for the parameters as shared folders and locally connected devices. There may be something set up that needs time to 'connect' or probably time out.

  This had already happened with another server (also W2003 DC), but the hardware was completely different; Unfortunately, I wasn't able to solve this year here.

  I finally found the guilty service.

  It was pcmonitor monitor/remote control software. Once I stopped it is service vmware converter could get the capacity of the physical drives.

  It is rather curious because I made several servers P2V conversions using this software (so far the last one two weeks ago - the difference between that server and this one was that the first was not a domain controller).

  Hopefully this thread will help others in the future.

• System Agent of VMware Converter error

  I want to create an image of my current local PC using the Conversion Wizard.

  I select as the source physical computer.

  Chose this local computer to which I am logged on as administrator.

  Select this option to ignore the page file and the hibernation file.

  For the type of destination, I select another Virtual Machine.

  Location, I select my drive external hard (e :))

  I let expand virtual disk files.

  I leave the default value of network page which is to choose 5 network adapters.  I also tried a single with the same results.

  I select to delete all system restore points.

  In step 2, I get:

  I also tried the most recent generation 7.1.5 with the same results.

  You are using a generic NetBSD kernel?

  so I think that it is similar to the Open and FreeBSD.

  hotclone is the waste of time - it won't work.

  Use Coldclone - or dd the entire disk - write a descriptor for him then and use it as vmdk.

  In the other BSD systems I boot first time in single user mode - as everything else probably does not work.
  Can I fix fstab and etc/rc.conf if necessary

• VMware converter restarts the physical server after cold clone

  This can already city, but I can't find any discussion about it. I do a few P2Vs using the bootable disk to Vmware converter 4.1.0 cold clone. We have not all KVM/IP switches, I visit the server room to check the status of the conversion. The problem I have is that once the converter is completed, it randomly restarts the physical server, I converted (does not seem to happen to any of them). Of course, I don't want the physical server switch on again as changes could be made to it. I don't see any option in the converter to tell him not to restart or even stop that would be ok?

  Has anyone encountered this problem and maybe a solution?

  This is a very dirty hack that will do what you want

  Edit the coldclone.iso and delete the file... \I386\bootfix.bin.

  If you delete this file from the CD will not be asked to "press any key to boot from the CD" - instead, it will always start in the CD.

  So this also means you must change the boot sequence for the physical machine BIOS to boot from the CD-ROM.

  Then - even if the CD Coldclone restarts for unknown reasons - it will never restart under the original system, but raise the CD.

• VMWare converter hangs on RHEL/CentOS 2 and 3 guests

  I tried this on three different hosts and in each case the vmware converter starts ok, then eventually it simply crashes.  I logged on the source host to see what was going on and noticed that it crashes there is no vmware running process, whereas before I was able to see the vmware converter process, but also the tar of the process which has begun.

  Any suggestions?  This product don't feel really as it is completely "cooked", at least on the side of things Linux.

  I really don't understand why rsync would be a faster, unless you were synchronizing after an initial copy.

  I don't know why you have to do all this hack later.  I fear systems that you are having to do this on the 2.4 kernels, which are basically not supported (read as "will not work"), except for explicitly RHEL 2.1, which we specially deal.

  CentOS is generally not supported (read as "not tested, no guarantee it won't work at all, no promises of any assistance, good luck").

  But many people have had success with CentOS, and they have not needed to play with the initrd, grub, etc..  This is a very large part of the value provided by the Linux P2V functionality, so have to do it yourself sucks.  Can you give me the versions accurate that you are having to do with?

  Honestly, if you do all that cold converter Clone CD (available as part of the converter company releases) might be a better approach because it allows to copy disks completely, you will lose any LVM and won't have problems with 'magic' confusion of tar files. But for the record, the cold Clone CD does not support provisioning.
