VMware ESXi on Acer G540 with SATA RAID 1?

Hello

I have an acer altos g540 im trying to install esxxi, it is configured with hard drives 2 x 640 GB in raid 1 (mirror), when I try to install esxi he sees discs 2 x 640 GB. and not 1 as it should. any ideas?

Welcome to the VMware community forums.   With ESX (i) drivers do not support software RAID based like the Intel ICH controllers * R controllers and so you see 2 drives even if the BIOS has a configured RAID 1 array.

  • VMware esxi 4.1 compatibility with ASUS PIKE 2008 interface?

    Hello VM ware Folks,.

Can you let me know if ASUS PIKE 2008 interface card is compatible with vmware esxi 4.1 since I intend to install vmware server.

    Appreciate your help.

    Thank you

    Srikanth.

    Hi Srikanth,

PIKE is an exclusive feature of expansion for ASUS motherboards. These motherboards are found in the HCL, but it seems that ASUS has not put the PIKE in the process of certification as a discreet storage card. ASUS claims nor that it is supported on anything other than Windows and Linux operating systems.

You just have to try it and see, really. I think he's probably going to work perfectly, but it probably is not an adapter of storage supported for VMware ESX or ESXi, if you are having problems.

  • VMware ESXi 4.1 size not see Raid of the table.

After installing ESXi 4.1, I have a little problem with my intel RAID CARD turn a 4 X 1 TB drive in a raid 5 array.

ESXi sees the table and indicates that the capacity is 2.73 TB under storage adapters, but when you look under storage it says there is only 739 GB of capacity as well as the amount of available space. Somone explain what happened to my 2 TB?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jeff Norris

With vSphere Client (free version) maybe that this must be bought to be unlocked?

ESX and ESXi currently have a limit of 2 TB LUN.  Depending on the capabilities of your controller, you can get around this limit by creating several bays on the disk that are less than 2 TB.

  • Install VMware ESXI 5.1: GROUP with no error reported

    Hey everybody,

We are trying to install VMware on a server which seems full fill all the requirements of the material.

We have tried both a CD and a USB key (who both successful install VMware on another server)

    and we had this problem:

A few seconds after that, we started from the Flash DRIVE or the CD, we get a simple screen purple

with absolutely no message and no error reported. Then, if we expect more, we get a black screen with a few

green squares arranged randomly all over the screen.

If someone who had the same problem could help us or if anyone has an idea on how

to get some kind of error there reports, it would be very apreciated!

Thx for your time and your consideration buddies.

Please tell us what the hardware. Also please download and apply the latest firmware available for this material to the web site of the manufacturer. I had the exact same problem with my HP DL360 Gen7 and I applied the last Pack of Proliant HP who has paid the GROUP for me.

  • Driver RAID for Vmware ESXi 5.1 on Dell R420.

The question I have after configuring raid1 in raid utility is created using the, I launch the installation of Vmware ESXi 5.1. What is ESXi 5.1 sees not the raid1 partition but rather see two disks as are they worn can't in raid1 configurations.

I need to have this in raid1 config, can any who share an idea about my problem please or point me in the right direction.

I did some research but nothing seems to help resolve this issue.

    Thank you

    Sheriff.

    Sorry for my previous response:

DELL-Daniel My - when I boot in the BIOS of the controller, I see the raid in a raid1 configuration.

Mgr dev you are right, I did research more when you all answered. I see the PERC S110 pilot was a software raid controller and thus the vmware esxi wouldn't work in a raid configuration 1 (software raid).

  • Slow 3ware SATA RAID 9690

    Here's a strange.

System Specs: ESXi 4.1 with updated oem.tgz for drivers of 3ware, Biostar TA890FXE, AMD Phenom II Black 3.2 ghz, 16 GB RAM, 3ware 9690SA-4i (with battery), Intel 1000GT, boot USB Flash 4 GB disk

I have two data warehouses using the same 1 TB SATA Samsung Spinpoint F3 1 TB disks:
    (A) 3ware 9690 RAID-5, 4 discs, total capacity of 2.73 tb (2 to & Go 730 Lun, images of comments, primary storage)
    (B) SATA AHCI, 2 disks total capacity 1.81 to (2 x 900 ~ to ISO and random storage Lun)

When the copy of the RAID to the standard SATA drives, it is doomed fast. But SATA in RAID, the speed is ridiculously slow. It seems to take easily 10 x as much time or more when copying very large files.

I noticed when I went to copy all my files and images of comments to a data store while I reformatted with a larger block size. Then the copy to roughly 400 GB from A to B, it took less than an hour, perhaps as little as 30 minutes. New B in A, it took 6 hours when I dropped.

In addition, I have a little bit of reference tool called Parkdale who made drive simple comparative analysis in Windows and have some real numbers to go with my comments in ESXi.

    Option A with SATA RAID = 2.6 MB/s write, 73.7 MB/s reading (Win Server 2003)
    Option B with SATA AHCI = 111.1 MB/s write, 108.1 MB/s Read (Win Server 2000)

There is certainly something weird here. Any ideas on how to test, what to look for, or what could be the problem?

You may need to activate the write cache. It wouldn't be activated without the battery. Some controllers to activate the cache because soon the battery is attached and responsible, but not all.

  • ESXi 5.0 U1 could be installed on a SATA drive, but can't the SATA RAID

    This is the case:
My physical server includes the Intel series E5-2600, Intel C600 (A for SATA) chipsets.
In the VMware ESXi 5.0 Update 1 Release Notes, I find his support for chipsets Intel C600 and E5-2600.

So I want to confirm if ESXi 5.0 U1 could be installed in my machine.
In my test, ESXi 5.0 U1 can be installed with a SATA, but not SATA RAID drive. (Installed by CD)
    What's wrong?
    Waiting for your help.
    Thank you!

Another feature that is missing in ESXi is caching block... So if you buy a hardware RAID card choose one with a battery to use the cache policy writing and write I/O faster.

  • Problem with the start of VMware ESXi 5.0

I just installed VMware ESXi 5.0 on a new Cisco UCS B200 series blade with two 300 GB hard drives configured in a RAID 1 mirror.  I went through and completed the installation of VMware ESXi 5.0 on this server.  When the installation is complete and the server restarted, he did not initiate the ESXi where I can change the IP address and VLAN.  Instead, I get this text string after the initial boot sequence that is shown in the attachment.  I have a guest who said Shell > do not know why I can not start correctly in ESXi 5.0.  Thank you!  Paul

    Hi Paul,.

Looks like you boot to the EFI shell. What is the startup policy that you have configured on this server service profile? It should look like the one below.  If there is a problem with the boot order, you should be able to type "EXIT", then enter on the EFI shell to exit the prompt. If your startup is similar to the one below and you still experience this issue, try to downgrade and re - ack the blade.

Let me know if it helps.

  • Why VMWare ESXi 5 slow down access to IBM M1015 / LSI 9240-8i RAID?

I build servers for virtualization and wanted to go with VMWare ESXi 5. I configured RAID10 on 4 discs attached to the IBM M1015 internal RAID controller (similar to LSI 9240-8i) and installed ESXi without any problem. Only problem is that copying data to the data store (on the RAID array) on the host is slow - about 20 MB/s. And I get about the same speed when you try to copy data to a shared folder on the guest virtual machine. The host network is auto-négociée with switch 1000Mbit 1000Full and I used vmxnet3 vm card in the guest computer.

When I install MS Hyper-V on the same exact server with the exact same table RAID10 I get around 110 MB/s speed to copy data to the Hyper-V host.

I used the latest drivers available for each system:

    ESXi 5 - LSI_5_34-455140.zip\scsi-megaraid-sas-5.34-1vmw.500.0.0.406165.x86_64.vib

    Windows - 5.2.112

I have even updated the firmware card 20.10.1 - 0077.

This card is entry level but recommended on different places for ESXi. What I am doing wrong? Am I missing something?

    Thank you

As I mentioned earlier, ESXi does not have caching at the level of the BONE, unlike HyperV.

  • VMware ESXi does not support the RAID on HP Proliant ML110 G5 drives

    Hello

I installed VMware ESXi on my HP Proliant ML110 G5. I got 3 hard drives on my server at the moment, one of them is VMware ESXi and other two are RAID1.
Whenever I connect to my server via vSphere client I have the chance to see every HARD drive (datastore) separately.  Is it possible that VMware does not RAID installation?
I would need to see these two hard drives as a data store. Do you have any ideas on how I can do?
    Thank you.

like any other typical server, you need to configure the sata raid controller RAID5/RAID0. but keep in mind that this controller without any battery backed cache would have very horrible performance. Another way is that you can use datastore span to provide as a large store of data, but if you lose all of the computer, you will lose all data.

  • 2808 LAG for use with VMware ESXi and Linux collage

I posted the month last about setting up my work with groups LAG http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/network-switches/f/866/t/19537080.aspx servers (I'll effectively implementing implement this Saturday)

I decided to buy a 2808 for my ESXi server get more aggregated connections to my staff iSCSI Linux server but now I'm worried I might have made a mistake to buy the 2808.

After looking in the manual before I realized I could have been mistakenly assuming that the 2808 had STP and LACP, as I can't find LACP anywhere in the PDF file. I guess that the configuration of my Linux machine for 802.3ad is out (a hope to make mode 4), so now for the configuration of my house, I wonder (* 1 *) that I have to configure my VMware NIC team like and what mode of binding should I use on my Linux host? As for the section at the top (my working configuration) (* 2 *) I don't know what to do about the road other than the leave as 'route based on originating virtual port ID "? (This is how our other data centers are configured, but I'm waiting for my admin network as agglomerates ESXi hosts are configured with the channels of port on our cisco switches)

For the House, I want to try to increase the bandwidth by using three NICs in each server, I was hoping that it works:
VMware: Route of IP hash function?
    w/Linux: balance-alb?

    -VMware:
    Before you begin:

    -Linux:
    * Descriptions of bonding modes *.
+ Mode 0 balance-rr: Round-robin policy: transmit packets in the sequential order of the first available through the last high school. This mode provides load balancing and fault tolerance.

+ 1 active-backup mode: Active-backup policy: only one slave in the link is active. A different slave becomes active if and only if, the active slave fails. MAC address of the binding is visible from the outside on a single port (NIC) to avoid confusion between the switch. This mode provides fault tolerance. The first option affects the behavior of this mode.

+ 2 balance-xor mode: XOR policy: transmit based [(adresse MAC XOR avec destination MAC traiterait de source) modulo County slave]. This selects the slave even for each destination MAC address. This mode provides load balancing and fault tolerance.

+ 3 broadcast mode: broadcasting policy: transmits everything on all slave interfaces. This mode provides fault tolerance.

+ Mode 4 802.3ad: IEEE 802.3ad dynamic aggregation of links. Creates aggregation groups who share the same speed and duplex settings. Use all the slaves in the active aggregator according to the 802.3ad specification.

    -Prerequisite:
-1.Ethtool support in the base drivers to retrieve the speed and duplex of each slave.
-Switch 2.A which takes care of IEEE 802.3ad dynamic aggregation of links. Most of the switches will require some type of configuration to activate 802.3ad mode.

+ Mode 5 balance-tlb: Adaptive load balancing transmission: Channel link that doesn't require any special switch support. Outgoing traffic is distributed according to the intensity of the current (relative speed) on each slave. Inbound traffic is received by the current slave. If the receiving slave fails, another slave takes over the MAC address of the failed receiving slave.

    -Prerequisite:
-1.Ethtool support in the base drivers to retrieve the speed of each slave.

+ 6 balance-alb mode: Adaptive load balancing: includes balance-tlb plus receive balancing (rlb) for IPV4 traffic and doesn't require any special switch support. Receive load balancing is achieved by ARP negotiation. Link driver intercepts the ARP replies sent by the local system on their way and replaces the hardware address of source with the unique hardware address of one of the slaves in the bond as different counterparts use different physical addresses for the server.

PS. http://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/shared-content/data-sheets/en/Documents/dell-powerconnect-2800-series-spec_sheet.pdf said that the 2800 series supports LACP, so if I'm worried about anything on my iSCSI side slap me please in the face, but I guess even in this case, I'm still not sure how to configure the ESXi host because it does not support LACP without vSphere and my original configuration is a free version , so I have no web vSphere management needed to make the LACP allow the change.

Not sure if it is of no use: example configuration of EtherChannel / switches control protocol LACP (Link Aggregation) with ESXi/ESX and Cisco/HP (1004048), but that's where I was to base the choice on IP hash from.

It must have the support of layer 3 to achieve IP hash, IP addressing is a 3-layer technology, so a 6200 series or higher or the soon to be released N3000 series.

Currently I see many MAC beat in the log of the switch.  From my understanding, I expect the MAC address out all ports, because that's what'd ESXi when you use 'route based on the hash of the IP.  I'm worried about the impact this might have on the CPU / switch.
