VMware Fusion 5.02 - Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS - vfat external HD

Host: VMware Fusion on Mac OS 5.02 X Lion 10.7.5.

Comments Server Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on VMware Fusion 5.02

I get a hd on linux vfat and share it on the local network.

It works great but:

When I have to suspend the prompt, the system only umount the drive properly.

The system says that ther an error in the script suspends even if I apply this hack:

http://communities.VMware.com/thread/417724

I try to use aliases in rc.d and script in but if fails.

Another big mistake is the following: after the resumption, the usb device (initially present in/dev/sdb) come on in/dev/sdc, and obviously samba and netatalk lose all links.

Is it possible to use an external hard drive with vmware and share it on the local network with services like samba, netatalk, apache...?

Thank you all!

In my tests, I see two errors:

(1) it was impossible to start virtualmachines headless and without host connection, if the .vmwarevm is stored on an external volume

(2) if I connect to a host computer (for maintenance, for example) and after I disconnect from the host, the virtual machine closed in very bad way.

I hope I'm more clear before and thank you very much for your suggestions, they are very helpful!

I did hear that your op just had no time to address but want to raise the issue of Time Machine.

FWIW in VMware Fusion although we can leave a virtual machine without head vmrun however I don't think that it is officially fully supported and certainly not the case when you run a Virtual Machine as a Service, so to speak, by starting it before or without logging in.  Having said that I'm not saying it's impossible, just that since the intention of VMware Fusion is a consumer product, it was not designed to be used in this way, although to a certain extent, it can.   So expect to have problems and still maintain good backups of VMS as it relatively easy to trash a VM running headless as a service or not.

Your number 1 is logical because I don't think that not bootable external Volumes are normally mounted before the user login, even if never didn't have the need to test and see if they were or when during the process startup, they are mounted.   Have you tried a solution to mount a volume prior to the opening of session and before starting the virtual machine without head of script?  BTW so I haven't tried it and so cannot tell whether it is doable, but I would be surprised it wasn't.

A time, I wrote running a VM headless (no GUI) and the command Shutdown / Suspend with Mac OS X Reboot/Shutdown but I have not updated to take account of all the debates in the thread if you need to read the full thread.  Using the information here I have tried to add code to mount the external volume before first starting the virtual machine without a head.

As for number 2, time where I was using a VM without head began before connecting, I had no problem, if I need to connect to something else and then log out and have the VM without head still works well so I don't know what to say or what I can offer without being able to test under the exact usage scenario you are employing.  Unfortunately, I have other things I want to do then do test on this issue since I don't currently have a need to run headless or would do so (run headless) from an external source.  And I don't see a future need for me.

That said, if you invent a solution I encourage you to share so if others have the same need, they can benefit from your efforts.

Now, my problem is that even if the installation goes very well - when it comes to anything keypad entry works.  I can type, but no characters appear.  Outside of the machine virtual all works well.  The mouse works fine in the virtual machine.  I can even 'free' the mouse using control - so I know the keyboard does something, but I can't type in the virtual machine.  What can I do or check this?

I don't want to cancel the installation from the beginning and I need the keyboard to the original user of the installation.

  • Access to the web server that is running in VMWare Fusion (Windows 7)

    Hello:

I have an old asp application running on the Windows IIS7 server running in VMWare Fusion on my Macbook. It works very well if access http://localhost side windows in Fusion.  How do you get it from other computers on the network? I usually not done anything with access to the network on the windows side. I tried to use the same IP Mac address is visible, which is 192.168.0.xxx, that does not work. On the Windows operating system side it has the IP address 192.168.216.xxx, I think it's just a fake to connect with the Macbook side of things.

What URL to use? VMWare Fusion additional requirements?

    Thank you!

If you value Network Adapter to the Virtual Machine Bridged then use either DHCP or assign a proper IP address provision that is beyond the scope of the address Pool IP DHCP from the router to the network card in the Windows Virtual Machine, you can reach then the virtual machine just like any other physical local network Machine by using its IP address example: http://192.168.0.10

If you cannot use Bridged so you use NAT with Port Forwarding.  To enable Port Forwarding on VMnet8, change you the [incomingtcp] section in Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.conf by the example shown in the config file.  Do it with the stop the Virtual Machine, not suspended, and VMware Fusion closed.

  • Port sharing ethernet physycal between the Mavericks and Ubuntu using VMware Fusion

    Hi all

I use VMware Fusion on Mac OS Mavericks 6.0.2, and I need to connect a physical device to manage using a Ubuntu 12.04 VM. In addition, the host computer is connected to a public network, using a Wi - Fi connection.

I put the ip of the physical device by USB configuration, but I was unable to get by using ethernet or the guest or the host computer. I tried to configure the NIC of the NAT guest, as well as the bridge too. Nothing seems to work. I don't know if the virtual machine is able to handle the physical Ethernet port.

Ideas for the configuration of the network device (NAT, bridget, etc.) or the ip configuration?

Thank you very much in advance.

Sorry, I left an important step.  You must also configure the host's Ethernet card to use a manual IP address in the same subnet assigned to the Virtual Machine and the sensor.

    1. connect sensor card via USB and set the IP address and subnet mask, disconnect USB.

    2. connect the sensor to the host (Mac) Port Ethernet card.

    3. in the Apple menu > Preferences system... > network > Ethernet > configure IPv4: manually, then set the IP address: and the subnet mask: properly.

    4. from the Virtual Machine settings > network adapter > Bridged Networking > Ethernet

    5. in the guest OS virtual machine to set manually the appropriate IP address and subnet mask.

    Example:

The IP address of the host on the Ethernet adapter: 192.168.3.1 subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Guest OS Ethernet adapter IP address: 192.168.3.2, subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Sensor onboard IP address of the Ethernet card: 192.168.3.3, subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

In this example, the sensor Council will be addressable by the host or the guest to 192.168.3.3.

BTW I just tested it using my Thunderbolt Display Ethernet with a normal cable (straight not crossed) RJ45 connected directly to a device addressable IP, VMware Fusion and a virtual Windows machine.  Although the same works with an Ubuntu VM as I have in the past also.

This should work without any problem but make sure that the firewall or other security software on the host and guest are not blocking communications!

  • How to migrate a machine Ubuntu in VMWare Fusion?

    Hello

I tried to find a way to get one of my Ubuntu installations has migrated to a VMWare Fusion.  I have a virtual machine that works fine under Parallels, but it is not migrated successfully in VMWare.  My alternative is a notebook that has a Ubuntu 9.10 installed with everything I want on my virtual machine.  Is there an equivalent of "Migration Wizard" for Ubuntu?

    Thank you

    Mark

You could give the following a try...

Download the Clonezilla Live .iso image file and you can start the virtual machines directly from the .iso image.  If you are on a physical LAN you can connect directly to create Fusion Virtual Machine and start the two virtual machines at the same time and then image directly from a virtual hard disk on the source to the target on the other Virtual Machine.  The only thing you have to do format the virtual hard drive target first, I uses an ISO Image of GParted of Live for this and then you can actually use the single .iso image to start the two VM and make a record for clone remote disc.  Regarding the virtual hard drive on the target I do the same size as the source and format a primary partition of the type the source is, as an example, ext4 and the value of the indicator to boot on it.  Clonzilla will take care of the rest with regard to the provision of the source.

If you can not networked together, then you must go drive in the image and the image on the disc.

  • Cannot be updated for the new VMWare Fusion - connection to the update server

    Hello

My apologies if I seem ignorant and things must be explained clearly to me, but I am a Mac user on a Macbook Pro for the first time. Have installed Vmware Fusion, and am also running Windows XP. Whenever I have try and upgrade to the latest version of VMware fusion, I get an error saying "connection to the update server has been lost. How to fix this problem please? Subsequently I can't write any DVD on my Mac. Very frustrating.

Please could someone help and advise what I can do?

    Thanking you!

Suggest that you download the full version of VMware Fusion and then uninstall/reinstall it from the .dmg image file that you download.

  • Use an ESX Server 3.0.2 VMDK file in VMWARE Fusion?

Is it possible to use copies of the virtual host systems, which already exist on our VMWARE ESX cluster in VMWARE Fusion software, I run on my APPLE MACBOOK PRO laptop? I use VMWARE Fusion, Version 3.0.2, and our ESX Server is on version 3.0.2.

    Thanks in adnvance

    Panos Tsapralis.

You can convert a VM ESX in Fusion using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone product.  The only downside is that you can only convert a Windows VM.  You can download the converter on the link below.

  • Can I run a machine virtual de VMware Fusion, VMware Server 2?

I looked at a bunch of documentation confusing but couldn't find a clear overview of what VMware Server 2 does in fact.

I hope that I can take the virtual machines that I've created with VMware Fusion and download them on VMware Server 2 on a server somewhere and run it from there.

Is this possible?   Is there any clear, simple documentation that indicates how to proceed?

Thanks for any information you can give me!

    Hello

If you run the virtual machine in fusion directly in vmware server, these are the steps to follow:

    (1) find out where are the fusion virtual machine files.

    (2) stop & remove merge (do not remove fisically hd!) virtual machine.

    (3) copy files of the virtual machine of fusion to the vmware server host (with the .vmx file and the hard should be enough) in the directory you designate as data store for vm vmware server files in the installation of vmware server.

    (4) use the "adding a virtual machine to inventory" to navigate to the file .vmx of the virtual machine that you copied before

    (5) the machine running and try. (if a question arises, you say that you copied the VM).

Maybe you should do some additional steps as reconfigure it the virtual machine under vmware virtual network install, but there are minor and easy changes.

Here is some information about the files that make up a virtual computer: http://www.vmware.com/support/ws55/doc/ws_learning_files_in_a_vm.html

  • SQL Server 2005 Express Installation on Windows XP VMware Fusion (Mac)

    Hello

I tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express edition on Windows XP VMWare, the installation of the system-error, restart and get a bluescreen with a system error and it does this in a loop without end I tried twice (both with the installations of Windows XP) and both times he wandered outside with a blue system error screen.

I have no idea why it error. I chose the default configuration for the installation of vmware windows xp, 512 MB RAM and 40 GB of space. And my network setup is NAT.

If anyone has an idea about this, please give me some ideas.

    Thank you

I have just downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and had no problem installing Windows XP and I really don't see this as a matter of VMware Fusion although even if it was I'd go about troubleshooting it as if it were a physical Machine and would start by re-download SQL Server 2005 Express after compensation to any browser cache to make sure that the download was good.  Of course, on a clean at least build, to also have Windows Installer 3.1 and .NET Framework 2 installed first.

This is the name and the size with a MD5 checksum unofficial of the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition I downloaded from the Download Details: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.

  • Text on VMware Fusion 3 Server can be also clear that when XP runs on a Windows computer?

I installed Windows XP in VMware Fusion 3 on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.2. Text is not as sharp as it would be on a Windows machine. This is particularly noticeable when I compare websites in Fire Fox in VMware to the same site on Fire Fox in OS X I have the same problem in Word, Excel and ACT!

Text on VMware Fusion 3 Server can be also clear that when XP runs on a Windows computer?

    oldbologna wrote:

On a Windows computer simply press the print key (sometimes shown as Prnt Scrn) screen and this places a copy of the office to the Clipboard, and then you can paste it into Paint (start > run > mspaint) and save it as a .jpg file.

  • VMware Fusion 3.0.1 update error (the connection to the update server has been lost)

    Hello

I tried to update my vmware fusion many times, but I get this error message. I'm sure that is not because of my connection because I was running OSX update at the same time and I was able to update my OS x without any problems. VMware actually stopped the 3.0.1 update because they are a lot of bugs or there is something else, what happens to me laptop. BTW, I use a 2.8 Ghz MBP.

    See you soon

Instead of updating through the Fusion program, try to download the package install .dmg and upgrading in this way.  Go to http://www.vmware.com/download/fusion , scroll down and get information, then download the full version (415 MB) or the Light version (170 MB, less AV and some tools).   The light version can download additional items later if necessary (I hope).

  • I give up on VMware Fusion for now

I've stuck with it for a long time because I couldn't understand how to clone VMS in VirtualBox.  Well well, after destruction of copy a 11.10 ubuntu Server VM and pull up in VMware Fusion 4.1.1 (Lion) and find the totally different copy of the original - and find the original also - I got it.  Not being is not able to make clones in VirtualBox can not take more time than I lost starting over and over again.

Wish me good luck.  I might have to go back.  Sign... So much time lost.

Sorry, you have problems however, I must say that it is must be something that you are doing wrong or bad hardware like bad memory or HARD drive, etc and not something, it's for lack of VMware.  I can say that because I have been full cloned VM cloning or related times manually and with built-in commands, as appropriate basis on one product VMware, in many different VMware products for 10 years and I don't remember it ever screw up the original (not that that would be serious because I always have proper backups) or the clone failing.  I did it with dozens of different systems of exploitation/Versions and moving VMs between Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

  • VMware Fusion keeps resetting my network file

I'm trying to set up a Windows Server VM and allow access to external computers through RDP/DRC. To enable port forwarding, I added the following text to the end of my "/ Library/Preferences/VMWare Fusion/network" file (addresses changed because I'm paranoid that way):

    [incomingtcp]

    # Port forwarding for incoming RDP requests

    3389 = 172.16.252.10:3389

    [incomingudp]

    # Port forwarding for incoming RDP requests

    3389 = 172.16.252.10:3389

The problem is that every time I restart VMWare Fusion, my network file returns to its previous state, and my updated the file is stored in networking.bak.0.

    Am I missing something here?

If it helps: I'm under VMWaare Fusion 7.1.2. Network of my VM is set to NAT (alias "share with my MAC"). My virtual computer is configured with a static IP, the same, I added in the network file. I tested DRC between host and the VM and it works fine, I just need to enable access by other computers on the same network.

Thanks in advance to anyone reading and/or responding to this.

I know it's lame to answer my own question, but I just realized what was wrong. Apparently, I got some wrong information about the Internet, and I should have added the text in the file nat.conf instead of the network file.

  • Buy VMware Fusion 7, but the v5 download and run the merger also?

I looked on the website of VMware, but impossible to find the answer to this question:

A customer can purchase VMware Fusion version 7 (the current version) but also to download and run an earlier version of VMware Fusion (for example, merger v5) for temporary use? Here's an example scenario:

    * A VMware customer has two Macs. One is an old Mac running Snow Leopard, and the other is a new Mac running Mavericks or Yosemite. The customer wants to use the new Mac, go ahead (and give the old Mac). The client runs even a few applications that are not supported on what it is later than Snow Leopard (for example PowerPC applications). The obvious solution is to run these applications in a guest of Snow Leopard Server in VMware Fusion on the new Mac.

    * The problem is that Snow Leopard Server does not install as a guest operating system on the recent Mac models of the client, but it can run an existing Snow Leopard Server prompt that was created on an older Mac.

    * The client has this old Snow Leopard Mac. Unfortunately, it won't run VMware Fusion 7. It will run in VMware Fusion version 5, however. The customer wants to run VMware Fusion 5 on the old Mac to create the Snow Leopard Server on old Mac prompt, then copy the comments for the new Mac where it can run under VMware Fusion 7.

    HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS:

--> How can the customer buy VMware Fusion 7, but also to download a copy of VMware Fusion 5 for this operation 'create a Snow Leopard Server prompt' unique on the old Mac?

-> Will VMware provide a Fusion 5 license when the trial period expires on the old Mac before the customer can get a Snow Leopard Server comments work?

I sent you this link last night via Message private and also posted in your other thread on the subject.  You should be able to use as disk utility here: create a disk image of physical Mac OS X install media.

If this process fails to create an image that starts on your newer Mac, please let us know, as this is a question we want to address.  I'm not aware of any circumstances which require a downgrade from Fusion 5 install Snow Leopard Server.

    Thank you
