Vmware HA cluster

Good afternoon colegas,

Desde ja Agradea§o a definition back Senhores,

Marcello Rogério.

OS must tem advantages disadvantages of e.

Microsoft Cluster O tem a hidtorico ser resiliente a falhas to OS, patch management, etc..

Por exemplo, to voce precisa apply patch without windows, pode fazer failover da size para outro no cluster e o patch apply only no offline, starting from dar, etc..

Very, o Microsoft e muito limitado com relaçao aos SOs e cluster management e suportados nesse ponto o Cluster VMware got up hidtorico.

  • Update the VMware tools cluster HA/FT

We have a cluster running multiple 5.1 ESXi hosts and a 5.0 ESXi host. The virtual machine running on 5.1 guests show their tools VMWare is obsolete, but the virtual machine running on the 5.0 show their tools as being COMMON since with each new version of ESX, VMWare tools must also be updated. My question is: If we update VMware tools on virtual machines on 5.1, guests will be able to run on the host 5.0 if necessary? Therefore, an active cluster HA/IP hosts automatically migrated to guests according to load, etc.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

You can use the "product VMware interoperability matrices" to check compatibility. See the attached screenshot where you can see that running the ESXi 5.1 on ESXi hosts tools 5.0 is supported. • Design of cluster question

I have a question about the design of cluster for the NSX. We have a mid size deployment (> 10 hosts) and have a management cluster and a cluster of edge/calculation. It was designed so that our VM management would be isolated active NSX workloads. Design guide mentions that it is not recommended to collapse the edge and Compute clusters, due to the fact that Edge workloads are centered on the CPU. My question is, are there problems in my current setup? We actively monitor our guests and are ready to evolve when necessary. As long as monitor us the growth, there should not be problems in this correct design?

As a separation of recommendation of general management, plans to control and design data can be considered as recommended. Also, in a Vsphere Perspective, it may be a good idea to keep the management and Compute clusters separated because of these explanined advantages and disadvantages:

    http://www.settlersoman.com/why-to-create-the-VMware-management-cluster/

    http://longwhiteclouds.com/2013/04/09/best-practice-architecture-for-your-vSphere-environment-build-a-management-cluster/

Since it's scaling architecture, it is possible to deploy NSX to 5 guests up to 1000 s of the armed forces, as well as design criteria can be very different depending on environmental physics and applications.

For Cluster Management, due to the Redundanncy of 3 3ESXi host controllers are needed.  If the Edge Cluster is also separated, then again redundancy requires at least 2 ESXi hosts. The thread out of this design is just to put the hosts in the Cluster edge VMs aboard and does not use CPU and RAM resources for virtual machines to calculate serving Enterprise Applications. So for 10 hosts using 5 hosts for management + reduced edge the Compute Cluster size, so this might not always possible. Below single same cluster for all computer + Edge + management can be retained. But if there are 100 guests, separating the 4 Cluster Edge hosts may be preferred.

So if 2 groups seems the best choice according to the design constraints, then there are 2 combinations because where to put the virtual machines of edge

    1. Management + Edge and calculation
    2. Calculation + Edge and management
    • A point to note is maybe from the VMs edge talk to a physical world such as routers that they need of uplink Vlan to carry the virtual machine to the physical Wan or Internet traffic. According to the physical data center project, extend these VLANS can therefore not possible or desirable for the Administration Pod or pods resource.
    • Required total bandwidth for North-South traffic. If AREA is edge Cluster of 8 virtual machines can measure up to 80Gbps. If Applications require this kind of high speed, then consuming this amount of traffic on 3 Cluster Management host is not possible due to the physical number of 10 Gbps rising on the host.  If VLANs and Vlan management Uplink coexist on the same uplink, the network IO control may be necessary. Virtual management is not the destination of the traffic calculation machines, this amount of broadband should serve as the VTEPs of host management traffic VXLAN of the logical switch DLR-Edge, increasing the number of jumps and latency. On the contrary, if edge VMS are on the Cluster Compute offering this kind of traffic broadband may be easier.
    • Again the total number of VMS in edge in the design can be important. 2 edges may be sufficient for a variety of Applications and the number of virtual machines. Or there may be several edges if NAT or duplicate IPs is necessary for the separation of the tenants in a Cloud Computing environment.
    • The size of the border VMs and vCPU requirements may change depending on services such as load, firewall, NAT, VPN balancing comes.
    • If the scale of the traffic is expected to increase for large sums, then putting Edge VMs to Compute Cluster may be a good idea.
    • In the two options for resource planning can be useful between the edge and Manamgent VMs on option 1 and Edge and calculate VMs for the 2nd Option.

This thread there are links on when to use groups 1, 2 or 3 depending on the size of the environment.

    VDS and NSX Cluster

Basically, the choice of the Clusters may be:

    • 3 separate groups to Compute. Board and management for large environment (where the distinction between large and medium begins can be a design constraint)
    • 2 groups consisting of calculation and management + Edge for environment environment
    • Only Cluster Compute + Edge + management for Smaill environments. (Resource planning may be required for coumpute is no oversubscription of VMs calculate the CPU resources of memory components NSX)

Basically depends on the full scalability of the Vsphere environments. For example, for the management of Cluster where there is the Manager of NSX and controllers, 3 Seperate ESXi hosts are recommended

  • vSPhere VM without protection in cluster HA

    Hello user of VMware

I have a very strange problem with my vmware ha cluster and nfs.

vSphere is installed on two servers HP ProLiant DL380 Gen8

vCenter runs on a HP ProLiant DL160 G6.

NFS and iSCSI is already running on a HP ProLiant DL180 G8

In my data center, I have configured a cluster HA and DRS, on two cluster nodes that are mounted the iscsi and nfs data banks.

If I create or move a virtual machine for the data nfs virtual machine storage will be unprotected, but if I move the iscsi data store the virtual machine, the virtual machine will be protected.

The virtual machine could not be vSphere protected HA and HA cannot attempt to restart after a power failure.

I found many users with these problems and I tried the following:

-Disable and enable the HA option

-Delete cluster nodes, cluster of delete, create the cluster add nodes again.

-Remove the old VirtualCenter and installed a new windows with the latest version of vCenter Server

But nothing helps, does anyone have an idea?

    Thank you.

If you have vswitch0 with 2 interfaces vmk. management and one for vmotion and nfs?

you have configured LACP or something similar on the physical switches? If so you must select the IP load balancing hashing type...

This is perhaps the reason why the cluster think the cluster is not high available

It could also be a known error of vmware: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2020082

    Hello

It is on the issue of network configuration in a cluster VMware and have less experience VMware.

See the attachment of the section network example of my post here.  It's an old design copper I did some time, but is still topical.  Personally, I mix ports through the NIC cards to create links and use multi-nic vMotion.  As you do use network storage, you can use multiple NICs for your comments link.

  • example of a good practices network VMware?

    Hello

I'm planning a vmware host cluster two for the first time and I would like to get some tips on the piece of networking of it. Best practices suggest separate vsphere traffic network for management traffic. Does this mean I should have a separate network/subnet for host, vMotion, SAN and VM real data traffic management? And each of them should be on their own VLAN?

It would be easier for me to understand if I have an example with IPs and VLANS shown on them. Anyone know of any good vmware best practice examples that I can find?

    Thank you.

    Shivani

You are on the right track. The ESX host has only a default gateway, and this default gateway must be on the vMkernel MGMT interface.

Other interfaces such as vMotion and storage (NFS and iSCSI) generally should not be routed and do not need a default gateway. In VMware 5.5 introduced several piles of TCPIP and the ability to assign a VMkernel interface to a stack, but this feature is not required for most installations.

He would just place the interface of vmotion of all hosts in your cluster in the same VLAN, and they will be able to talk to each other without a gateway L3 on the VLAN. Same deal with storage, put the hosts and the interface of the storage on the same target VLAN.

  • Cluster SQL 2008 R2 on a computer using RDM virtual

    Hello

I want to create a cluster SQL using RDM.  I understand that I must use CF for this to work.  I LUN configured with FC already and I can add the ROW to the first VM.  But how that the RDM available to 2nd VM for use of shared disk?  They will be available on the second server SQL I have started creating my cluster?  Has anyone created a cluster SQL using RDM?

    Thank you

    D

To use the same ROW (not simultaneously of course) from another virtual computer, you must add the hard mapping file that was created for the RDM when you added the LUNS to the first VM. However, there are a few additional settings that you must take care. Please take a look at KB VMware: Microsoft Cluster Service (MSCS) support on ESXi/ESX for complete documentation.

  • Why a framework for vm cluster restart priority? and what is happening with the explanation of availability guide

    1.

I can see why "by vm" restart priorities are to a parameter value. For example you can prioritize machine virtual startup order relative to other virtual machines so that you get your first AD and DNS servers etc.

But what's the point of a cluster environment?  I guess this means how you want to fight your guests stay for these virtual machines running. for example you 32 at a time (maybe high definition), or start to 1 at a time (maybe low setting)

Which brings me to the point 2

    2.

It seems that availability guide is a bit confused about this subject and talks about specific vm priorities when he must speak of cluster priorities. So really, she explains vm priorities both times and explains any of cluster priorities.

If you go to (vSphere availability Guide: creating and using VMware HA Clusters: creating a Cluster VMware HA: Virtual Machine Options: vm restart priority settings)

He mentions first boot vm priority talks about startup relative , I deduce that it means her talk of priorities to restart each of the virtual machines in the virtual machine settings and not a cluster configuration.

Then he said: ' the values for this parameter are: off, low, medium (default) and high "- but these are the settings for the cluster priority! If she was talking about relative vm settings, he'd say ' off, low, medium, high and use of the cluster (default) settings.

It says so at the bottom of the page

"Note - after you create a VMware HA cluster, you can override the default settings of cluster to restart priority and isolation response specific virtual machines..." »

It's weird since the section above already speaks on startup for specific virtual machines

The clustering is where you set the 'default' value essentially for virtual machines. After that, you must change this setting on a per-VM basis, as appropriate. Availability guide is indeed vague on this subject, and I would point out to our team of Tech-Pubs.

a test, I'm trying to create a cluster of 2 vm that runs

    ENT Ent/W2k8 SQL

    on ESX 4 build 208167.

the shared disks are hard files stored on local VMFS on ESX host voluome.

I followed the procedure of "cluster in a box":

1 created a new virtual machine, as if it were a stand-alone server.

2 - Adding a drive on the 1:0 SCSI bus (original disk was on 0:0).

    VMDK daughter is 'vmfs/volumes/.../ClusterNode1/ClusterNode1_1.vmdk '.

    3. it automatically added a second SCSI controller on the virtual machine

4 - Set the virtual shared SCSI bus

5 created a second vm, even as the first

    6 - adding a drive on the bus 1:0.

same VMDK file is identical to step 2, "vmfs/volumes/.../ClusterNode1/ClusterNode1_1.vmdk".

7 - Place the new virtual controller so

8 - I began the first Vm and... Crash with the following message:

VMware ESX Server cannot open the virtual drive, ' / vmfs/volumes/.../ClusterNode1/ClusterNode1_1.vmdk ' for clustering. Verify that the virtual disk was created using the "thick".

Cannot open disk ' / vmfs/volumes/.../...vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

  • Exchange 2010 (HA) on VMWare

    Hi all

Can someone please highlight the options/limitations HA to Exchange 2010 on VMWare ESX 3. 5Infrastructure. I read on DAG, but I do not think that it would be supported by Microsoft (on VMWare) the ESX servers are grouped together and using vmotion, HA and DRS and it would be helpful to know whether to use a feature of VMware/exchange to satisfy this requirement.

We believe using a 3rd party cloud product/service which consists of a web front end bespok application (described above the ' architecture that we do not control / manage underlying) and so we can only assign virtual disks to a single virtual machine so I would also like to know if I get around this without using a shared virtual machine storage...

    Your contribution is appreciated.

With a view to support Exchange can be deployed on a Cluster of ESX from VMware and be 100% taken in charge by Microsoft and VMware.  If you choose to set up in the Exchange 2010 DAG environment you can still maintain support by Microsoft and VMware by disabling the HA/DRS features for only members of the DAG.  It's strictly a requirement of support, the use of DAG in the breast in a VMware ESX cluster works very well on the technical side of things.  You mention ESX 3.5 so I'll call that in ESX 3.5 VMware HA/DRS should be disabled at the level of the cluster, ESX, ESX 4.0 update 1 changed cela to allow HA/DRS ESX cluster-wide and only requires deactivation at the virtual machine level.

Regarding storage shared; in a DAG environment only assign you storage to a single virtual machine, there is no storage shared so that shouldn't be a problem there.  However, by VMware support, that data must reside on fibre channel attached storage, no VMFS, or iSCSI.  I have included some links below that will help better understand support of Exchange on VMware solutions.
