VMWare vSphere4 - esx3.5 - MD1000 - Configuration suggestions

Ladies and gentlemen,

Relatively new in this area and after a few suggestions - have a Dell PE2900 host running esx 3.5 / VMWare (currently with six virtual machines running Windows Server 2003 and 2008 R2). Attached to it is a Dell MD1000 (via the PERC 6/E adapter) completely filled with drives of 1 TB in RAID 5, giving a combined storage of about 12 TB.

I am aware of the limit of 2 TB virtual disks, but was hoping to find a way to present some of this storage as a 8TB "chunk" for use as a storage area for the video / those resources (for example if all goes well presented as a mapped drive).

So far have tried: -.

  • Creating a RAID 5 of 8 TB of OpenManage group - cannot see properly in vSphere due to the limit of 2 TB disks
  • Created several TB 1.9 RAID groups and joining these together with extensions - not identify as 'reader' in vSphere due to the limit of 2 TB.

Is it possible to do so under the current configuration? Upgrade of the operating system / software is not currently possible :-(

Your suggestions are greatly accepted!

If I go into the properties of one of the virtual machines on this host is trying to create a 4 TB drive, I hit the limit of 2 TB virtual disk. Happy to accept that is the limit in my setup, but is it possible to "assemble" these virtual drives of 2 TB?

With Windows, that a solution could also be used to highlight disks to create a greater volume.

  • VMware vSphere4: what's new course.

    Hello

    I am interested in doing the vcp4 exam;

    2 years ago I did the course VMware Infrastructure 3: install and configure, but I did the test.

    In vmware, there is no evidence to do this course and the instructor centre is unclear.

    According to placed on the vmware site:

    2. If you are currently a VCP on VMware Infrastructure 3

    • Take and pass the VCP vSphere 4 review. This option will be available only until December 31, 2009. Since 2010, essential VCPs on the VI3 VMware vSphere 4: what is the new class in order to upgrade.

    • 4. If you are not a VCP on VI3, but attended one of the prerequisite classes (install & configure, deploy Secure & Analyze or accelerated).

    follow and succeed the VCP on VMware Infrastructure 3 VMware exam OR attend the vSphere™ 4: what's new course.

    or take and transmit the VCP vSphere 4 review.

    My way is point 4, but the question is:

    If no record I did the course of version 3, I will not review of version 4 problems?

    Thank you

  • Anyone who uses the VMWare adapter? Do you have suggestions for a connection problem?

    I have a connection to a vCenter who works for years. (touch wood).  I am trying to add an another vCenter to tide.  I use the exact same username and password, but I get an error on the valid username and password.

    I tried on 3 different environments of tide.  I can connect to the application of vSphere with the exact same username and password that I updated the current and he succeeds, but the tide connection still does not work.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thank you!

    I suspect that you are facing a known issue in VMware runtime configuration of the user.

    CSCuu49010 - user VMware 5.5 must be created as domain\username.

    Symptom:
    VMware connection is not getting up when the runtime user has domain association

    Conditions:
    1. Create RTU for VMware
    2. Specify  and
    3. Enter the password for VMWare adapater
    4. Now, go ahead and create a new connection for VMware
    5. Connection will not be coming up
    6. Now, remove the domain from RTU and instead specify the username in format
    7. Connection is now up and running

    Workaround:
    In the runtime user configuration associated with the VMware adapter, remove domain name from the Domain drop down and instead specify username in format.
    You use the areas in your user Runtime used for the new vCenter connection? If so try to remove the domain name from the drop down field and instead specify the user name in format.
  • Cisco's ASA 5510 VPN configuration suggestion

    Hello

    We have a cisco ASA5510 and our client has a device of Juniper. We already have a vpn tunnel between two locations and its working fine.

    Now they have networks that are in a safer area, if we add these subnets of the current tunnel we are not able to access it.

    so, what they suggest we can reconfigure the VPN to be a road based on VPN instead of policy based OR configure a second VPN tunnel.

    not sure about cisco ASA supports route according to the tunnels? ... Can we create a 2nd tunnel between the same devices (asa5510 and thei Juniper device) as remainders IP that identical, only the internal remote networks will change for me. is this possible?

    do I have to make changes to the current tunnel?

    Thank you

    Smail

    Hello

    Cisco ASA does not support database path tunnels.

    You must add new networks to crypto ACL. They add new VPN policies.

  • Bridged mode VMWare - no network in "Network Configuration".

    Hello

    OK so I managed to install VMPlayer V6 and V7 one or two weeks of back - and even creates the VM etc.

    Since then, I uninstalled and tried MS Hyper-V. Guess what - I am back to VMWare and disillusioned with Hyper-V.

    Well - I wanted the trial of Win10/VS2015 with the Android adapter - who said I need Hyper-V :-((.)

    BUT - after re installed VMWare - had said that I couldn't create a VM with Hyper-V installed.

    Then uninstalled, re-installed VMWare Player V7 and tried to install a XP SP3 simple VM client since then:-O.

    The problem is that when I select Bridged in the network card, the button "Configure adapters" appears an empty list.

    Now, I have no idea - despite this forum etc. why or how trawling to reactivate the network interfaces:-O.

    PC is a Dell laptop with ethernet (no cable), an adapter wifi, a TAPI interface and a couple of VPN. VMWare is also VMNet1 and VMNet8.

    The settings for these two shows "VMWare Bridge Protocol" as not checked, so my best guess is that this must be activated?

    BUT if I check it just - it seems to make no difference: o

    Can someone tell me a solution please?

    Thank you very much - I hope so...

    BR

    Graham

    OK fixed it:-O.

    For anyone who needs to know - hope that help is here...

    Seems that MS Hyper-V may have installed a "network bridge" - as I had never seen before in my "network settings":-O.

    My wifi adapter also showed that it was "bridged".

    Do some trawling more - I found an MS article that says that Windows can have a 'bridge' but only ONE software!

    So - I suspected that, as it were - VMWare could not create its version: - O - seems plausible to me!

    So - in for a penny - in for a book - I deleted and saw that my wifi connection dropped, then magically reconnected again without saying "bridged".

    I open VMWare Player and the parameters of the virtual machine with XP in it and like magic - the ' configure adapters now had my adapter Wifi :-)) - shown and checked.

    Start the virtual machine and bingo - we have now one IP (DHCP'd my router) - and can browse internet ;-)).

    So summary - just uninstall Hyper-V "stuff" hanging out - guess I can understand it-to the left as it would have been 'things' created AFTER the installation of Hyper-V.

    probably during the creation of the first VM.

    Panic-hope this helps someone else, at any given time.

  • Problem with the video for "VMware vSphere Hypervisor - install and configure.

    Hello

    In this page: https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/evalcenter?lp=default & p = free-esxi5

    When you click on the "Installation and configuration" tab, we have access to videos for vSphere Hypervisor.

    But at the moment, none of the video can be shown.  I tried this in my computer at home as well as my company computer and none works.

    Someone who works for VMware please check this problem.

    Thank you

    OK, I just found what was "wrong".  These videos are "optimized" for Internet Explorer!   Yes, I tried on Firefox and Chrome on XP Pro and Win7, nothing worked.  Then after reading your message, I thought ' what happens if I try that? "  ... and indeed, the videos are displayed inside, I.e. I got suddenly a bad feeling, like I was back at the beginning of the 21st century!

    Come on!  Who would still do 'optimized' only website to know today?   I'm sure they will not be displayed on my Tablet either.

    I found these videos on YouTube:

    http://www.YouTube.com/watch?v=_MofPJsG9gQ

    I think they are the same videos (but the quality is really bad... 360 p.: geez!).  Could someone confirm that they are indeed the same as those in vmware.com?  THX

    PS: Oh, on the section "Help", I found it at help | United States but I've seen no paragraph telling me how to report a problem on the website.

  • Networking question in VMware Workstation / nested ESXi network configuration problem

    Hi guys,.

    I am trying to set up a virtual lab, I setup a domain, a vcenter server and up to 1 ESXi host controller.

    I am really struggling with the network aspect in establishing a vmnic for storing shared, please see the attached screenshots and a few questions:

    1. Is a vmnic a real network map? or vmnic correspond to "network adapters" that you put in place since the setting of your virtual machine?

    I followed a tutorial and implement 3 NICs on the ESXi host, in Bridge mode, I tried this in my configuration of vmworkstation and I lose the connection to my server vcenter to the ESXi host.

    See screenshot attached to how I configured my ESXi host, screenshot is called 'screenshot2esxihost network', I run got each of the maps defined on NAT network.

    screenshot2esxihost network.JPG

    See also the screenshot of how I have my configuration of network settings in my VMWare Workstation, screenshot is called "screenshot1. the tutorial does not show how it has its editor of the virtual network configuration, but it puts its ESXi host NICs in BRIDGED mode, and I'm guessing that you can set this time within the virtual network adapter. If someone could tell me what changes should I make in there and on the network cards in my ESXi host, which would be really useful.

    screenshot1.JPG

    My domain controller, server ESXi hosts and vcenter are currently on the 192.168.86 range, which currently stood at NAT

    See also a screenshot from the vsphere client - I don't see a vmnic "vmnic0", my goal is to be able to add a "vmnic2" for a separate storage network.

    screenshot3 unable to add anymore vmnics.JPG

    any help would be received with gratitude, I VCP510 review at the end of the month and really hope to be able to get my lab setup as soon as possible.

    The vmnic is the rising 'physical' of an ESXi host. So with the 3 network cards that you configured for the host in VMware Workstation you will see under "Network adapters" and you can use them to vSwitches in the section "network".

  • Virtual Vmware HA Options of Machine configuration

    Morning,

    I am trying to configure Vmware HA VM Options on all Virtual Machines in a specific HA cluster using the following script:

    to connect-viserver virtualcenterserver $cs = get-cluster "NOMCLUSTER" $csadv = get-view $ $allvms = get - vm cs.id

    $csspec = new-object VMware.Vim.ClusterConfigSpecEx = new-object Vmware.vim.ArrayUpdateOperation = new-object VMware.Vim.ClusterDasVmConfigSpec $spec $uop

    foreach ($vm in $allvms) {$dasset = new-object VMware.Vim.ClusterDasVmSettings $dasset.isolationResponse = 'none' $dasset.restartPriority = 'high' $infospec = new-object Vmware.Vim.ClusterDasVmConfigInfo $infospec.dasSettings = $dasset $vmadv = $vm | get-view $infospec.key = $vmadv.moref $spec.info = $infospec $csspec.dasVMConfigSpec = $spec $csadv.} ReconfigureComputeResource_Task ($csspec, "true")

    }

    The script runs without error and create tasks to reconfigure, but I got the following errors in Virtual Center:

    Reconfigure the Cluster - a parameter specified is not correct

    Any ideas?

    Tanguy

    There are a few problems with your script

    (1) the properties of dasVMConfigSpec expects an array of objects ClusterDasVmConfigInfo

    (2) the Operation property requires "add" or "edit" depending on if the virtual computer already has a book of DAS loads or not

    (3) you can use the ReconfigureComputeResource_Task method outside the loop because we add a ClusterDasVmSettings object for each virtual computer

    (4) you probably want to get all the virtual machines on this group.

    In any case this script works for:

    $cs = get-cluster ""
    $csadv = get-view $cs.id
    $allvms = $cs | Get-VM

    $i = 0
    $csspec = new-object VMware.Vim.ClusterConfigSpecEx

    foreach ($vm in $allvms)
    {
      $csspec.dasVMConfigSpec += new-object VMware.Vim.ClusterDasVmConfigSpec
      $csspec.dasVMConfigSpec[$i].info = new-object Vmware.Vim.ClusterDasVmConfigInfo
      $csspec.dasVMConfigSpec[$i].Info.Key = ($vm | get-view).moref
      if($csadv.ConfigurationEx.DasVmConfig -eq $null){
        $csspec.dasVMConfigSpec[$i].Operation = "add"
      }
      else{
        $operation = "add"
        foreach($guest in $csadv.ConfigurationEx.DasVmConfig){
           if($guest.Key.Value -eq $csspec.dasVMConfigSpec[$i].Info.Key.Value){
             $operation = "edit"
           }
         }
         $csspec.dasVMConfigSpec[$i].Operation = $operation
      }
      $csspec.dasVMConfigSpec[$i].info.dasSettings = new-object VMware.Vim.ClusterDasVmSettings
      $csspec.dasVMConfigSpec[$i].info.dasSettings.isolationResponse = "none"
      $csspec.dasVMConfigSpec[$i].info.dasSettings.restartPriority = "high"

      $i++
    }
    $csadv.ReconfigureComputeResource_Task($csspec,$true)

  • Re: VMWare Server 2.0 lose configuration on re-boot (OpenSUSE)

    Hi all

    I am running vmware server 2 on my Open Suse 11 (x 64) on my laptop.

    Every time after that reboot it loses the vmware network config, no vmnet is running.

    After running vmware - config.pl and just accept the default values of the

    setting in network is started (again) and everything works but after reboot

    I need to repeat the process.

    Can someone help me out here what could be the problem?

    There is no admin special race (which are to change my host file, or simular)

    THX in advance

    Johan

    I had the same problem with a warning about the gcc version but my openSUSE 11.0 x 64 host works well after a reboot, so I don't think that this is relevant.

    So what output you get, exactly, when you run '/etc/init.d/vmware start '?

    Before you run this, you have the file/etc/vmware/not_configured?

  • Mobility AnyConnect client configuration suggestions

    We used IPSEC VPN 30XXs and ACS 4.3 (or 4.2?) with the former VPN clients but with Windows 10 years we can do is more work. Time for Anyconnect.   We have a few ASA 5510 / 5520 s with the Anyconnect Premium peer support so that we can move out of IPsec. I have it works using TLS with CAS but I think we need a new version of the AAA server too.

    Questions... What is the way better / cheaper to use a bit of a two-factor authentication. Currently it seems using GBA only a user name and password (no user/psw group) is used to authenticate in. A cert paid on the 55xxs to avoid the problem of security is not a problem, but for each client CERT would be cumbersome to manage. ICS seems to be the way forward for the management of users unless there is a compatible more easy/less expensive product.

    Directions of the best way to go would be appreciated as there seems to be a lot of options - all at additional costs. We want a complete IP connectivity that we have with IPsec, since we also have Citrix GW for specialized connections.

    The only options interested is to check for a virus protection service. We do not allow tunneling split for users allow I got it during the test (Split tunneling only for admin users).

    We'll stay with Anyconnect 3.x since it's free and supported for 3 years more than what I read. AC 4.x seems to involve extra cost of client of what we currently have.

    Thank you!

    If you're handy with Windows server and want to stay on the road of low cost, issues the certificates users using CEP through the ASA proxy protocol. Then their certificate issued is the first authentication method, and the second is their password.

    You can even set the ASA to remove the user name of the certificate automatically and prevent the user from typing in anything else if you so desire.

    Take a look at the Cisco Live presentation "BRKSEC-3053 practical PKI for remote VPN access" San Diego 2015. It is a very complete guide for this operation (and the use of EHT as well).

    If you want to party, I was very favorably impressed by the Duo safety-2FA solution. You do not pay a subscription but its quite reasonable price. They have a few step-by-step guides that are very well made.

  • Configuration of IPSec in VMWare ESXi can be applied to virtual machines running?

    Hello

    I have an operating system running inside VMWare ESXi 5.1.  Let's call is "MyLinux".  It is a modified version of Linux which does not support IPSec.  So I try to get VMWare to manipulate IPSec for MyLinux.

    I used esxcli orders to successfully create configurations for IPSec between VMWare itself and other systems.

    However, I wonder if I can use the same esxcli commands to configure IPSec between MyLinux and other systems?  In my tests, VMWare does not perform tunneling IPSec data between the running machines and other virtual systems.

    It is an illustration of the configuration I created for MyLinux in VMWare.  I also have a security policy that is not visible.

    Name Source address Destination address State SPI Mode Encryption Algorithm, integrity algorithm to life

    --------                              -------------------------------------      -------------------------------------  ------      -----     ---------     --------------------               -------------------           --------

    MyLinuxToExternalSA MyLINUX.IPv6.ADDRESS EXTERNAL. Mature IPv6.ADDRESS infinity 0 x 300 transport 3des-cbc hmac-sha2-256

    ExternalToMyLinuxSA EXTERNAL. IPv6.ADDRESS infinite mature MyLINUX.IPv6.ADDRESS of hmac-sha2-256 0 x 256 transport 3des-cbc

    When I captured a trace TCP ping between MyLinux and the external system, MyLinux never sent the IPSec packets. Everything was sent in the clear.  This suggests that VMWare does not apply the rule for MyLinux, but I would like to confirm.  Thank you.

    Kwabena

    When you configure IPSec on ESXi, you sécuriserez the VMkernel traffic, not the virtual machine... If you want to protect the traffic of the virtual machine, you will need to enable IPSec on guest operating system.

    Here is more information on IPSec on ESXi: VMware KB: IPv6 and IPsec configuration on vSphere ESX and ESXi 4.1, 5.x ESXi

  • What configuration of VMWare will work better for me?

    I have two sets of applications currently residing in two servers for exchanging information between them. A set of applications runs under SUSE Linux. The other set of applications runs under Windows 2008 Server x 64. I can rebuild both the Linux SUSE and Windows applications as 32-bit or 64-bit 32 vs 64-bit isn't a concern. To reduce the cost of deployment of the equipment, I want to run both sets of applications on a single Intel Blade base server. I'm envisioning running VMWare on Linux (if possible) which will then host a Windows VM, but I'm willing to accept another configuration that could be the best idea. What is of critical importance for me is stability applications must run under an SLA (Service Level Agreement).

    After the VMWare web site, is not clear to me what product I should consider to achieve the above objectives. What would be the optimal configuration and the VMWare product to achieve this configuration to satisfy my above stated requirements?

    I guess you are talking about a BL460c. It works perfectly with ESXi. With 8 GB and (hopefully) RAID 1 mirroring it should work perfectly. Make sure you have BBWC for your RAID controller. This makes a huge difference in the performance of the disk.

  • VMware and UPS (power of groups)

    Someone at - it a configuration suggested for the use of VMware Workstation with a UPS?

    The configuration on which I set is to install the utility on the host Machine and the Virtual Machine (s) UPS.  The inverter is connected to the host via a USB port. The utility will stop the host on the blackout after n minutes.  To start a virtual machine it takes the reins of USB, for example, the UPS utility.

    On the power supply failure, i.e., on battery, the virtual machine is forced to suspend, releasing control of the inverter to the host Machine.  After a few minutes, the host machine is stopped by the UPS utility.  Logic looks good, although a bit convoluted.

    Hope my explanation is clear.

    Everybody brings something similar, something different?

    Concerning

    k

    In general, I don't have the physical host directly communicate with the ups.  In part it depends on what type of software your using UPS.  I have a Tripplite and it has a 'server' and a client application.  The server app is installed on the machine that is physically connected to the USB cable from the UPS.  The app server can send a stop signal to any computer that is running the client application.  If the physical host server application and my virtual machines have the client application.  I put the threshold for virtual machines to close earlier than the host.  (e.g.: 10% battery remaining closed when VMs.)  Host stops when 5% remaining).  This gives the VMs sufficient time to stop before the host stops.  (Most of the VMS I don't suspend).  No need to have to go the 'control' between the VM and the host.

    For other brands of UPS, they can call their version of the software a "network" version and sometimes is not on any CD included, but you need to download or pay for it.

    1. If you're not a VCP3, but attended one of the sine qua non
      classes (VI3: install and configure;) VI3: Secure deployment &
      Analyze; or VI3: Fast Track).

      • Take and pass the exam of VCP3 OR attend the VMware vSphere4: what's new course.

      • Take and pass the VCP4 exam.

    Self-paced course is not enough, the new class with instructor is the only class that meets this requirement.

    It was announced last week that the VCP3 exam will remain available until the end of March 2010 and the last day VMware have deferred the date limit for holders of VCP3 obtain the VCP4 without having to attend a vSphere instructor course - you now have until the end of January 2010.
