VMWare Workstation 10 - jerky and unresponsive under load. [UPDATE: DisplayFusion cause possible] [SOLVED: DisplayFusion parameters]

I have a problem with some VMWare Workstation customers, which case the mouse and keyboard to the virtual machine stops responding for a second or two under load. The mouse cursor stops, or jerk around the screen, and once past the load will be generally shot in another part of the screen. Similarly, the keyboard will become unresponsive, but when the load goes it will tend to double/triple type characters have been typed during the slow down.

I use these virtual machines primarily for programming and a good example of the guest being "under load" is when I am compiling; It is a heavy load of CPU and i/o load.

Two 64-bit Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 comments behave in this way, even if a Windows 2003 R2 plu prompt does not work.

The virtual machines are configured with 2 GB or 4 GB, which is set to adapt to the host (who has much free). Virtual machines and disks are on one of the the two SSD drives. They are both configured to monitor several. In both cases, there is a virtual primary 60GB, preeallocated and no split disk and a virtual disk of 10 GB, allocated in advance, do not divide and define it as independent.

I tried a number of settings, including having acceleration 3D on and out, manually replacing the CPU virtualization settings in VMWare and I tried all the following settings (together) and of which none have solved the problem:

svga.vramSize = 134217728

mainMem.useNamedFile = "FALSE".

sched.mem.pshare.Enable = "FALSE".

prefvmx.useRecommendedLockedMemSize = 'TRUE '.

mainmem.backing = 'swap '.

insulation. Tools.Unity.Disable = 'TRUE '.

If I connect via RDP to these machines, rather than using the workstation console, I do not understand the problem and there is not any particularly notable slowdown in performance

I had this behavior earlier in 9 work stations, but the upgrade to 10 did not make a difference.

Someone at - it recommendations for investigating or fixing this problem - it renders useless VMs for software development which is their main purpose?

Thanks in advance for any advice or help.

My host system is as follows:

Mobo: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO

CPU: Intel i7 2600 K

RAM: 16 GB

Video: Nvidia 580 for 2 monitors, integrated Intel SandyBridge third.

HARD drive: the hosts to the Samsung 840 Pro SSD, SSD Crucial M225 CT128, Western Digital 2 TB HARD drive

SE host: Windows 7 x 64

Thanks to Keith Lammers in this thread on the site of DisplayFusion.

It seems that the activation of the option of the processor affinity in the Fusion Advanced Setttings display makes the disappearance of the problem.

    Since neither updates Jan - 10 have installed, I'm going to hand you Support MS in the hope that they can resolve the problem. See below.

    That being said, is an interpretation of the 80070017 - cyclic redundancy check error "a device attached to the system does not work," which suggests that a hardware problem might be the cause of the error (although I must say that it is a very low possibility in this case).

    Good luck!

  • How do I download VMware Workstation 9 VMs and VSphere 5.0

    Hello

    I evaluate VMware Workstation 9 to see if it something that my company could use more our environment Vsphere ESXi.

    Rigth clicking on a VSphere VM shows that Upload and download are grayed out and is not accessible. I don't see any explanation why I can't choose this action.

    What prevents me to do this?

    In both your screenshots it looks you are trying to download virtual machines running - that does not work. To stop them, and then try again.

  • Are there problems in the creation of a virtual machine in VMware Workstation or Server and then move it to ESXi?

    Hello

    I intend to pass our mailserver's current installation of Windows Server 2003 running on native hardware in a Windows Server 2008 running in a virtual machine on ESXi.

    This is the same machine as we will reuse so I would prefer to be able to create the virtual machine on a different computer and test it before wiping Windows and install ESXi. Are there problems with the creation of the virtual machine in VMware Server and then migrate to ESXi using VMware Converter? I won't if the result is not a 'perfect' virtual machine that performs as well as if it had been created on ESXi from the beginning.

    All our other VMs were created on ESXi from the beginning.

    Kind regards

    If you are not sure, you can load VMware Server 2 and then install ESXi in it and test your configuration.  Do all this from your desktop (as it is decent).  You can also do in my computer.  A quick google search should give you all the information you need to get something like this configuration.

  • VMWare Workstation 7 (retail version) takes more than 20 seconds to load

    I am new to the community, so I hope I gave enough information background with my problem.

    When I was using VMWare Workstation 7 RC, enforcement would literally load in a few seconds. Because I bought the "expedition" of the 7 Workstation version, the program takes more than 20 seconds to load. However, once loaded, it works fine with virtual machines - but it is such an inconvenience.

    Here are my computer specs:

    Intel Core Duo Quad core CPU, 8 GB of RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 - bit edition.

    Actions I take so far:

    I made a correct uninstallation of the RC, rebooted version and then install the retail version of Workstation 7. I also noticed that Workstation 7 interferes with Ccleaner (by Piraform). When I run Ccleaner, I get "unexpected error" messages and the program will not work correctly. So I uninstalled Ccleaner, but this has not fixed the problem with long load times. I also used the MSCONFIG Utility (such as published in a KB article) and hidden all the MS services and disabled the restrestarted, but it does not resolve the problem, either.

    Today, I made a Workstation 7 unistall and reinstalled Workstation 7, but same problem long loadtime. I am so puzzled as to why the RC version worked like lightning, and the retail version is so slow. All my other applications on my PC load and run fast as lightning.

    Have others experienced this problem? Does anyone have any suggestions, what else can be done to solve this problem?

    It seems you're having some sort of problem with the configuration of the proxy.  Your newspaper IU has:

    13:42:26.768 Nov 02: vmui | -VMware Workstation for Windows: install 7.0.0(-1) = new update = no!  URL = "id ="ws-windows"

    13:42:40.433 Nov 02: vmui | CDS error: could not determine the proxy for the URL https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds (12180)

    13:42:40.433 Nov 02: vmui | CDS warning: could not use file CAP or automatic proxy detection.

    Use a proxy server?  If so, could you try go to control panel > network and Internet > Internet Options > connections > LAN Settings and either:

    A. Unchecking "automatically detect settings".

    B. explicitly specify a proxy server manually

    ?

    Or try running workstation and will change > Preferences > updates and unchecking "check new software components according to the needs.

  • VMWare workstation is unresponsive - start

    Hello

    I have problem with VMWare workstation 6.5.

    I use wIndows xp sp 2 as host operating system and originally vmware workstation has functioned well. Also, I managed to install different guest operating system.

    But suddenly, vmware workstation doesn't work. If I run the application it doesnot start at all. None of the vmware services are running, and if I try to boot, it does not start.

    I didn't do any modification or installated any additional demand. I just Macfee antivirus (which was earlier also) and a few other basic running in background services.

    Yesterday, I uninstalled vmware workstation and tried to install vmware workstation 7, but the installation does not start. Now I can't even install vmware workstation 6.5 and 7. It does not, means nohing comes. Everything else (other applications) works very well.

  • interoperability between Workstation 6.5 and ESXi 4.0.0

    We have a few copies of VMWare Workstation (and I love ), and also have a bunch of VMWare Server 2.0 running.  We are evaluating if we move our VMs to ESXi 4.0 in the VMWare Server environment.

    Big question in my mind is the interoperability between the workstation and ESXi 4.0.  We are a software development shop, therefore mostly use virtual machines for testing of different software configurations.

    Server was ideal for this because we could freely copy VMs autour between our machines of the workstation and servers.

    It seems that, do this with ESXi, to "convert" back?

    I guess my question boils down to "what is required to move a virtual VMWare Workstation 6.5 and ESXi 4.0 machine?"  I tried to copy a few virtual machines on to ESXi in workstation and keep we get an error failed to load the scsi drive if you forgot to import.

    Thanks in advance,

    Joe

    Hello

    You can create the "monolithicFlat" type when you create a new virtual machine you want to pre-allocate disk - then also choose to use unsplitted.

    You can also use vmware-vdiskmanager change existing VMDK.

    It's how you work?

    Oh dear - I guess you won't know that I'm a very experimental user - I like to play with different formats - I'd like to trash the VMs and try to fix them...

    Anyway - during such "employment", I found out how to move between ESX and on the reverse with a minimum of work.

    Result: I use ESX virtual machines inside the workstation without any conversion.

    Only the way on the other side of ESX needs a small edit. But still no need to run vmkfs-tools or converter.

    If you want to I explain with one of your examples.

    Only one condition: diskformat must be "monolithicFlat" = a prealloue piece and snapshots are not allowed.

    Besides - I took notes on that here:

    http://sanbarrow.com/VMDK/monolithicFlat-with-WS-and-ESX.html

  • ESXi 3.5 U3 in workstation 6.5 and server 2.0 installation

    Setup an ESXi server in a virtual machine seems to be a good approach to test and play arround, I thought...

    Compared to the search for a cheap HW to set up a physical ESXi, it should be much easier, I thought...

    I am a beginner with ESXi...

    Looking arround VMware communities and internet it turns that there seems to be so much confusion

    on how to configure a virtual machine as on how to configure a physical server with ESXi!

    What I think about the approach of the VM is the following (which can be useful for others...):

    • Setting up ESXi virtual machine seems to be possible with a few tricks, tweaking the vmx file, etc.

    • VMware Workstation 6.0 and 6.5 so that VMware server 2.0 should support this approach.
      There seems to be some gurus VMware autour, who has set in motion...

    • It should work on Intel and 'new' AMD dual core CPU.
      We should have supported 64-bit virtualization HW and DEP (HW data execution prevention)

    • We should have a 64-bit OS, where we install 2.0 Server or Workstation 6.x, but it is only a requirement, when we intend to run the 64-bit within the limits, no clients?
      ESXi from my understanding is not 64 bit application but a 32-bit, right?
      So it seems useless for an OS 64 bit on our machine.
      If we do so, we need to know, we can only install 32 bit OS in our ESXi server. But this is suffient to test...

    So far so good, let's do it. I'll start with the VMware workstation 6.5 I just got.

    My test platform:

    • AMD Athlon 64 X 2 5200 +, 8 GB RAM, card mother ASUS M2N SATA drives, etc.

    • Windows Server 2008 SP1 Datacenter Edition

    • VMware Workstation 6.5.1 build-126130

    What I did then:

    • Installation of a new virtual machine in VMware workstation with these settings:
      -OS comments: other
      -2 processors
      -1048 MB RAM (have seen comments saying 1 GB is not enough, need a little more than 1 GB)
      -VMware HW version: 6.5
      -10 GB disk, SCSI, persistent, preallocated not (you can also use allocated in advance, if you have enough free space)
      -1 bridged NETWORK adapter
      -3 custom maps (VMnet3), for later use...

    • CD/DVD (IDE): connected to ISO: F:\VMware6.5-VMs\VMware-VMvisor-InstallerCD-3.5.0_Update_3-123629.i386.iso

    • Did not start the virtual machine now but check/add something to the vmx file created:
      -Add the following:
      Monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware".
      monitor_control.enable_svm = 'TRUE' (for AMD, but this seems to be an old not more necessary framework for ESXi 3.5 U3?, not sure so left in it)
      monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = 'TRUE '.

      If you have INTEL CPU, use:
      monitor_control.vt32 = 'TRUE' (for Intel, but this seems to be an old not more necessary framework for ESXi 3.5 U3?)

      -Check the following lines and correct if necessary:
      scsi0.virtualDev = "free".
      ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000".
      Ethernet1.virtualDev = "e1000".
      ethernet2.virtualDev = "e1000".

    ethernet3.virtualDev = "e1000".

  • Then propelled to the top of the virtual machine:
    -L'installation began of the ISO
    - And now he's going very slowly...
    After about 3 or 4 h this typical yellow screen disappears and a black rises!

  • - [F11] displays some strange error messages, see attached screenshot
    -Installation appears to hang now...
    -Oh no, he's just a little (the installation screen initial is again coming (welcome...) Please select CANCEL / REPAIR / INSTALLATION)
    Of course, the virtual machine has restarted but there is no bootable on the boot disk installation?

    It's at least the 5th or 6th attempt to operate, very frustrating!
    Wait for, after all these good and useful, advice I found before.

    Question: Why does close to 4 hours, then ANDS upward with an unbootable installation?

    Anyone has an idea what is wrong?

    What Workstaiton 6.5, which is causing the problem

    Even I did something stupid ot totally wrong?

    What these error messages (see attached)?

    Obviously, they have developed at the beginning of this facility and then it happened.

    Tomorrow will try the same server 2.0...

    Any help appreciated,

    Hans

    What jmattson forgets to tell you, is that workaround for version 0F the AMD CPU is always available in workstation 6.0.x

    It has been removed for ease of maintenance of the code and well... the processor will forever be...

    So you should be able to get ESX running under Workstation 6.0.x

    Another clue is that the families of processors numbers are written in hexadecimal notation not in decimal form as humans like to use...

    We programmers tend to forget that you ignore maybe 0F (hex) = 15 (dec) and only 10 (hex) = 16 (dec)

    So 10 (H) is just family version 16 and you're still on 15.

    Could you try anyway?  There is always the possibility that there could be bugs in the installer that caused the service not be installed and configured properly.

    In addition, when you try to start the service, could check to see if a file pass-# .log is created in the %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\VMware\hostd? (Since you were able to run the beta version on this system before, make sure you check the timestamps.)

    Thanks for any advice in advance.

    If your virtual machine is fully using the 1 GB or RAM, then Yes, you are correct - but remember that Workstation is just an application that runs on your server, so if the virtual machine does not all allocated memory, the application will require all this memory and so you will have more memory available for the physical host.
