VSphere running on the host machine?

Is it possible to run vSphere on my host machine to connect to itself?

I have VMware ESXi 5.0.0 Release Build 469512

It is not possible. We cannot install client vSPhere on ESXi.

ESXi is not a shell or console on which you can install the vSphere Client.

This is how it is designed. The host is dedicated to run ESXi. To manage ESXi, you must connect through a vSphere Client that is installed on a windows machine. Or add a vCenter Server host and manage through it.

  • Is there an api to get the info of the OS running on the host machine?

My server is ESXi 4.1, and I can get this information from the property "name" object "AboutInfo.

But, I can't get the information about the operating system running on the server except the 'osType'.

    However, when I use the command 'uname - a', I can get a long chain, "Linux 2.6.18 vcs - 164.ESX #1 Fri Apr 16 14:57:03 PDT 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux" for example, as a result.

So, my question is that how I can the information of operating system as the above string?

There are a few places to the VM guestOS.

    (1) when you create a virtual machine, you assign a guestOS type based on the list available in the API here - http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vc-sdk/visdk41pubs/ApiReference/vim.vm.GuestOsDescriptor.GuestOsIdentifier.html#asianux3Guest. As you can see, it does not include something on a certain core, just the major release version. If you want to query to see what guestOS "configured" has been assigned to particular VM, you can take a look at its config info here - http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vc-sdk/visdk41pubs/ApiReference/vim.vm.ConfigInfo.html

    (2) now, simply because you have assigned a unique guestOS, this does not mean that it be installed this particular operating system... It's bad because VMware did some things when it virtualizes this comments according to your selection. Another method of extracting the real guestOS leverages VMware Tools, if you have it installed and running within the guestOS, you can extract the BONE that is detected. You can find this information in the comments section that provides details of inside the guest - http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vc-sdk/visdk41pubs/ApiReference/vim.vm.GuestInfo.html. As you can see, not only you can get the information of the OS, but you can get things like address IP, etc.. Remember that this only works if you have installed VMware tools.

Now to give you an example where #2 would give better results than the #1. I installed a virtual appliance provided by VMware, the VM shell or it is configured OS has been set at Other Linux (64-bit) but when you query the information of the customer, the OS reported CentOS 4/5 (64-bit) , meaning that it really works. Again, you get only the type of operating system if VMware he understands and is able to detect it. You won't get details on the kernel version or updates/etc.

If you need this level of granularity, you will need to extract directly from the guestOS. VMware another API called VIX which allows you to execute commands directly from the guest's use case is mainly on the management of comments. http://www.VMware.com/support/developer/VIX-API/

    Hope this helps

  • Connect to a service running on the Virtual Machine

    Hello

I installed the server virtual computer on a Windows Vista-based computer. I have created a virtual machine and configured the Windows XP operating system and certain services is installed.

I can't do a ping to the host Vista the XP virtual machine. But I'm not able to ping for the service that is running on the Virtual Machine host to Vista XP. I have configured the virtual machine to run on the HostOnly network.

    What could be the problem/fix?

    Kind regards

    Knockaert C

If you are pinging by IP address then it work should absolutely check that the Windows Firewall in XP guest does not prevent the ICMP packets that is located on the tab 'Advanced' the Firewall Control Panel applet. No changes to host files is required. What type of network you choose - bridged, host only or NAT. If fulfilled, VMware is fill protocol running on this NETWORK card in the home? If one of the other two, is their virtual network adapters (VMnet *) in the active host and IP associated with them?

    Hi LocTuanTran,

In my opinion you download the 'Standard.js' file for the web hosting server. And also the _skin.swf is required to playback your movie Adobe Captivate 2 generated.

  • Access to content the connection Internet of COMMENTS of the HOST machine

    Hello

I have a Windows XP GUEST VM.

I need to know if it is possible to access internet from the GUEST through the host computer?

I mean, it is assumed that the HOST does not have an internet connection. I need a way to connect OS invited via my USB WIFI to my router. Then set up some sort of proxy server on the GUEST computer program.

Then Internet Explore on the HOST computer, I get the proxy server of the computer PROMPT for example: 127.0.0.1 8181 and it would allow me to surf for the HOST machine through my guest computer.

I saw something similar, so I'm sure it's possible, I don't know how.

I really hope that some VMWare guru on earth would be able to tell me how this delicate thing can be done.

    Thank you guys

I just downloaded CCProxy 7, installed and it worked out of the box, so to speak.

According to the configuration prompt .vmx file that it uses "ethernet0.connectionType ="hostonly"" which by default would be VMnet1 then the host must be configured to use the address IP assigned to prompt only map the guest network which, according to 5. jpg is 192.168.40.128 and you are usin the port of CCPorxy by default for HTTP/RTSP which is 808.  This means serves as a proxy for the host definition should point to 192.168.40.128 port 808.

Also, I noticed that in picture 7. jpg you VMnet8 changed the default settings and seems to no longer be a NAT type adapter and you should really leave VMnet1 and VMnet8 alone and use the other VMnets if you need to configurations custom as the VMware Desktop products may have problems if the default network is not properly changed.

In any case if you do not have this work it would be good to see a screenshot of how you have configured the proxy host settings and exit if ipconfig/all on the host and the guest redirected to a file and attached to an answer.

Copy & paste the following commands, as is, and then press ENTER...

On the host in a command prompt. (Start > all programs > Accessories > command prompt)

    ipconfig /all > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\host_ipconfig.txt"

This will create a file on the desktop of the host named host_ipconfig.txt

On the client in a command prompt. (Start > all programs > Accessories > command prompt)

    ipconfig /all > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\guest_ipconfig.txt"

This will create a file on the client named guest_ipconfig.txt Office

Check the two unpublished files and attach to a response message.

  • Database SQL vCenter that is running on the virtual machine within vsphere

Hey guys, I was wondering how many of you are running your database remote vcenter on a virtual machine inside your vsphere environment? We always ran the vcenter db on a physical remote outside the vsphere group box, but I am considering the upgrade to sql 2008 R2 and I already have a virtual sql server computer running within vsphere.

Pro/drawbacks to be aware of the db running on a virtual machine?

    Thanks in advance

    Kevin

We rotated our SQL database in a VM for a while now.

Some advantages are for example the wide use of HA and the ability to easily extend if necessary resources. In addition, if you use backup as Veeam software a restore takes only a few minutes from a physical configuration.

There are a few things when you have to keep in mind:

-Make sure that your SQL VM database begins before your vCenter (the service does not start if it cannot reach the database), even if it can be fixed manually it might be something you want to keep in mind

-If you use the distributed switches power risk since data is stored in the database, of course there are solutions for this (keep the traffic on a standard switch management)

-If you use HA make sure you modify the priority of restarting HA for the virtual machine (you don't want a reboot suddenly)

I am the great Dell documentation and want to run setup.pl to configure my Vmware Vswitches, then install the DellMultipathing (MEM)

I installed Vsphere CLI on my workstation to mgmt and you attempt to run this command:

    Setup.pl - installation - server = 172.19.0.203 - bundle = dell-eql-mem-esx5 - 1.2.0.365964.zip

This operation fails because there is no data presented to the host still store

I'm in the chicken and egg scenario, I need available storage to be able to connect to the storage!

How to do this? running off a VMA device would be different? (I think VMA runnign out of my workstation management using VMware Workstation)

    Thank you

Looks like you have currently not iSCSI installation program.  The option - install option assumes iSCSI is already running.   You simply install the software.

In the user guide starting on page 7 is the use of setup.pl to configure iSCSI and then install MEM in addition to this.

    Setup.pl - configure - bestpractices - server = hostname [-username = username]

    Hey extreme,

    Welcome to the VMware community.

I suggest you go with a desktop computer with the following configuration

Processor: Intel Core i7 or AMD equivalent

RAM: 16 GB minimum (32 GB would be great)

HD: Buy 2 X 2 to disks. everywhere where it allows it, use a provisioning so that you know if you actually use to the top of the storage.

Alternatively, you can also buy a motherboard of the server with xeon processor and install ESXi directly on it.

  • VSphere Client limit "the virtual machine console.

    Hello

I have done several searches and could not find anything relevant so I thought I'd post the question.

I have ESXi 4.0 running with the installation of 3 virtual machines. I connect to the ESXi 4.0 via Client.exe vSphere hypervisor in windows.  I have a couple of people using the same account. For this reason, we have noticed that, if one of us is connected to a virtual machine, the other person can open the console of the virtual machine also and mess with what they do.  He warns that many people are watching the same virtual machine with the bar at the top of the screen indicating there are now 2 sessions of active console.

My question is: is there a way to limit the client to only allow a connection active console both to a virtual machine?  That way if someone is already logged in / virtual console and a view, no one else can.

I understand that I can create several vSphere client accounts with restrictions on the permission to have each account only have access to a specific virtual machine, but I would like to avoid that if possible. Everyone should have access to each virtual machine... but not at the same time...

Perhaps there is a configuration file (or the customer's option) to limit connections of the console to one (I guess that there is a limit somewhere?).  I found there is a "VpxClient.exe.config", but it doesn't look like this kind of information can be changed here?  If this is something that is encoded in the software I will drop it, but I thought I don't know if I asked

Thanks for your time to answer this question,

    Dan

by default, it is set as 25, but that can be changed.  However, it is on a customer by customer basis, so as far as I know, there is no comprehensive way to do this.

Go to the administration Console. Environment > servers, see you in the column 'Machine' for your soa_server?

Go to the environment > Machines, choose the machine that you saw in the previous step.

Go to Configuration > Node Manager, see you in listening address? May this is the place to be changed.

  • Mounting VM on the host machine?

    Hello

Recently, my trial expired for Fusion Desktop 6 for Mac, but I need to get some files of the virtual machine on my host. I know that this is possible, but when I use the app VMMounter thing, I can't find it anywhere, not even download the FUSE thing helps at all. Please could someone help me out here?

(I use OS x 10.9.3 as host, and my VM's OS x Snow Leopard Server)

The program can only handle set/set of virtual disks. What you're trying to get is a virtual disk to a snapshot.

    And the snapshot is locked.

  • UEFI TBS tool running on the virtual machine

I installed esxi5.0 with setting of the virtual machine to support UEFI BIOS. I tried to run TBS uefi (self-certification tool) on uefi shell but installation stop impossible to copy the file stallforkey.efi. However, on a normal physical machine, I am able to boot to efi shell and can install the tool even without any impact. I wonder why it does not work on a virtual machine. Thank you!

Sorry I did not on this thread in a timely.  I try to help where I can, but it can be difficult to follow all this and make sure that I have the answer to everything.

The driver that you have found is the right, and it seems that you have loaded correctly too.

You should probably just use "reconnect" in the EFI Shell to disconnect our CTS volume FAT file system driver and connect the FAT file system driver that you have installed (which has a larger number of driver version, it should be preferred to our driver)... Then, you should have file name long support on the volume of the SCT.  There is some trick that is necessary in order to obtain the ID correct grip for the command "reconnect", or you can try of "reconnect - r", which will take a little longer to run.  You must ensure that the current the EFI Shell working directory is not on the file system you want to log.

So you're on track with OVMF + qemu anyway, so I just after the above for the sake of completeness, and just in case you find yourself stuck and looking for yet another way forward.  Sorry again once I failed to reply to your message.

    See you soon,.

  • VMTools fails to run for the virtual machine Windows 2000

    My first post.

Just installed VMWare Workstation 8.0 on a Windows 7 64 bit computer and I'm trying to create a virtual machine to Windows 2000 Professional from a CD of Installation. I'm trying to resurrect an old machine from the grave of cyber.

I created a disk image ISO of the installation CD Windows 2000 Pro original and then used the new computer Virtual Assistant to create a new virtual machine from it. Everything was fine, the new virtual machine started using the video driver by default since the installation media. Therefore I could not make any changes to the screen. VM Workstation suggested I have install VMTools.

But when I installed VMTools, installation fails just before she completed displays a dialog box stating "Setup failed to upgrade Windows Installer.

So I have reproduced the same process on a copy of VMWorkstaion 6.5.2 running on a Windows XP-based computer by using a copy of the same ISO image. I installed VMTools and completed the installation successfully. Then I cloned the machine and copied to the first machine. The new virtual machine booted up and I was able to make changes to the screen. However, VMWorkstation 8.0 informed the VMTools was outdated and run it again. When I did, it has exactly the same way as it did before.

Although the new virtual machine created the 6.5.2 VMWorkstation works better, I prefer to have a recent version of VMTools install correctly on this virtual machine.

Does anyone have any ideas or solutions?

I think Win2000 needs to be patched to Service Pack 4 to the latest version of VMware and the VMware tools.
