What is ehtumbs_vista.db and desktop.ini and how and is allowed to delete this item

What is ehthumbs_vista.db and desktop.ini and is it OK to delete and if so how to remove

Thank you

Hello, zoolady

ehthumbs_vista. DB, that's where the Media Center records the thumbnails for media.
Desktop.ini stores the settings for this particular file.

It's good to remove them both, but they will be re-created automatically. They must be hidden by default, so you can choose to simply do not show the files hidden instead.

    What should do to regenerate?

    Hello

Desktop.ini is a file hidden, protected operating system, in some cases, that stores information about the customization of the folder.  Given that the office is a folder (C:\Users\\Desktop), it can contain this file.  It's OK to delete the file.  To prevent it from appearing, go to control panel > folder options and turn off the display of hidden files or system files.

You can also hide system files.

    See the article below:

  • When I start my system, some notifications invites to the top of their own and I still see the desktop.ini file in my documents/files please what this means?

Every time I start my system, the Lync appears, a modem exe shortcut. files also appears, how can I stop this?

I want to know the meaning of desktop.ini, I remove cause it's to show in most of my documents?

Your thread was started successfully in the forum comments, so I moved it to the windows 'Repair and recovery' forum where is is more on the subject.  You must return to your topic and we tell which version of Windows you are using.

Look in your startup folder to see if you see Lync and modem.exe shortcuts in this folder.  If so, remove them and you should no longer see these pop-ups when you connect.

You can get rid of him, but it can return.  Desktop.ini is usually a file hidden, so you must have the display of hidden files and folders active if you do not see it.  Desktop.ini is a file that is present in many files and it is used by the process to "customize the folder.  It allows you to specify multiple behaviors to a folder and what desired icon displayed for a folder.  See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/cc144102(v=vs.85).aspx for a more in-depth explanation of the desktop.ini file.  For certain folders such as My Documents, you should probably leave it alone.  It won't hurt anything especially if you do remove it, but the folder will then behave like any other folder, you can create.

  • What is a "desktop.ini" file and why it is part of every folder on my drive network hard?

I have Windows vista (64-bit).  I have a WD HDD connected to a linksys E4200 wireless router. I created a music network hard disk, and every time I transfer or rip music to this reader, this "desktop.ini" file appear also in the context of each case.  Is this OK to delete this file?

Desktop.ini is a hidden file, use of Windows operating systems to store folder settings. For example, you have created a music library so desktop.ini will contain the settings to indicate to the user interface to display the files in the folder differently from a normal folder. It will also contain parameters of the custom icons and names.

You can delete the file if you wish; point negative only consequence will be the loss of these parameters/customization.

  • "desktop.ini" and some of my folders appear hidden,.

How can I solve the following problem? There is an icon called 'desktop.ini' that is popping up all over my computer and some of my folders appear hidden,

    Hi Merlman,

It looks like your system may still have infected files that are not recognized by the scanning software. If system restore has failed to solve this problem, the next step would be to try to repair all files in Windows by performing a SFC/scannow: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747

Remember that your system may have been corrupted too, and you may also need to perform a repair installation: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964 (it indicates if a later version of Internet Explorer is installed and can apply to your system).

  • I've saved some important images into my USB and they suddenly disappeared [desktop.ini]?

The pictures in my pen-drive are no where. When I see her in my computer, it shows that its almost full, and when I get there is nothing. So I looked at all the hidden files & file system and found a folder named [recycler] with a different file name [desktop.ini] inside. How can I get the pictures seen again... your help would be really appreciated and if you have a software in mind please do not hesitate to mention it. :)

    Hi AbitCraiz,

Welcome to Microsoft Community where you can find all the answers related to Windows.

According to the description provided, looks like you are not able to access the files in the USB. The likely cause of this issue could be due to the virus that hides those files.

I have a couple of steps that should help you to solve the problem.

    Method 1:

Try the steps mentioned in this link and check if you are able to see the photos:

    Show hidden files

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/show-hidden-files

With this try to uncheck these below the show hidden files temporarily and check:

    i. hide empty drives in the computer folder.

II. Hide extensions of known file types.

III. Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).

Note: Once the files are transferred, make sure that the options mentioned above are changed by default.

Note: If you are able to see the files in the USB key, do a right click on the folder, and then click Properties. Uncheck the box hidden in the general folder and transfer the files.

    Method 2:

Run a virus scanner and check:

Virus is known to cause these problems. Scan your computer for the Microsoft Security Scanner, which allows to get rid of viruses, spyware and software malware.

    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expire after 10 days from the date of installation.

Note: The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.

Hope this information helps. In case you have issues with Windows, post here to Microsoft Community.

  • desktop.ini files are showing even after masking the BONES protected files and they are everywhere

Everything is almost described in the title

Out of nowhere this "desktop.ini" file started appearing in almost all of the folders and delete them changes icons of folders where they exist in the settings and I found that the only way to hide them is to hide one in each folder specially after finding that they are not considered "BONES protected files" by the system or it was to hide just after masking "Protected OS files" but cache the one by one is not the best option to consider, although unlike the real "desktop.ini file" in the Users\User\Desktop folder that is considered protected operating system file and mask normally with the protected operating system files.

Now, I want to just hide in a process that is not separately if possible please.

    For more details:

-The content of the original "desktop.ini" file in the Users\User\Desktop folder is different from those non-hidden other those as follows:

    Contents of the Original file:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    [. ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
    IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    No hidden files content:

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    [. ShellClassInfo]
    IconResource = D:\Softwares\Icons\Metro Collection\Metro_Tiles_1\Metro ICO\System Icons\OTHERS\OTHERS\Journal.ico,0
    [ViewState]
    Mode =
    Vid =
    FolderType = generic

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comment: The "IconResource' location changes depending on the icon of the folder where the file exists.

    Hello

I found a link that doesn't address the root cause of your problem, but describes a method to hide the files with an extension of certain... The link describes a .nfo extension, but I think it would work for a .ini as well...

Instead of going into the folder as shown, go to the root of the drive itself...

  • Task Scheduler... What are these tasks and that they planned?

Initially, MSE does scan automatically as I had planned that he... .and then there is two days, he stopped. I have switched between the options [run while you are logged in, but not using it]... and makes no diff.

Then... I looked around and stumbled upon Task Scheduler (that I used to twist a lot during my years XP) and was stunned to see 15 tasks scheduled to run on different times and different triggers... indefinitely. I don't know any of them, and I did not had everything, or the other. I noticed that I slowed down when he was running. Then I disabled all.

48 hours later, my PC doesn't seem different (I expect event catastrophic/s)... MSE is still running is not on calendar (which is quite ok with me, because I decided that I would really rather run it when I want).

Question: What are these tasks and why they operate indefinitely?... .and that at the request of their? And why disabling does not seem to matter? MSE is responsible for any of them?

BTW, registration of WMC would prevent Autostart MSE? (Because on the two failed retirements, WMC has arrived to save)

    Hi Coolnewyorker,

Your question on "that them regular '-the answer is Microsoft.

Scheduled tasks, include the restoration of the system, Defragmenter to Windows, Windows troubleshooting, Windows Customer Experience. You will also find tasks to check the health of your PC. It's to name a few.

With regard to disabling them does not make any difference, you might find that not much, if anything, is actually scheduled for work when you really are on your PC. In many cases, most schedules run at about 02:00 or, in the case of everything Microsoft has planned on my machine, it does not at all simply because my system is stopped when the majority of demand is demand - or at least it used to be. Systematically, I went through them and changed the time when I was online so that information to Microsoft are downloaded - for example files that are created when the PC crashes etc.

About MSE, as most of the applications that run on a schedule, there is a strong dependence on the PC being idle for many minutes before the start of the schedule. If you are running another program, such as WMC in record, the system is not idle, it's registration; so, Yes, WMC record could affect the operation of MSE. What will be appstack and the behaviour in writing during refresh recompose and re horizon balance discovers pool and desktop? have you ever face any problems, your recommendation, suggestion if all?.

Note: I am certainly intend to check it out in my lab environment, but your suggestions and recommendations are welcome.

I'm not sure have been your goal here, but here goes

anyway. When you refresh or recompose a machine, a user must first be disconnected, after that the machine can be recomposed, it's works the view.

If, for some reason, an appstack or an accessible volume in writing is still attached to a machine, if you crop or refresh the appstacks and writable volumes will be spare once the machine has been reconfiguring.

If you remove the device after use and the appstack and accessible volume in writing is still attached, writable volume will be deleted (because it is read/write) and appstack will be detached simply because it is read-only.

  • What is happening in the original file of the photo when I import it in Photos and I have the "Delete after import" box checked?

What is happening in the original file of the photo when I import it in Photos and I have the "Delete after import" box checked?

When organizing photos for Photos for Mac app, I find that the Photos makes "copies" of files within the library of Photos and must reference a file if your settings are such that you do not copy the original files in the Photos app.

Trying to manage the disk space for the Macbook Pro.

The delete after import is available only when you import a device - a camera, card, an iPhone, but not when you import files from a folder on the system drive.

You can delete the local image files of your system drive yourself, once you have imported the Photos and they were copied in the photo library.

I would never use the option "delete after Import. The files will be deleted until you can check if the files have been imported correctly. If you find out later, that some of the imported files are corupted and illegible, it will be repeated o toolate import, because the files have been deleted from the device. Or worse, if pictures should plant a reason any during the import, all the pictures will be lost, if you have enabled "delete after import.
