What is the Scratch disk fragmentation?

I edit TIFF image with many layers that range in size from 50 MB to 90 MB. With only 4 GB of RAM, my system relies heavily on the performance of work for these large files disk. I have a SATA HDD internal nonsystem with a volume of 80 GB dedicated as a scratch disk.

I read that it is important that the work disk is defragmented. I also heard that Macs defragment automatically, less than 20MB files that I think not helps me a lot.

My questions are, does Photoshop CS4 remove/delete the files on the drive to work after an editing session ends and PS is closed and then starts with a 'clean slate' when reopened? Or do all work record drop just stack upward into pieces over time, which tend to fragment the drive working? If so, should the work disk be reformatted (erased) on a regular basis? Thank you.

Fragmentation doesn't matter much on a dedicated volume.

"Scratch disks" tend to fragment if they are shared with other files (the operating system, data files, etc.).

Zero access is pretty random, so defragmentation does not have a big difference.

And if the files are deleted, the disc is not any fragmentation of talk anyway.

Yes, scratch your files are deleted when the application terminates, or even when it crashes.  Absolute worst case, is that the OS will clean up files when the system restarts.

So, if you have a dedicated scratch disk: don't worry about this.

If your scratch disk is shared with the operating system and other pieces: well, if you are concerned about performance, you might want to it from time to time, defragment or buying a dedicated disk...

This may seem extreme, but given the current prices of the hard drive, I think that simply by adding a second drive (fast) would be the best solution and more fast. And even the least expensive considering the time invested to operate on a disk that is simply too small.

Also note that with Windows, fill no matter which drive over 80-90%, even if it is temporary, falls seriously performance for all applications. Fill your system completely drive could still block your system completely.

Material of Baring emits what is the largest disk Windows 2000 Workstation, able to work with 500 GB disks, will be able to work with?

    James,

There are a few things to think about here:

    • NTFS can support 256 terabytes
    • MBR disks can support 2 Terabyte drives
    • Dynamic disks are not limited to the MBR 2 Terabyte limit
If my understanding is that if your drive is formatted in NTFS and you have a dynamic disk, Windows 2000 can support up to 256 terabytes. For more information about dynamic disks, seeworking with basic and dynamic disks.

  • Cannot answer your request because the "scratch disks" is full

When I try to crop a photo I get this message: could not complete your request because the "scratch disks" is full. In fact a scratch disk has 62 + GB and the other has 52 + GB available. Does anyone have a solution for this?

The disks are already full, or the operation you are trying to use more workspace you have available (as if you crop and forget the resolution value to create a HUGE document).

  • Isn't 'permission' to use the scratch disk.

    Hello

    I am running CS5.5 on a Mac.

When I start a new project and I try to put my drive to work, I told myself that I don't have permission and my "documents" folder will be set as the drive working. However, once the first has finished loading I am able to change the scratch disk. Yet, it would be nice to get it working properly.

I tried with a few discs and still get the same message. These readers work very much like the "scratch disks" to the PCF.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. I am just at first of FCP and am trying to learn my way around.

    Thank you.

You entered a resolution in the culture settings, and Photoshop is now resampling the acreage as you asked for it - creating a document too large for your drive to work.   Take the output resolution, or reset the cropping tool.

  • Photoshop does not open because it says that the scratch disk is full

How can I fix it?  The program will not open when I start it.  I start to open and said so immediately scratch disk is full and then closes the program.  How can I fix it?

Without information system, we cannot tell you what exactly is going on. Usuall means what it says - your disks are full or at least not accessible to Photoshop. You could try holding down Ctrl + Alt + shift when you start the program to reset prerequisite information and to define a new location, you should really look into your cleaning system and make room for otehrwise. • Optimization of the scratch disk + video card

My main question is how should I set up my "scratch disks" to get the best performance from first Pro CS5.5, since I can only find generic online advice, but as I think about doing a nvidia gtx470 so I have CUDA for Premiere Pro, I was wondering also which will be the biggest bottleneck for me now... not tough enough or non-CUDA card?

For the issue of scratch disk, I've been Googling like crazy, and all I can find anywhere is everyone says to put everything on a separate hard drive rising like a dozen of HDDs.  It is not feasible for me.  Is there a way I can improve performance with only 2 drives?  I currently have C:\ and E:\ on 1 disk and D:\ on another.  All products are installed in C:\.  D:\ is my normal and E:\ data partition I use mostly for various media, audio clips, etc.  It has been initially set up this way so that I can put my audio projects on D:\ and audio samples on E:\ and have them seek in parallel during playback.  Can I do video work better using these partitions as well?

For the issue of the video card, I have an ATI 5770 and thought the gtx470 for the price and because I do still game if I wanted to.  Unlike the card or the drive working (they are by default at the moment) will make a greater difference, and am I doomed just if I have only 2 hard drives?  I don't want to not really buy more now because of the money and because I have so much space available on both drives.

I'm on Windows 7 x 64 on an Intel core i7, 6 GB RAM, 2 hard drives 7200 RPM, and HD5770.  I work mainly with compressed HD video of DSLR and smartphone cameras.  The default settings, a 10-minute video (720p24) iPhone lasts 30 minutes to return with simple effects and previews are super pixelated, to the point that I can't even use them to see anything.

    In order of priority:

1 get another SATA 7200 drive and lose the partition on your boot disk. Adobe forums: generic guideline for disk configuration

2 increase memory up to 12 GB or more. See http://ppbm5.com/Background.html

  • What is the /Scratch file and what is it used for 4.1

First I want to thank all the people in the community of VMware for all knowledge/help/tips and tricks, these forums provide. The help you provide has been invaluable for me a novice of VMware!

I studied for my VCP 4.1 and read a wealth of information for the review and sometimes met with the limited information about the partition /scratch. I searched everywhere for an answer or an explanation as to what this partition is for and if it is necessary, but there is nothing in the documentation for VMware 4.1 on it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Welcome to the communities.

It is used for the dumping of vm-support and upgrades or at least upgrades will fail unless I have create a. Installation of the USB/SD does not create one because there is no local disk in support. With USB / SD install you must manually create one usually on a data store.

  • New installation, error: failed to create the Scratch disk: disk error

Location: Windows 7, had everything works fine. Added the SSD and installed system from scratch on the SSD. Old drive now is my second drive.

Try to work on the second (old) drive drive to reduce wear to the SSD. But whenever I do, I get disk error message and it erases all my settings (so boring!)

I think it's a permissions thing since I had to deal with this already to a certain extent, but I don't know how to solve this problem, because I do not know where adobe tries to save the file. Any tips or ideas?

RESOLVED: I mess with permissions, but I think that what he did was following some advice I found elsewhere related to problems of registry Illustrator. I did the settings to change, then I found Photoshop in the start menu and right click > run as administrator. That seems to have done the trick.

  • No linked smart objects are loaded in the RAM of the Scratch disk or storage?

Building a computer and I need to know where to invest.

If a graphic artist made use of the dynamic in a file objects, and then when they "open" one of these smart objects, will be that load into memory (assuming that it has enough memory allocated), the disk scratch or - given that the dynamic object is 'stored' in the original file - the file work constantly read and writing directly from the drive the main file is saved to?

I'm certainly not an expert but I understand that Photoshop has always the image in RAM to be able to work on it. (SO or something else)  If this RAM is not enough then Photoshop uses the drive working to "expand" the RAM. But even if it is enough will always be used the drive working. That's why most people use SSDS for zero and regular hard drives for storage.

Remember that Photoshop is not the only one who is eating your memory. The operating system and a myriad of other programs and background processes all want their share...

  • WHAT IS THE BEST DISK CLEANER FOR A MIDDLE-2O12 MACBOOK PRO?

I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro 13-inch (OS X El Capitan v. 10.11.2). Up to 8 GB of memory, I improved last month. The processor is Intel Core i5 2.5 GHz. It has a 500 GB hard drive and I have about 417 GB of free space available.

I would like to know which disk cleaner would be the best for me to use? I read on CleanMyDrive 2 and I want to know if it is really as good for Macs as they say it is.

None. Your Mac runs the maintenance in the background for you. The so-called Mac utility for cleaning can cause more harm than good on a Mac. Avoid them.
