What PCMCIA DΘmarrer on Satellite A50-possible?

A friend has an A50 with a broken DVD player that needs a BONE re - install. The BIOS does not boot from USB but does not allow booting from PCMCIA.

If I buy a cheap USB PCMCIA card I will be able to boot from a USB CDROM drive.

-damole

As far as I know that something like this is not possible. In my opinion, your friend must replace optical drive.
You can find it on eBay for less money and the replacement is not too complicated.
Do not also a new. Used one you can get for just a few dollars.

In the user s manuals document you can find a list of all comparable optical disks.

  • Satellite A50 543 - what is the correct BIOS?

    Hello

My friend has a portable Satellite and the internal CD drive is broken and its Windows had a virus and was showing strange behavior I want to install XP to clean. Does not support BIOS current ver 1.2 boot from USB CD-ROM drives. In the support section, I found a worm 1.4 BIOS that says in the description "adds this Bios Update expands the functionality of your system.", not very useful.

The bios file is called bios - 20070808112012.zip for model Satellite: A50, model runs no.:PSA50E.

I know this is probably a redundant question, but just to be sure I can be sure it's the correct BIOS that I am not too familiar with Toshiba naming scheme.

    Hey damole,.

If you don't find this BIOS on Toshiba website for your model laptop is the correct version. I mean why Toshiba has release a bad BIOS doesn t work?

But I searched a bit using Google and I think that it of not possible to boot from USB also with the new version of the BIOS. This is possible on the new laptops and Satellite A50 is old enough, so I think that in this case, you need to replace the CD/DVD drive. Maybe you can get a second hand one from eBay that is cheap.

But if you install XP from a Microsoft disc, a CD/DVD drive isn't necessary. Copy the folder integer i386 to the HARD disk and start the WINNT.exe file.

  • Satellite A50 - starting possible USB DVD writer external?

I have a Satellite A50-11 four years old, I need to format a partition of the hard drive (the one with XP) installed but my DVD burner is broken.
My BIOS supports booting by an external DVD burner? Where it shouldn't, should I have any other possibility?

    Thank you

I doubt that this could be possible

As far as I know the BIOS supports booting from HARD, ODD, LAN and USB FDD (floppy) disk

  • Satellite A50-522: what drives are compatible

    Hello

I have the following problem, could someone help me thank you
I have a toshiba satellite a50-522 and the hard drive seems to be dead

While I was looking to replace.
So here's the question; Where can I find a list of the compatible HDD with the laptop?

    Thank you

    Hello

To my knowledge, Toshiba provides official information on hard drives compatible.
But don t worry buddy. I think I could help a bit.
Always is that the Satellite A50 was delivered with the 40 GB drive HARD IDE (ATA-6)
Therefore, you need to use hard drives that support the IDE!
The SATA drives are not compatible!

Now a few words about the size of the HARD drive. Laptops BIOS supports a HARD drive size limitation and not all HARD drive sizes are supported. But I think 60 or 80 GB would be compatible so just testing everything.

    Best regards

  • Satellite A50: What disk are supported

    Hello

my hard drive seems to be broken and I would change it.
Which hard drive I can use for my Toshiba Satellite series A 50?
The former was about 60 GB.

Is it difficult to change the hard disk laptop? I have experience with
    PC, but not with laptops.

The one who (HDD) should I buy?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello

I m an owner of the Satellite A50. It s unit a bit old but I used only as a portable backup and second.
In any case, I updated the notebook with 100 GB HARD drive! It works!
So I guess you can also use a 100 GB HARD drive, but please take a look at the HARD drive interface.
It is important that the HARD disk supports the good interface. To my knowledge, the HARD must drive supports improved interface IDE (ATA-6)!

    Hello

What model you exactly (for example, I am very interested in Satellite A50-111). But anyway if your mobile is correctly installed since your recovery CD or DVD it should be no problem.

Please check in Device Manager if there is some hardware problems with your DVD/CD drive. You have a DVD Super Multi drive and it is possible to burn them all.

Have you installed a software burn? Have you tried to format the DVD - RW, DVD + RW and DVD - RAM?
    What are your tried exactly?

  • Blue screen more often (Satellite A50-111)

Hello. My laptop (satellite A50-111) stops with a blue screen. Sometimes when that I start the computer, sometimes, when I'm trying to play a video file, sometimes... I can't understand why... The error messages are inconsistent. They are different all the time (for example: SPECIAL_POOL_DETECTED_MEMORY_CORRUPTION or PFN_LIST_CORRUPT or PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGE_AREA or something with IRQ LESS THAN EQUAL etc.).

I suspect that the problem is the graphics card or RAM memory. It is because the file ialmdnt5.dll and ialmdev5.dll were mentioned in the error screens).

I ran a test of memory from a CD bootable (memtest-86) and everything seems to be fine with the memory. However, the memory is not the original one. I did a brief day when I bought the laptop (the memory is TMC - 2 x 512 MB)

Any ideas what the problem might be. The problem is that I have these blue screens more often (I've had them several times before but now I have at least one per day)

    Any ideas/suggestions?

    Thank you.

More info: I ran the test memory Microsoft (in addition to above mentioned Memtest-86). Is it possible to have the RAM ok, but everything just does not work WITH my Toshiba laptop? In other words, is something special on the modules of memory supplied with the laptop (which I have not because I have improved the memory immediately when I bought the laptop). Thank you.

Another relevant info: I used the program "auditor" and this explains why I've been blue screens more often. I turn off, but I have still a few blue screens (not as often as before). The newest one: «...» "Stop 0x0000008E... win32k.sys..." "However, I rarely have the same error message

  • Overheating on Satellite A50 problem

    Hi all

For a long time I've been on the forum, but here I am yelling help me, lol.

In any case, I have a Satellite A50-109 which serves me very well over the past years. It is essentially on 24/7 downloading files and also used to burn them to CD/DVD, most of the time. There was no problem until a few days back when I noticed that it is slowing down strongly. I really think I have a problem of overheating on this one.

Motherboard monitor, notebook hardware control and speedfan all indicate playback of the CPU. Now, my problem is, the fan does not turn on when the CPU temperature is below 65 ° C, and this causes the system really labor and crawl even with the simplest of tasks such as the launch of the windows Explorer. Cold startup the lappy takes only about a minute, but with the work lappy for a few minutes and restart it again will take about 5 minutes or more to be usable in any form.

I ripped off by the lappy bowels yesterday (yes I did, and I know what I was doing, lol) cleaned the fan and replaced everything back because they are but always the same. Previously, when I noticed the slowdown, I figured while I got some malware so I reinstall via the recovery CD, but still on the scanning performance.

Now, my question is: is it possible that I can prod the system to activate the fan all the time? Energy saving is already defined in the aggressive cooling method, but does not help a bit.

Sometimes I think to wresting on the fan again and without going through the voltage of the power supply motherboard fan and give it an external power supply to make it work all the time.

Thanks to all who took the time and interest to read and respond to my problems (if any).

    Hello

First I put t understand why put you something about overheating!
    Computer laptop doesn't overheat certainly!
I guess that the laptop does not turn off automatically! Am I wrong?
    So everything is ok!

I read many threads here in the forum and most people don favor t the rotation of the fan continuously.
Anyway, as far as I know the Toshiba HWSetup utility contains an option called dynamic CPU frequency Mode. You can assign it always high.
In addition, you can change the method of control of the CPU in the watch basic settings ask fixed.

By the way: don't forget that there is enough free space around the laptop to the airflow correctly! It's important!

good luck and have a nice day ;)

  • BIOS password? (Satellite A50-111)

Hello. I have a Satellite a50-111 with the bios to version 1.30. Everything works fine. I put a password (which I think is a BIOS password) Toshiba HWSetup and indeed, when I turn on the laptop, I wonder a password until the system starts.

However, I tried to get into the BIOS (at Esc) and I managed to get in without having to type the password. But I thought that the whole point of this password is to protect the BIOS! I don't understand what the purpose of this password? Any ideas? Thank you.

EDIT: Later, I realized that I can start the computer without the password only when I use the reboot. It works as it should when I stop/restart the laptop.
I guess that I partially answered my own question... well that is not clear to me what happens in the following cases: the laptop is off; someone puts is a bootable CD with another operating system (such as Knoppix) and restart the laptop (not arrested...) without the need to use the BIOS pwd. Is it still possible?

    Hello

you need to differ between the two paswords!

There are the user and supervisor pw that are different.
The IPL user protects the system to enter the operating system without pwto. Pw supervisor protects the BIOS!

Normally the pw is requested after each new startup, restart too!
