  "The two region" can only hold x number of icons... Let's say 7.
  If you later open a 8th program, among the list of 7 will be "hit.

  Thanks for the reply... still not sure what happened, but I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling bird t. Everything is back to normal after that. So your solution can work, but I don't have the chance to try it. My solution, but is not ideal, was effective and the problem was solved.

  Don't know how it happened but almost all missing icons... .particularly app icons, iphone apps (phone, safari, music, etc.), taskbar, settings etc., EVERYTHING.   Try a reset of the device. This will not affect your data/content. Hold down the home and sleep/wake together until you see the Apple logo and then release. It could take up to 30 seconds of operation. If it is not everything, try searching spotlight for the settings app. If it is, then open it and try the reset home screen presentation.
