Why has my Inbox & all folders in OE6 disappeared today?

I am completely current with my NAV updates/weekly scans, monthly checkdisk and defrag so I doubt that's the issue.  It was working fine this morning & then all of a sudden, the Inbox disappeared from the Outlook bar & when I tried to check other folders that I created within the Inbox, they disappeared as well.  I do not understand why this happens all of a sudden.  I'm always very careful and do not open emails that I recognize so I BLOCK them before opening a.  If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please be as specific as possible with your instructions or I'll lose me.  Thank you very much.

View | Page layout. Checking: Folder list. All records other than the default folders are missing?

There are two possibilities:

  1. A new OE identity was created.
  2. The entire OE message store was wiped out. Analysis of e-mail can cause this.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In Windows XP, the .dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in the Solution Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder options | View.

Do you see a second identity with another OE folder? It contains the missing files? If Yes, note the location and in OE: file | Import Messages. Follow the prompts and import from this location.

If there is not a second identity, your message store is gone.

Two reasons the most common for what you describe is disruption of the compacting process, (never touch anything until it's finished), or bloated folders. More about that below.

About file Corruption:
http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx

Recovery methods:

If you use XP/SP2 or SP3, and are fully patched, then you should have a backup of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin (or possibly the message store), copied as bak files.

To restore a folder bak on the message store folder, first find the location of the message store.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

In Windows XP, the .dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in the Solution Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder options | View.

Close OE and in Windows Explorer, click on the dbx to the file missing or empty file, then drag it to the desktop. It can be deleted later once you have successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the message store.

Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the * exact * same name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. For example: If the file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named saved. Open the new folder, and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty, continue to the next step.

First of all, check if there is a bak file already in the message. If there is, and you have removed the dbx file, go ahead and rename it in dbx.

If it is not already in the message, open the trash and do a right-click on the file bak for the folder in question and click on restore. Open the message store up and replace the .bak by .dbx file extension. Close the message store and open OE. Messages must be in the folder.

If messages are restored successfully, you can go ahead and delete the old dbx file that you moved to the desktop.

If you have not then bak copies of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin:

DBXpress run in extract disc Mode is the best chance to recover messages:
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/default.aspx

And see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4

A general warning to help avoid this in the future:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They finally are damaged. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.

Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages. • OE6 do appears not all folders

OE6 shows not all folders that I created. I had to force a reboot when the PC hung during the compaction of OE. The "Inbox" folder has been restored, but some files are missing. I removed the "Folders.dbx" file to force the creation of a new "Folder.dbx" file, but only files beginning with the letters 'A' through 'P' are found/generated. Well, my experience is that Outlook comes with its share of quirks, but I get completely where you come from and why you would want to.

I'm glad you do. I'm sick of hearing people who give nothing, which suggests that they will do better when they give Microsoft $150 for Outlook. They get all the quirks of perspective and a Bill.

I personally think is it's the people who think that they will get the best service if they threaten to go to the competitor who really said that. Just as we regularly get people fighting all the way to the support Forum to ask for a phone number where they can talk to a real person of their personal question. I don't know where they think the money to pay the salary of this fictitious person comes. Everything I am is from his pocket and abused.
Perhaps they do not realize that in a commercial sense competitive Thunderbird is simply not there at all.

For the original, poster of this picture, it seems that you are using the add-on for Thunderbird Conversations. Maybe if you have disabled it Thunderbird would work properly like this add-on has a problem with the current version. You can find all you need to do is to restart Thunderbird for the update can fill.

Looking at the site of the add-on I see this

        • Version compatibility *.

Thunderbird 38: Please make sure that you are running the most recent version (2.9.1) of the addon and restart Thunderbird - Thunderbird will allow you to spend 38 without updating the Conversations, giving you a broken configuration
31 of Thunderbird: go to 'Versions' down to install 2.8.X

  • Compacting folders in OE6 seems corrupt

I work to stabilize the system OE6 to my wife before the cloning of a new system and the migration to Outlook. The problem is that OE will ask compact folders to closing it. If I leave it, never complete, requiring a forced nearby. Then the DBX files are corrupt and the messages are lost. (I once had this loss and fear now allow any compacting folders, even if this seems to be required servicing for OE users). As a result, I'm afraid to leave records to compact.

If I can clone OE to another system (of security), then I have matter the OE message store in Outlook (in a PST file) and, finally, bid farewell to OE6 forever.

Any offer of help or pointing me to resources of knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Compaction hangs on Folders.dbx after installation of the SP3 for XP

It is a known problem and will never be solved. As a result, compact your folders manually. The counter will be reset, and a compact manual won't hang it.

Click Outlook Express at the top of the the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work offline (or double-click on work online in the status bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed.

If you have the habit of compaction before 100th closing, (i.e. once a week or more), you will never see the prompt again.

    Hi Laurei,

Thanks for posting in the Microsoft community! You have reached the right forum for your question.

    Method 1
I suggest you try the steps from the following link:

How to modify your folder view settings or customize a folder
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/812003

Note: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

    Method 2
I suggest you perform the clean boot and check if the problem persists.

Note: Make sure that you reset the computer back to normal once the diagnosis is complete.
