  I'm going around in circles at the moment.

  I will deploy windows 2008 R264-bitStandard. I have bought the relevant VL MAK and won't use KMS.

  So the questions I have are:

  When you create a model I should activate the model and deploy?

  As far as I know, this would lead to kick in the activation process.

  Should I deploy and activate?

  I was wondering if someone has managed to create a customization script to prevent the reactivation or automate?

  We do activation at the end for each computer virtual created from the template. keeps things simple for now.

  I moved a Windows 2008 R2 VM from a 5.1 ESXi host to an ESXi host 5.5 using vCenter Converter Standalone.  The c: / drive system passed largely to where I now have to extend the volume.  Is this normal/expected behavior?  Perhaps the conversion/move creates temporary files I can delete?

  This is not the expected behavior.

  Size of the disk is defined during the conversion and which will not increase by its own during conversion.

  Now, you need to V2V, if you want to reduce the volume.

  Here is a good guide, although not for R2, the customization process works the same way.  Create your model, then stop it.  Create a customization specification in vCenter and deploy using that.  The process of customizing VMware will do the rest

  Have a very strange problem. I wanted to apply patches using a VCO on my model R2 2012 Windows workflow and Windows 2008 R2 models. My model of Windows 2008 R2 when converted and started by the workflow VCO does NOT get an ip address. Yet, when I manually turn on the model of Windows 2008 R2 after be converted manually, it gets an ip address immediately. So weird.  There is no problem with 2012 Windows, it works very well. NOTE: The workflow that starts the virtual machine only turns on (and is built in the workflow built by vmware) Finally, today I built a new model and has the same problem. NIC is VMXNET3 and problem seems of course specific OS, has anyone seen this before?

  I checked for available upgrades and you have installed those who came. Can someone help me out here?

  There should be no need to upgrade to vCenter4 just to be able to customize a W2K8 Guest.  We vCenter 2.5 and have no problem.

  I just put in place a new system and I have installed Win 2008 R2, Datacenter Edition on a cluster of ESXi 4.0 host computer.

  Before I installed VM Tools in the comments, I could clone on the model (normal clone). However, as soon as I install the VM tools, I get the error attached almost immediately after the start of the process.

  The other strange thing is that I can snapshot of the virtual machine (using the Snapshot Manager) no problem.

  I noticed other people have had problems with this in win 2003 and I played with the options of VSS in the prompt - as suggested. It doesn't seem to be errors in the event if Viewer.

  Any ideas?

  Hi, I had the same problem, and I solved it install Windows 2008 R2.

  You can try to clone the wen VM that the virtual machine is turned off and this medication would be ok.

  The problem is that the clone when the virtual machine is turned off tried to squiece the guest operating system and which do not.

  Remember that windows 2008 R2 is supported, bat is still experimental.

  See a strange problem with only a Windows 2008 R2 model. When you use the built-in function "Start VM and wait" workflow to start a virtual machine (after conversion from a template either manually, or through workflow) NIC of the virtual machine (I tried VMXNET3 and e1000 times) does not connect to the problem.   All you need to do is build your server as a base, complete, any type of machine and then set it as a model without running sysprep on it.  As the other poster noticed you can deploy model via vCenter which, if you copy the files on the vCenter Server 2008 sysprep (directions on how to do that here - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40_u1/vsp_40_u1_admin_guide.pdf (pg 327)).  It will actually go through the customization process and run sysprep for you whenever you deploy from this model.

  Don't not running sysprep before make you a template also helps because you can change it to a virtual machine, power up, make changes / install updates to it then it switch back to an extremely easy model.  This way your model is always day and ready to leave.
