  • Windows 7 64 bit receives updates for 32 bit

My new laptop runs Windows 7 64 bit and I check the available updates automatically downloaded before I install them.  I noticed that some updates specify 32-bit... and when I read more about the Microsoft Windows 7 update, it shows the same update also for 64 bit and the file is a slightly different name.

Example today: KB982726 update has been downloaded and has written for 32-bit and the name of the file is "office2010-kb982726-fulfile-x 86-glb.exe" but the KB982726 that says for 64 bit has a file name of "office2010-kb982726-fulfile-x 64-glb.exe.

Most of the updates, I've been automatically downloaded do specify 64-bit, but I wonder if I need to start checking all the 32-bit downloads sent to me for a version 64 bit and install instead, manually.

When there is a "64-bit version" of an update... and... since I get other updates to 64 bit, why do I automatically would receive the "32-bit version" of these updates?

If Office 2010 32-bit (x 86) is installed, and 64-bit Office 2010 is NOT installed, updates are appropriate. ~ Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (that is to say, mail, security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ WARNING: MS MVPs represent or work for Microsoft

A1. You should have to do a clean install when you inherited the computer. Since you have not, it's yet another reason to do it now.

A2. If a set of disks came with the computer, there is a hidden partition restore (not to be confused with the restoration of the system) you would use to do a clean install (in Dell-speak, a "destructive recovery"). You will find information about this in the Dell Support Web site (e.g., http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&docid=181316).

Automatic updates of Windows installs KB979683, and then in the next update checking, it is listed under "important update available". He repeated every day for three weeks.

Under 'View Update History', he shows again and again KB979683 installation successfully.

Under 'updates installed, he said, "no update is installed on this computer". So I can't download it manually on my desktop, uninstall the update, restart in safe mode and reinstall manually. Also, when I tried to install manually in safe mode without deleting the file, I received the error 0X8007043c.

I tried stopping the windows update service, and then delete all files in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution > DataSstore and C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution > download, then by restarting the service, but it did not help.

I've updated and run Malwarbytes Anti-Malware 1.46 and AVG 9.0.829, but found no threat.

I use windows, as well as automatic daily scans with AVG firewall (manual scans with Malwarebytes: daily).

I don't know if it's important, but I'm under IE8, version 8.0.6001.18882, 256 bit zero versions updates. I have seen a recent update was available for IE8 (KB982381) but when you try to run manually, he said that the update does not apply to my system.

There is a good chance that you see the effects of a (including a W32/Alureon rootkit) hijackware infection!

    Hi Rocketron,

Sometimes patches seem to just have a hard time to proceed with the installation.  I have a fw for to look you at other things.  First of all, your Background Intelligent Transfer Services set to Automaticand started and Windows Update ? You can check these settings by typing services.msc in the search box of the start menu.

Sometimes in order to get patches to install correctly, you must perform these tasks manually.

    (1) Download Center to visit Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx.
    (2) search for each update code that begins with the letters "KB" and followed by a set of numbers (i.e. KB979309).
    3) click on the link for the download and then click on download and run.  You must accept the agreement and then click on continue.
    (4) repeat this process for each download of updates Windows could not install.
    (5) to rerun the update from Microsoft, click find updates.  If all goes well, it will show that you are completely patched.

If this does not work, try to run the Microsoft OneCare safety scanner.  Sometimes it will solve problems of hidden registry, or erase viruses can prevent the installation of patches: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm. Click full service scan, and then Quick scan (full scan takes a long time to complete). Try the patches.

    Good luck
