Windows 7 on a ThinkPad T42 (2374)

I just bought a T42 opportunity which had Win XP on it and plan to hand it over my oldest daughter. I installed Windows 7 (Home Premium) and work of many hardware components. A little more important, however, not and I spent most of the evening around the area of downloads wandering. No joy, though. The Wi - Fi adapter does not work (this is very important). Windows can't even see that there is an adapter but I know that it is there, because it worked under Win XP. The sound does not work either (important, but not essential). I guess I could buy an adapter USB Wi - Fi, but my preference would be to get the internal working device. What I read here, it seems that determining the correct drivers depends on more than of the model (T42) and type (2374). The product ID of the merits of the case is 2374T 64. Can someone direct me to the correct drivers? Thank you!

Welcome to the forum!

There is no "official" driver for your card wireless (IBM. Atheros abg) but it should be available through Windows Update. The same should true audio driver.

That said, I suggest strongly to go back to XP on this machine, because its graphics (ATi Radeon 7500) is considered to be too low to run W7 or Vista, and there are no drivers for it when it comes to something newer than XP. The graphics performance in W7 will be slow at best for this reason.

Good luck.

  • IBM ThinkPad T42 would not connect to my home network secure wireless

Configuration IP of Windows __An internal error has occurred: a device attached to the system is not functioning. __Please contact support services technical microsoft for more help.

Others have had a similar problem, but I tried the solutions that have worked for them, without success.

All of a sudden, my IBM ThinkPad T42 wouldn't connect to my home network (WPA2-PSK) secure wireless.  It would be either (1) stay in a constant state of "acquiring network address" or (2) do not recognize networks wireless in the range.  Sometimes, it would connect to a nearby unsecured network, but the network would still not appear in the list of available wireless networks.  So I tried to connect directly to the ethernet, which also did not work.  I then ran the ipconfig/all command at the command prompt and got the message:

    Windows IP configuration
An internal error has occurred: a device attached to the system is not functioning.
Contact support services technical microsoft for more help.
Additional information: unknown media status code.

So, I went to Microsoft Product Support Services, which does not seem to offer all the solutions.  I searched this error online and found several similar problems - some users had problems with viruses.  Some users had winsock2 corruption, and some recommended to reinstall the drivers for my network cards.  I'm computer literate, but not a computer Wizard, so I was able to follow their instructions for checking the winsock2 corruption (I think), and I think it's very good.  I did a complete scan of symantec, but who came with nothing.  I downloaded the drivers for my network cards which are: Wireless - 11 a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter, ethernet - connection of a Mobile Intel (r) PRO/1000 MT and was able to update my wireless driver, but not the driver ethernet.  The latter Assistant said we "could not find a better match for your hardware than the software currently installed".  I had wireless internet to work for a few hours last night, even if I still have the same error message when I run ipconfig/all.  I started my computer this morning, and the same problem again - constantly says "address of network acquisition" even if no wireless networks are appearing on the list.  Also, I tried the system restore to see if I could go back before the problem started, but after that I tried several dates, System Restore has still not successful - it wouldn't work again.

So now, I have my computer in safe mode, and it is connected to the wireless internet, even if the ipconfig/all command still gives the same message, and I am running symantec again to see if I can find something!

Please help me!  If you think that I may have missed something with the winsock2 or installing drivers, or if there is something I could not find on the internet, please let me know!  I'll try anything.

Note: I have Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3.
Network card drivers, I'm running are:
    Wireless: Date - 02/05/2007, Version 4.1.2.156, provider - Atheros
    Ethernet: Date - 24/10/2006, Version 8.7.9.0, provider - Intel

    Thank you!

Update: when I disable the Intel PRO/1000 MT driver, I can run ipconfig/all with success.  Then imagine it's something to do with this adapter or the driver.  Any ideas?

OK, so here is what I did to solve this problem.

I've updated to the latest version of the IBM BIOS

Then get the WLAN driver from the manufacturer, NOT IBM, NOT Windows Update. Depending on your card, it will be Cisco or Intel.

I can not stress enough that updates to IBM and Windows update does not work and I lost a lot of time. However, once downloaded directly from the manufacturer (new version) worked flawlessly!

  • Problems with the driver after formatting a Thinkpad T42

    Hello

I formatted my Thinkpad T42 since I lived on different issues and recovery software did not work. I was able to reinstall Windows pro sp2, but I'm not able to do some hardware to work.

I downloaded all the drivers for the wireless, but even after I install them I can't use the wireless connection. I tried to follow the steps to update the driver, but it does not work either. Even if I put the correct path to the driver it says that it does not.

    What should I do?

Well, the problem was that I had to install service pack 2.

    Thank you all

  • ThinkPad t42 10 Windows update drivers

The T42 there the driver updates to make it compatible with Windows 10?

The CPU of 2 GHz in a T42 is a Dothan, so you will have no problem installing Windows 10 to 32-bit only, of course, it will boot from USB and he needs to pick up most often when installing devices. I recommend that you use the drivers of Windows Inbox instead of trying to force the very old drivers of the machine with compatibility/manual / installation.

However, with the latest versions of Windows 10, older GPU Radeon Mobility, as in the T4x/T6o series will result in a BSOD if you try to install the older drivers for Vista (Win7 modded). I came across this one a few weeks ago on a T60 and all my methods to have the machine accept old drivers because it failed. You might be stuck with the conduct of the display with the basic display driver Microsoft, which does not support the bases even if and to a proper resolution.

If you have the time and you want to experiment on the venerable T42, I recommend it. It's very fun.

  • HDD problem IBM Thinkpad T42. I can't install NEW Hard Drive and NEW OEM Windows XP?

    Hi all

When I turn on the notebook Windows XP starts up and everything is loaded. But after 5 or 10 minutes, the response is very slow. If I click on any window and try to open any folder, or open internet explore it takes about 1 or 2 minutes to respond. I tried several ways to scan disk and Defrag, but still that are of no use. I also tried 'Difficulty automatically File System Errors' and ' will search for and attempt recovery of bad sectors ", but this problem is still there. Even when I stop it takes too long to stop about 15 to 20 minutes.

When I turn on again NEXT DAY Windows XP starts and everything loads quickly. After 5 or 10 minutes, the response is very slow. This problem occurs for a few days.

I then used "IBM Rescue and Restore" to load fresh operating system. Still the problem does not get fixed.

Can you get it someone please let me know if this is problem of hard disk or something else. I'm guessing it's related to the hard drive.

If it is the drive hard problem how to save (clone) of this old hard drive AGAIN DISK (after buying) HARD.

If I buy the NEW HARD DRIVE and CD/DVD of NEW OPERATING SYSTEM OEM VERSION it will work? Do existing mother board ALLOW to load a NEW VERSION of OS OEM?

    Thank you

Contact the manufacturer of your computer, IBM and ask them to send a recovery disk/s XP set.

Normally, they do this for a cost of $ small.

Buy a new hard drive > Reinstall.

  • T42-2374. WiFi lost after reinstalling Windows XP.

Hello.  I am new to the forum and I am a very basic computer user. I have a laptop that had its hard drive damaged and replaced.  When he returned, he had a strange system of Windows on it, so I reinstalled my version... and that's when everything went wrong.  Now, I can not WiFi.  I went to the device driver and it shows the yellow mark points against ethernet, SM Bus controller, network controller, PCI device unknown (?) modem and video controller (VGA compatible).  When I double-click on them, they say "the drivers for this device are not installed."

I tried to connect my laptop to my PC which has the ADSL connection high speed to try to diagnose or to re - install the necessary software by using the wizard, but I can't seem to connect in this way.  A friend says to try to download the drivers on a key, but I can't find exactly what I need to download.

Maybe someone can help me please?

PS I tried first looking for the forum for a solution, but I didn't get enough of the jargon. Sorry!

  • Windows 10 scheduled for Thinkpad Tablet 8 products?

Can someone close to Lenovo tell us, if Lenovo intends to extend drivers and support for Windows 10 our products of Thinkpad Tablet 8?

Obviously. Microsoft is responsible to provide the Win 10 update, and they said they would free within the first year of existence of all devices on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. That is why it would be appropriate that Lenovo would finally win 10 support for its existing products as well, in addition to their new product preloaded with Win 10 lines. We have several more months to go, so be patient...

  • Problem installing Windows 7 on Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 13 665D817

    Hello

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 13 665D817 without an operating system and be able to install Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (msdnaa version). I actually had the Thinkpad even before and managed to install Windows 7 withouth any problems.

After starting from the USB stick during installation without hard drive is located. To this end, I insert a second usb key with drivers for AMD AHCI Controller Device Driver for Windows 7 and select the directory of win7 64 bit. A driver to install is offered, but after installing it, it seems as if nothing happened. No disk is detected, and I can't continue the installation.

    thx for the help

(by the way, the proposed here spell check does not recognize "Lenovo" - * lol *)

I saw this happen occasionally during installation via the USB port. In my experience, it is when a USB 3.0 or eSATA/USB combo port is present. It does not occur if start you it from a Windows existing, nor happens during the installation of optical media.

There is something that includes ImageX that you can use to install Windows, but that gets a little complicated.

  • Cannot get Plantronics bluetooth headset appears as reading or a recorder in Panel - > sound in Windows 7 with Lenovo ThinkPad

I installed a Plantronics Voyager legend UC bluetooth headset to my work provided Lenovo ThinkPad laptop computer running Windows 7. The helmet looks like a device in the Panel--> devices and printers. However, it does not show as a device in the control--> tabs sound playback Panel or registration.  I need the headset to the playback device for my work-VoIP phone.

I tried to remove the helmet and reinstall, but I can't delete it in the Panel--> devices and printers. When I locate and right click, remove or uninstall is not an option. I went to the control panel--> Manager--> audio video devices and game controllers, which are there and uninstalled. I then unplugged the connector of the headset, and the headset powered off and rebooted. I then plugged the connector UBS back in and turned the headset. The PC began to reinstall the drivers, but the headphones still did not appear in the sound tabs.

I have been all over the internet trying to find a solution to this problem and so far have not been successful. I spent hours on this and it shouldn't be so hard, but it turns out be. I appreciate any help you can provide.

    Thank you!

Thanks for your reply Mann. Here's the answer to your questons.

    1. Were you able to use this helmet earlier on this computer? Answer: Yes, it didn't work and appeared in the reading tabs and the recording of sounds. However, I accidentally deleted it--> sound when I was trying to troubleshoot why I couldn't hear the narration in the course of eLearing played on our intranet via the headphones. I only meant to change the settings so that I could make the speaker/HP the default device. BIG MISTAKE because now I can't get it to reinstall and appear in the tabs of playback and recording.
    2. Have you checked to connect the headset to any other computer, it works on other computers? Answer: The only other computer I have is an Apple MacBook Pro. I plugged the USB connector to the PC and seem to work although I can't do a one-to-one comparison.
    3. You said that Windows has started to install drivers automatically after connecting the headset and the computer restarted after the removal of noise, the video controller and game, was the driver installed successfully? Answer: Yes, but it just does not appear not liked as an option in the tabs of playback or recording.
    4. Other audio devices work fine on this computer? The only other device is the computer speakers and they work fine.

Regarding method 1. I had already installed and run the file MicrosoftFixit.Devices.exe that you provided even if I ran again and this has not fixed the problem.

With respect to method 2. I checked and show disabled devices is checked. The only other devices in playback and recording are speakers/HP and Realtek HD Audio Output 2.

UPDATE! I removed the USB of the headphone connector and plugged into the MAC, and then removed the Mac and plugged into the PC, that is! The helmet now presents itself as an option in the tabs of the reading and recording. Yes! I was able to select it and set as device by default, tested the VoIP phone and it works all! Phew! I was about to give up on the VoIP phone. Thank you.

  • Blue screen when you try to install Windows XP on Intel ThinkPad Edge 520

    Hello

I have a ThinkPad Edge 520 type 1143-B5G with a clean disk and I need to install Windows XP on it, for reasons of inheritance. I read on the pilot of the technology Intel Rapid store being necessary, but this seems not to apply to the 520, only to 220 and 420. The recommended settings are not available on the 520 (nor is the driver itself), and the driver is listed by n/a for the 520 in the list of drivers of Lenovo. But, I always get a BSOD error just as Windows is starting from the installation DVD, after the DVD instructed all pilots, he can think about.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Would BTW - be possible to install XP in a separate partition, main alongside Windows 7, on a drive that already has Windows 7 on it? Or a clean disk is needed for this?

    Kind regards

    / EvA

    Hello and welcome,

What settings are you looking for?  It seems that there is a problem with the mode of operation of HD.  The E520 BIOS has an option to change the SATA compatibility instead of AHCI mode?  You will not be able to install a version of "Vanilla" of XP without adding the correct AHCI driver or compatibility mode.

What version of BIOS do you have?  I see this rather cryptic reference in the BIOS 1.20:

"[Fixes problem] problem reading/writing data to the SATA compatibility mode."

It is possible to dual-boot XP and 7, but the best way to do is to install XP first and then let the 7 Installer put in place the configuration dual-boot.  You would still have the problem of compatibility (IDE) vs AHCI mode.

Ah, lookinng a little further, there is a driver AHCI for XP in Lenovo driver matrix.  The readme file includes instructions on installation.

Intel SATA controller AHCI Driver for Windows

Readme for Intel SATA controller AHCI Driver for Windows

    Maybe you get.

  • Boot Windows XP CD with ThinkPad X 61 problems

    Hello.

I am trying to install Windows XP on ThinkPad X 61 friend, but for some reason, that it shows only a second hardware analysis message, then it turns off and the HD light is solid. Linux is installed on this machine as well. I use the CD player on the expansion dock. SATA in compatibility mode is already set up. I turned to prevention of memory, but still no luck.

What I am doing wrong? Is there something that I am missing?

    Kind regards

    Ian

Good afternoon and welcome to the community.

Is your goal to keep installing Linux to dual boot? If this isn't the case, you may want to "nuke" the HARD drive with a tool like DBAN before running XP Setup. If the dual boot is your goal, I'll have to take a step back because I have little experience with it. The good news is that there is a wealth of knowledge to draw on the community.

    Kind regards.

  • ThinkPad T42 2373

Hi my laptop is down and I had to reinstall windows xp pro, the only thing is that I have a few missing drivers in Device Manager there is a? against:

    Other devices
    ? Biometric co-processor
    ? Ethernet controller
    ? Multimedia Audio Controller
    ? Network controller
    ? Modem PCI
    ? Unknown device
    ? Video controller (VGA Compatible)

I had a search in the Lenovo Web site and downloaded and installed many drivers, but none of them seem work.any help please thank you

    Welcome to the forum!

That you have downloaded and extracted files in the subfolder to Win, now you have to go out there and run the setup... for example, your Ethernet (wired LAN) will be in C > drivers > win > Ethernet, and this is where you will find the installation file to run.

Your audio would be in c > drivers > win > Audio etc etc.

Good luck and we keep abreast.
