------------------------------------------------------------------
If necessary:
Basically, you need to restore default file Associations.
When you double-click a. EXE file, the program may not start, instead, it can open in Notepad
(view the contents of .exe), or you can jump into any other application.

How to change or choose the program that starts when you double-click a file in Windows XP

All the icons and screen menus desapeared start-up; Windows XP.
After that I had "repaired" my PC with "AntiVir" asked me if I want all the files to repair damaged. I clicked 'Yes', the PC has restarted and I was amazed to see all the icons and the menu start disappeared from the screen. So, now I could open only programs from the Windows Task Manager. Please, help me find the way out of this situation. Thank you in advance.

You see only your background image and the wallpaper?Miss all your desktop icons and you don't see the taskbar at the bottom of the screen or are simply missing icons and you can see the taskbar at the bottom?Check the simple things first. Right-click on an open space on your desktop, choose Arrange icons by and make sure the option show desktop icons has a check mark next to it. This will work if you don't miss you that the desktop icons, but still see the Start button and the taskbar. If only you can see your wallpaper background picture and don't see the desktop icons and no start button or taskbar, this means that the explorer.exe program does not run (and it must be running) or the explorer.exe program are usually afflicted. A good way to think about at the moment, it is that the process explorer.exe "is" your desktop. If this is the case, the malicious software in general is preparing. What is your system brand and model? What is your version of XP and the Service Pack? You have a true bootable XP installation CD (it is not the same as any recovery CD provided with your system)?Describe your current antivirus and software anti malware situation: McAfee, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, MSE, Comodo, etc..Sometimes your anti malware program to quarantine (and indeed remove) your file explorer.exe (or other critical files on the XP system) if it finds that the file is infected. The file may really be infected, but you can know for sure and then reconsider your anti malware options.First, you need to get your work desk, then you can solve your problem of potential malware.Of your background image, press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager.Look at the processes tab and if the process explorer.exe is not running, start it as follows:In Task Manager, click file, new task, and in the Open box, enter:%windir%\explorer.exeClick OK and see if get you your office. If explorer.exe is already running in the processes tab, it is likely that the object of the affection and will need to be replaced (which is not difficult). If you notice that the explorer.exe process is already running in the Task Manager, highlight the explorer.exe process, and then click end process to stop and start a new explorer.exe process as described above. If things look right now, your system is still not fixed, but it should be enough usable so now you can fix it.I would start with these scans:Perform scans for malware first, then these scans by operating clean, difficulty of problems:Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs:Malwarebytes (MMFA): http://malwarebytes.org/SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/They can be uninstalled later if you wish. Please report back with information about your system and your results if you need additional assistance.Do, or do not. There is no test.

Had to restart the computer and turned on will not go beyond Windows Vista of the screen blue, not able to see the start with all the icons page
Restore point:
Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.
Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...
Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.

If restore work not and you do not have a Vista DVD from Microsoft, do a repair disc to do a Startup Repair:
Download the ISO on the link provided and make a record of repair time it starts.
Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.
When you have changed that, insert the Bootable disk you did in the drive and reboot.

Link above shows what the process looks like and a manual, it load the repair options.
NeoSmart containing the content of the Windows Vista DVD 'Recovery Centre', as we refer to him. It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows Vista, and is just a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. Technically, we could re-create this installation with downloadable media media freely from Microsoft (namely the Microsoft WAIK, several gigabyte download); but it is pretty darn decent of Microsoft to present Windows users who might not be able to create such a thing on their own.
Read all the info on the website on how to create and use:
http://NeoSmart.net/blog/2008/Windows-Vista-recovery-disc-download/
ISO Burner: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html
It's a very good Vista startup repair disk.
You can do a system restart tool, system, etc it restore.
It is NOT a disc of resettlement.
And the 32-bit is what normally comes on a computer, unless 64-bit.

I use the latest version of Firefox (as of 3 October 2014 impossible to verify what version because I don't know which button to press - see question) on Windows 8.1. I did not close the browser, but all of a sudden all THE icons disappeared. If I click on the blank spaces, functions will continue to operate (for example I can always close a tab), but I don't see what follows: Reload, Home, buttons etc. Bookmark folder icons; No icons on the settings tab; Exe in the upper right corner of the tabs; Favicons.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/tools > Modules > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is the cause of the problem.
- Put yourself in the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/tools > Modules > appearance
- Do NOT click on the reset button on the startup window Mode safe

When I tried to download a portable manual asked me to use Adobe, which I did and then almost all the icons on the PC showed like Adobe. I managed to change this in internet explorer, but it means that everything I try to access ends on e lnk which is useless. How to restore icons to their original state? (I managed to get some of them on the taskbar as a deficiency in the judgment)
The files "program" on your desktop and menu items are actually of shortcuts (for example, . LNK) files that point to the programs or documents. The fact that they are all 'look' like Adobe is because they have become inadvertently associated with the Adobe program.
I've seen this happen when opening a program via a shortcut (for example. LNK file), you are asked what type of program to open it with. After selecting Adobe (or another program) via the Select a program from a list of programs installedand check always use the selected program to open this type of file (circled in red below), the program referenced by the shortcut of origin or document opens in Adobe as it should.
The problem is that now all shortcuts (for example. LNK files) on the desktop or in the Explorer will want to be opened by Adobe and use the Adobe icon to display the shortcut no matter what shortcut was initially intended to open. This is known as a file association and the default icon. The same condition can occur if you have performed these actions 'Open with' on one. JPG or even a. EXE, but the. LNK explanation is much more likely for the items on the desktop or menu.
The good news is that a small free utility was written to cancel the. LNK file association was created. There is also a registry hack to achieve, but I recommend the utility unLNK for its ease of use.
I would suggest using the UnAssoc utility to remove the stray file association. I used to send people on another site to download this utility, but this site has become confused with all the ads and fake download links. I put a copy on my SkyDrive here.Just download, then use the utility to unassociate the. LNK files for the user or globally delete the file type and let windows rebuild a new to the default values.

Hi ashwini_mahadev, I see that this is your first post here. Welcome to our community!
There are several ways to solve this problem. Here's what I recommend to try:
- Try to repair the association by downloading and running these files:
Fix LNK (shortcut) file Associations
and
Fix EXE file associationsAfter you download and run these two links, try using your files again.
- If the problem persists, I would recommend you to restore your system to before that was the problem by going back to just before the problem started. Windows converts this easy and safe. Here's how:
- Press + R to display the race.
- Type RSTRUI and then press OK.
- Choose the date and time you want to restore (it will also tell you the names of all the programs that have been installed at this time).
- Click next to restore your system at that time here.
The best part about this, is that it is completely safe. If you don't like the food, you can cancel it. Or you can try again with a different date. It will not affect one of your personal files/images, it restores only the system return settings to their operational status. If that's really the way the faster, safer and easier to get "back in the market".
- Try to repair the association by downloading and running these files:
