  I got an ASUS laptop and hard drive broke because of my accident to the laptop. I tried to get a product key for ASUS because I have the right to it if I bought this laptop brand new with windows 8, I think. Apparently, the product key is embedded in the motherboard and ASUS can only access. If I had to put a HARD drive with windows on it 8 in there, I guess that it would recognize the product key to this topic because you can't access the product key even if you have a HARD disk with windows 8 it. If so how do I get windows 8 on a HARD drive? The laptop is not a USB key, I am very sad/confused and need this laptop for school. Can anyone help?

According to Microsoft, the key to the motherboard does not recognize the copy of the retail Windows 8.0/8.1 and you will need to use the phone activation to activate your copy of Windows.   Try the following.

  Open windows control panel, open Windows Update, select "View update history" in the left pane and then select "Installed updates" link in the next window.

  Locate the KB2962407 update, right click and choose uninstall.  Once completed, restart the computer, open windows control panel, open Windows Update and select "Check for updates".  You will see the update that you have uninstalled just offered once again - right click and select "Hide update".

  Unfortunately, HP officially supports only Windows 8 for this computer.

  I think that Windows 8 is - by far - the worst operating system Microsoft ever released. Worse than Vista. Worse than Millennium Edition, too. Without a doubt. It is completely unusable and useless on something else that a Tablet, and existing operating systems for tablets are by far better than Windows 8 on this kind of devices.
