How to change the icons on the start menu?
I was wondering if it is possible to change the icons on the start menu, combined with 'My Favorites', 'Control Panel' and others?
Hello
Thank you for using Microsoft answers.
Icons on the start menu is not editable, but you can download and install third-party themes to change the Visual effects of the start menu.
You can use your favorite search engine to download and install themes.
Using third-party software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the use of third-party software can be solved. Software using third party is at your own risk.
You can change the icons of the folders and add images.
Please post back and let us know if it helped to solve your problem.
Kind regards

Some icons on the start menu are missing after a remote desktop session in Windows 7
I use Win7 Pro SP1 and whenever I come back to my office after finishing a session desktop connection to my computer remotely, I noticed several of the icons in the all programs from the Start Menu section changed to default page icons. If I try to open any programs that are pinned to the start itself, it will indicate that the program cannot be found. Notepad and Calculator in particular to keep more victims of this problem.
I also noticed that the audio controller is disabled until I restart.
I found a batch file that will rebuild the icon cache, but this very annoying to have to keep doing it because I have to remote into my computer almost every morning for the daily scrum meetings we hold in a conference room.
Does anyone know a permanent fix?

Restore point:
http://www.howtogeek.com/HOWTO/Windows-Vista/using-Windows-Vista-system-restore/
Do Safe Mode system restore, if it is impossible to do in Normal Mode.
Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.
Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...
Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.

If the above does not solve the problem, repost in the desktop and personalization Forum; the link below:

More of a problem of operating systems XP and how to bind the program files for the new version
My system was not properly initialize (continulally reseting) to repair the fault that I had to make a form of repair of the windows installation CD. I now have version 2 of the windows XP operating system (host1 and windows 2) on my computer. Windows 2 is the version that works (constantly does not restart) ok, but all my program files, documents, etc. are still linked to the old version (windows 1) and therefore do not apear in the start menu. Is it possible to have these appear in the windows start menu 2, so I don't need to reload all my programs and also allow me to remove this old version that has been corrupted and not lose my files and applications. Thanks in advance.
Bill
Hi Bill,
It seems that you have reinstalled Windows XP on a different partition. In this case, you will not be able to use the installer on another.
You will need to reinstall all the programs on the new facility and also, redo the settings.
You can follow the below mentioned article to remove the invalid entry in the start menu.

How to get removed from the start menu programs?
Hello
I stupidly deleted my file of all programs on the start menu (by chance).
He emptied the folder programs on the start menu through Explorer windows as well.I still have access to all of my programs seeking for them or through the program files. How can I rebuild my Start menu to the original WITHOUT reinstalling windows or something like that.
Unfortunately, I can't do a restore because it is configured to do a clean up of all old restore points, and he did it about 5 minutes before the problem occurred.
PLEASE HELP ME!

Links to programs on the start menu appear as "empty" when I run the mouse over them. I've recreated some of them, but it's not the biggest problem of why it happened in the first place. Help, please. Win XP Pro SP3 IE 8.0 Dell Dimension 2400.
Hi RonaldPease,
· Did you do changes on the computer before the show?
· What do you mean by "links to programs on the start menu appear as"empty"when I run the mouse over them"?
· You are able to launch programs by clicking on them?
Perform a system restore and check if the problem persists.

The Start Menu program folder is empty
I was trying to organize my folders in the program file in the start menu. In my effort to move some of the files, a new appeared folder also named 'Programmes', which seemed to be a duplicate in the program file, so I removed it. When I did the menu is empty, so I tried to restore it from the Recycle Bin. He restored some of the files and folders, but none that were originally on the computer, such as the Solitaire and file administration tools. Essentially, I want to clean the computer and reinstall all programs and files that have been on it the day I bought the computer. However, I don't have a CD to do this.
How to restore my Start menu list?
How to get Vista recovery Media and/or to use the Vista recovery Partition on your computer.
There is no Vista free download legal available.
Contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send a recovery disk/s Vista set.
Normally, they do this for a cost of $ small.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In addition, ask them if you have a recovery Partition on your computer/laptop to restore it to factory settings.
See if a manual provided with the computer or go to the manufacturer's website, email or you can call for information on how to make a recovery.
Normally, you have to press F10 or F11 at startup to start the recovery process...
Another way I've seen on some models is press F8 and go to a list of startup options, and launch a recovery of standards of plant with it, by selecting the repair option.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ask them if you can also make recovery disk/s for the recovery Partition in case of a system Crash or hard drive failure.
They will tell you how to do this.
Every computer manufacturer has their own way of making recovery disk/s.

Or borrow a good Microsoft Vista DVD (not Dell, HP, etc).
A good Vista DVD contains all versions of Vista.
The product key determines which version of Vista is installed.There are 2 disks of Vista: one for 32-bit operating system, and one for 64-bit operating system.
If install a cleaning is required with a good DVD of Vista (not HP, Dell recovery disks):
Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu

How to permanently delete a recent list of the start menu program?
Hello
I would like to know how I can prevent a program from appearing in the list of most recently used programs on the start menu in Windows 7 (Pro).
For example, "notebook" is in this list, but I've only start it by double-clicking on text files, never through the start menu. In this way, 4 of the 10 last menu entries are shortened I will never use and that take away space for other, more valuable shortcuts.
I know that I can delete items manually by using the right-click menu ("remove from list"), but I really prefer a way to do this is permanent.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
MichaelHi Michael
I don't think there is a way to accomplish what you describe. There is no way to set this component to "ignore" specific programmes.
I hope this helps.
Thank you for using Windows 7

Last night my computer says something about a hard drive failure
Hi Jazmin123,
1. you remember to make changes to the computer, after which the issue started?
2 are all the desktop icons and lack of start menu?
3. what version of Internet Explorer is installed on the computer?
4. do you see iTunes under installed programs? You are able to open iTunes in the program files directory navigation?
Try the following steps:
Step 1:
Due to Internet Explorer, take a look at the link to the following article:
Internet Explorer Add-ons: frequently asked questions (Applicable to Windows XP)
Step 2:
If all the desktop icons are missing then try the steps from the following article link and check if that helps:

I hope this helps. Can't wait to hear back on your part.
