  The only effective solution is to reset the file preferences... it has been damaged by trying to create a catalog with the invalid jpeg.

  When you have done this, place you and double click on the correct catalog and LR should then start OK.

  This error message comes just out of nowhere I do not install anything or make updates when this issue was raised. I tried to restart the computer, but it did not help.

  I checked for viruses, but none came.

I think that MS calls this Appcrash.The next step would be to advanced recovery, but I'm not sufficiently confident to do it and the problem is only the latter.
