"Windows Explorer is not responding".

Immediately after, and since I've upgraded to Windows 7, I started frequent and temporary system freezes.  Finally, I get a dialog box titled "The Explorer Windows not responding", with three options: restart the program, close the program or wait.  This happens primarily (but not always) after clicking a Start Menu item.  Is this a known issue?  Is there a solution?  Thanks for any help you can offer.  BTW, I ran SFC/scannow utility with no problems found.

It is usually a result of malware (malware: like a virus or worm) that has infected your computer.  I suggest that start you by running a full scan with your virus scanner.  If you don't have (or don't want to pay for updates) Microsoft Security Essentials is free at microsoft.com/security_essentials.

Please let me know how it goes or if it remains a problem after the security analysis.

Yes, easy to replace the HARD drive.
It takes a HARD drive 2.5 SATA for this laptop.

But I recommend that you check the first HARD disk using a tool called Drive Fitness Test... Use google to get this software

Vista and Windows 7 updated drivers love then here's how update the most important.

This is my generic how updates of appropriate driver:

This utility, it is easy see which versions are loaded:

-Free - DriverView utility displays the list of all device drivers currently loaded on your system.
For each driver in the list, additional useful information is displayed: load address of the driver,
Description, version, product name, company that created the driver and more.
    http://www.NirSoft.NET/utils/DriverView.html

For drivers, visit manufacturer of emergency system and of the manufacturer of the device that are the most common.
Control Panel - device - Graphics Manager - note the brand and complete model
your video card - double - tab of the driver - write version information. Now, click on update
Driver (this can do nothing as MS is far behind the certification of drivers) - then right-click.
Uninstall - REBOOT it will refresh the driver stack.

Repeat this for network - card (NIC), Wifi network, sound, mouse, and keyboard if 3rd party
with their own software and drivers and all other main drivers that you have.

Now in the system manufacturer (Dell, HP, Toshiba as examples) site (in a restaurant), peripheral
Site of the manufacturer (Realtek, Intel, Nvidia, ATI, for example) and get their latest versions. (Look for
BIOS, Chipset and software updates on the site of the manufacturer of the system here.)

Download - SAVE - go to where you put them - right click - RUN AD ADMIN - REBOOT after
    each installation.

Always check in the Device Manager - drivers tab to be sure the version you actually install
presents itself. This is because some restore drivers before the most recent is installed (sound card drivers
in particular that) so to install a driver - reboot - check that it is installed and repeat as
    necessary.

Repeat to the manufacturers - BTW in the DO NOT RUN THEIR SCANNER device - check
    manually by model.

Look at the sites of the manufacturer for drivers - and the manufacturer of the device manually.

  • Windows Explorer is not responding or crashes

I was one of the lucky ones with Vista; never had any problems until this past Saturday.  My computer is mainly used for the type of medical transcription.  I do using WavPedal and logging on the computer system of my clients through networks (drive Z mapping).  I also use Microsoft Office 7.  In my sandbox, I generally reduced my access to the patient of my clients files, WavPedal and Office 7.  Usually, 7 Desktop is maximized for type.  Saturday, Windows Explorer started to freeze or does not for a period of time (or at all) when I would switch from one program to another in my taskbar.  It's NEVER happened before.  Any 'gray out' and I gives me the options of closing, restarting or waiting for windows Explorer.  I can usually restart Windows but sometimes programs don't always work again immediately or not at all and I have to sometimes restart using ctrl/alt/delete.  This is not only frustrating, but slowly to the bottom of my productivity.

I have tried EVERYTHING I can think of to solve the problem, i.e. scan disk, Defrag disk, registry, cleaning, removal of old files, all to nothing does not.  ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?

    Thank you

Often, a certain instability in Windows Explorer is due to the defective shell extensions and addons.
Consider using Sysinternals Autoruns or ShellExView. Disable Add-ons and non Microsoft shell extensions and verify the behavior.  If he went, reactivate the disabled extensions/add-ons, one at a time and see if you can identify who may be liable.
Try a clean boot, or boot into safe mode.  The behavior persists?
Any luck you have installed Groove? (Check the entries with Autoruns)
  • Tried to turn off my computer and it froze. Now, the desktop does not load and I get a message saying that Windows Explorer is not responding

    Original title: virus Possible?

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba laptop. The last time I tried to stop it, it froze (got as far as the last screen showing 'close', then didn't). The next time I turned it on the desktop would not load completely (white screen, no desktop icons, accesses start bar) and if I click on the desktop I get a message saying "Windows Explorer is unresponsive. I tried to scan antivirus, but that also froze. I ran Microsoft defender several times, and it always freezes on C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe. While I can access internet Explorer, I can't click on the links that would open a new page (gel once more). Finally I can't yet do a reboot or a full stop. If it's a virus, how can I solve the problem when no anti-virus software is running?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I just moved across the world and have little knowledge of computers (but I'm much less following the instructions!). The last thing I need is for my laptop to be drunk so I can't communicate with the House...

Here's what I use and recommend: (these are all free and very effective versions.)

Avast and Prevx proved extremely reliable and compatible with all I have
launched on them. Microsoft Security Essentials and Prevx have also proven to be very
reliable and compatible. Use MSE or Avast and Prevx, Prevx 3 but not all.

Avast Home free - stop any shields is not necessary except leave the file system, Web,.
Operational network (Script and behavior are also recommended in Ver 6 +).

    Prevx - Home - free

    Windows Firewall

Windows Defender (is not necessary if you use MSE)

    Protected IE - mode

IE 8 - SmartScreen filter WE (IE 7 phishing filter)

I also IE always start with asset if filter InPrivate IE 8.
(It may temporarily turn off with the little icon to the left of the + bottom
    right of IE)

Avast - home - free - 7.x stop shields you do not use (except files, Web, network, &)
Shields of behavior) - double click on the icon in the Notification area - real time Orange - click on the
Shield that you want to stop - STOP. To stop the Orange icon to show an error indicator-
Click on the Orange icon - top right - settings - click on the status bar - uncheck shields you
    disabled - click OK
    http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

Or use Microsoft Security Essentials - free
    http://www.Microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Prevx works well alongside MSE or Avast

Prevx - home - free small, fast, exceptional protection CLOUD, working with other security
programs. It is a single scanner, VERY EFFICIENT, if it finds something come back here
or use Google to see how to remove.

Choice of PCmag editor - Prevx-
    http://www.PCMag.com/Article2/0, 2817,2346862,00.asp

Also get Malwarebytes - free - use as scanner only. If you ever think malware and that
would be unusual with Avast and occasional Prevx running with the exception of a low level cookie
(not much), to UPDATE and then run it as a scanner. I have a lot of scanners and they
never find anything of note that I started to use this configuration.

  • Windows Explorer does not and sound problems

I'm running Vista (home edition) on a laptop and I'm having problems with my windows Explorer. The other day it was working fine and I have updated to service pack 2, after he installed my computer went crazy! My exporer windows keeps "not responding" and whenever he "closed the program" my office went nuts it shows not all of the icons (on my desktop) until I raised the Task Manager and the taskbar kept resetting itself to I don't know what. I would go in the taskbar properties and sometimes he let me check the power, network and sound icons and sometimes it would be grey so I could not. I uninstalled the update and it seems to work very well a bit, windows Explorer still fails sometimes well. What is really bugging me, is that a previous update messed with my sound, so sometimes I have to go into the Device Manager and disable then enable the sound to get it back (the driver is up-to-date). But sometimes the Explorer is not responding so I feel like I'm going in circles! The other problem is that after installing service pack 2 is my computer guard with "unexpected cases" and it still occurs even after uninstalling service pack 2. Does anyone have any ideas what the hell is happening? I ran all my software, adware, spyware viruses and everything else so I know that my computer is clean. It is service pack 2 or is it my computer? Also, I have an idea of what I'm doing, so I'm not a complete fool. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I don't have my 5 cups of coffee yet this morning.

    Hello

    1. do you receive any error messages?
2 has there been any changes made on the computer before the show?

    Method 1:
If this solves the problem, you can run check and the (SFC) System File Checker tool. SFC scan would be a system file corrupt on the computer search and replace.

    Method 3:

If the problem persists you can scan your computer anti-virus using the Microsoft Safety Scanner.

Microsoft safety scanner will help us to get rid of software viruses, spyware and other malicious software.

The Microsoft Security Scanner is a downloadable security tool for free which allows analysis at the application and helps remove viruses, spyware and other malware. It works with your current antivirus software.

    Original title: Signature Collision?

I'm having hard to the installation of a second external drive. I use Windows 7 Ultimate RC. There was a WD 1 TB drive My Book already installed - healthy and works very well. Windows found the disk, installed drivers and reported the new drive ready for use.

Windows Explorer does not see the new drive. Devices and printers shows 2 external drives from WD. Disk Management shows as 2 drives, but the second disk is offline because of a 'Signature' Collision

Each player works very well if it's the only drive plugged in. "Eject My Book" does not work because a program (or more) are to use the player in the background (Windows or Norton).

Error: Windows Explorer has stopped working
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/2694911/en-us

    Note:
    1) data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means there is a risk of data loss.

    2) after the boot minimum troubleshooting step, read the sections "How to reset the computer to start as usual after a clean boot troubleshooting" in the link provided to return the computer to a Normal startup mode.
