Windows Firewall: "Public network" - what is it?

The cropped image is from a screenshot of "Control Panel" > "Windows Firewall".

Watch 'Public networks' above. It says not 'connected '. Huh? I can browse the Internet, while 'public network' means for Microsoft?

1, I seek to understand the firewall rules.
2, I guess the 'unidentified network' is the VirtualBox Host-Only connection to my Linux VM.

3, 'this' on the side of my router is my LAN. I guess that's what Microsoft means by 'private network '.

4, the other side of my router is the Internet.

5, when I initiate a connection, my computer sends a packet to my router (via my ' private network'? How else, huh?). My router it then goes to the Internet (a ' public network'? If the Internet is not a public network, what is?)

If all this happens normally whereas my "public network" is "not connected", then what is my 'public network '?

Thank you.

  • The Windows Firewall blocks network share on Windows 7

I'm currently on Windows 7 Pro x 64.  I use the firewall of Windows of Microsoft Security Essentials and Microsoft.  No firewall AV or additional software is currently installed.  I regularly use the many Xbox 360 to stream media content of this machine on the home network.  In addition, I set up a homegroup to share resources such as printer and fileshares with other machines in the House.  It's all working perfectly until a few weeks ago.  No direct changes to installation other than updates of Microsoft, Adobe (Flash) and Oracle (Java).  Now, unless I turn off the Windows Firewall, my xboxs can not see the sharing machine, and no other network computers can print/share via homegroup.

Currently, discovery network, file sharing of printers and streaming media are disabled and cannot be reactivated.  Check the radio buttons on the first two, then clicking to save does nothing.  I get sent to the network and sharing Center screen, but when I check again options for change advanced sharing settings, the options are returned to the people with reduced mobility.  Media streaming from this screen says it is on (even if this is not the case), but when I select the option to change this, it says it is disabled (which is correct).  By selecting the option to turn on media streaming continuously, does nothing.  I can click constantly with no change.

I ran the Virus Scan free from Symantec online as long as complete system scan MSSE where each is an element, and in each case, the two elements have been removed (for the threat found by Symantec) NPE and (for the number found by MSSE) the MSSE tool.  I also run SFC/scannow and repaired the problem identified.  With two comprehensive analyses of each tool, I am sure that my machine is the threat and corruption free.

In addition, I went through the list of services recommended to 'start' and 'automatic' which was published MANY times by MANY people.  For clarity, I have all these started and set to automatic:

    o computer browser
    o Client DHCP
    o customer DNS
    o network connections
    o knowledge of network locations
    o remote procedure call (RPC)
    o server
    o support TCP/IP Netbios
    o workstation

With all these started, I can not follow the discovery of the network, the file and printer sharing, and streaming media options running.  I also made sure upnp started as well.

I noticed, however, when I disabled the Windows Firewall, all options could be changed and stayed changed.  I added WMP to the firewall allow list and activated the firewall.  All options have yet.  In the firwall outgoing options are all set to allow, if incoming is currently refused saying "block all connections to programs that are not on the list of allowed programs."  It is the default state of Windows Firewall.

Run without AV and a FW is NOT an option.  Specifically, these are tools MS and should not conflict with these simple network features.

What should I do to configure my windows firewall to allow network discovery and file sharing of printers and media streaming and sharing?

    Hi stephanie,.

Thanks for joining us out on Microsoft Community Forums.

Looks like the Windows firewall prevents the discovery network, files and printers, sharing, public sharing of files and streaming media. We will analyze and identify the cause of the problem.

You have a third-party antivirus installed on the computer program?

    Method 1:

    To turn on network discovery

    1. Open advanced sharing settings by clicking the Start button, then Control Panel. In the search box, type network, click Network and sharing Center, and then, in the left pane, click on change settings for sharing advanced.
    2. click on the chevron to expand the current network profile.
    3. click turn on network discovery and then click on save changes. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide
    confirmation.

The article below explains all about the network discovery:
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/enable-or-disable-network-discovery

If any of these responses not solve the issue, let us then run the sfc scan and check if any file system is corrupt. I also recommend to perform a clean boot in order to find the root cause of the problem.

    Method 2:

Use the (SFC.exe) System File Checker tool to determine which file is causing the problem and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps:

    a. open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click programs, accessories principally made, right-click Guest, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on allow.

    b. type the following command and press ENTER:
    sfc/scannow

The sfc/scannow command. analyzes all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with appropriate Microsoft versions.

  • Impossible to activate permanent "network discovery and file sharing" in advanced sharing without turning windows firewall at the wide service.

    Environment:

I have a workgroup Windows 8 pro PC with all updates from Windows update. The PC is connected via WiFi (home) to a router (the same thing happens if I am connected to the router directly via RJ45). It's my "private network (NAT). I have the Windows Firewall is enabled in its default configuration. I use "Windows Defender" as my protection\firewall of virus software.  "When I go to: change options for sharing different network profiles" under advanced sharing options. I try to turn on file sharing and network discovery in the private profile. It shows that "the private sector is the current profile. The radio button lights. However, when I go to the file Explorer / network I got the message ' network discovery and file sharing are turned off. " The network computers and devices are not visible. Click here to change... " I click to change, however when I click to change it keeps returning and gives me the same message. I then go in ""network control and Internet\Network and sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings " and the option buttons in private profile for the network discovery and file sharing are turned off."

If I turn off the Windows Firewall. Everything works. I need to open a hole in the windows firewall for 2 applications was discovered and network file sharing. I opened rather not just blindly ports. However, if this is the only solution, what ports do I need open.

I have exactly the same problem.  (and I'm not the only one. - There are many!) The problem does not lie with the Windows Firewall. If I turn it off, discovery network and file sharing is turned on-tour he turn it back on and its all disabled subsequently and the rest of the way.  I've been round and round the forums of the world looking for a solution but still find a definitive answer. When you try to set up the rules of traffic outgoing/incoming, it appears for awhile until I refresh it and it disappears. Whenever I have the program such as Skype, I have to 'Allow' the program starting the program. However, whenever I restart my computer, I'll have to do the same thing. Programs such as Skype, steam and reflector are programs that need me to be invited. Even turn off my firewall does not work as it will just automatically. Doesn't seem to be a virus, because all it does is annoying me but not really putting myself in danger. I checked my inbound and outbound rules, but it seems that it is just all the default rules as if a reset button is being spammed. I know that a BSOD's happened. I don't really know if it's happened before or after but the BSODS happened when I was watching YouTube but it was a strange BSOD. After dumping all of the physical memory, an error came up saying that the dump file was too small and he was creating a substitute? I waited the BSOD at the end in itself, as usual, but this time he doesn't not so I just forced a reboot and it seemed well thereafter. If anyone of you need a journal, tell me where to find it, but this seems more like a registry problem for me. I'm not good with computers, but I'm not so bad. Oh and if after all this if you did not... I need help please. Thank you :D

  • Restriction of ports by using Windows Firewall in ad hoc network

    Hello world

I came across this new configuration of the port blocking on an ad hoc network by using the windows firewall is enabled on a machine.

I would do this in detail for a better understanding.

System has set up a network with SSID 'Testing' adhoc and system B connects to the ad hoc network created by using wireless network.

System, windows firewall is enabled and created a rule for outbound block 80, 443 ports and it works fine in the system (I could not access google.com), but when tried to access ports 80, 443 B system its not blocked (I able to access google.com) thought that Internet is shared system.

Whereas, when an outbound rule is created in the WF system B to block ports 80, 443, and then his job very well (I could not access google.com)

Is it possible to make use of windows firewall in the system to act on another system B which is connected via ICS.

Grateful if anyone can provide their contribution to help setting up this configuration.

    Thank you
