How com windows media won't play a dvd, even with a decoder, I added this morning?

I'm having the same problem. My computer has Windows XP Professional Office. Media Player 11 is on it. But when I try to play a DVD, it says "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because no compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer" is not Media Player got it own decoder? I don't want to download some other decoder from another provider that I don't know. I got Windows Media Player on every computer I've ever owned and have never had problem reading DVD or something else. What is the problem and how to fix it? My computer has a DVD driver... and yet I can't watch DVDs... makes no sense...

And yes the DVD play on other computers and DVD player to the TV. Not a scratch above. Nothing wrong with the DVD. ANY DVD will not play the computer, with the fact that I have a problem...
And Yes, I am talking about Windows Media Player.

A DVD decoder is not included with Windows XP...
so, we need to be acquired and installed from a third
the party source. If your system has one when it was new...
It would have been included in your OEM software
package... maybe you always for her installation disk.

  • Windows Media won't play a .wav file

got this error message "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the required video codec is not installed on your computer."

    Hi cjln2,

    (a) what version of the Windows operating system do you use on the computer and which version of Windows Media Player do you use?

    (b) this only happens with this particular file or every file that you are trying to play?

This problem occurs if a necessary codec to play the file is not installed on the computer.

A codec is software that uses player to decompress a file before playing, for more information on codecs see the link below

  • Center of Windows 7 media won't play audio or video files

A month ago, everything was fine, but then a wave of updates for Windows 7 has essentially killed my Media Center.  It is no longer sees my audio files and gives me an audio error when I try to access the library.  He sees my video files, but then gives me a video error.  Still, Windows Media Player can play audio and video files.  I have tried a system restore, went into the control panel and or power off the components of the system, ran the command prompt to use sfc/scannow, nothing helps.  Anyway I can just clean the Media Center and download an uncorrupted version?
