Windows Update crashes frequently; requires restart

I run Windows Update a bit now and then to stay up to date. However, WU was strange behavior for a while (months): sometimes it freezes with the window simply stay white and the cursor being the circle of waiting and sometimes it crashes when you click on the updates button control (once again the window is all just white). When this happens, I have to restart Windows - otherwise, I can't WU to work.

The problem is that there is no error message and nothing in the newspapers - WU just freezes.

I installed all the updates and keep my computer clean by regularly running anti-spyware and antivirus. This problem has existed for a few months now and I was not able to identify if I installed an update etc that might have caused this.

I run Windows 7 Pro 32 bit, as an upgrade of Windows Vista Business. The problem WU is the only problem that I have.

Any thoughts?

Thank you!

PBylund,
I would recommend that you go and try the option boot than dmw86 recommended.  After a clean boot, run WU and check that it works, then put your PC to sleep for a few minutes then wake him up and try to WU.  Also, before you try this, you must restart your PC and WU before testing and then talk the PC to verify that the problem is after coming out of sleep.  Let us know the results. • Windows Update crashes when installing patches

    Hello

I have a problem with Windows Update on my computer Windows Vista 25 Nov. November 25, Windows Update told me of new updates and I chose the option to install the fix and the stop in the night and the system has been blocked to install update 3 of 5 for all night and then I had to turn off the system and remove the battery and restart the system. When I checked the view update history after the restart, he says that it has properly installed patches. Then, I have the same problem that Windows update crashes at installation of update 1 x and does not go further.

    Updates installed on 25 Nov:

Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB973688)
    Update for Windows Vista (KB976470)
    Update for Windows Vista (KB976470)
Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB973688)
Update definition for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB972696 (definition of 1.71.222.0)

Updates currently Hung on the system:
    Update for Windows Vista (KB976098)

I don't see the error messages and shows Windows Update just "Installing Update 1 of 2.

I checked to restore the system to the restore point before the Windows Update November 25, but the restore point is missing on my system.

Kindly help me to solve the problems

    Thank you & best regards

    Sirot,
It sounds as if there is something in the way of installation.  First of all, make sure that your system is free of malware\virus infections.  This thread has some great information on this topic: getting rid of malware.   If you do not find infections or even the question after removing them and then perform a clean boot , and then run updates.  Mike - Engineer Support Microsoft Answers

  • Windows Update crashes on 'check updates'.

    Original title: windows updates

I just installed windows 7 Professional 64 with sp 1 on my laptop. I have run windows updat for more than 24 hours, and he always says the updates. I also ran the fix to the tool and the diagnosis of Windows update that said be it resolved 2 problems with no other problems so I restarted the laptop and tried again updates and she did the same thing now (checking for updats) since 7 this morning about 8 hours. What should I try next?

    Windows Update does not work

This is a very common problem lately. The tool the more importantly you need right now is a lot of patience.  Resources Windows Microsoft Update are prioritize the updates of Windows 7 to a very low service level and have been since the beginning of summer 2015.  It is not uncommon that the update of Windows to take one night.

In many cases, the following rather simple and fast process works.

http://answers.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/Forum/windows8_1-update/Windows-Update-problem-error-code-80080008/de8114b5-1487-4B31-9b28-f11974718df1?auth=1  This thread has essentially lists a series of commands that I found generally fixed WU.

Start, all programs, accessories, right-click on command prompt, select run as administrator, OK.  Type the following in the black box:

    1. net stop wuauserv
    2. net stop cryptSvc
    3. net stop bits
    4. net stop msiserver
    5. Ren SoftwareDistribution.old C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
    6. Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
    7. net start wuauserv
    8. net start cryptSvc
    9. net start bits
    10. net start msiserver
    11. pause
    12. Output

Services of type in the text box above the start planet.  Find each of the following items and make sure they are set to automatic: Intelligent Transfer in the background, cryptographic, Windows Installer, Windows Update services.  Double-click on each item and choose automatic.

If you still have a problem, try this.  It will take a long time, but in almost all gets case Windows Update back on the right track.

    1. Download and run the appropriate version for your system KB947821 update readiness tool system.  https://support.Microsoft.com/en-CA/KB/947821 32-bit systems X 86.  X 64 64-bit systems.  This is likely to take some time (may be several hours) because it makes all kinds of resets.  It took 4 hours on a book net last night.
    2. Download KB3102810 directly from the Microsoft web site and install it.  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810. It took 4 hours on a book net last night.

Now restart Windows Update.  Do NOT restart Windows.   Be very, very sick, it will probably take a while.

    From: miranda

I can't get more updates. whenever I do a search for updates the search bar continues to research, he never stops! and then I have to close the browser with taskmanager because clicking on the x freezes the browser.

If you have a wireless router: in the Security tab, verify that you are not blocking tool.

    Possible reasons: -.

1 Internet Explorer temporary files corrupted.

    2. background Intelligent and service not started event log

    3 C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder is corrupted

    4. you need to re-registered some DLLs

    5. you may need to add Windows Update to the Trusted Sites Zone:

    6. the spyware.

    7. the third-party programs running in the background.

    8 ActiveX controls corrupted

    Suggestion 1: -.

Deletion of temporary Internet files, cookies and history in Internet ExplorerTools > Internet Options > general

You'll see Delete Cookies, delete files, delete history of

NB: "delete all offline content", will remove all the files needed to browse websites offline.

    Restart and try Windows Update.

    Suggestion 2: -.

1: Verify that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service is set to automatic and the status is started.

Click Start, choose run and in the run box, type services.msc, click OK

Locate the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service and click to select.

Click Start, choose run and in the run box, type regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll, click OK.

    Proposal 3: -.

It is possible that the contents of the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder has been corrupted, so try to rename the folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution. Click Start, choose run.

In the run box, type services.msc.

    Click OK.

Right-click the automatic updates service. Click on stop.

Stopping the service will take a moment.

    Rename the folder "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution":

Right-click the automatic updates service. Click Start.

Starting the service will take a moment.

Please note that your update history is contained in the "datastore" folder and when you rename the Software Distribution folder, the history is lost, but it is not important. You can, if necessary, copy the contents back to the renamed softwareDistribution.old folder. Losing the history of Windows

    Updates is not important.

    Proposal 4: -.

Some files may have become not saved, and you will need to register them again: -.

Click Start, choose run and in the run box, type regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll, click OK.

    c:\windows\system32\wuapi.dll

    JScript.dll

    MSXML. DLL

    MSXML2. DLL

    MSXML3. DLL

    Proposal 5: -.

Add Windows Update to the Trusted Sites Zone: Please note that the security settings in Internet Explorer must be set to medium or lower for ActiveX files correctly pass to your computer.

Only the Web sites listed in the Internet Explorer Trusted Sites Zone will be affected by the reduction of the security settings. Your current security settings for all other Web sites will remain as they are currently

  • Windows Update crashes at startup

Remember - this is a public forum so never post private information such as numbers of mail or telephone!

Ideas: Windows 7, install Windows updates KB2467023 and KB2393802 and freezes on the login screen, where he goes on to say: "before the computer, do not turn off your computer.

    • Windows Update
    • Freezes at "prepare your windows, do not turn off your computer."
    • I installed the beta version of Internet Explorer. There was an update for Internet Explorer 9, but thought that was the problem, so I removed the beta version. I am now in Internet Explorer 8, but Windows Update still crashes.
    • I already tried to start windows in Diagnostic Startup Mode and have even disabled all startup items, but that did not help as well. When Windows hangs at logon screen, I cold boot my system and restart mode without failure. Here, windows prompts me to this update of Windows has failed and does not change. It restarts after that and my computer works well but then again, in normal mode, Windows installs the updates again and invites me to restart. I'm back to the problem again.
    • Something to note is that I recently installed ObjectDock from Stardock. This is my first update after installation. But since I already booted in Diagnostic Mode and still Windows could not update, I have my doubts that ObjectDock is the issue here.
    Help, please.

  • Windows 7 Home Premium x 64: activation of the service Windows Update crashes my computer after upgrade RAM

A few days ago I had two sticks of 2 GB GSkill RAM by mail. Here's the same brand, model and size as the pair currently installed (obviously). (Sticks alternate according to the specifications of the card from my mother)

After you have installed the new RAM and the computer starts up, it freezes within about 30 seconds of connection. Before installing the new sticks, I had no problem whatsoever.

My first thought is that I sit the RAM properly, then I go and reinstall it. I start, and the same thing happens.

So obviously this RAM must be bad, right? When I take out news, not gel. Ah, but when I remove the OLD stuff and use new instead, I ALSO no gel. So maybe it is not the RAM.

Then I reboot in safe mode. No gel. Interesting. I opened the window 'System' and it says "memory (RAM) installed: 4.00 GB ', which is correct." I opened CPU - Z, and it reports also 4 GB of memory. I run a few hours and have no problems whatsoever. So I say to myself, there must be either a Windows service or a 3rd party service is causing the issue and not the new RAM.

I disable all services of 3rd parties and restart in normal mode. It freezes. OK, so maybe (though unlikely) I have a virus any (I say probably not because I have to) run the module additional firefox NoScript, and set to block all flash, javascript, xss, iframes, etc. - in other words, only allow to my whitelist and B) I have Windows Firewall and running McAffee and updated.). But I decided to first try Windows services for the hell of it.

So I enable only the services that start in safe mode as my reference, disabling the rest via services.msc. I start normally and not gel. Great, then maybe it is a Windows service. I start which allows one service after another without any problem. I get to the bottom of the list and select the Windows Update service. Within literally 10 seconds my computer crashes. Large.

As a validation test, I put all services back to the base line of safe mode and only allow Windows Update. I start normally, and again once it freezes.

Another test of validation, I start with all normal, but disable Windows Update. Do not freeze. I'm going to start Windows Update. Yet once, it freezes for about 10 seconds. So clearly something is in place.

As a third and final sanity check, I remove the new RAM and run a Windows Update. He finds a few optional updates, but not critical. My system is up2date.

My only attempt to solve this problem so far was to backup all Windows Update DLLs (C:\windows\system32\wu*.dll, although I don't know if these are good) and do a scan sfc to replace them with copies of 'good '. It did not work.

    So my question is:

Why cares Windows Update that I have 4 GB of memory installed?

    Thank you

    Jon

    1. I 'upgraded' from the RC of Windows 7 x 64 for Win 7 x 64 Home Premium.

    2. I use McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7.0i, DAT version 6060, Scan Engine 5400.1158

    3 No.

    4. No, I put together this computer myself.

    To answer my previous posts:

I think the USB storage is a separate issue. And.

I think I * may * have solved the problem of origin with one or more of the following (don't know who):

    • Updated the software of the chipset of the card from my mother.
    • Updated HD Windows audio drivers to the recommended ASUS (Realtek) HD audio drivers
    • Updated since Windows installed NVIDIA display drivers for version NVIDIA WHQL.
    • Increased my tRFC (refresh time of line) to 70 52 clocks clocks. Set my GSKILL DRAM voltage recommended by 2.1V. Off the SPD DRAM configuration (I read that ASUS is not entirely based on the SPD and can affect things on its own).

I had WU for 20 minutes from writing this post without a freeze, so we'll see. (Previously, it would freeze within 10 seconds of turning on WU)

  • Windows Update crashes when activated

My computer started as a Vista Machine.  When I got my free upgrade to windows 7 64 bit I started to have a problem of Hanger with in minutes of boot upward.  I traced the problem occurs only when the computer has internet access.  I traced it further the windows Update as a problem when it is disabled the computer crashes is no longer. Update disabled, I am not able to check or download updates from the Microsoft site.

How can I know what is the problem or how I should do next to fix this?

    Hello

Step 1: I suggest to enable windows update and then, check if the problem persists in safe mode with network. Send back the same.

To use a safe mode with network option, follow these steps:

    a. restart your computer and start pressing F8 on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured to start to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
    b. use the arrow keys to choose safe mode with networking to Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and press ENTER.

Step 2: Visit the section below and click the fix it button or try the steps underI would fix it myself.

Step 3: Look for error messages in the event viewer. If you find error messages after return the exact error message so that we can help you better.

Measures to check the application event log:

    a. Click Start.
    (b) in the search box type eventvwr.msc , and then on enter.
    c. now, click Application in the event viewer (local).
    d. now, looking for event log on the right side of the event viewer window.

  • Windows Update crashes to install malicious software update 20 of 23

I was working on a computer, Windows XP Home Edition for a friend who was infected malware and had not been turned on since December.  I removed 135 malware and then decided to do the Windows updates.  Initially, he could get an IP address even when I put a static... I did some research and followed the instructions to recover from deformation of Winsock2.   Then I got on the Internet to make the updates of Windows.

It hung for more than 3 hours on software update 20 malicious 23... I didn't write any extra info - sorry.  I said to cancel updates and went back to bed. 4 hours later he said always Cancel updated so I hard booted the computer.  I couldn't bring up the Task Manager, nothing would happen.

Now when you click on a user, it hangs on loading personal settings or it go to the desktop, but you cannot open Internet Explorer or run programs.  You can click on start running, but if you type a command (cmd, regedit, msconfig) and click OK nothing happens.  If you try to restart in Mode safe mode using F8, and then select Safe Mode it will get as many load windowss\system32\drivers\agp440.sys, then he tells you the computer wasn't shutdown correctly and ask you to select the Mode.  I tried the Safe Mode, Safe Mode with network, Safe Mode command prompt, and I still can't mode without failure.   I also tried the last good known Configuration and that doesn't work anymore.

Finally I put a Windows XP Home CD into the CD player and I got it to boot from the CD Rom it says its inspection system for quite a long time and then it asks you to insert the Windows XP Home Service Pack 1 disc (that's all I had) CD and press.  I hit enter and I'm in a loop.

I can also do a start, stop, or restart, it just sits there.  I have to restart from the CPU.

Any ideas where I'm going from here?

  • Windows Update setting confirmation to restart

    From: pava

Does anyone know how to change Windows Update settings to request confirmation from the user before restarting? I left a very complex configuration of programs in my taskbar, last night, and unauthorized Microsoft stop it wiped out. I'm... Particularly irritated muscle, effectively software

Destroy my work. Don ' t preach backups - it's different. Work remains for days, sometimes weeks before a reboot. I lost over an hour putting it all back.

So, how can I say the big boys they need my agreement before restarting? Thank you.

    From: Tommy Stanley

Disable automatic updates and refresh your computer yourself when you're ready to update.

"Stop unauthorized" Microsoft has been authorized in advance by select you allow automatic updates - your bad - now, you know better. ;-)

    Nice try at an acronym...

Why if someone preaches backups - you were * race * programs - backups are unlikely to help other than perhaps with data generated by said of running applications.  To operate is what you want - but you previously (automatic updates) gave the control of the installation/download and

other measures necessary to carry out said installation far if you chose "Automatic updates".

Now - if you are in a domain and your domain administrators are that your complaint is with for pushing updates and imposed on said reboot you - it's a problem, you can take with them and their parameters for your computer.

  • Windows Update crashed my pc

    Hello

After installing a recent downloaded file in Windows update and restarted the computer, and when Windows Vista is ready to load the files and all of a sudden a blue screen of death appears and automatically restarted again and again even in safe mode, I didn't install new hardware or something

    Hello Shintaro101,

    It would be useful to know what the blue screen message gives you in order to diagnose your problem. To understand this message, you should disable automatic reboot on option of the system at startup failure in recovery. This will be done in safe mode;

Start your computer in safe mode: Press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears

Disable the automatic restart in the event of system failure:

    • Click Start
    • Click on Control Panel
    • Click on system and Maintenance link.
    • Click on the System link
    • In the left pane, click Advanced system settings
    • Locate the Startup and recovery area, click the settings button.
    • In the Startup and recovery window, uncheck the box to automatically restart.
    • Click OK in the Startup and recovery window
    • Click OK in the System Properties window
    • Close the system window

You can now reboot your system and capture the error you get the blue screen. After that you take note of the error, please reply back so that we can help you.

In addition, if you have already created a restore point, you should try the system restore. For the sake of space I refer you to the article about how to proceed.
