Windows Update fails, "returning changes" hangs forever

I seem to have bricked just computer from a friend, unless someone has an idea what to do.  This morning, I got it innocently install 108 updates.  Towards the end of this afternoon she called me to say that the computer had asked to be restarted to complete the update, and it did.  When it restarted, he began the configuration, and then failed.  He said it was back of changes, only not to turn it off and then just hung there for 5 hours.  I came to watch once again, rebooted, it (Yes, I thought was not any returning at this point), I tried booting in safe mode, but it's always the same thing - try to install an update, fails and says that this recovery changes everything as before and then it just hangs.

I tried the system restore on three different restore points, which always goes down with a 0x800700b7 error code.  I can reboot into safe mode command prompt, but then what to do?  The computer does not restart normally.  I looked at a few threads here, but everything seems to be doing an update failed to succeed - in Windows.  I can't get into Windows.  I can't do anything but try the safe mode or watch the blue screen that says that it is.  Please - what can I do?  Other than reinstall Windows and start over (and she needs to be able to save about 400 GB of files before I can do it - so I don't want to do).  Thanks for any help you can provide

Software don't not brick a PC.  At worst, you need to back up files, run of the mill recovery or make the superior Clean reinstall Windows 7 that if it has not been done before would be a big improvement since it seems that the OS is corrupt anyway.

In Safe Mode, type services.msc in start search, disable the Windows Update agent.  Make it work for a while with a few reboots, then turn it back on and set to Windows Update "Check for Updates but let me decide which install."  Install the updates in small groups and if necessary use the Restore Point it creates.

I think due to problems with the restoration of the system which should be the net of security here, I would first run the scans of the infection, SFC and if necessary a repair of steps in troubleshooting for Windows 7 installation to check during the installation.

Was actually able to solve this problem through more research. It turns out that his receiver of wireless mouse and a SD card was stalled the installation program. Hi Zurkon,

Thank you for your update on the issue.

If you receive Windows Update error 80073712 0 x or 80073712, it means that a file needed by Windows Update is corrupted or missing. Windows has tools that can help you solve this problem of troubleshooting. I would suggest trying the following methods and check if the problem persists.

Method 1: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

Method 2: Run the DISM tool

    1. Enter in the right edge of the screen and then click on search.
(If you use a mouse, point to the lower right of the screen, move the mouse to the top and then click Find.)

    2. Enter command prompt in the search box.

    3. In the list of results, slide down on or right click command prompt, and then press or click Run as administrator.

    4. In the administrator: command prompt window, enter the following commands. Press ENTER after each command:

      DISM.exe / Online/Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

      DISM.exe / Online/Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    5. To close the administrator: command prompt window, type Exit and press ENTER.

    6. Run Windows Update again.

  • Configuration of the windows updates failed; returning from the changes

Issue started after an automatic update. I was on a flight and had to put the laptop, so I just closed the lid to sleep there.

Next time, he attempted to restart and was blocked at the infamous 12%. After 15 minutes, he would go to sleep, and the cycle repeated.

After several cycles, now it just goes right to fail... Configuration page. It has been sitting there for hours.

It is a HP Pavilion with Windows preinstalled 8 g7. It came not with a boot disk. The security software is Norton package which is preinstalled. No action to produce a response. I have not put it on the desktop by placing the cursor at the bottom left, impossible to open the search menu and power by going up to the right. Drag to the left or right doesn't matter. F8 does nothing. Windows + R does nothing. I can force a shutdown by holding the power button; turn on/off then goes to logo hp briefly and then I'm back where I was.

2nd question, if I can get in a way the computer to answer, I can install an earlier version of Windows, as W8 does simply not reliable?

If you want to downgrade to Windows 7, you'll first need to check if the manufacturer of your computer offer native Windows 7 drivers, otherwise you will need to think back to the computer and buy one with Windows 8 Pro to give you downgrade rights, buy a computer with Windows 7 installed (HP is running one day 4 for example on Windows 7 computers portable and desktop computers) , or learn to live with Windows 8. As to your question, try to run an automatic repair, or a refreshment resets the advanced form options. You don't mention your computer so I can not tell you how to access these services. See the manual of your computer or your computer factory support to find out how to access these functions. Hope this helps and if you need any additional aid station and we will be happy to help you.

  • KB3000061 Windows update fails to 98%

Original title : Windows 8 Windows 7 upgrade (first update of Windows fails to 98%)

I tried (twice) to upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 8 using a burned DVD of ISO file downloaded from the Microsoft store (a year ago, long story why I do apply now the upgrade), using the option to keep my programs and files and I get to Windows 8 without any problem , but the first update of Windows says you need to install more than 100 updates and downloads all works OK, each of them, don't reboot, and then he said installation fails at startup to 98% applied and starts to recover (delete all updates). How I've frustrated, turn off the computer and restore Windows 7 using the repair CD and my image to my external hard drive backup. Who completes without error, and I'm back on Windows 7 running stable.

In any case, it is a Lenovo m58 ThinkCenter desktop computer, and Lenovo said on their website that it comes with partition recovery of Windows 7 (which is correct) and that Windows 8 will run on this hardware (which I can't prove).

Windows 7 is running stable with all the updates of Windows applied. SFC / SCANNOW runs since the prompt Administrator without any problem. CHKDSK /F is running without any problems. So I don't think that my Windows 7 installation is corrupt.

Should I wait for this upgrade to work? Or do I have to give up the upgrade and return to a clean install of Windows 8, keeping nothing? (Which would have cost me more money, since I did not install media for CD/DVD burning program and other programs provided by Lenovo on the Windows 7 recovery partition). Your advice please.

[Previous title: Windows updates fail 98%]

OK, my Lenovo desktop computer is running Windows 8 Pro 64 bits. All Windows updates are applied.

The only update that failed was KB3000061. According to Microsoft TechNet "KB3000061 configuration windows updates failed, returning changes", this update has no other people who (like me) upgraded a Windows 7 computer to Windows 8. The solution is simply to export and delete a single registry keys, restart and re - apply KB3000061.

A lot of my time spent in getting this computer updated from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Personally, I wish that Microsoft would update KB3000061 so that it deletes the registry key which should not be present, rather than 'failure configuration windows updates, changes the way back '.

Thanks to Chandrashekar.K.B and the XP ROCKS! for the suggestions, I have taken during execution of this update.

    Hi Sandra,.

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

You did it any significant hardware or change software on the computer before this problem?

I understand that you can not install some updates with the error message "failure of configuration of the Windows updates...". ». I can imagine the disadvantages suffered by you and will certainly help you in the right direction to solve the problem.

First place, according to the error message, I suggest you to try the steps in the following article and check if it helps.

"Configuration of the Windows updates failed. Restoration of the changes. Do not turn off your computer"error when you try to install Windows updates

Note: When you use system restore to restore the computer to a previous state, the programs and updates that you have installed are removed.

The question may arise if the Windows downloaded update packages are corrupt. So, if you are able to boot to the desktop with the help of the above article, I also suggest you try the following steps and check if the problem persists.

    Method 1:

Try to run that Windows update utility provided in the following link.

If the problem persists, try the following method.

    Method 2:

I suggest you to use Deployment Image Servicing and Management to fix Windows Update errors.

    (a) open an elevated command prompt. To do this, press the Windows key + Q and type in CMD right click on command prompt in the list and select run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click allow.

    The other post:

Thank you for your reply - but the problem persists - this is mopre complete info.
The system starts well and runs - BUT I cannot now be updated because when I access "Windows Update" it always returns this error message.
Also, none of the messages in your "appliesto" step 2 recommended link will be applied effectively.
As far as I know - we have a standard system and I just ran again ONCE a full system virus etc check - all clean.
Also your "Mr Fixit" was performed several times, but nothing changes.
Because it enters the update process, and then always closes with this specific message (which as I said is NOT in your list of error messages), which SHOULD tell your software writers where is the problem.
This is what is happening in the process of updating before it fails:
    Keep your computer up-to-date
Check to see if you need updates for Windows, your programs, your hardware or your devices.

Get updates of high priority (recommended)

Since it is a Dell computer, chances are a Norton or McAfee free trial is preinstalled. When you have done the clean install, the free trialware would have ALSO reinstalled (but not valid now).  Let's see if the execution of two removal tools & a few tweaks resolves the behavior.

As a measure of protection I suggest that you take the precaution to create a system restore point before editing the registry, to guard against unintended consequences. Select Start, Control Panel, system, System Protection, and then click Create.

Select Start, run, type regedit and press the ENTER key. Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT

As an additional guarantee, right-click on WINEVT and select export on the menu drop-down. Name the file and note the folder where it is located. Then, you can cancel the action later by selecting file import in Regedit and bring the exported registry key.

Now, delete the contents of the WINEVT and restart your computer and try Windows Update again.

  • Windows update fails-G62-225DX - bad startup a factory?

My nephew came to me recently with a G62-225DX HP, concerned about safety.  Given this machine is several years old (recently handed down from his father - I quickly understood why), I was surprised to see she was always being basic Windows 7 Home Premium.  Without SP1.

My first attempt to resolve this was to run Windows Update - no luck - immediately fails with "cannot run - services is not started.  Of course, verification services, yes I see WU and BITS running.

So, like any good tech person, I check in the case where the logs and see various errors, including the constant complaints on the Crypto database being corrupted.

Then, up to be Googling for these symptoms/messages.  I see many people with the same problem and a lot of suggestions on how to fix this (re - reg WU, STRANDS of clear/reset, flush/empty C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, catroot2 flush/empty, etc.).  Even seen one on the Intel hard drive problems due to replace it with a drive of more than 500 GB (this unit still has the original 320).

Spent hours trying all the suggestions there, especially when people said 'Yes, that fixed', nothing helps.

Since it was not something of value on this machine, I decide backup and restore "factory".

Imagine my surprise when, after reset of the image 'factory', it has exactly the same problem - Windows Update fails, out-of-the-box on the right!

I think to myself, it's crazy.  The machine is faulty from the start and everyone was naïve to not get Windows updates, AT ALL!

I even decided to try the Windows Update Checker (supposed to perform before installing SP1) and it fails with ' Windows Update Standalone install encountered and error - 0xc80000247 ".

So, I decided to run through the suggested fixes (from M$, no less) and all of a sudden, that Windows Update works.

I thought, it's fantastic.  He immediately calls to > 130 fixed critical.

After a few hours of download and installed, I restart only to get a BSOD - STOP 6 b - AAARRRGGGHHHH!  Tried to go through Windows restore previous checkpoint but that too fails with a mysterious error.  In addition, many Google hits on the 6 b says that it's a hardware problem.  But he was executed until the Windows update, with nothing in the case where newspapers to indicate hardware problems.

Then, I decided to do a restore from the image of what I started with.  At least it ran, even though she could not be updated.

I no longer dig and see a bunch of updates to the firmware/software for this machine, including the BIOS.  Even saw some strange 'Windows updates' HP.  I thought maybe it was something like the fiasco when the power management update for Intel processors had on machines AMD, thus paralyzing them!  Still nothing - WU still does not work!

Tried again to return to the original image, hoping that maybe to install all updates of office/hardware/driver on a virgin machine solve the problem.  Nope-WU still does not work.  Even went back through all the suggested fixed (saved as .bat files everthing).  Nothing, nada...

So, I'm posting here in hopes that someone has a miracle cure that I missed.

    Hello:

    I don't have a magic bullet...

The same thing happened to me while working on a friends HP 8100 Elite CMT, Windows 7 Pro, HP original image.

Would not install SP1 or Windows updates. I tried every trick in the book and after spending more than two hours, going nowhere, including restore from the recovery discs, I decided to install a plain OS W7 clean add drivers myself using the product key for W7 on the PC.

    It has worked well.

You can do the same thing if you can read the product key of W7 on the bottom of the laptop, and your nephew can't live without programs that was shipped with the PC.

In addition, if you format the drive and just install W7 on current partition, you can probably find the program of the installation files for the programs supplied with the PC in the SWSetup folder.

Here's how to do when you don't have installation of W7 media.

Use the installation of Windows 7 USB/DVD tool to compile the ISO file that you download from Digital River. The link below. You need a DVD or a 4 GB flash drive using the USB compilation method.

Use the product key of windows 7 of 25 characters to activate your installation.

    http://download.CNET.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-download-tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html

Then go to the support of the PC and driver page to install the drivers you need.

Link to downloads ISO of W7 is below. Download the Windows 7 version that is on your product (Home Premium, professional or ultimate) key to apply.

      3. Close the Services snap-in window.
    4. Visit the Windows Update Web site, Microsoft Update Web site, or the WSUS server again, and then download an update.

  • Windows Update: failed. __Code 643 windows Update encountered an unknown error. _ * AND * __I cannot repair Windows 7 with the disc either. My guess is: these issues are related...? __

I have THREE questions which PEUVENT all be linked togther... What do you think?

[I am slot as Windows 7 Ultimate (free upgrade to Dell PC w/purchase) on a Dell 64 bit PC XPS435]
I've upgraded from Vista about 3 weeks ago.

#1 - Two weeks ago I had a problem with the installation of Nero/LiquidTV-TiVo to my PC... (this is also when the problem started).
To get the "Nero" thing figured out, I took the advice of someone on the Forum/Blog of Nero. The person has provided a lenghty explanation how to uninstall LiquidTV completely by removing the registry files... I don't really know what I'm doing in the registry, but everything that I helped my problem of Nero, but I couldn't tell you WHAT I deleted OR if I have deleted any bad subfolders or whatnot!... the next time I started my PC is when the NEW NUMBER is right.

#2 - On my next BOOT, Windows Update has found an IMPORTANT update:

A security update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 for x 64 systems (KB954430)

.. .and it fails every time, it tries to install saying this:

    Windows Update - failed

Code 643 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

"Get help with this error" provides little or no help... but it says this:
     "WindowsUpdate_00000643" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"

All the research I did, the problem seems to be with Microsoft .NET Framework... .and all the solutions I found talking about it, "UNINSTALL all THE .NET FRAMEWORK & REINSTALL" ... I tried and there is no .NET Frameworks listed in Add/Remove, and when I press on ' VIEW INSTALLED UPDATES'... " on my PC it says, "no updates are installed on this computer"... what the _____?

#3 - Today, I thought I would just pop the WINDOWS 7 installation disc and do a repair/upgrade... It will not be upgraded.
He cycles most of the way through, then he Has STOPPED and says this:

The following problems prevent upgrade Windows. Cancel the upgrade, perform each task, (it lists only a SINGLE task), and then restart the upgrade to continue.

    • Windows needs to be restarted if necessary to system files can be changed before you continue.

Does not help restart. He tried 3 times and he ends up doing the same thing.
Is it possible I deleted something out of the register so far here and which is cause of all this?
If so, is it possible to fix WITHOUT doing a new install of Windows 7?
OR... anything can be a problem... Please HELP!

(And please note: I am a first year student college with specialization in computer science... but I just started last semester, so I don't know what I should... yet. - though, I SHOULD have known better than to mess with the registry!) My bad).

Thanks a lot for your time in advance, and I look forward to hear from you!  VikeMike4
