Windows Update installation problem

When I turned off my laptop Windows Vista Home Premium, the system entered into mode "install updates". It has been the installation of update 3 of 8 for more than an hour. The display does not turn off and unplug the machine. The disk led is on continuously.

Do I have a problem? Should what steps I take? Thank you.

Hi jayalan,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers site!

The updates take time depending on the size of the file. If the update has hung so I suggest you hard reboot the computer and see if you can boot to the desktop. If you can boot to the desktop and then the updates are not installed will appear and which will be installed during the next update.

Once done with the step above after starting the computer on the desk. I suggest that reset you Windows Update components and perhaps that should take care of the updates. install the updates by selecting two both than some updates system needs to reboot for the changes to take effect.

Access the link below to reset the Windows Update components automatically.

http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/971058

If the computer does not start on the desktop, then I suggest you to start safe mode and see if you can boot to the desktop. Once you are in the office, do a system restore which will take the computer to a time where it was working fine.

Go to the link below for the procedure to start in Safe Mode and system restore.

  • Windows Update & installation/uninstallation issues

I have a few questions if anyone can help!

First of all, there are two updates that fail to install:

Update for the junk e-mail in Outlook 2007 (KB977839) filter
-Is impossible to install since January 13, 2010.
    -Error details: Code 80070643

    Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB979202)
-A failed in install it since January 20, 2010.
    -Error details: Code 643

I don't have a lot of attention until I noticed that I had problems with other things. And they do not have any relationship whatsoever. But for example, I tired to download Skype the other day, and it failed for some reason any. So I thought that I must have a problem somewhere, and I started to look at things with the automatic updates.

I did some research and for the MS Silverlight question, most of the suggestions were first uninstall it then reinstall it.  First, I tried to uninstall it from the Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.  No luck.  He began the process of uninstalling and then just went.  It is still in my list of programs.  I tried to use a registry cleaner program to uninstall it.  Same thing, but he was removed from the list at the beginning, then after a refresh it showed upward.  Then I went into the registry.  I deleted the key to Silverlight under H_KEY_LOCAL MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall.  No luck.  He still appears in my program list.  Then I deleted the key to Silverlight under H_KEY_LOCAL MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Silverlight.  Same thing.  It appears in the list of programs, but no information was attached to it.  I went to windows Explorer and delete the Program files Silverlight.  Still no luck.  I was restarting the computer after all these different attempts.

Next was to download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. I tried. He started to install then I got a message saying that "Installation ended prematurely because of an error". And I can't do anything else or any other knowledge, I just get out.

When I go to the Silverlight Web site, he asks me to install Silverlight for a better experience on the site.  So it seems that it does not recognize that it is still on my computer.  I tried to reinstall Silverlight.  No luck.  The installation fails, 1603 ID of Message, a fatal error occurred during installation.

So it seems that I'm having some trouble update/install/uninstall programs/files.  I can't do anything with Silverlight as well as get rid or put it back.  I can not install the automatic updates, I can not install the cleanup utility and I can't install things like Skype for example.

Does anyone have any ideas of what can be wrong and how to fix?  I hope it's the root of the problem, what's causing the problems for all these different programs.

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Windows Update installation issues

I just bought a new laptop from HP HDX16 last Monday and I've seen a few problems with the installation of the updates. The ball of the small window appeared on my computer Saturday saying "new updates are available" I clicked on it, looked at 33 updates and 5 of those optional, agreed terms and began to download. After that, they started to install. It is said 'Installation successful' click to restart. When I restart my computer, it displays a blue "Update Configuration" page and gives a percentage... It is 100% and restarts and this black page comes with a number of a number (e.g. today was 0/117000 and when he arrives at 117000 TI clicks away) it then goes to a another blue page goes right to say "step 3 of 3-0% complete". He will be sitting on this page from 20 minutes to an hour, then to a page that talks updates could not be installed. Then go to my home page. After a few minutes the ToolTip appears again on the updates and it's the same 38 updates. He made 6 or 7 times and I can't understand it. What should I do to get these important updates installed?

  • XP hangs on reboot after download Windows Update & Installation

Last Friday (September 16) after installing an automatic download of Windows Update (7 files) on my XP machine - SP3 OS, the restart procedure has begun to restart but "hung" just before the blue 'Welcome' screen, leaving a black screen with the cursor in the centre (cursor remains active). I suspect that a Windows or the files needed to move forward have been corrupted as a check of the HARD drive via another computer reports no problem with the drive.

Finally I used the system provided by the OEM recovery CD to get the machine to boot into Windows, and although all the files that are on my "C" drive are still present, the Windows installation is actually a 'new' version of XP where any of my programs are available. In the root directory, there is now a second WINDOWS folder with the label "WINDOWS.0" that is clearly the source of the software used to initiate the Windows. My questions are:

    1. is there a procedure to "transpose" the old Windows installation in the new facility thus effectively regain its original configuration and my PC?... or

    2. I have to re - install all my software from scratch?

    3. If I have to can start from scratch with my programs I at least transfer my documents and settings (including emails) of the 'old' facility to the new?

    P. S.

I know there is a 'Settings Transfer Wizard"but I think understand that it must be 'run' on a working version of the old installation of Windows first to generate the"file transfer"... it's clearly something that I'm unable to do.

    As an afterthought:

Does anyone have any suggestions why or files could been corrupted because replace this (or these) would probably be the most elegant way to resurrect my machine to its original state?
