Windows XP Professional security updates

Hello world

I'm about to take my laptop on the internet, I have only about 20% of free space on it and want to release some, to play games. It would be nice to remove all Windows updates? and what are those who should I leave on Service Pack 3 if I do?  In the case, I would like to re - connect to the internet after that Microsoft remove the service for XP. Sorry it's a bit confusing, to put it more simply, that updates should stay on my laptop?

Thanks for your help,

Ros

Size of the hard drive (C:\) total (used + free)?

Installations of Windows XP are usually small - 4 GB to 20 GB, I would say, and it would be once you have installed the office suites, the suites of the image, audio suites, various browsers and plugins, etc.

In general - you want to keep all the actual installed updates.

Do a house cleaning and the dust of this hard drive:

Windows XP should take between 4.5 and 20 GB * with * an Office suite, editing Photo software, alternative Internet browser (s), various Internet plugins and a host of other things installed

If you are comfortable with the stability of your system, you can delete the uninstall of patches that has installed Windows XP...

You can disable hibernation if it is enabled and you do not...

When you Hibernate your computer, Windows saves the contents of the system memory in the hiberfil.sys file. As a result, the size of the hiberfil.sys file will always be equal to the amount of physical memory in your system. If you don't use the Hibernate feature and want to reclaim the space used by Windows for the hiberfil.sys file, perform the following steps:

  1. Start the Control Panel Power Options applet (go to start, settings, Control Panel, and then click Power Options).
  2. Select the Hibernate tab, uncheck "Activate the hibernation", and then click OK. Although you might think otherwise, selecting never under "Hibernate" option on the power management tab does not delete the hiberfil.sys file.
  3. Windows removes the "Hibernate" option on the power management tab and delete the hiberfil.sys file.

You can control the amount of space your system restore can use...

  1. Click Start, right-click my computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the System Restore tab.
  3. Select one of your readers (or C: If you only), then click on the button "settings".
  4. Change the percentage of disk space you want to allow... I suggest moving the slider until you have about 1 GB (1024 MB or close to that...)
  5. Click OK... Then click OK again.

You can control the amount of space can use your Temporary Internet files or not...

Empty the temporary Internet files and reduce the size, that it stores a size between 64 MB and 128 MB...

  1. Open a copy of Internet Explorer.
  2. Select TOOLS - Internet Options.
  3. On the general tab in the section 'Temporary Internet files', follow these steps:
-Click on 'Delete the Cookies' (click OK)
-Click on "Settings" and change the "amount of disk space to use: ' something between 64 MB and 128 MB. (There may be many more now.)
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click on "Delete files" and select "Delete all offline content" (the box), and then click OK. (If you had a LOT, it can take 2 to 10 minutes or more).
  6. Once it's done, click OK, close Internet Explorer, open Internet Explorer.

You can use an application that scans your system for the log files and temporary files and use it to get rid of those who:

It ends April 8, 2014 (all support Windows XP, including security updates and hotfixes related to security, it will be terminated).

Important note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

  • Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade to Windows 7 Professional without updating any time for remote desktop

I have Windows 7 Home Premium and need remote desktop.  Can I install Windows 7 Professional (which I already have the disk) on top of Windows 7 HP and keep my current data?  Note that I don't update it any time as each post seems to use this term.

Windows Anytime Upgrade is your only option if you want to keep your personal files and settings. You can't directly in place upgrades using the disc.

Please note that you can not install Windows 7 Professional if the license is currently in use on another machine.

If the license for Windows 7 Professional, you have access to is a retail version update or complete, you can use the product key and the Express upgrade to Windows 7 Edition Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional. First of all, check that the edition of Windows 7, you are upgrading is already enabled (if it isn't, you will encounter complications and that you might start all by performing a clean installation). Click Start, type Anytime Upgrade, click on the option enter a key, enter the key of Windows 7 Professional on demand, click Next, wait while checking the key, accept the license agreement, click on upgrade, wait while the software upgrades, (it may take 10 minutes or more depending on the if updates are required) your computer restarts automatically, after the reboot, Windows 7 will notify you updating the computer, the computer will restart once more automatically and will be completed the upgrade, a window will appear notifying the upgrade was successful and your computer is ready to use, click Close, you should be upgraded to Windows 7 Professional your files, programs and settings retained.

Please note that the Express upgrade does not support OEM, MSDN-Academic, Volume (the student faculty licenses) license. If you are in possession of all these brackets, you will need to save and do a custom clean install. If you want to do it, please backup your Windows 7 Home Premium or according to edition currently installed. Some licenses for Windows distributed to tertiary level students are not perpetual, which means that you cannot continue to use the software after a course or graduating.

If at any time the upgrade fails, Windows Anytime Upgrade Fail:

Shut down and restart your computer.

Make sure that the Windows updates have been installed.

Download the hotfix that contains a tool called CheckSUR, this tool will look in the package and the maintenance of records and fix corrupted data, the tool is listed under kb947821 it is located at the following link http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=947821

If Anytime Upgrade still does not work, turn off the user account control:

    1. go in user accounts in Control Panel

2 change user account control settings

    3. pull the slider to the level as low as possible

    4. restart the PC

    5. pass by the "Anytime Upgrade" as usual

    Try the following:

1 disable any security software before attempting to upgrade

    2. make sure that your computer is updated (devices and applications)

    3. disconnect all external devices before installing.

    4. check your hard disk for errors:

    Click Start

Type: CMD, according to the results, right-click CMD

    Click on "Run as Administrator"

At the command prompt, type: chkdsk /f /r

When you restart your system, your computer will be scanned for errors and will try to correct them.

    1. click on start, type msconfig in the search box and press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on continue.

    2. in the general tab, click Selective startup.

    Hello

Thanks for choosing Microsoft Community Forums.

According to the description, it seems that you are having problems with the installation of the updates you don't have ethernet card.

For the installation of Windows, the computer updates must be connected to the Windows Update server to search for updates. Unless you're connected to the Internet, you can not connect to the Windows Update server. Then I suggest that you use the media of Internet connection to check the updates, and install the updates.

  • Windows media player security update

I can't upgrade to the windows media player security upgrade for my overdrive media player. I go to tools and hit the upgrade of security and nothing happens. Went to the online version to be upgraded and I do not see anything to upgrade for windows 8 (which I hate!) All of the suggestions. I want to download my audio book. I can download MP3 format, but not WMA. Any help would be grateful!

I had the same experience in trying to follow the steps of the OverDrive.

I managed to get the upgrade by following the steps in this document.  Step 1 has a protected DRM file that you can play using Windows Media Player.  If missing the upgrade, since the upgrade button was grayed out on the site, you will receive a pop-up window to upgrade the DRM.  This should be the upgrade which does not work on the site.  Just make sure to play using Windows Media Player as my default player has been set up for a different program and it does not work.
