I just bought a new HP laptop running windows8. He does ' have an internal dvd drive, so I bought one. It is downloaded correctly. I can't play any DVD or CD on it. When I go to play a movie it says that it does not recognize the format, that it is also said something about codec, but I'm really tired on the codecs download because it says it might have files in them that can and will corrupt my computer. Help, please. Also why windows 8 not Media center? My computer isn't that I should? IAM new to this window thing 8 therefore explain in detail of things to where to go and what to click

Thank you very much to anyone who can help

Hi Laurie,

I understand the frustration when things don't work as expected. Let me help you with the issue.

  1. What type of file extension you are trying to play from the DVD?
  2. What is the model of the DVD player?
  3. The problem is specific to some DVD or all?

In this case could be due to incompatible drivers for the DVD player or the lack of codecs.

Codecs can be installed to read the formats that are not supported in Windows Media Player. A codec is a software to compress or decompress a digital media file, such as a song or a video. Windows Media Player and other programs use the codec to play and create digital media files.

I suggest you first uninstall and reinstall the drivers for the DVD player. If the problem persists, then please use your favorite search engine to download codecs packs according to the file extension.

On the issue of Media Center, you can add functionality by purchasing the package Windows Media Center on the Microsoft Store.
