Workstation 7, nested VM and ESX 4

Hi new to communities.

I have read a load of articles here and google about it, but is seeking clarification on this issue.

I've set up a test to study for my VCP 4 lab.

I have install 2 x 4 ESX servers, installed on the workstation 7, they work fine, but VMware won't let me set Virtulisation here at equipment and always new chages software if I change the settings within parameters of workstations or in the Config file.

This causes the problem I can not run a VM nested inside the ESX Server.

I have Virtulisation enabled in bios and the ESX servers work perfectly and the two start very quickly.

Is there a work around / difficulty of obtaining external VM to use hardware Virtulisation? This is only a test lab and purley to test. So am just looking for a blow dry / patch that could get this to work.

I tried many changes for both interiors and external VM files including the line back door of the monitor in the config file, but without success.

Thank you

Muz

You have a processor of AMD family 0FH.  Due to a fault of AMD - V design which has not been set up to AMD family 10 H processors, Workstation 7 can't stand AMD - v on the family 0FH processors.

  • Best Linux for host? ... and ESX vs. Workstation

    I've been running VM Workstation since 1999.  I just built a physical machine for my lab at home I want to only run on VMS.  I have two questions.

    What is the best linux for VM Workstation 8 host?

    I went the compatitibility guide at:

    http://PartnerWeb.VMware.com/comp_guide2/search.php?deviceCategory=software & testConfig = 17

    and put:

    Workstation

    8.0

    all the

    all the

    Linux

    Desktop

    64

    and it happens with Mandriva and SUSE.  It's weird.  No Red Hat?  No Ubuntu?  No Debian?  Mandriva is a French company funded by the Russians, which hurts me a little inside, and SUSE is not free.  It makes me wonder if this page is current.

    Which leads to my next question. ... Are there not some hypervisor product that does not even need a host operating system?  What ESX?  I can get all the features of Workstation (snapshots, etc.) with this hypervisor product? ... and of course, I can't spend $2,000 for a lab at home.   It seems to me that to remember that one of these products is free,... was it ESXi?  Can someone explain the differences between the workstation and ESX in a few sentences.  But if I need the version ESX is $2000, then too bad.

    I suppose that, ideally, I would like to install Workstation as a hypervisor (no host operating system).  Is there anyway to achieve this?  What do you suggest me?

    ESXi uses a very minimal video driver - a computer display virtual itself is not possible
    This is why you must use a second physical machine to view virtual machines

    inside the virtual machines, you get only a virtual video card - playing the latest games inside a virtual machine is not possible

    > or that, it cannot run on an i7? ... once again, really?

    This is not correct - do not know who told you that...
    ESXi is very picky when it comes to disk controllers - fake Raids and cheap stuff is not supported - but it will work with normal SATA drives

  • Issue between Cisco and ESX switch

    It is a small deployment with an ESX Server running a Windows Small Business SERVER 2003.

    ESX server has 2 network cards, previously a NIC was connected to a small FastEthernet Switch netgear and all workstations have been working on it.

    I replaced the netgear with a Cisco WS-C2960S-24TS-S and the field still works fine, the problem is that I can't connect to the service console or the VI client from a computer connected to the switch.

    I can't ping the IP switch ESX service console and also can not ping the switch since the service console.

    Switch and ESX console can ping the Windows Virtual Machine and the virtual machine can ping both of them. Therefore, I can get to the VI client via Wirtual Machine (not the best scenario to manage one of its right VMS ESX host?)

    I don't know what the problem is, but it sounds a lot there is a problem with the configuration of port / vlan on the cisco switch.

    Can a Cisco expert help out me here?

    Here are some details of the configuration.

    Port group service Console and the port Vm group do not use no matter what config VLAN on the ESX Server.

    I think I've seen this before. I'm not super familiar with this switch, but I think that the problem is with cisco-computer office macro.

    Try using the macro switch cisco instead since you are addressing a vSwitch on the other end. You can always check the mac address table and see if your Mac to the vswif (service console) make their appearance. If they are not then appear this is an inconsistency in the port between the Cisco Switch and vSwitch.

  • use Workstation 6.5 images in ESX 4

    Hello

    I want to use an image that I created with vmware workstation 6.5 on an esx Server 4. but just download the picture wit vSphere 4 to the esx does not work. When I want to on the image, it says:

    Cannot open scsi disk: 0: disc not supported or not valid type 7. If you forgot to import disc trees? Cannot create the SCSI device virtual scsi: 0, '... / filename.vmdk "DevicPowerOn power Module has failed in

    is it necessary to convert the image or is there another solution?

    VMDK format used by workstation can be used by ESX with small changes directly: momolithicFlat

    See my site http://sanbarrow.com/vmdk-howtos.html#flattovmfs

    all other formats must be imported first - converter either with vmkfstools and vmware-vdiskmanager

  • Openfiler and vsphere 4.0 and esx 3.5. possible?

    Hi all

    I with openfiler iscsi san using vmware workstation 6.5 method and worked well.  I wonder if you can install the virtual machine within vsphere 4.0 and esx 3.5 openfiler and create the 80 GB drive and make iscsi san.  Anyone know if this work.  I tried the same method with vmware workstation 6.5 and did not work.  Help me please.

    If it is essentially a test environment POC, it should be fine, but using VMware workstation 6.5 method would be good enough for then why try you this method?  You can use other appliances virtual network of Lefthand, target iSCSI rocket Division, Xtravirt VSA, etc... Or, I place openfiler VM on a laptop or a cheap PC and run as your NFS/iSCSI solution.

  • ISCSI performance with HP DL160 G6 and ESX 4.0

    I feel iSCSI performance with HP DL160 G6 and ESX 4.0 servers and would like to help with this.

    I have Setup iSCSI on 3 * ESX 4.0 host.

    Each have a corresponding single target and a single LUN on the SAN. The LUNS are formatted as fmfs3 types.

    Each host is connected to the QNAP San in the same way via a Gigabit switch.

    All NICs operate at 1 GB.

    To test the performance I use vmkfstools to clone a drive from the local store to the LUN

    On the first host (a DL140 G3) performance is good to 48 MB/s.

    On the 2 DL160 performance is very poor and barely reach 2 Mbps

    During cloning, DL160 servers save also on several occasions by the following in/var/log/wmkwarning:
    Vmkernel servername: 0:05:23:53.214 cpu2:4308) WARNING: NMP: nmp_DeviceRetryCommand: device 'naa.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx': waiting for updated status of fast path for blocked with e/s failover. No prior reservation is on the device.

    I made sure the servers are up-to-date:
    DL160 G6 Configuration:
    ESX 4.0.0 build-702116
    2 * NIC HP NC362i GB (firmware 1.7.2, driver 1.3.19.12.1)
    1 * smart Array P212 controller (firmware 5.14)

    The SAN server configuration:
    QNAP Ts-459u-rp (firmware Build 0302 T 3.6.1)

    I looked everywhere for an answer.
    I also tried the "esxcfg-advcfg - s 1/VMFS3/FailVolumeOpenIfAPD" as suggested on some positions.
    All to nothing does not.

    No, but you can use different components in the available packages which are Open Source however the necessary basic elements for virtualization are not Open Source or a part of the Open Source packages available.  Suggest you read VMware Workstation 8.0.2 and player 4.0.2 Open Source License for more details.

  • Differences Betweem ESXi and ESX

    Hai,

    I want to know the differences between ESX and ESX? where can get. If they are distinguished by the features that are available are not available.

    Thank you.

    Most of the features are available in available in ESX ESXi. In order to get the full functionality of ESXi, the host must be managed by vCenter Server.

    ESX has a console that is drastically reduced in ESXi. It is actually easier to install and easier to manage ESXi.

    >

    >
    Well you do almost everything bad that could be hurt.

    Here is the code that works to insert data into your table (the procedure is not even necessary).

    declare
    p_sl_num NUMBER := 1001;
    p_description VARCHAR2(50) := 'Testing Val1';
    inval1 test_type1 := test_type1();
    inval2 test_type2 := test_type2();
    begin
    inval1.extend();
    inval1(1) := test_object1('testx1', 'testx2', 'testx3');
    inval2.extend();
    inval2(1) := test_object2('testy1', 'testy2', 'testy3');

    INSERT INTO test_object_tpe
    (
    sl_num,
    description,
    main_val1,
    main_val2
    )
    VALUES
    (p_sl_num, p_description, inval1, inval2);
    commit;
    end;
    /

    See example 5-15 making reference to an element of nested Table Chapter 5 using PL/SQL collections and records in the PL/SQL doc
    http://docs.Oracle.com/CD/B28359_01/AppDev.111/b28370/Collections.htm#CJABEBEA

    1. you don't even have the procedure because it is a simple INSERTION in the table you can do directly (see my above code)

    inval1(1).val1 := 'testx1';

    Since you have not yet created all the elements, there is no element 1 "inval1". You need EXTEND the collection to add an element

    inval1.extend();

    And then, there is an empty element, but "inval1" is a container for objects of type 'test_object1' not for scalars as "val1", "val2", and "val3".
    If you can not do

    inval1(1).val1 := 'testx1';

    You must create an instance of 'test_object1 '.

    inval1(1) := test_object1('testx1', 'testx2', 'testx3');

    And so on for the other collection

    You don't need the procedure (as my code example shows), but once you fill in the variables correctly it will work.

    Yes, but you must have a license for 3.5 systems running server. The vSphere vCenter must be configured to point to this license server. One solution is to install this on the server vSphere vCenter and decomission license server when all the ESX servers running 4.x.

    Another option is to keep the old server licenses running and just the new vCenter for that one pint.

  • ESX3.5 u4 and esx 4.0 coexist in a same set of cluster

    Hi all

    Did have someone out there try ESX3.5 u4 and ESX 4.0 coexist in a same set of cluster?

    If so, could it be perform Vmotion without any problem?

    If you have an engine off the VM on an ESX 4.0 host, when you click, you have the opportunity to upgrade the virtual hardware right. This updates the version of vm 7 as it is presenting different virtual material as the improved network card and others. As long as you don't do this until once all your ESX 4.0 host you should be fine. When you do not want to upgrade the version, be sure that you upgrade to the latest vmtools on the virtual machine before upgrading the hardware.

  • Update Manager 4 and esx 3.5

    Hello

    simple question...

    I plan to upgrade my 3 infrastructure to vsphere.

    I will modernize the virtual Center 2.5 to vcenter server 4.0. The problem is, I can't upgrade all of my ESX 4.0 servers in the near future.

    Thus, for a few months, I have two servers esx 4.0 and several 3.5 (there is no interaction between the servers (not vmotion, DRS,...). Only the 'stand-alone' servers to the virtual Center).

    My question is, with the Update Manager 4.0, I'll still be able to push the update to the servers of esx3.5? Or it only can update the 4.0 servers?

    I don't know of updates of reviews, only hosts.

    Thank you

    Yes, as long as you have 3.5 hosts in your inventory, you can continue to scan, clean up and their patch.

    For scanning and remediation Update Manager works with the following versions of ESX/ESXi.

    For the machine virtual patching operations, Update Manager works with ESX 3.5 and ESX 3i version and subsequent versions

    3.5 and later versions.

    I was wondering if I can get feedback from some of the members of the community.  We used Lab Manager very strongly in our support organizations and it has proved to be a valuable tool.  Recently, we collaborated with the Department of technical training and started hosting online seminars and classes for them using Lab Manager.  Last week we had a fairly large class of users (approx. 45), each duty deploy 2 rather Beefy VMs that were very intensive resources (Jboss, SQL, Mail to name a few).  My colleague and I went through a lot of trials and planning to ensure that our infrastructure can handle the load while allowing our users to date at the same speed and reliability, so that they are used.

    Our Lab Manager ESX server pools made up of the following:

    5 HP DL380 G5 servers with 2 x Quad Core 2.8 GHZ processors (8 cores each) with 32 GB of RAM each

    2 HP DL580 G5 servers with 4 x Quad Core 2.8 GHZ processors (16 cores each) with 128 GB of RAM each

    When the class is running and everyone has made their 2 machines, we noticed for some reason, he was all on ESX2 and 3 deployment (380 s).  Then came the ESX alarms, use of 90% of memory, then more than 100% bringing the disk page.  The CPU usage was at a all time high.

    I look at the 2 580 s and there are about 4 virtual machines deployed on them.

    So my question is...

    How does he know where to launch a Virtual Lab Manager machine?  There's no sense 2 servers have been brought to the red zone, and almost overloaded when the 2 most powerful servers in my farm are nearly dormant.  I noticed sometimes in the past, but not this bad.  Normally, we have about 45-50 computers deployed at some point and it seems to spread them out properly.

    This group of training has access to the same LUN and ESX server with Betclick as any other organization that we have.

    We have decided hosting several sessions of training may be greater than this one and would like to know that the virtual machines will be distributed properly.

    I would like to know your opinion on this

    First to answer your question, then make guess what happens.

    As indicated in response Ilya, LM distributed VMs differently with active DRS resource pools and pools of resources without active DRS.

    LM place VMs when the DRS is not used.

    When DRS is used, we use the DRS admission control to select the host to place virtual machines.

    DRS is turned off, LM uses its own placement routine:

    For each virtual machine, LM filter all managed servers that cannot run the virtual machine. A complete list of patterns are:

    • The managed server has not enough memory or quota for virtual machine to run the virtual machine.

    • The host is not connected to the data store that is the virtual machine.

    • The virtual machine has active state (suspended) and the CPU of the server managed by the waking state has been captured is not compatible with the managed server currently considered.

    • The virtual machine has been a guest on 64-bit and the managed server is not 64-bit capable.

    • The virtual machine has more processors than the managed server.

    • The managed server is not accessible or is set to "prohibit deployments." Not reachable may mean that the lm-agent or its not to ping queries is not answer (this is visible in the list of managed server page).

    Once we have the complete list of eligible servers, we place the virtual machines on the host including the smallest (MemoryReservation % + CPUReservation %). By default, we reserve not CPU on LM VMs, this internship will be largely due to the memory on the host computers if you have not changed the settings of reservation of CPU on your virtual machines.

    For closed deploy to the PF3, force us all virtual machines to go on the same host, so if any virtual machines have any special data store / CPU type specification, all virtual machines is forced to go on this host. If there are conflicting requirements between different virtual machines in the same configuration, deployment will fail. Closed VMs also have another condition to check that is rarely achieved in practice: number of closed networks available on the managed server. By default, this is 20 and you will need more than 20 different configurations closed running on a managed server before you who will strike.  (LM4 allows Cross fencing host, so this does not apply in LM4).

    To make a guess blind because of your distribution problem - if you use the saved state and fencing, it's probably the type of processor.  Processor type can be checked on the host properties page.

    If you not are not I would check that the images can deploy on the 580 s by disabling the 380s and trying to deploy them.

    If you use DRS (which you're not), it could be due to deployment of virtual machines too fast for the algorithm of control for the entrance of VC.  An easy solution for this is to extinguish the DRS on the cluster manager of laboratory.

    We tested load internal repeatedly, the product QA in different laboratories, we run (LM has been used in VMworld Labs for the past couple years and internal systems of training and demonstration for our Organization implemented SE), so no need to worry about this.  I assure you that the first 'real' performance problem you will encounter will be almost certainly due to an overload of your storage array (too many IOPS / s)... and for that you have to distribute content in data warehouses and use techniques of creating paths to balance the load.

    Kind regards

    Steven
