Workstation 9. impossible to mount shared folders

Comments to VMware 9.0.3 on windows7 64-bit host 7 debian (linux 1.0.6 64-bit of kali) could not get shared folders to work I have a 7 guest debian that I created using vmware workstation 9.0.3. When I install the vmware tools, looks like it works fine, and I make sure to say 'yes' to add the hgfs supports, however, after you run vmware-config - tools.pl, my shared folders appear under/mnt/hgfs.

I run/usr/bin/vmware-hgfsclient, and it lists the different folders, I shared with the virtual machine, but they are simply not get mounted.

If I run

$ Mount-t vmhgfs .host: / mnt/hgfs /.

I get an error message saying that the device does not exist.

I uninstalled and reinstalled vmware tools several times and also tried the open-vm-toolbox to see if it will work, but so far nothing has worked.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have another virtual machine with Windows 8.1 and shared folders are always great working there.

All the world has noticed this problem?

    Hello

These types of problems are almost always due to an install VMware Tools broken.

Don't try a repair within the OS installation as it will likely not resolve this (as you have already discovered in this case)

    Instead, follow these steps:

    • Uninstall VMware tools
    • Restart the guest operating system
    • Install VMware Tools
    • Restart the guest operating system.

FWIW, this post has reported the same problem (VMware Fusion) and it was fixed by using workaround above. Shared Folders - upgrade Windows 10 of 15.11.

    1. I defining the. VMX file with this option isolation.tools.hgfs.disable = "TRUE" but every time the virtual machine is run, the user can set the option sharing folders.

2 - I have configured the config.indrop and UNK drop with this same parametter things.

PS: I tried also with VM tools to disable the sharing options during installation but the same thing.

The only way you can stop a user from changing the shared folders for a given virtual machine settings is to change its parameters of access control by encrypting and turning restrictions.

If so, what are the alternatives (other than NFS, Samba, SSHFS, etc.)?

    Hello @rasa

Unfortunately, I can't make an official statement from VMware, but I think you're wrong interpret this answer.

The problem is that the distribution of VMware tools is a bit 'complex', the reason is actually to simplify things and have all of the drivers in VMware conveyed by the respective kernel developers and linux distributions.

    There are 3 different "tracks".

1 Linux "inbox" drivers, for example. the drivers that are part of the kernel / linux distributions, these include, network driver vmxnet3, pvscsci driver, memory balloon pilot, vmwgfx 3d graphics driver, drivers vmci and vsock, see also: KB VMware: VMware for Linux VMware Windows support

Down on this page you can find the part that responds to your question:

Why a version of an operating system do not include the vmhgfs driver?

The vmhgfs driver has been added upstream. To work around this situation, install VMware Tools provided with the workstation or Fusion products, who will install the lack vmhgfs drivers. The VMware Tools installer does not disturb VMware Windows included with the operating system.

2 open-vmware-tools drivers, these are extra libraries extending the features. This used to contain everything that in the past but parts have been moved to inbox drivers and the part you are looking for drivers - vmhgfs - is part of the supply of office products. See also: KB VMware: VMware to open-vm-tools support

    3. the vmware tools bundled package. This is where you find the vmhgfs driver, your problem is now that you are trying to use Ubuntu 14.04 and that the OS is not out yet (next month). I installed it without any customization here, and while I can list the mount point, that is not to have the shared folder. Drag & drop between guests however works. I'll take a look at why it does not list the part after the OS is updated to the most recent (update has not since last week)

    hope this helps,

    Wil

Edit: FWIW I reinstalled the vmware tools and he has indeed missed out on the vmhgfs driver. While I can probably patch (errors appear quite trivial) I'm not in that much of a need and prefer to wait that Ubuntu has released faithful and VMware has updated the vmware tools. For now I just use drag & drop as mentioned above.

    Hello

This seems to be a problem with VMware Tools which contains the driver HGFS. Even if it does not work on ESXi, if the virtual machine is migrated to a non-ESXi system and HGFS is enabled then HGFS would have the problem. ESXi has other controls does not affect the fact that HGFS has a problem. It's one of the reasons that the Hardening Guide said to turn it off in any case.

I run 11.1.2 on the Linux Mint 17 64 b host Workstation.  My main guest is a Windows machine.

I've updated recently to 10 Windows in Windows 7.  I retroactively updated VMWare Windows 10 hardware compatibility setting.  I reinstalled VMWare Tools.

Shared folders has simply stopped working.

If there is no solution for this, I'll have to go back to my Windows 7 preview that I took to safety before the upgrade.

    Hello

When you say 'I reinstalled VMware Tools' did you uninstall VMware Tools, restart invited, install VMware Tools, prompted to reboot, or was he "ran reinstall VMware Tools" in the menu?

  • Can't see the shared folders in WIn 8.1 comments.

I'm using VMware Workstation 10.0.1 and I earn 8.1 as my host OS.

When I set up a VM 7 Win, shared folders are working as expected, but with a VM 8.1 Win I can't find folders in Explorer.  Also, I tried to access it via \\vmware-host and \\.host without success.

How can I see the shared folders in a Win 81 guest VM?

    Thank you!

    Hey Psi,

I had a similar problem. Worked fine on Windows 8.0, but after modernized this VM for Windows 8.1, the shared folder feature has stopped working. Only after the reinstallation of VMware Tools, it worked again.

Please note that a 'fix' on VMware Tools installation does not provide it, only a complete uninstall/reboot/install/reboot sequence makes this feature back to life for me.

    Hope this helps,

  • Lost access to the "shared folders" after upgrade to Windows 8.1 Overview

After the upgrade to Windows 8.1 I no longer access my shared folders. The left pane of the file Explorer has a red x for shared folders. I am running VMware Workstation 9.0.2. The host and the guest o/s are 64-bit.

I upgraded from Fusion 2 to 5 on a MacBook Pro which has Win XP SP3. Downloaded and installed the Win 8 upgrade package. Changed the Windows 8 operating system, but could not access the Internet. Thanks to a post of WoodyZ I had that solved this morning by adding a line in the .vmx file.

Another problem I have to solve is that with this combination of VM/Win8, I do not see the shared folders on my Mac that I used to be able to do with the old configuration. Suggestions as to what is needed to make these records appear when I bring to the top of the file Windows Explorer?

Shared folders work for shared virtual computers?

I guess that you did not read the documentation!

From page 52 in Using VMware Workstation:

Allow a shared folder for a virtual machine

You can enable file sharing to a specific virtual machine. To set up a folder for sharing between virtual machines, you must configure each virtual machine to use the same directory on the network or host system share.

NOTE You cannot enable a shared folder to a shared virtual machine or remotely.

  • How to enable shared folders on VMWare Tools under ESX4

On a windows server is running on a host ESX 4, VMWare Tools reports that the shared folders are currently disabled on the host.

    How enable and use it?

    Hello

(VMware Shared Folders) vmhgfs driver will not work with ESX or ESXi, it is only for the workstation, Fusion, a player of nd. I would put in a virtual firewall that denies all access and dev environment, until you're ready to share data.

You can then open a port on the firewall and have a system to capture these data via the port. The alternative is to use something like a Keyspan USB hub IP and write data on a USB key, and then physically move to the side of the "production" of the House.

In general I find instead of much easier virtual firewall... VMsafe even won't work here.
