  I bought a Y580 with 750 + 32 GB SSD. I want to buy a Crucial M4 SSD mSATA and install it in place of the 32 GB one.

  I'm not sure but I think that all the msata ssd are not the same size.
  For the installation of OS on ssd there was no problem because the size of the ssd 256 GB, which should be more than enough.

  SATA controllers will normally appear as "SCSI" controllers in windows. It's normal and nothing to worry about. Often the SATA controllers will also be able to run in IDE mode and then they present themselves as IDE controllers, but it is unlikely that they will be able to operate optimally, as the IDE interface is missing some features of SATA. So even if you do not have the ability to set the cache in the Device Manager, a SATA controller is running in mode SATA should work just fine.

  The IDE bus is managed by the controller SATA3, and if this control is set in the BIOS to "IDE" somehow it seems related to the operating system as a SCSI device.  By setting this entry in the BIOS to "RAID/IDE" IDE devices get properly detected.

  This can also occur if you change the BIOS settings for the SATA ports of 'IDE' to 'AHCI' after installing Windows 7.

  You need a reader 2.5 "SATA - there is no support for type mSATA or readers PCIe card in this system.

  Small SSD in laptop computers is generally used as a cache, not a real drive. It's called Intel Rapid Storage. You can reconfigure to use as a separate disk. Mine came without an SSD, so I bought a (128 GB) and put it in and installed the operating system on it.

  PS. the SSD Y580 slot is mSATA, not M.2/NGFF

  Have you checked the BIOS for the SATA mode option settings?

  Some BIOS supports a SATA mode: AHCI and compatible.
  In case you want to use the SATA performance, you must use the AHCI parameter.

  AFAIK the external eSATA port supports the 300 MB/s and in the BIOS must be set to serial ATA (default) port4.

  This laptop has no document referring to an mSATA compatible player.  The section of the guide that you posted above is in reference to SSD 2.5 "normal readers.  Everything (not detected, no driver, no mention of the support mSATA in the guide and no BIOS option) pointing to him not be supported, unfortunately.  It does not appear that you will be able to get this working.  I wish I could be more useful.

  I should no big deal but I always put my system on SATA port disk 0. I also disconnect non-system hard drives during the installation of Windows to avoid any involuntary to other readers.

  I installed a MyDigitalSSD 256 GB Smart Series SATA III but I only seem to get SATA 2 speeds.

  Sales representative said Lenovo the x 230 is SATA 3 for the slot mSATA and CrystalDiskInfo seems to confirm what it displays a Transfer Mode SATA/600, although HD Tune reports as SATA 2.

• Portege R930 - upgrade the mSATA SSD succssfull

  Just briefly, I wanted to report an SSD upgrade.

  When I got my Portege R930 (PT331E, i7) two years ago, I changed the HD to a PRO 840 Samsung SSD 512 GB (big improvement). Now, this SSD is too small (photos!) and I wanted to increase the capacity up to 1 TB.

  But instead of a new SATA, I decided to go for an mSATA + adapter SATA I felt an mSATA unit would be more "evolutionary" - next update of the laptop for me would be a Portege Z, who use mSATA.

  So I bought a Samsung 850 EVO 1 TB with a Delock adapter/converter mSATA SSD, made a clone of the Apricorn cable and the software switched the SSD and everything works fine (actually a little faster )! At first I tried to use the clone with software from Samsungs migration but this didn t work, maybe I didn t the right version.

  -Now I have a lager SSD that will live longer than my R930. Please note that I'm not an expert with computers - just a happy user Toshiba! Thanks for a good forum with my good ideas!
