10 windows on Portege R600 - my experience

The Toshiba Portégé R600 is an older laptop which is official supported by Toshiba for Windows Vista, XP (downgrade), and Windows 7. But it appears to perform reasonably well 10 64-bit Windows. There's a thing I have with build Windows 10 Insider Preview 10074. She stops booting, with circular points from their round forever. (bootlog mode will show the reason)

What you do is boot in safe mode. Disabled the second entry for the graphic card in Device Manager. Windows starts normally. I hope that I can get with Microsoft to fix this stupid bug.

I don't know how this will affect build upgrades in the future.

Other things of maintenance:

The thermal grease for the graphics card becomes a heat insulating powder useless over time. This will appear as a graphical corruption on the screen, short lines that will show the strange colors. If you open the laptop (Tip: bin for the screws), slide it gently open and cables sheet, there is a yellow sink on the back side. The white heat pinkish dough will collapse right away. For the moment, I redid with a Coolermaster thermal grease, but I think this will give the same problem later. Maybe I'll get myself some K5 - Pro, as this seems to be a silicone rubber which is more sticky without being a glue. And it should be replaced the torn thermal pad on the CPU too. Although a shim copper could work there too.

Notice of Windows troubleshooting will tell you there are drivers available, with links to download and install them manually. Do not use them, because they are Windows Vista drivers. It won't destroy anything, but they have some quirks. Simply download drivers 64 bit of Windows 7 on the Toshiba site.

It can accommodate 4 GB of RAM, bringing the total up to 5 GB. It can take memory is either labelled PC2 800 MHz or DDR2 6400.

A Corsair SSD BX100 works very well in it. But the disk controller is only SATA 2.0, so you will get half the speeds you will see benchmarked elsewhere. Don't forget device initiated Power Management (DIPM) enabled, as the BX100 falling to 250mAh to ~ 50mAh in this mode.

'VAT package' for Windows 8 64 bit for the Toshiba R700 will bring back most of the hotkey features. Unfortunately, this breaks the brightness control buttons, but you can adjust the brightness elsewhere. With this driver package, the pure Transflective mode works again.

Someone put up a "feature pack" for graphics drivers, which brings superior versions of OpenGL that have been supported by Intel on Windows 7 driver and earlier versions. And it installs the program in the task bar that allows you to control the graphics settings. That said, those that have been deleted for some reason (e.g. bugs), YMMV Yes. The video acceleration of h.264/AVC, through DXVA works even without this "feature pack".

I have not found an ALPS touchpad driver who survives on standby. Without the driver for the touchpad, it is just a touch pad without scrolling on the right side area. It works, but it would be nice to be able to scroll.

If you think your system is very slow, maybe check the BIOS [ESC then F1] on the second page [Fn + SHIFT + 9] if everything is set for maximum performance. The lower settings are there for the older operating systems that have no power which is own management (BACK). It will put the CPU in gas mode where it's the departure 50% of the time.

The battery life is of the order of the 4h30m with a new battery, according to 'powercfg /batteryreport '. Mine is a little older and will hit 4 hours. Something like 5 in the save mode [Fn + F2] Toshiba power.

Thank you very much for your report detailed on Win10 on Portege R60.

AFAIK some BIOS versions contains the additional option to enable and disable the lighting.
Please check if the lighting is not disabled in the BIOS.

  • Portege R600 - do I need for Windows 7?

Hey there. I have a Toshiba Portege R600, my first laptop, and I'm in love.

I'm angry against Vista Business, but also, I get angry to Windows XP. I would like to give a whirl to Windows 7 since I heard good things about her.
I now burn a recovery disk as I type. What else do I need? On the desktop, there is a folder called "Applications and drivers TOSHIBA" so I guess I have to save those on a USB and load them onto Windows 7. What if drivers? There is so much and I don't want too many applications, the cluster disk.

Tips for a first time the laptop computer user?

    > Windows 7 a whirlwind since I heard good things about her.
I've never heard of Windows 7 good things still
I think you forget that Windows 7 is only at the stage of beta or as far as I know already a Release Candidate but it s not a final version. So that means it may have a few problems and the pilot in charge is not as good as on Vista or XP.

However, if you need the Windows 7 drivers you must search on external Web sites for pilots, but sometimes the drivers for Vista also works on Windows 7.

  • Portege R600 and Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 (custom installation). Subsequently installed the Toshiba Setup program to load all the programs/drivers concerned. I have a problem with the screen, especially in Word 2003. That she will all suddenly, distort so that the words become faded/pointed/double, so that you can not read the display. A second open the document in Word will not be affected. Re-opening and closing the particular document clears the problem. The document is late and is not damaged.

Also found that sometimes when start up or wake up from hibernation, the machine hangs and looks like the fan is working overtime.
Nothing happen so unless I have a power to force down and restart.

Finally, the wheel on my mouse (latest Windows 7 drivers installed) will not work to resize a screen of Word and will not work in the folders pane in Outlook 2003.

    Any thoughts?

    See you soon

Strange! I installed Office 2003 on two laptops Toshiba with Win7 and everything is OK.
Have you noticed some other display under your Portege R600 Win7 problems, for example in Internet Explorer or other applications running?

    Hello

Unfortunately I m not a R600 owner but in my opinion it shouldn't be a problem with the installation the most common devices should be recognized

But of course you will not be able to install Toshiba special tools and utilities that are designed specifically for the Windows operating system.

  • Portege R600 of fingerprint problem: error: could not open the specified database

    Hello

I am trying to give the registration of fingerprints for my Toshiba Portege R600-101 and I get the above error.
I tried also on windows XP and Vista.

Has anyone with the same problem or anyone suggesting a solution?

I uninstalled the truesuite Access Manager but still the same problem.

    See you soon.

    Hello

I noticed a new update for software fingerprinting for protected R600.
Remove the old application of fingerprints, restart the laptop, clean the registry and the system using a 3rd party too (CCLeaner is free and not bad).
    Then reboot again.

Download the fingerprint on the page of the European driver Toshiba Software and install again.

  • Portege R600 - issue of SSD upgrade

I have a R600 10 q and I am interested to put an SSD in to replace aging / slow HDD have had a look at what others have said and there seems to be some compatibility issues.

We know if these have been fixed with the new BIOS updates? or is there a list of compatible drives?
Have a been a success with a particular model?

    Thanks for the help
    Tim

    I agree with Akuma.
The use of SSD drive should not be a big problem.
If something does not work, try to update the firmware of SSD drive for the last s.
In most cases, this action has resolved most of the problems

Since the Portege R600 supports a SATA controller, the SSD drive should support the same standard of controller.

Good luck and thanks for sharing your experience after upgrading the SSD drive

  • Portege R600-11b - screen is very low

    Hello

The screen on my Portege R600-11b disappeared suddenly extremely dim. There is no problem with him coming back to life after hibernation - but he remains coems back extremely dim. Light blinks until when I press the button in the upper right corner with a symbol of the Sun.

I think I might need a FL inverter? Do you know how do I know which I need and instructions on how to fit it?

Also I had problems with Windows 7 Professional turning very slowly. I'm assuming that the two problems are not related.

    Hope you can help, thanks.

    Hello

I recommend connecting an external monitor.
If the image on the external monitor would be perfect, then your internal screen or inverter maybe FL needs to be replaced.
You ask how to check this?
Well, I'm afraid of each part should be checked using another good part tested m.

In your case I would ask a support specialist
Guarantee is valid? If yes then I recommend to contact Toshiba service in your country.

  • Portege R600-12Z long delay of start & does not recognize DVD dirve

I have been using my Portege R600 running windows XP for about 14 months now and recently FOUND that he began to take 1 to 2 minute wait before starting the sequence start or resumption after hibernation. Now, I have discovered that the DVD drive (5100 DVD - RW supermulti drive) does not work: in the Device Manager it shows as unable to start; If I try to boot from the drive of CD/DVD (F8 at first upward, or the definition of the boot priority) it does not take into account the CD and eventually get to the start of the HARD drive in any case. At the same time, the reader is actually superimposed a disc (it will open and close and will try to read any disc inserted). I've updated the bios (3.20) and all the drivers concerned I can find (although none seems to be specific for this drive). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I should also mention that this replaced R600 actually an another R600 (one of the earlier and more fragile versions) on which I had exactly the same problem after about 10 months. I just unluckly, or is this a weakness of the R600 line?

    PMR thanks for your comments.

  • Portege R600 - display problem device change Utility

We started to use computers laptop Toshiba Portege R600 series on my place of work. All laptops are home in a Toshiba Slim Port Replicator II. Laptops are all running a version of Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 applied (and of course a few customization business).

The problem is with the display on the external monitor. The laptop starts according to the normal and connects to the fine. The Fn + F5 key and so we can switch between the external LCD screen and the laptop monitor. We can also extend the desktop on the external monitor without problem.

The problem occurs when the laptop is not docked since the Replicator. After having similar problems with R500 series laptops, Toshiba following applications have been installed:

    (1) common modules (version 6.06.01)
    (2) controls Toshiba (version 3.31.3800)
    (3) button ON / OFF (version 2.5.1.0_IS115)
    (4) Toshiba utility (version 4.30.18)
    (5) Toshiba screen device change Utility (version 2.5.0.0)
    (6) Toshiba Hotkey utility for display device (version 3.4.5.5)
    (7) Toshiba Mobile extension 3 for XP (version 3.87.00)

We now have the following symptoms:

    (1) detach, the "gear" icon appears and then the error "TOSHIBA Display Device change Utility is not installed correctly. Please install TOSHIBA screen utility unit of change. "
    (2) for the mooring of the laptop again, we get the "home" icon, and then the same error.
    (3) after that, the external monitor does not become active once again, until what you press Fn + F5.

I have tried uninstalling / reinstalling the TOSHIBA screen device change utility. Have tried to remove the Mobile Extensions and install the software, tried a number of different things to make it work. Rebuilt 1 stop working and everything was installed in the order above without success. In fact, noted that during the installation of the TOSHIBA utility screen device Change the Setup screen starts and runs, but the window does not uninstall.

This seems to be a driver problem with those from Toshiba, but I'm not sure. Someone at - it suggestions regarding this? The drivers that I use are on the site of Toshiba Australia (even if they are the same drivers found on the main website of Toshiba). The link below.

  • Re: Portege R600 - port replicator is compatible with regional products?

    Community of greetings from Toshiba,

I need to buy laptops for several employees who are moving between the United States, the United Kingdom and the Middle East.
The Portege R600 exist in all 3 markets, but each has a slightly different part number.

The part number Replicator of compatible Port to the R600 is difference to the United Kingdom, the United States and the Middle East.
Users would be able to dock their laptops in one of the 3 offices, because they travel extensively between each country.

What's the Slim Port Replicator II (PA3603U-1PRP) and Slim Port Replicator III (PA3681E-1PRP) compatible with each of the products of the soil of Portege R600?

United Kingdom Replicator of ports Slim Portege R600-11B (PPR61E-01G00CEN) III (PA3681E-1PRP)
    Middle East Replicator of ports Slim Portege R600-10 b (PPR61E-00F00MAR) 2 (PA3603E-1PRP)
    USA, Portege R600-S4201 PPR60U - 01700C Slim Port Replicator II (PA3603U-1PRP)

    Hello

I think that it shouldn't be a problem with the different Portege R600 in combination with the Slim Port Replicator 3.

Portege R600-11b, R600-10 b belongs to the same series (PPR61E), that the R600 US belongs to the PPR60U, but this should t be a problem.

As far as I know the different R600 from different regions are not really different (some belongs to the same series) as far as I know there could be a difference between some pre-installed applications and some modules as for example the card wireless network, but this should not affect the use of Slim Port Replicator 3.

    Cheers mate

  • Portege R600 - Dynadock displaylink installation failure

I tried to install drivers 2.3 for a dynadock USB DVI, for use with a Portege R600.

Whenever I tried, the DisplayLink driver installation fails, which means that the connection with the external monitor does not work.

    A few error messages appear:

"This file has no program associated with it for performing this action...". "- referring to DisplayLinkCore, something--the window is truncated.

    The second message:

    'Impossible to install DisplayLink Core'

The Portege is under XP SP3.

I saw a post [http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=145077𣚵] which seemed relevant, but I can't at this point.

I would appreciate any pointers on this.

Great news. Thanks for this feedback!

  • Face recognition is available for Portege R600?

I was under the impression that this (a very competent machine!) R600 has face recognition - but I can't find this feature. Can I download from Toshiba?

    Thank you.

Face recognition is also available on Portege R600.
You can also find for download from Toshiba support page. There you can find the version 2.0.17.32 for Windows Vista.

  • Portege R600 - 13 X - how to reinstall the operating system on the new HARD drive?

    Hello

I inherited a Portege R600 - 13 X of my colleague, who hit and killed the hard drive. I installed a new hard drive, but you don't have operating system installation diskettes as he said that the computer has not come with any. To make things even more difficult, I believe that the optical drive may not work. My old R500 had a dead optical drive and after I replaced it (he has not yet worked) I was told it is perhaps something to do with the ribbon cable, which piggy back off the coast of the SD card reader, then to the motherboard.

Anyway, is it possible for me to install Win 7 Professional (I have the original windows key) from a USB flash drive? Or y at - it a specific OS recovery/reinstallation disk that I can download Toshiba?

Any advice would be very welcome
    Thank you
    NJ

I have a Portege R600, and he has been a formidable workaholic, although now showing its age with newer software.

I think these machines came with pre-installed Vista and your friend must have created a set of recovery discs when they got off the machine.

Toshiba did release a drive to upgrade when Windows 7 is released which was available to the buyer within the free upgrade period you. You may be able to find a disk, but you will need the Win7 license to go with it.

If not, your only option is likely to be to buy a disk and license. Of course, you can find the specific Toshiba drivers are missing. If you think about it, it's extremely unlikely that you will be able to locate what is essentially a free Windows 7 download install disc.

Without an optical drive, you need to use an external USB drive and the BIOS to boot from that first force.

I hope that you have succeeded.
