Activate Windows Defender
Hi all
I recently bought a 8500 XPS with windows 8. It came with a trial version of anti-virus Macaffee garbage. Windows 8 comes pre-installed with Windows Defender. However, you cannot have both. The Macaffee trial subscription has expired, however, it is not obvious how we remove macaffee or active Windows Defender. Whenever I get to what seems to be a corresponding window, it says that Windows Defender cannot be used simultaneously with Macaffee, but there is no apparent way to spend Macaffee to Windows Defender. Help, please.
Hi Ehre
You unstall McAfee via Control Panel / Add or remove programs. Your uninstall of McAfee will be incomplete. You should also download and run the McAfee removal tool, and then restart the computer tower. You can get the tool (Development) here:
http://download.McAfee.com/Products/Licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
Windows Defender must then be activated automatically.

I installed Microsoft Security Essentials today and I'm trying to edit startup programs. Whenever I try to change the settings for startup from the Control Panel, a pop up tells me that I need to activate Windows Defender and open. However, most of the security will not allow Windows Defender be turned on and I want to change the startup parameters. How can I accomplish this?
Hello
If you use Norton, AVG, Avira, Microsoft Security Essentials, McAfee, etc. the default action is for Windows Defender must be disabled, that these AntiVirus programs have their own Antispyware Applications.
There is nothing to worry.
Using both programs at the same time can cause system conflicts, etc.
If you want to have additional protection against malware using the version FREE of Malwarebytes AntiMalware:
http://www.Malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
And now edit startup in Vista without using Defender programs, use one of the following methods:

Here's what I use and recommend: (these are all free and very effective versions.)
Avast and Prevx proved extremely reliable and compatible with all I have
launched on them. Microsoft Security Essentials and Prevx have also proven to be very
reliable and compatible. Use MSE or Avast and Prevx, Prevx 3 but not all.Avast Home free - stop any shields is not necessary except leaving Standard, Web, and
Operation of the network.Prevx - Home - free
Windows Firewall
Windows Defender (is not necessary if you use MSE)
Protected IE - mode
IE 8 - SmartScreen filter WE (IE 7 phishing filter)
I also IE always start with asset if filter InPrivate IE 8.
(It may temporarily turn off with the little icon to the left of the + bottom
right of IE)Two versions of Avast are available 5.x and 4.8 x
Avast - home - free - 5.x stop shields you do not use (except files, Web, network, &)
Shields of behavior) - double click on the icon in the Notification area - real time Orange - click on the
Shield that you want to stop - STOP. To stop the Orange icon to show an error indicator-
Click on the Orange icon - top right - settings - click on the status bar - uncheck shields you

Finish those you don't use).
http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download#TAB4Or use Microsoft Security Essentials - free
http://www.Microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/Prevx works well alongside MSE or Avast
Prevx - home - free small, fast, exceptional protection CLOUD, working with other security
programs. It is a single scanner, VERY EFFICIENT, if it finds something come back here
or use Google to see how to remove.

would be unusual with Avast and occasional Prevx running with the exception of a low level cookie

I can't turn on Windows Defender. Is this a common problem? A way to start the program or remove and reload?
What AV program do you use? (Not to mention your operating system). If you have MSE, or an installed security suite, it will automatically stop WD as it has its own version and runs two programs of this type at the same time causes conflicts.
This forum is for the site's comments and your question should be asked in an appropriate forum if this does not answer your question.

Error message: 0x800106ba when you try to activate Windows Defender?!
I am trying to turn on Windows Defender, & get the message error: 0x800106ba. Tried to restart the computer, as the error message suggested, even. Can you help me? OnePennyShort
Hello OnePennyShort,
Thanks for posting on the Microsoft answers Forum.
I recommend that you look at the solutions of the following missions:
http://social.technet.Microsoft.com/forums/en-us/itprovistaapps/thread/f5536f2d-ACEB-41A5-beb6-92e5d3b2f73fIf this does not help then try the following suggestion:
Right click on command prompt and run as administrator. Type the following command:
WinMgmt /verifyrepository
If the system returns "referential WMI is not consistent", run this command:
WinMgmt /salvagerepository
The first time you run this operation fails. (It will assign orders to stop services leading to failure. "This may take a few minutes for the services to stop). Run the command again. You may in fact need to run 3 times before finally runs and ends on its own.
Reboot your system. If please reply back and let us know if it helped to solve your problem or if you still need help.
Sincerely,
Marilyn

Need help activate Windows Defender
I was recently scammed for my contact information of credit card of people claiming to be the call from Microsoft, they had remote access to my computer, I now find to be very slow and the homepage has changed color and I now have more icons on the screen. I tried to access Defender but it seems Defender is stopped, I tried to turn it back on, but keep, get a message saying "Windows Defender encountered an 0x80004003.invalid pointer error" can anyone help.
Hello
Read this, all that you should do when you give remote access to fraudsters.
Either these so-called "Microsoft" Tech companies want to sell you a worthless software, or remote access to your computer to try to steal your credit card and bank information and also achieve an identity theft on you.
We have all the errors and warnings in our Event Viewer
If you gave them remote access and you do Internet banking, contact your bank, explain, and change passwords.
If you use your online credit card, cancel and get a new one issued to you.
And the only way that willl you know that you are free to them is to backup your data and do a clean install of your operating system.
