After removing a virus, have now disappeared files in Vista

I had a rogue virus today which was a fake windows system restore.  He wouldn't let my computer.  I managed, or so I thought that got rid of him by performing a restore of the system to an earlier time.  Well, it seems to do the trick.  However; I went to send an email to a friend today and attach a photo to see that when I went to the file (it looks like its there) when I double click to open... He said "empty file" I was shocked and freaked out too.  I then started to check other folders... once again I would double click on them and nothing there.  There are only a handful of image files that still have photos in them.  Since this discovery, I went to my documents and NONE of my document files are even popping!  There are also a few things on my desk that are missing.  I AM PANICKING!  Someone help me please.  I don't have the money to pay one of these specialized engineers who will clean your computer and restore files.  Im hoping one of you can help me.  I would really appreciate it.  I feel so violated.
Thank you

Hello

Some of the more recent strains of fake software Anti Spyware started to hide peoples documents, program files and desktop icons. Add a + H attribute to the file. Here is a link to restore your hidden files , assuming that they have not actually been deleted. If they have been deleted you can download a program called recuva to try to 'restore' files

It can also be useful to download and install malwarebytes and run a full scan to ensure that your system is clear

  • After removing a virus from my computer, I can't access any of my programs like Windows Media Player. Pop - up says choose program to open the file type.

After removing a virus from my computer last year, I struggle to access most programs such as media player and other things.  When I try to open something, I get a popup asking me to choose the program I want to use to open this file. For some programs, this file is actually listed.  But for the most part, they did not.  For example, Nero express is what I use to copy CDs or DVDs.  I have to go into a safe mode to use it as well as using programs to run virus checks.  I was told that the virus had somehow corrupted or affected my file extensions.  I almost had cheated using powerful PC Max but did some research beforehand.  Any suggestions?

    original title: File Extension problems

If you need to go to Safe Mode in order to use certain applications (for example, Nero Express), particularly antivirus scans, you most likely have not successfully removed all malware from your computer.

How did you remove the virus from your computer last year?

You then install an antivirus application?  Which one?  Are you still using it?  What's his current subscription? Its subscription has already been authorized expiration?

What version of Windows, including service pack, do you use?

What other anti-malware software do you currently use?

Have you analysed recently with the following free tools?  Otherwise, download, install, update and run scans (not simultaneously) with each of them:
    MalwareBytes AntiMalware
    SUPERAntiSpyware
Like many also restore file associations.

    • Right-click on a file and select open with > choose program.
    • Look in the lists of programs (split in 'Recommend programs' and 'Other programs')
    • If you can't find the application you want to use to open this type of file, click on the button "Browse".
    • The "Program Files" folder should open (if it isn't, go to C:\Program Files
    • Find the program you want to use.  If you are looking in C:\Program Files\------, you determine which file is the actual program.  You should be able to tell from the icon.  If not, see note below)
    • Select the program (the exe file or the name of the program in one of these lists) and check the box "always use the program selected to open this type of file"
    • Click OK
    • Repeat the above for each type of different file according to the needs

Note: If you need to determine the EXE file for an application, just right-click on the shortcut you use to start the program, and then select Properties.  Click on the tab "shortcut".  The 'Target' box contains the path name to go to the executable (EXE file) for the program.   For example, the executable file for Firefox is "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

There are a few exceptions, including but not limited to Microsoft applications, which use a more obscure reference to the target.  Word, for example, indicates the 'target' as a 'Microsoft Office' gray of no matter the version.  The real exe for Word is 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICEnn\WinWord.exe' where the nn refers to the version of Word that you have (Word XP/2002 is 10, Word 2003 is 11, Word 2007 is 12, Word 2010 is 14).

If you need assistance with a shortcut that does not directly show the name of path, ask.

Initially, I visit the Toshiba site and find you the exact model of the computer and download the latest drivers for the machine.

  • After removing the Tdss rootkit, computer laptop My Windows Vista Home Premium keeps restarting after the connection. __

I had the Tdss rootkit on my laptop and removed using TDSS Killer of Kasperky. After the reboot, I have connected and saw a box that displays "Please Wait". After 5 to 10 seconds, my computer restarts. After the reboot, it shows options for Windows Vista loading, i.e. the safe mode, safe mode with network. I chose the mode safe mode with networking and everything works fine. The system properties box opens automatically. When I try to boot into normal mode, he repeated restart after the connection. I tried to run a restore of the system into safe mode with networking, but it tells me something about the system restore is in mode offline. I hit a brick wall and don't know what to do next. I don't want to if I have more options to factory default restore.

The TDSS rootkit is very destructive.  It is not uncommon to make a computer work is not properly after removing it.  I advise you to restore your computer to factory default.  Not only is this the best option, it's the safest option.  I wouldn't consider the computer to be trusted without going through the restore process.  Even if you can be sure that 100% of the infection has been removed, you have no way of knowing what changes the malware made to the settings on your computer, which may be exceptionally vulnerable to future malware attacks.

  • adding new files or remove the old Windows Media Player files. (Vista)

Since June 2010, I was not able to add new files or remove the old Windows Media Player files.  I can click on a new file and play using WMP or add to a playlist that is currently playing, but it does not recognize that it was added after as I close the program and re-open it.  Or I can delete the files that no longer exist on my computer but WMP always has them as my files.  When I click on add new media, it recognizes the right amount of files I would be adding, says to add them and then nothing is there.

Your media library has probably been corrupted. To reset, follow the instructions for WMP 11 Vista at http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#medialibrary . Note the reset of the library will make you lose all the counts to play and possibly ratings too. Tim Baets

  • Please HELP: after removing a virus I've lost all my personal files, and I have no restore points to use as recovery.

I had a guest to use a program called Windows restore, it looked and behaved as if what I thought was a Trojan horse.  Then I left the guest to the top and ran rKill followed by Malwarebytes, then the computer restarted itself.  But here's the error I made.  One of the websites I've read about the virus, told to turn off Windows system restore before you run these programs.  So I did, without realizing that the practice has so deleted restore points saved in the system restore.  Only the initial programs supplied with my computer start the CPU appeared on a black desktop computer.  My photos, music, documents and other programs I download weren't there.  Empty all files in my profile in my computer.  In addition to the recovery of the system Windows if not, how can I retrieve this information.  I've used up what little knowledge troubleshooting I have.  Thank you for your suggestions.

Your files have probably been hidden.

    System Restore will not work

    Hi FriendFriend,

    1. did you of recent changes on the computer?

    2. do you have security software installed on the computer?

    3. you receive an error message when running the system restore?

I suggest that you put the computer in a clean boot state, and then try to clean boot.

It is possible that some third-party programs installed on the computer is causing the problem.

To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows XP by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

See the link below to learn more about how to clean boot.

  • Failed to retrieve the documents after removing a virus

    original title: strange Desktop

Well, I recently opened my computer, which corresponds to about 1 year and a half old after cleaning those annoying false security virus and I noticed that my entire office was empty except for a few icons base such as computers that were left. This means that all of my pictures and word documents had "disappeared". In addition, I can't change the wallpaper of a photo or themes they have, I can use a solid color background. Now, back to the documents. I have the feeling that they are present, because when I save a document with a homonymous denomination on the desktop, it comes out with the classic "there is already a file with the same name... consider changing this blah blah" and I can play songs from itunes that well that are invisible on the desktop come from there. For more details, I created another account and it works very well in the show view-images and background themes. My thingy user accounts file is empty which is weird, because it's supposed to be where are all my documents, but I always have to open some that are in the recently opened in Microsoft word.

The point of this question is just to ask if any1 else has had a similar problem and what to do? I prefer to recover my documents word if possible, but if this is not possible then I will just sacrifice their.

You can check your download folder if you have not already, or if you received these documents in an e-mail or never sent, they could possibly be, check all mail or sent mail.

You probably understood by now to do the manual backup is pretty important now days with any malware threats out there.

Malewarebytes doesn't do a good job and is much better than what microsoft can do with security essentials garbage.

If I bought a used computer, no matter who previously owned, the first thing I have with it would be to reinstall the operating system itself. You know not how the computer has been maintained, which has been incorrectly installed, what is missed, what virus and spyware, there may be, etc. I would not live with someone of another errors and problems, possibility of kiddy p0rn, etc, and I would not recommend anyone else to do.

Your choice of course, but in my opinion, you're playing with fire if you reinstall Windows properly.
