Assign 1 NIC purely for VMWare Workstation
Hi all
I recently gave me a Z1 HP Workstation PC for my office.
It is an integrated wireless and wired connections.
What I would do, is use the wireless purely for VMware workstation 7 and connect it to our test card WLAN to provide connectivity to the outside (for the windows updates, etc.).
Then use the wired connection, to connect to the domain network.
Anyone know if this is possible? I can't find much info about him.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Good then you have to try to work around the problem.
The host WiFi network adapter, let all IP6 verified but protocols and then manually set the IP4 address to a 169.254.x.x address while retaining the good mask subnet, default gateway, and DNS for the LAN router. It comes in a way that is known to work however, it is still dependent on how the wifi adapter and the WiFi router manages normal communications. If it works, what it does is to allow the virtual machine is to use the VMware bridge Protocol but the 169.254.x.x address stops the host itself to use. Other normal settings for good subnet mask, default gateway and DNS servers for the LAN router has been know to turn on the bypass, which will take place on a WiFi network card and or WiFi routers. In some cases, make what you want may have to be done via wired Ethernet, if a WiFi solution cannot be implemented.
If it does not we know as there may be other things to try with the WiFi before you have to implement a wired Ethernet solution.

support for VMware workstation 7
Hello
I looked on the website and to the best of my understanding VmWare Workstation 7 EOL.
http://www.VMware.com/files/PDF/support/product-lifecycle-matrix.PDF
Hereby, I understand that there will be no more support for VmWare and forums are essentially the only resource that I can rely on.
Can anyone confirm that this is correct?
Thank you.
This seems to be in line with the policy of support for this product:
«VMware will offer 2 years in favour of the general availability of a new major version in the support and subscription.»

I installed VMware Workstation 7.0.1 build 227600 on a Windows 7 64-bit machine. Update the VMware Tools using the compiler, one of the instructions is:
CP /mnt/cdrom/VMwareTools-x.x.x-xxxx.tar.gz /tmp/
How can I determine the values of x in this case? When I tried the following command:
CP /mnt/cdrom/VMwareTools-7.0.1-227600.tar.gz /tmp/
I received the following error message:
CP: cannot start ' / mnt/cdrom/VMwareTools-7.0.1-227600.tar.gz':
No such file or directory
The GuestOS I tried to run is:
Release of centOS 5.2 (Final)
I always use AutoComplete with tab to get the name of the file.
Type:
CP/mnt/cdrom/VM, and then press your tab key. He must complete the rest automatically.
Then complete the order with the part of tmp folder location.

How to set an MTU of 1600 for test Lab at home for the NSX on Vmware workstation
Hello.
I'll set up a laboratory at home to build a laboratory to the NSX. I am running 3 on VMware Workstation 11 Esxi hosts. All three hosts of esxi run each 4 Ethernet adapters on them.
To configure installation VXlan for my lab at home, I have modified the virtual machine's .vmx file and changed the vmxnet3 device and it works.
Ethernet1. ConnectionType = "custom".
Ethernet1.virtualDev = "e1000".
Ethernet1.wakeOnPcktRcv = "FALSE".
Ethernet1. AddressType = 'generated '.
ethernet2. Present = 'TRUE '.
ethernet2.VNET = "VMnet1.
ethernet2. ConnectionType = "custom".
ethernet2.virtualDev = "vmxnet3" - change to vmxnet3
Adapter type VMxnet3 only is not supported for VMware workstation and also one of my hosts broke down several times with the low error message in the log file.

Can someone guide me how to set up a lab NSX on VMware workstation and use 1600 MTU for VXlan traffic. Any help is very appreciated.
Hi all
I managed to solve this problem by separating the storage traffic to a different vswitch and the traffic to a different VDS NSX.

Question for staff: VMWare Workstation 7: end of life?
Can any of the VMWare team please clarify the situation concerning VMWare Workstation 7. My security software said 7 Workstation is end of life, and it won't pass me with rating of 100% because of this. Is there still some security fixes and stability issued for VMWare Workstation 7? What is the date of end for security patches support?
I do not see where it is noted the end of Support (EOS) for VMWare Workstation 7.
It does not separately, because it is not already EOS.
from the link:
VMware will support the previous major version and its minor versions for 18 months

Hi, I faced the same problem, and now I have corrected this issue.
He was vmnet.ko, at least for me.
Here's how to solve,
You can find the latest vmnet.ko of /lib/modules/~previous_kernel_version~/misc/vmnet.ko
Copy vmnet.ko into your current/lib/modules/your_current_version/misc folder.
And then run vmware, if you fail at the first, please run again.
If so, you can run vmwre!
I hope this will help you.
Good day.

Hello VMWare community!
So I tried for the past few days to install VMWare on my workstation. I tried both VMWare Workstation 9 and 10, but that didn't work either. The problem is just after installation, when are compilation of kernel modules.
Here is the log:

So, did you ever find this problem?
Thank you

- Fedora is not a host for VMware Workstation/Player-supported operating system. Note that although not officially supported as a host nevertheless operating system I run it under Fedora 20, but with the stock kernel.
- I do not think that the 3.13.4 kernel is still supported, even on a supported host OSes.
- Take a look at: VMware modules & core 3.13

Another VMWare Workstation Fedora 19 x 64 wire
I tried for 2 weeks almost to install vmware player or vmware workstation 10.1 6 on fedora 19 x 64
The process I followed was simply by downloading the file from the vmware website, run it, then run the application.
It starts fine with no errors, but when I try to start a virtual machine the following error message indicates:
Unable to open/dev/vmmon: no such file or directory. Please ensure that the "vmmon" kernel module is loaded.
and then displays this error:
Could not initialize the surveillance apparatus.
and this:
Cannot change the power state of VM: internal error
So after searching around, I tried to build modules with
VMware-modconfig - console - install-all
But it fails with the following error message.
.......

make [1]: 'postgeneration' is up-to-date.

Hello
Have work and Workstation 7.1.5 - 491717 fine. I then uninstall and install 8.0.0 - 471780 or 8.0.2 - 591240
And now, when you try to run VMWare Workstation I get
Fatal error of VMware Workstation (vmui)
Exception 0xc0000005 (access violation) occurred.I'm on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. If I uninstall 8 and return to 7, it is fine. Workstation 8 works well on my laptop though.
It is the newspaper that VMware leaves when it crashes.

Once launched, it genearted a new file called "inventory.vmls", I then landed my file in the folder, just in case I need to return to Workstation7.
I guess you might be able to accomplish the same thing by removing all your Favorites, but I don't know.
Hope this helps someone with this problem.

How to solve the problem of VMWare Workstation 8 - unable to open/dev/vmmon
Initially, I had this problem in March 2011 after installing VMWare Workstation 7 on a lab machine 5.7 RHEL and attempt to boot an image I know was good and should work. . Someone else fixed the problem for me - I think they had to install a new/different libraries (vmmon.o and vmnet.o for vmware). However, I find no information detailing what has been done to solve the problem.
I see the same error on the same machine after upgrading to VMWare Workstation 7.0 for VMWare Workstation 8.0.
1 here are the mistakes I see:
a. "Could not open/dev/vmmon.
b. "failed to initialize the surveillance apparatus.
c. "cannot change the power state of VM: cannot find a valid peers to connect to.Also, when I run the stop etc/init.d/vmware, then run /etc/init.d/vmware start, I see that the State of "Virtual Machine Monitor" is DOWN.
2 here is the information on VMWare Workstation:VMWare Workstation 8.0.1 build 528992
3 here is the RHEL uname - information for the host:
2.6.18 - 274.7.1.el5xen Linux #1 SMP xxx.xxx.xxx kills Oct 17 12:06:22 EDT 2011 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Release of RedHat Enterprise Linux Server 5.7 (Tikanga)The problem could be that the version of vmmon.o and vmnet.o that comes by default with vmware does not work with linux kernel version I have on my system. I think I need to build a new vmmon.o and vmnet.o on my particular 5.7 RHEL.
I found that to build a new version of vmmon.o you Executive vmware - config.pl. I have not just on my machine, and I was not able to find on the internet.
Here is the version of vmmon.o (for RHEL 5) that I have installed on my machine:
/usr/lib/VMware/modules/binary/BLD-2.6.18-8.EL5-x86_64smp-RHEL5/objects/vmmon.oHere is the version of rhel5 I use:
2.6.18 - 274.12.1.el5xen
It is possible that the vmmon.o using bld - 2.6.18 - 8.el5 - x86_64smp-RHEL5 is not compatible with the kernel 2.6.18 - I 274.12.1.el5xen.Please help me find vmware - config.pl so I can build my own vmmon.o and vmnet.o

VMware workstation 8 and visualization
Hi all
I just downloaded the trail for vmware workstation 8 and wanted to try the option of viewing with one of my virtual machines created. I read that now, this option is only for modern processor. my processor is an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 which has the set of instructions VT - x visualisation. When I enable the option for my virtual machine I get the following error message "Virtualized Intel VT-x/EPT requires the support of Intel VT-x/EPT platform" I have this option enabled in my BIOS and have one of the most up-to-date versions of the BIOS for my motherboard.
It of just my CPU not supported by vmware or is there some kind in order to get this to work with my setup?
Thank you
My computer specs:
Windows 7 pro SP1
Intel Core 2 Quad [email protected]
4 GB of ram
1 TB HARD DRIVE
GeForce 8800 GTX 512 MB
The Core 2 processors have no support of EFA. It takes EPT to virtualize VT - x.

6u2 ESXi host nested on VMware Workstation for Linux referee v12
Hello all, I have
I have a lab environment virtual running in VMware Workstation for Linux v12, and my ESXi hosts do not work correctly on one of the virtual networks. All my troubleshooting suggests a problem with nested ESXi hosts that may be a bug, but I want to assure you that I did everything properly first. That's why I post here with the hope that if I made a mistake that maybe someone else can point out he me.
Physical system
8 core Intel Xeon 2.1 GHz CPU
128 GB of RAM
OS - kernel Linux 64 - bit w/3.19.0-32-generic Linux Mint 17.3 (fully updated from this announcement)
VMware Workstation 12 Pro - 12.1.1. Build-3770994 (fully updated from this announcement)
Nested ESXi host VM
ESXi v6.0.0 (Build 3825889, completely updated from this announcement)
4 cards 'physical' (only 3 used for now)
-all use the e1000 NIC hardware virtual, but also tried vmxnet3 NIC with no difference
-vSwitch0 use vmnic0 & 1 vmnet16 of virtual network in a pair of active / standby
-vSwitch1 uses vmnic2 on network virtual vmnet18
-vmk0 used for management on vSwitch0 and vmk1 for iSCSI on vSwitch1
-"Promiscuous" mode and forged passes enabled on all Port vSwitch groups (activating or turning off these features makes no difference)
Test performed until now
I checked that all the IP addresses and network masks used are correct.
With the help of vmkping I ping other nodes on the network vmnet16 with success.
With the help of vmkping I tried to ping the other nodes in the network vmnet18, but that has failed.
I have depolyed other non - ESXi VMs on the vmnet18 network, and they are able to ping each other, but are unable to ping or ping by the ESXI host.
I tried various material virtual NIC as mentioned before, but without changes in the results.
I tried to use only local network instead of the vmnet18 guest network segments with no change in results.
When I find out the status of the network adapters on the ESXi host through vCenter or host incorporated client vmnic0 & 1 time display network information, but vmnic2 shows no networks. Yet, I know that there is a network with different VM communicate on it. Moreover, I was able to get all of this work on a Windows system running 10 Workstation (this is the laptop that my employer gives me with).
Having built nested ESXi labs on different platforms as well as physical environments in the past, I'm very confused as to why I can't get this special configuration to work. At this point my gut tells me that this is probably a bug any with the nested themselves ESXi hosts. Since I can get all this work on vmnet16 including the management of ESXi hosts and the VCSA that I use, I am sure that my vSwitch configuration is correct (other than the IP address space and vmnic configurations is bascially the same). Because I can get other virtual machines to communicate over the network vmnet18 I don't see how can be a VMware Workstation for the issue physical Linux host. Is there something obvious I'm missing here? I read on the ESXi hosts nested under VMware Workstation after having known problems and bugs with networking. If anyone else has experienced this?
Thanks for any help others can provide!
Kind regards
Patrick
Well, the problem is now resolved. The problem was what covelli was trying to explain, but I couldn't because the physical host network adapters being mentioned.
The problem on the Linux host, but it was a problem of permissions with the virtual Ethernet adapters. The following article has the fix:
With the help of Ethernet virtual cards in Promiscuous Mode on a Linux host (287) | VMware KBEven if I launched the workstation under the root user I have yet met this problem and which still makes no sense to me, but change the permissions solve the problem. I was not getting an error message on my Linux Mint and Ubuntu system, but when I tried on a second box of Linux Mint that I just got the error has been generated, and the error message was the above link it contains.
So, here's what I learned:
(1) the question has nothing to with a VMware Workstation definition that you can configure.
(2) the question has nothing to do with a physical network card.
(3) the question has nothing to do with any vmnic on the nested ESXi host.(4) apparently virtual Ethernet adapters are not the correct permissions when created.
All you have to do to fix this is:
(1) open a terminal.
(2) run the command ' sudo chmod a + rw/dev/vmnet * "(don't forget to run this each time that you create a new virtual network).
You can also create a group, as shown in the link above and simply give this group the correct permissions. Personally, I think it's easier to just give everyone the rw permission.
I appreciate the help that others have offered. I did not understand what was asked for in previous answers because of the terms that have been used.

What permissions are required for access to VMware Workstation?
I need to provide access to a few virtual machines in our environment vSphere for a user through VMware Workstation 9.0.2 but questions.
There are 3 virtual machines in a folder under models and virtual computers that this user needs access base (start, stop, console). I first tried assigning the role of user (sample) of the virtual machine to the user on the folder that contains these VMs (with spread), but trying to access one of them workstation as long as this user, I get the error was refused permission to perform this operation. I even tried to assign the role of administrator for this user on this issue and received the same error.
Then, I assigned the user (sample) of the virtual machine and then later the role of the administrator directly to the virtual machines, but when you try to connect through my computer I get this error with or the other role (I have attached the log file, it refers):
After clicking on OK, workstation breaks down, and then I get this error:
The only way I could successfully get this user access is by adding the user to the local Administrators group vCenter Server, but after doing this, the user has full access to all virtual machines. I should also mention that Im able to access the virtual machine with the basic functions assigned via vSphere client to web without problem with permissions above affected as this user.
Does anyone know what is required to provide access by workstation I'm looking for?
Thank you!
Figured it out!
First, for each virtual machine that you want to grant access, to add the user/group with the assigned role, you want to give them. An additional step required for access to the workstation is, for each host you granted access to the virtual machines are on, you must also add the user/group and assign the read-only role, making sure to uncheck propagate to child objects.
So it's similar to the thread above, but avoids having to explicitly revoke access to each another VM on the host. So now, when I log in as a user with that I was testing, I can connect to vCenter via my computer, only to see the VMs Ive applied custom roles to and, especially, can connect to them without problem!
Also, it seems that even if work stations invite you to assign read-only permissions to the host is not actually do something.
Thanks a bunch for all the help everyone... especially ShadyMalatawey. If I would not have seen this prompt in my computer to apply the permission he would have had much more time to understand.
