AX4 - 5, Dell M600, Brocade 4424 blades

I'm looking for information about the AX4 - 5SC when she uses with blades M600 running Server 2003.

Blades built into each blade has a single HBA with dual-port Emulex HBA -, IE. two of WWN.

When I use the Navisphere Server utility to 'register the server with the connected storage system' I can't get a WWN of to sign up. Is this a normal behavior?

When I check the Brocade 4424 switch I don't see one of the WWN for the server and when I check Navisphere express only one of THEM is visible to this server.

I would however that the two would be would record so that Powerpath can react if one of the HBA ports have a problem? (PS. My setup is not HA as I only have a single SP and a Brocade 4424)

Can someone give me information about this configuration it will affect my zoning?

Thanks in advance.

Let me answer my own post in over a year. :))) While I have potentially met the same 3 new switches - we had to use anything else than the last time. Since then we successfully anchored a M5424 - so I dug a bit, maybe 40 mintues deep. And am out laughing hard now. I read 3-4 reset all long procedures, 'fun' to research involving the modification of procedures - initialize variables, etc. Then I put 2 and 2 together and here's 4 - I took the tips of some of them and wrote a very simple procedure to reset the switches - it works on the M4424 and I think it would be good for the M5424 and many other brocade switches.

-You don't need the eProm password to work, all affect this password if it is enabled even more turns. You can disable it by opening the switch and pressing the two buttons in the corner individually.

    M4424 reset without root access:

Connect to the console - reboot the switch

Press ESC when you are prompted to enter the boot menu

Select option 3. The password is usually set to the password

  • ESXi 5.5 Dell M620 M8428-K

    Hi all

I have a problem with ESXi 5.5 - when I join all my network cards to a switch I lose connection.

    Here is my configuration:

Reference Dell M620 blades in a M1000e chassis. We have 10 adapters GB Qlogic NAC - dual channel QMD8262-K, which are divided into 4 adapters on each channel, linking to 2 x switches chassis K-M8428-Dell (rebadged brocade 8000).

When you use ESXi 5.1 everything works perfectly.

I got a box to open with VMware since November and so far they were able to identify that the ARP requests are extinguished vmnic0 but ARP reply packets come back through vmnic2 and lost by Team_ReverseFilterPerList(). That's why vmk0 stops sending traffic.

I was wondering if someone has a similar setup and work with ESXi 5.5? We have 7 of these boxes and none work with ESXi 5.5.

    Thank you

    Geoff.

Here is the command that worked for me. You must restart after his entered before it takes effect.

I expect this version will include Dell OpenManage 6.1 as well as Dell custom drivers. After installation, I am unable to connect to https://esxi_server:1311 (i.e. port OpenManage).

    Issues related to the:

    1. Nobody knows exactly what is in this custom version? Is it drivers and OpenManage?

    2. Assuming that OM is part of the customization, what should I do to make it work?

    3. When I finally get my license for vSphere Essentials (maybe more), it'll work with this ESXi installation (just change the license number to authorize a vSphere Essentials managed node? or is it a completely separate ESXi install media for this product)?

    See further discussions on http://communities.vmware.com/thread/220783?tstart=0

It contains all the necessary information to configure OpenManage 6.1 on ESXi 4.0.

Earlier with ESXi 3.5, OpenManage component has been incorporated into the ISO image

but leaving ESXi 4.0, VMware has introduced a new concept called Vsphere Bundle (VIB) Installation and allows end users download files VIB and install it on ESXi 4.0. If Dell has begun to post their OpenManage as a VIB component in support.dell.com.

  • Cannot Storage Vmotion between EMC Celerra NFS and NFS VNX

Recently we have improved our infrastructure VMware 3.5 to 5.0. Managed to migrate all virtual machines to the Esxi5.0 without any problems. All the warehouses of new data related to blades and all storage pools, old and new can be found under vCenter.

Problem we have is that we can not Storage vMotion virtual machines of the old Celerra NFS for new NFS VNX stores. It comes back with the error "cannot access file VM VNX {datastore} filename '. Thanks for your contributions, but I solved it. A bit of a 'schoolboy error', but although I had added to the VMKernel IP in the host root and read-write in the NFS export properties, I also need to add the IP address of the hosts/blades. Storage vMotion successfully in new stores VNX. THX Kem

  • vCPU to Jepp (Physics)

Man, my head is about to explode with all the information I read on vCPU to physical CPU!

I would like to just that sink, I work in an environment that has 20 hosts distributed on more than 2 data centers. 12 host to A and 8 b. well, we were under the impression that adding more hosts and our VM stretching help to alleviate problems of slow. We had 6 and 4 B keep in mind that I said helps, does not cure all for all! Well, after what I read with the virtual machine resources and best practices, I am just more confused. I have need a more direct answer or something that can point me in the right direction.

Memory is not a questions on my hosts, I push anywhere from 32 GB to 48GBish on the hosts themselves, not great but good enough. Now my vCPUs on my virtual machines are the questions that I feel has plagued some of the slowness. For example, on my new hosts they are:

    Reference Dell m600

    42 GB memory

    8CPUs x 2826 GHz

    2 processor Sockets

    4 cores per Socket

8 (-16 seek logical depending on whether we have Hyperthreading running on the host or not with this host having only 8)

This area of host being an example, I have only three virtual machines on it. All three are Server2003, 2 of them are Terminal Server servers and one is a file/program server (a single program is drawn to users on terminal server).

Each of the three servers have 4 vCPU and 4 GB of memory.

My understanding is that the memory that we are strong. 4 x 3 = 12 right? Yes 12 GB memory and we have 42GBish on this server, we are good right?

vCPU is 4 x 3 = 12 no? Is that 12 physical processor sockets, 12 cores, or 12 logical processors, I have to have? Which, as you can see this host is not 12 cpu anything if I understand that correctly?

I read here that you must not exceed vcpu more that your host has himself? So my final question is, looking at the above, plug vCPUs how can my host theoretically flat? (I know it depends, but for fun, we're going to put a number on it). Thank you in advance!

    Need help,

    -Oscar

This is how your host example looks like:

    • Reference Dell M600 blades with Intel E54xx processors!
    • Two processors quad-core, HyperThreading disabled!
    • What type of storage (FC, iSCSI, local)?
    • In the case of local storage: SAS or SATA drives? Controller RAID with BBU (enabled write cache)?
    • Windows Server 2003, Standard edition.

    A few thoughts on this:

    • After my experience XenApp rather is out of memory that CPU (unless you really use the applications resources CPU).
    • Enabling HyperThreading may help a little for the processor you are using. For the 55xx or newer models of CPU, enabling HyperThreading will make a significant difference.
    • If you use local storage, BBU makes a HUGE difference in the performance of the disks (factor of 10 x or better).
    • A default installation of Windows 2003 does not align partitions (31.5 KB) to the VMFS and physical storage. It is perhaps not a real problem in the case of a storage system, but for local storage of well aligned partitions can make a difference of 10-15% in the performance of the disk. If there is a chance, align the partitions to 1 MB, which is the default for Windows Vista/2008 and more recent value.

My conclusion for the host of the example above:

    • The most important - point and that's where I absolutely agree with Tom - is to reduce the number of vCPU to the file server (I assume that this will make no difference to the file server) as well as for XenApp servers to two. This will leave two vCPUs for the host and should reduce the values of "CPU Ready" that can cause slow.
    • In the case of local storage consider adding BBU, unless you already have it.
    • If the above doesn't help, consider align partitions to 1 MB, and - in the case where it is the memory of comments, which is limited - consider switching to the Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition in order to allow more memory comments (up to 12-14 GB usually works well with XenApp on Windows 2003).
Note: A Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition license (must be at least a R2 license) allows you to install up to 4 instances of Windows Server on a single host.

  • Support HBA (vSphere 5) and display of the adapters for storage in vSphere client

    Hi again,

Some hosts that I am looking to upgrade from ESX 4.0 update 4 to ESXi 5 bear the name of FC HBA following listed under storage adapters, and I would like to see if they are compatible with ESXi 5.

Focus on the ISP2432 4 Gb Fibre Channel to PCI Express HBA

The actual servers themselves are servers Dell M600 blades. I would say that it's just what is listed in the section of storage cards (my guess is the name of the driver). The configurations of real system for M600 blades as they were purchased from Dell are listed as having HBA QLOGIC QME2472 FC4 HBA's PORT DOUBLE PC CARD adapters in them. These are listed as supported on ESXi 5. So I guess my question is more around - what is reported in the list of storage adapters more indication of the driver name for the HBA rather than the real exact device/model of the HBA? How can I make 100% sure that this is the exact material HBA model in my hosts? i.e. the QME2472? I can use Dell OpenManage but that lists what ESX reports cards like - which is the ISP2432 base of HBA. Is there something more low level, that I can use to see the material in ESX?

    See you soon,.

    Sean

Yes, the HBA is supported on ESXi5.  You can always check the HCL for clarification

  • Applying strategies to BEAR in ESX to its physical equipment.

Ken Cline and Ed Haletky (among others) put on some great standard practical information for natachasery and vswitches in an ESX environment.  I have read and reread to try to put up my new ESX environment and still seems to me lacking something.  Especially when it comes to applying the physical network interface cards to its equipment, and whether they should be on VLANS separated, separate switches all together and how.  Here is the configuration of what I have.

    * Qty 3 stacked GigE switches dedicated for my LAN network. (24 192.168.0.0)

    • Qty 2, trunked GigE switches dedicated for my SAN (10.10.0.0/24)

    • Qty 1, unit of Dell/Equallogic ISCSI SAN PS5500 connected to the dedicated SAN switches.

    • Qty 1, Dell M1000e blade enclosure, with thoughts pass Ethernet on all 3 fabrics; A, B and C.

    • Qty 4, Dell M600 blades in box with 6 NIC per blade

      • Each blade has 6 network cards.  The article of the Ed, they should include the following:

        • 1 NETWORK card by blade for the service console (vswitch0)

        • 1 NETWORK card by blade for vmotion (vswitch0)

        • 2 NICs by blade dedicated to my SAN. (vswitch1) connected to my SAN (fabric)

        • 2 network cards by blade dedicated to my machine network virtual (vswitch2) connected to my local network

    • Qty 1, box of ESXi, who run a virtual stored on the SAN network computer to run Vcenter.  Virtualized, but is not part of my blade cluster.

My uncertainty is when to know how work isolated networks.

    1. If I have my LAN on a 192.168.0.0 network 24, should I isolate ports that the console service and vmotion in a VLAN on my LAN devices and assign a network block of say 172.16.32.0 24 and make this routable to the primary LAN? (for example, 192.168.0.0/24)

    2. the NETWORK adapter dedicated for vmotion (but on vswitch0,) identical to the service console is going to be on one VLAN separate himself, or he will live in the same block of theoretical to say 172.16.32.0/24 network?

    3. If you have difficulties establishing a vlan for these purposes of mgmt, can we have thise natachasery go to a separate switch that is located on a different footing (very well protected) of its firewall?

I know once I put the missing pieces of the puzzle together, I really get it.  But now, I'm not there yet.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

  • Storage VMotion - a general error occurred: could not wait for the data.  Error bad0007.

    People,

I searched through this forum and have not found an answer that works in many positions out there, I say to myself that I would ask him once again.

    Here's the context:

We have 12 identical Dell M600 blades in 2 chassis with 16 GB of Ram, 2 x Xeon E5430, they are all connected to an Equallogic PS 5000XV iSCSI SAN on a separate iSCSI (vswitch1) with 2 cards network dedicated network and dedicated switch, console svc iscsi dedicated, dedicated VMkernel port for iscsi access. Net access (vswitch0) contains port groups VM for our various networks and a console port and vmkernel svc for VMotion with 2 separate NETWORK cards as well.

    We are running ESX 3.5 U3 and VCenter 2.5 U3 on Win2k3 R2

VMotion works between all servers, Storage Vmotion works for most machines, HA works and the value 2 host failurs with no monitoring of vm, DRS is set to manual for now I have a few machines on the local stores that I complete my rebuilt LUN, there is no set of rules for DRS and VMware EVC is enabled for guests of the Intel. However, I'll just describe one machine to do svmotion below.

    Here's the problem:

I'm trying to Svmotion via svmotion.pl - interactive, a Machine to Windows 2000 with a virtual disk and a virtual RDM. I am aware of the requirements for the RDM and required parameters for svmotion, independent is not selected for the RDM, and I also have svmotioned several machines linux and win2k3 with the same configuration without problem. In the interactive session, I choose to individually place the disks and I chose the virtual disk to only the virtual machine to be moved, essentially, as I saw it move vdisk virtual machine and then copy to the pointer of the RDM.

The use of the processor in this machine is about 25% average. but I try to run migrations at the time the lowest. and The Host it itself shows only about 5.5 GB of the 16 GB of RAM used. so I think we're good on the RAM. the volume/datastore that I'm migrating from has 485 GB free and the volume/datastore I migration towards a 145 GB free. the VM virtual disk is only about 33 GB.

I run the script the windows version of the RCLI svmotion. and when to begin the process, I get the following error at around 2 percent of the progress:

"Since the server has encountered an error: a general error occurred: could not wait for the data."  Error bad0007. Invalid parameter. »

After searching around, I found the following hotfixes to the U2 release notes

    • Migrate.PageInTimeoutResetOnProgress: Set the value to 1.

    • Migrate.PageInProgress: The value 30, if you get an error even after the setting of the Migrate.PageInTimeoutResetOnProgress variable.

I've made these changes, and I still get the same error.

When I dig in the newspaper, I see these entries in the journal of vmkwarning:

    RDG,

Certainly an unusual problem.  A few questions to better understand the issue.

1st. A it worked correctly at any time, or is - this first enter this part of the functionality of the iDRAC?

2 have you tried different media in order to ensure that the issue is not isolated just for this disc?

What is particularly unusual as connected virtual media lists, it's clearly is not resolve as expected.

  • Cloning a virtual machine that contains a system of operating under existing Windows license

I have a Dell VRTX with three blades and five VM.  All five VM have Windows Server 2012 R2 64-bit as the operating system.

In the near future, I will create at least two new virtual machines that are also having Windows Server 2012 R2 64-bit as the operating system.  To make things easy for me, I would like to just clone among the five existing VM to make the new virtual machine.  This should be easier to make a virtual machine from scratch.

However, I'm concerned by the existing Windows license manager.  Ideally, I would like to clone an existing virtual machine, remove (format?) the Windows Server 2012 R2 64 bit installation of VM newly created and then perform a new installation of Windows Server 2012 R2 64-bit, install VMware Tools, etc. in the new virtual machine.

    1. what happens in the short time that in double Windows licenses are active?  I fear that the window one or two facilities will become disabled, as well.

    2. is there a better/more way to reach my goal of creating the new virtual machine?

    3. are there additional tips, comments or questions?

    Thanks in advance.

Members of your VM of a domain? If you blow the OS disk, then just make sure that the first time it starts (if you need to start), you disable the network adapters for. Personally, I would create from scratch, especially if they are members of the domain.

  • Fail-Over with limited resources

I'm new to VMware.  I support a VRTX of Dell server at (3 blades) recently ordered.  Please answer the following questions:

1 how Fail-Over does not work if you have limited resources?  When I install server Dell VRTX, I very careful with the allocation of RAM for some of the virtual machine.  It is mainly a VM that I am concerned about (64 GB of RAM).  I have a lot of storage for both the present and future of the virtual computer, so I'm talking about size/allocation of storage during the debate.  My current setup is:

    Slide 1:

    VM 1 # 8 processor cores, 64 GB RAM

VM 2 # 4 CPU cores, 16 GB of RAM

    Blade 2:

VM 3 # 4 cores of the processor, 32 GB RAM

VM #4 4 CPU cores, 16 GB of RAM

    Blade 3:

VM 5 # 8 processor cores, 32 GB of RAM

Each blade: 2 (20 logic Cores/CPU) CPU, 128 GB of RAM

Later this year I intend to add at least two 2 more VM (RAM allocation may be somewhat higher than those listed.).

VM #6 4 CPU cores, 16 GB of RAM

    2. I'm afraid that if 1 blade fails, and later, I much more Total virtual computer, what happens if the allocation of virtual machine disk RAM failing is greater than what is available on the blades for which virtual machine failover?

I intend to recommend increasing the amount of RAM to 192 GB (minimum) by blade, just to be sure.  However, there is a chance that the increase of RAM cannot be approved.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

If the amount of vRAM exceeds the available landau your VMs will have a bad time. Transparent page sharing, compression will help but eventually your virtual machines will begin to Exchange and it will be very sensitive.

  • slow startup of the host VMWare ESXi 5.5 when installed on the hard drive internal

We have some servers Dell R720 with 256G RAM and 2 6core Procs.  When I install ESXi client for internal hard drives (mirrored array) it takes literally more than 5 minutes to start.  I can watch the vmware boot process crawl slowly the progress bar on the screen in "recovery" mode before moving on to the substantive start-up procedure yellow.

Why is this slow process?  Why a hard drive inside is install using syslinux? (it's the first thing that shows on the display).  If I had to guess, I would say that the only facility to support runs of fat32 on a USB flash drive and the same hard drive installs use this same process to start.  Am I wrong?

I'm late to the party, but we have been affected by this issue. The solution is a updated internally perc firmware.

    It's like night and day.
