  I have a WD My Book Essential 320 GB external drive. The Windows backup program does not recognize the drive... The drive IS recognized on my computer and I can access and transfer and copy and paste to it without problem. It's just the backup program which does not. No error message or anything. Only, it does not recognize the drive when I get to the destination area. I tried to update the drivers. The WD support site has Backup downloads for OTHER external drives, but not this one.   Here's what you can do.

  Perform the clean boot

  Backup process a lot sometimes, this problem is provided by third party in conflict with windows software. See if this is the case here by putting your boot system before you perform the backup.

  How can I identify the name of the invisible file for a backup file successfully to an external hard drive USB2 separate?  I use Windows Vista backup program (Service Pack 2), and I need to do backups plus two from other computers on the same external hard drive.  To do this, I think I would need to identify each backup file separate I know which file to specify if I need to do a restore.

  How can I accomplish this? The program does not seem to give me the ability to specify a file to which to write the backup during a given session files.  In addition, I do not understand why I can not see the file name in Windows Explorer - my files options are defined to be able to view hidden and system.  Would be grateful for any help you can provide, tonight if possible.   Best regards, Oliver for Norm

  I have a brand new model Pavilion Sleekbook 14-b013cl running under 64-bit Windows 8. Two questions:

  (1) Win7 was a program of restoration that could create a disk image with full backup, but Win8 seems to have just a file by file backup system that excludes the files of the OS. A more capable backup program comes on this computer?

  (2) I have configured the computer to not require a password at startup, but it is still asking one. When I start I see a screen with the date and time - I have to click on it and then the machine asks me a password. How can I go directly to the home screen when I start?

  I am running Windows XP Home edition. I downloaded my Windows CD backup. I backed up my files to an external drive. It took 40 minutes, so I'm pretty sure they did backup. I can't access the files as it says they are .bkf files and have no association on my computer. What did I miss, or what more I have to do.

  The BKF file type is primarily associated with 'Windows XP' by Microsoft Corporation.
  For XP Home this utility is not installed by default. You must install it from the directory of the added value of your disc XP Home distribution. Once installed shows upward in the start menu.   I had these problems and many others using DVDs to make the backup of files.

  Please save you time sitting in front of the computer, the power to the machine with the DVD and the aggravation of not working do not after all.
  Invest in an external hard drive for backup of files. It is the most effective way.
  These days, a 1 TB external hard drive can be had for less than $100. It's money well spent.

  Have you tried another USB port (your post is unclear)?

  The external hard drive has its own power supply or just connect with a USB cable?  If there is no separate power supply, disconnect all other USB devices (except keyboard and mouse) and see if that helps.

  Don't show external drive in disk management (start > run > diskmgmt.msc > OK)?  If so, a drive letter is assigned? If so, what is reported to the layout, Type, file system and status?

  Only the external drive shows in Device Manager (start > run > devmgmt.msc > OK) to the title of "hard disks"?  If Yes, what is displayed when you double-click on and look at 'Device status' and 'Use of the device' in the general tab?
